[Bug 944548] Re: remmina does not change mouse cursor in rdp session

2013-01-15 Thread James Andrewartha
There's a PPA, https://code.launchpad.net/~freerdp-team/+archive/freerdp
Note that remmina.desktop has moved between packages, so you might get a
dpkg error on upgrade, just apt-get -f install to fix. Still has bug
#1004197 (Opening new server opens to black the first time) though.

[Bug 587856] Re: GNOME Drag Drop broken for remote X sessions

2012-03-05 Thread James Andrewartha
An [Impact] section explaining the severity and frequency of the bug on
users and justification for backporting the fix to the stable release:

Prevents drag and drop from working when using remote desktop protocols
like VNC and RDP.

A [Development Fix] section with an explanation of how the bug has been
addressed in the development branch, including the relevant version
numbers of packages modified in order to implement the fix.

Just the patch at
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-2-24id=2a9bf2619a742be3dbc41bab5854eb0d8b5689bb

A [Stable Fix] section pointing out a minimal patch applicable to the
stable version of the package. If preparing a patch is likely to be
time-consuming, it may be preferable to get a general approval from the
SRU team first.

The patch from
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-2-24id=2a9bf2619a742be3dbc41bab5854eb0d8b5689bb
applies cleanly and works. I just dropped in in debian/patches and
recompiled.

A [Test Case] section with detailed instructions how to reproduce the
bug. These should allow someone who is not familiar with the affected
package to reproduce the bug and verify that the updated package fixes
the problem.

Set up an X VNC server per http://linuxreviews.org/howtos/xvnc/ and
connect to it with your favorite VNC client. Try and drag and drop from
a GTK2 application.

A [Regression Potential] section with a discussion of likelihood and
potential severity of regressions and how users could get inadvertently
affected.

Low; patch directly targets the problem and is already backported in
later releases.

Do you need me to subscribe ubuntu-sponsors or ubuntu-sru?

[Bug 548866] Re: forgets middlemouse.contentLoadURL on upgrade or browser restart

2012-02-20 Thread James Andrewartha
Yes, if you read the full text of the changelog, it contains:
  * Prevent LP: #643899 - Firefox sending header Accept-Language:
chrome://global/locale/intl.properties because the intl.accept_languages
preference is messed up. Drop a patch which causes the preferences
system to save a user preference when changing a preference value to equal
the system default value (and revert to the original behaviour where the
preference is just discarded). This should hopefully stop Firefox Sync
from breaking localized preferences where they haven't been modified by
the user, but does regress LP: #548866

which has been parsed as closing #548866.

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-22 Thread James Andrewartha
So, for closed source programs which we don't even ship in Ubuntu, such
as Quake, we can't fix them, so it will be up to the closed source
program vendor to adapt. At least if you ask me.

How about we ask Linus, who is totally against breaking the Linux ABI,
as has been done here? You could fix them simply by reverting this
change until OSSp works.

2010-11-19 Thread James Andrewartha
David: If you read the bug log, you'll see that ALSA OSS emulation was
disabled because the plan was to have OSSp working for Maverick. This
didn't happen, but ALSA OSS emulation remains disabled. OSSp is probably
the correct solution for the future, but it's not here yet, so can we
just have ALSA OSS emulation turned back on for Maverick?

Applications that need this emulation: Games using the quake3 engine,
which are closed source and can't be changed.

A statement explaining the impact of the bug on users and justification for

[Bug 295741] Re: dbus-daemon memory leak

2009-07-28 Thread James Andrewartha
Khashayar: Run /etc/init.d/dbus stop, then
  valgrind --tool=massif /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system
like I did, it'll create a massif.out file, which you'll need to chown to
messagebus, then kill dbus-daemon and add it as an attachment. Since killing
dbus takes out any application on a bus, you'll need to do all of these
commands from a terminal, but in between you can log in via gdm/kdm as normal.

[Bug 17744] Re: libnss-ldap and libpam-ldap should use the same configuration file

2007-10-03 Thread James Andrewartha
Additionally, the docs haven't been updated or dependencies, so people
upgrading from previous versions will end up with a broken
configuration. You're still shipping libnss-ldap.conf, referring to
libnss-ldap.conf in the README.Debian etc.

This comes from a user in #ldap who was trying to work out why their new
7.10 install didn't work, as they'd just grabbed libnss-ldap and we were
assuming it still used /etc/libnss-ldap.conf.

libnss-ldap is in Universe, ie it's not part of the official Ubuntu

[Bug 83118] Re: Some components are non-free

2007-02-05 Thread James Andrewartha
Robert: There are plenty of other trademark policies for GPL software
out there http://lwn.net/Articles/216049/ however most of the trademarks
are not aggressively enforced. A notable exception is Red Hat - RHEL is
GPLed, but Red Hat is a trademark, so people who exercise their GPL
rights have to rename the result http://www.redhat.com/f/pdf/corp/RH-
3573_284204_TM_Gd.pdf so we end up with CentOS.

A strict reading of many of the other policies would result in mass
renaming of many packages, but (IANAL) trademarks are controlled by
actual enforcement actions, not policies, so in practice this doesn't
happen.

So there's lots of trademark policies out there, and trademark law is
not incompatible with Free Software, but the actual enforcement varies a
lot and there's not currently a standard trademark policy that allows
use by the free software community but retains the right to smack down
bad people (eg distributors of firefox with viruses).
http://tieguy.org/blog/2005/09/16/fri-16-sep-2005/
http://tieguy.org/blog/index.php?s=trademarkpaged=2 and we can but hope
Luis will write the one true GPTML once he finishes his degree.

Back to the point, the difference between mysql-query-browser and
firefox is that MySQL AB doesn't aggressively enforce its trademarks
against distributions who ship versions of MySQL software. IANAL, but
the lack of enforcement gives tacit approval of this use of the MySQL
trademark by distributions, despite it not being permitted by the MySQL
trademark policy.

[Bug 51315] Re: udevd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server

2006-11-17 Thread James Andrewartha
A better bug report is http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=375215 which gives the following solution (which
wfm):

I guess I could have been clearer on these, in your libnss-ldap.conf:
nss_reconnect_tries 1
nss_reconnect_sleeptime 1
nss_reconnect_maxsleeptime 8
nss_reconnect_maxconntries 2

which makes nss-ldap fail a lot faster. For those bringing up single
user mode, if it hangs, you can get a sulogin prompt by pressing ctrl-
alt-del after libnss-ldap has completely timed out.
