[Bug 1533702] [NEW] Only 2 monitors detected via laptop docking station

2016-01-13 Thread JGJones
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04
Linked to this bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1382462

Laptop is a Dell Precision M4800.

Dell docking station is used, and this docking station comes with 2 x
DVI, 2 x DisplayPort and 1 x VGA ports.

I have 2 x 1980x1080 monitors - one is using DVI and the other on
DisplayPort and both are detected fine.

I also have a "spare" 20" monitor that is 1680x900 and only take VGA and
this is plugged in.

The laptop is configured to disable the use of Intel GPU and to use
Nvidia GPU at all times.

With nvidia-settings installed:

On the login screen - all 4 displays are on (including laptop) although
going to the VGA/laptop screen cause the screen to "scroll" with the
cursor.

After login - after much work which resulted in just the two HD monitors
showing output and is configured via nvidia-settings. It only detects
two displays.

BUT going to the Display Settings - it shows all 4 screens and any
attempts in using this can break things, Display Settings also freeze on
every action for a short period of time.

On a whim I decided to uninstall nvidia-settings to see how it might
affect things.

Display Settings now works without issues and it show only two detected
screens - it does not detect the laptop screen or the VGA screen.

What I expected:

All 4 displays to be working but at a minimum all 3 external displays to
be working, the laptop screen would be a bonus

[Bug 1382462] Re: 10de:0dfa Desktop/windows painted incorrectly in dual monitor configuration

2016-01-12 Thread JGJones
I have this problem with two HD monitors plugged into the DVI ports on
the docking port.

I have a 3rd monitor in the VGA port and on login screen - all 4
displays are showing (including laptop) although moving mouse around
does cause some issues.

After logging in - I have two monitors (both HD, in DVI ports), and
laptop/VGA is off.

I fixed my issues simply by removing nvidia-settings (sudo apt-get
--purge remove nvidia-settings) and doing the rest in Display Settings.

When I had nvidia-settings installed, I often had issues:

1. nvidia-settings will only show two detected monitors (in DVI ports)
2. Display Settings will show 4 displayers (VGA and laptop included) however
attempting to change any settings in this cause a lot of problems (ie - it'll
freeze for a period of time, mess up the displays etc. After much pain I
managed to disable laptop and VGA via this and it worked then)

However after I removed nvidia-settings:

Display Settings work just fine and show two monitors only (both DVI)
and work perfectly.

So it appears that nvidia-settings is somehow conflicting with Display
Settings in this particular case. My solution was simply to just
uninstall nvidia-settings and it works.

I hope this works for others - if you could confirm the same thing?

Thanks!

Sorry, commented in the wrong area :S - I get a freeze exactly as
described here but it happens whenever I use VLC - but I'm not using
Intel GPU but nvidia so it doesn't fit in here. Please ignore.

[Bug 545207] Re: Not syncing files correctly

2010-03-31 Thread JGJones
I have a small number of files in the Ubuntu One folder that have the
sync'ed tick on them, but they do not show up on the Ubuntu One cloud
server and thus not on all my computers. This is the result on multiple
laptops, all have different Ubuntu one content where a number of files
are stated as ticked but are not in Ubuntu One cloud and thus are not
replicated.

I'm not sure what else to collect for logging, pleae let me know and I
can do this.

At the moment, as a work around, I'm using Dropbox which just works
which is a pity as I see great promise for Ubuntu One, but would just
like it to just works :)

Cheers

[Bug 447086] [NEW] Feature request - ability to resize images in eog

This is just a feature request - I would like the ability where I double

by default - I then only have the option to rotate the image but nothing
more.

So to resize the image while using the default software with a stock
installation of Ubuntu I am then forced to open up GIMP which is a bit
of overkill and not keeping it nice and simple for oridnary users who
would like an easy option to resize an image before emailing to someone

telling me that my HDD was full (over 300GB!) and found the repeated
lines in both user.log and syslog:

Oct 3 00:06:18 Venus HP-PSC-2500: prnt/hpijs/services.cpp 386: unable to write
to output, fd=1, count=4096: Broken pipe

and so on.

This only happens if I'm printing something and I don't switch on the
printer (in my case I forgot about it until my disk got full).

[Bug 120434] Re: [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U87x Webcam userland tools

2009-01-06 Thread JGJones
Video showing strangely in Skype?

This is due to the codec running only in 640x480 - there's a bug with
the resizing of video size I believe but there is a workaround for
Skype.

Go to ~/.Skype and in your username folder - there is a file -
config.xml.

Make a backup copy of it.

Now edit the file and add this:

Video
CaptureHeight480/CaptureHeight
CaptureWidth640/CaptureWidth
/Video

Put it in between the Lib/Lib section (I put it at the bottom in my
case)

Start up Skype. This might fix it for you if your video is strange. As a
workaround, I'm happy enough with this until things improve.

Cheers

[Bug 120434] Re: [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U870 Webcam Driver

2008-11-20 Thread JGJones
Ubuntu 8.10 - sadly, the R5U870 will not work on this as stated on the
official site at http://wiki.mediati.org/R5u870 it does state in large
wording that r5u870 is currently broken on 2.6.26+ kernels!

However it does mention one could try the userspace driver instead which
you can find here:

http://www.bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/wiki/Home

I've used this and the good news is that it works on Ubuntu 8.10, but it
isn't quite 100% perfect - ie in Cheese, seeing a 640x480 video, it's
just fine. But using something else such as Skype or Flash (which use
320x240 video resolution) - yu get a cropped picture, that's not quite
right (I see a mirror effect - ie two of myself).

