[Bug 664190] Re: 2.6.35 kernel regression in video / High CPU Xorg on Resume

2010-11-30 Thread James Deibele
I have the same problem with 2.6.37-7 (natty).

I will have Xorg spike at 17% or 50% or more of CPU when moving mouse.
There I just hit 34%. And 37%.

Only reliable way to fix is to reboot.

I only have pidgin and chromium (daily) running.

Re: [Bug 607223] Re: [211711.645837] ------------[ cut here ]------------

2010-07-21 Thread James Deibele
I've had it fail in a different way a couple of times.

Symptoms are that the machine comes back but nothing is output to the
screen. The monitor light changes from orange (no signal from computer) to
blue but there's nothing visible. Interestingly by turning off the monitor
and turning it back on I could get a glimpse of something on the screen but
it doesn't last long enough for me to tell me much other than it looks like
my normal desktop.

I wish there was an option to do what my MacBook does: suspend
hibernate. If power stays on, resume from suspend. If not, resume from
hibernate. But you probably wish that, too.

Thanks for following up.

Needed to add "sudo" in front of "setfont".

Things seemed to work fine with the suspend and resume.

partition size for /dev/sda6 is 4.00 GiB according to gparted (mount,
  df don't show the partition)

I have 4 GB of RAM. Not sure if swap partition is too small to save RAM

I'm turning off the system manually at night to save on electricity.
Not much fun waiting for bootup compared to my kids' iMac.

Re: [Bug 423257] Re: nm-connection-editor crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_newv()

2010-01-21 Thread James Deibele
Hello, Tony.

No, I'm not saying that it's still happening. As far as I know, it's not.
Yes, I was running Karmic then but I'm not now.

If there's anything I can do to help, I will.

2010-01-21 Thread James Deibele
Thanks for the response.

I'm not using Karmic. I'm running Lucid, 10.04.

I didn't invoke the command myself - it crashed and I was just reporting it.
I'd repeat it if I could but I don't know how.

[Bug 500379] [NEW] white side always on bottom

2009-12-25 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnuchess

I have selected black for human. The board always starts out with
black on top and white on bottom, then switches.

It's not too bad when it's a new game. But it's very difficult to see
my position when resuming a game.

I'm using black because I'm trying to improve my game and I want to see
what the program is trying to do so I can react to it.

OK. First (totem.txt) is with desktop effects set to none. I can't
use this on a regular basis because FireFox doesn't like it - screen
flickering, etc.

Second is with desktop effects set to normal. Hmmm. OK, can't attach
more than one file at a time. This is desktop effects set to none.

Re: [Bug 496079] Re: totem crashes when trying to play a video - Trace/breakpoint trap

2009-12-15 Thread James Deibele
I can't seem to do that. I get this:

 libgtk2.0-0-dbg: Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (= 2.19.1-1) but 2.19.1-1ubuntu1 is
to be installed

I did have the ubuntu-desktop PPA set up as an alternate source. I was
getting warnings about the libgtk2.0-0-dbg not being authorized so I tried
removing the PPA and updating.

The other two libraries installed fine.

I tried running gdb but it gave me this:

(gdb) break gdk_x_error
Function "gdk_x_error" not defined.
Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) n

I'm using the latest (195.22) driver from Nvidia for my GeForce 8600 GT
card.

Thanks very much for the response. I've cut out all of the 3rd party
sources (except Google) to avoid leakage from them into the alpha. Sorry if
that's caused this problem or preventing me from helping to find it.

[Bug 497037] [NEW] update manager doesn't prompt for password, doesn't apply updates

2009-12-15 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I get the "updates" icon on the top panel. Right clicking and selecting
"show updates" shows them. But pushing the install button doesn't
prompt for authorization and doesn't apply patches. I do see "reading
package lists" and a couple of other messages.

I'm using sudo apt-get update to apply patches.

Using the standard (left) click acts the same - no prompt for
authorization.

[Bug 496079] [NEW] totem crashes when trying to play a video - Trace/breakpoint trap

2009-12-12 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Trying to play a video. Totem told me I was missing a plugin. Told me
which one (gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg) but didn't install it properly. I did
that with apt-get install. Tried to play the movie as "totem

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line

[Bug 496075] [NEW] pidgin crashes with a "Trace/breakpoint trap" message

2009-12-12 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I'm running the first alpha of Lucid Lynx.

I've tried installing 3 versions of Nvidia's drivers from their site.
With all 3 versions, pidgin has not worked. I don't know if that's
related to the video drivers or not but Transmission, for example,
didn't work with 190.42 (I believe) or 190.55 but does work with 195.22.

This is a clean install. I had problems with audio when I tried
upgrading and it seemed better to just install a couple of hours ago.

[Bug 496074] [NEW] firefox flickers rapidly and renders system unusable

2009-12-12 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

I'm running the first alpha of Lucid Lynx.

I've tried installing 3 versions of Nvidia's drivers from their site.
With the first one, 190.42 (I believe), things worked fine. With the
last two 190.53 and 195.22 Firefox "goes crazy" - it flickers rapidly in
such a way to make the other windows unusable. I end up logging out
because I can't close the Firefox window.

2009-10-14 Thread James Deibele
Hello, Joshua.

Thanks for testing this out. I plan on sticking with Google's version of
Chrome for now. I imagine that it will start working with Ubuntu One on
the next release (of Chrome).

Thanks again.

partition size for /dev/sda6 is 4.00 GiB according to gparted (mount,
df don't show the partition)

I have 4 GB of RAM. Not sure if swap partition is too small to save RAM

I'm turning off the system manually at night to save on electricity.
Not much fun waiting for bootup compared to my kids' iMac.

[Bug 422610] Re: extremely poor performance

2009-10-07 Thread James Deibele
I'm doing almost the same quantity: 70M worth of data in 7868 (according
to the Ubuntu One client) files. Files are being uploaded at the rate
of 2 or 3 per hour.

One (maybe unusual) thing that I'm doing: ~/Ubuntu One is a symbolic
link to ~/Dropbox

[Bug 414925] [NEW] logo keeps spinning even though no files updated

2009-08-17 Thread James Deibele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Logo keeps spinning indicating activity. "top" from terminal shows
light (0-2% of CPU) activity.

Possible cause? I use Dropbox, too.Files are in /Dropbox with
symlinks from /Ubuntu One to /Dropbox

I've been on vacation and there's been no activity in the folder. So
things should be quiet.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 148131 ***

Public bug reported:

Trying to print a document. When I select print, I have the options to
pick print-to-file or the Brother MFC-8840D that's on the network. If
I select the Brother printer, it doesn't allow me to print, just do a
print preview.

I suspect there's something in my printer configuration that's wrong and
that's crashing evince.

I'm using Hardy Heron with everything up to date as of 2 or 3 hours ago.

Re: [Bug 196864] Re: evolution/nautilus issue: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-03 Thread James Deibele
Thanks very much! I do appreciate you trying to make Ubuntu better. I
get grumpy trying to work with stuff written for programmers because I'm not
one. One of the things that drives me crazy is that launchpad shows me two
pages of similar bugs - but on the second page,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+filebug/njx0vSJvm7PD8QV0JipkXT8Lm1p,
it doesn't show the bug description for what I'm reporting.I do want to
help and not report bugs that have already been reported but it's not as
easy as it could be. Anyway, I've reported the bug.

I probably should be working with 7.10 but I like the new features of
Hardy.

Best!