If however you are happy with being limited to just 640x480 video or
know of a way to fix for lower resolution...here's how to get it:

Packages - the site mention packages and Ubuntu is mentioned, but
there's no packages available so you'll have to install from source
however this is simple:

1. install what's needed:
 $ sudo apt-get install mercurial build-essential libusb-dev libglib2.0-dev

2. Fetch source:
 $ hg clone http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/

3. Change into r5u87x directory
 $ cd r5u87x

4. Compile
 $ make

5. It's very short and then you'll need to load driver so do this next
 $ sudo ./loader

If your camera is detected and supported you'll get something like this
next:

Searching for device...
Found camera : 05ca:183a
Firmware : ucode/r5u87x-05ca-183a.fw

Camera reports positive microcode state.
Camera reports microcode version 0x0111.
Not doing anything - camera already setup.

Successfully uploaded firmware to device 05ca:183a!

(in my case, it doesn't do anything as my camera is already setup, I've
already done the loader bit)

6. Next you'll need your system to be aware of this change so you need to
re-modprobe uvcvideo so do this:
 $ sudo modprobe -r uvcvideo
 $ sudo modprobe uvcvideo

Now fire up Cheese (if you don't have it - sudo apt-get install cheese)
and enjoy watching yourself.

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics

2008-11-19 Thread JGJones
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop with Nvidia 8 vga card:

There is no way to control backlight brightness on Sony Vaios with 8-series
adapters, e.g.
  nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS
nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

The registers have been found (kudos to mikes!) and incorporated into
nvclock, which you can check out by anonymous cvs and install:

  ]$ sudo apt-get install cvs
  ]$ cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock login
  ]$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock co -P nvclock
  ]$ cd nvclock
  ]$ ./autogen.sh
  ]$ ./configure
  ]$ make
  ]$ sudo make install

To test, make sure you are using nVidia's proprietary driver, then:
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 100
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 15
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S +10

So far mikes' registers have been found to work on:
- 8400M GS on VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B
+ 8400M GS on VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B, SZ71E
  8400M GT on VGN FZ38M, FZ31M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE,
FZ21E, FZ21M, FZ470E, FZ340E, FZ190N, FZ18M
  8600M GS on VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z
  8600M GT on VGN AR51SU, AR71S

Add your model to the list by clicking on the Update description /
tags link, NOT by asking in a bug comment for someone else to do it.

To get hotkeys to work, follow the instructions in this comment:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/75

Dual-adapter models (SZ6 among others) can get backlight control with
the Intel adapter using xbacklight, and can get hotkey functionality as
  per bug #173652.

[Bug 173652] Re: Unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

2008-11-04 Thread JGJones
Laptop - Sony VAIO VGN-SZ71E
Ubuntu - 8.10 updated up to 4th Nov 2008.

On Stamina mode, so using Intel graphics, which is Intel

I confirm that in order to get dimming working all I need to do is to
run this command:

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native

And I do not need xbacklight, nor need to restart acpi. Just run the
above command, the screen then blank out for half a second and back, and
then I am able to use the Fn-F5/F6 to increase/decrease brightness on my
Sony (finally...was going blind from the brightness, which is very
extreme on a week-old laptop)

I've not attempted nvidia on Speed yet so will read the other bug report
(it's not exactly needed...until I start putting on games that is :D)

[Bug 244828] Re: Dasher just doesn't work at all

2008-07-30 Thread JGJones
I've just installed dasher - apt-get install dasher

It is working perfectly fine for me, sorry to say. Like JM Williams - I
click the left mouse button to start the letters moving and click again
to stop it.

I hate to say that I'm not able to replicate your bug as it doesn't help
in your case. Is there anything else that you might be running on your
system that might affect Dasher? Compiz running? Have you tried it with
Compiz off/on?

[Bug 201392] [NEW] [hardy] Compiz Plugin Scale keybinding for mouse give inconsistent behaviour

2008-03-12 Thread JGJones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Version of Ubuntu: Hardy Heron

I installed the Compiz configuration settings manager so that I could
configure Compiz to my liking. I use the Scale plugin (which give the
same effect as Apple OSX's Expose) for selecting windows.

This works correctly on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbons)

After upgrading to Hardy Heron, I reconfigured my Compiz setting to
match my previous settings however for Scale plugin this is what I use:

No keyboard keybinding - it's a behaviour that use the mouse so it make
better sense to use the mouse to initate the plugin and this is the
setting I use:

Windows from same workspace - Top screen, button 1
Windows from all workspaces - Top right screen, button 3

Expected behaviour is:

Top Screen, click button 1 - Windows scale (like Expose) and I pick the window
to switch to with Button 1 again.
Top Right Screen, click button 3 - Windows from all workspaces scale and I pick
the window to switch to with button 1 again.

What happens instead is:

Top Screen, click button 1 - Windows scale. Let go of button 1 - things go back
to normal - I am unable to use Scale
Top Right Screen, click button 3 - Windows scale from all workspaces, Let go of
button 3 - it all goes back (as above)

This is the same for any combination of top/right/bottom/others screen
and mouse buttons

Compiz bug listing show this as bug #11331 - Inconsistent behaviour with
Initiate Scale keybindings -
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11331 with patches
available.

** Affects: compiz-fusion-plugins-main (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 131133] Dell Vostro 1500

2007-09-23 Thread JGJones
Confirmed not working for Dell Vostro 1500 - Dell's are pretty popular
and I often get them for Ubuntu because it almost always works out of
the box for me and with Dell's pre-packaging Ubuntu's these days, IMHO
this bug should be a priority to be fixed before Gutsy is finally
released since it won't look good to have Dell's with no sound in
Ubuntu.
