[Bug 1975624] [NEW] d3d12 build regression: d3d12video.h: error: expected ‘;’ at end of member declaration

2022-05-24 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Surprised not to see an issue reported here as it seems to be impacting
compiling Mesa-dev on Jammy and Kinetic. Perhaps I'm in the wrong
place, but seems right.

It seems there is an issue prior to 1.602.0-r1 as documented here:-

Note that this machine shows the 2.0.6 version, but I have verified on 2
other machines that the fix works I have left this one with the
older version so that I know whenever it gets updated from the repo.

[Bug 1894234] [NEW] Bluetooth not working with Gnome in Groovy (20.10)

2020-09-04 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Having plugged in a USB bluetooth dongle, the gnome-bluetooth settiogs
report that I have no bluetooth adapter, and I should plug one in.

At the same time, I can see the bluetooth adapter with hciconfig, and in
fact, I can pair with remote bluetooth devices using a 3rd party
bluetooth manager (blueman).

Obviously this is not ideal, as it is not fully integrated with gnome,
sound devices are not fully available etc..

I'm not sure what else I can provide, but:-

[Bug 1894151] [NEW] Screenshot related keyboard shortcuts not working in groovy

2020-09-03 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

I've been testing groovy, and for the last couple of days (Since some
time around the last few days of August), the screenshot related
shortcuts like "printscreen" or "shift+printscreen" have stopped
working.

I've tried re-defining them in the shortcuts menu, but they just don't
work I hope this is fixed before release, as I use
"shift+printscreen" a LOT!

What actually happened instead, was "absolutely nothing"... :)

Hope this helps.

Public bug reported:

After using the following commands to create a mixer to add a soundboard
to a mic input using pulseaudio, I notice that the "device description"
is displayed correctly in each tab, but in the "Recording" tab it just
shows "Null Output" for each device.

pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=MUSIC
pacmd 'update-sink-proplist MUSIC device.description="Dummy Input"'
pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=MIXER
pacmd 'update-sink-proplist MIXER device.description="Dummy Mixer"'
pactl load-module module-loopback
sink="alsa_output.pci-_00_1f.3.analog-stereo"
pactl load-module module-loopback sink="MIXER"
pactl load-module module-loopback sink="MIXER"

As you can imagine, it makes it hard to work out what's going on when
devices all have the same name!

2017-11-07 Thread James Lewis
This just happened to me while upgrading from 17.04 to 17.10. It
may be hard to replicate, but if the screen locks at the wrong moment,
after the system has started updating packages it leaves it in a state
where it cannot be unlocked.

I was left with a locked system, and an incomplete upgrade which I am
still attempting to repair manually.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Make the panel and dock transparency configurable

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1528915 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1528915

I understand that it's not you specifically, and I apologise that I did
not find the earlier duplicate... the search did not find it, although
to be fair it is more than 2 years old, and logged against a respin...
which makes me think it's a hopeless cause like many other issues,
how likely is a duplicate of a 2 year old issue in the gnome respin ever
likely to be considered again?

I cannot deny that the work done to make Gnome 3 acceptable to regular
Ubuntu users over the last few months has been nothing more than
incredible, but I can't help but think it shouldn't have been necessary.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
You know... I thought things might have changed, if those working on the
project don't like something, but can't get it changed, what hope do I
have?? Why mark this bug as invalid if you agree that it's a problem.

Canonical's customers do not understand the shifting relationships
between different components of the distribution, let alone what this
new relationship with upstream gnome means... I have no idea where else
to report such a thing.

So, be it, I have reported it, Canonical doesn't care, end of story...
just like almost every other bug I've ever reported. I wonder why I
bother.

[Bug 1730195] [NEW] Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

The new launcher in Ubuntu 17.10's gnome-shell setup has auto
transparency... but this is also applied to the top bar, which it was
not in Unity.

As a result, using a light background makes the light icons in the bar
almost invisible.

The top bar transparency should not be linked to the launcher, and
probably there should not be transparrency on the top bar.

It would also be nice if there was a slider to control the level of
transparrency in the launcher.

See attached image of near invisible icons.

[Bug 1683415] Re: do-release-upgrade unecessarily disables PPA's which are not release specific

2017-04-17 Thread James Lewis
It seems that in the past it was the case that if one package source
failed, then no updates would be executed by the update manager. I'm
not certain if this issue has been fixed.

As regards the issue raised above, it does seem that simply disabling
sources/PPA's after software is already installed is a dangerous course
of action as security issues may arise perhaps if the first issue
was resolved, an additional step in the upgrade process to allow the
user to either re-enable, or purge sources/PPA's could be included. Any
sources referencing the old release could be stepped forward, and
sources using a generic release ID such as Chrome would need no
modification...

Ultimately, it is obviously desirable to give the user a clean upgrade,
but perhaps not at the expense of then being exposed to major security
risk.

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications with WM_WINDOW_ROLE or window title set

2016-10-26 Thread James Lewis
This is perhaps a perfect example of the issue many people have, and
which people I've converted to Ubuntu complain about (to me), on a
regular basis...

Reading the history of this bug, it seems that a consensus was reached
on the correct solution, in 2010, but we are fast approaching 2017 and
nothing has changed.

Hopefully Unity8 will address some of these issues, and render this 10
year old bug finally resolved by virtue of being obsolete.

[Bug 1576574] [NEW] dekko sending sensitive to poor network, can loose emails

2016-04-29 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

When sending a message on Dekko, there is no local "outgoing" folder, so
if a message it being send while the network is poor, the sending
process will hang, and cannot be aborted...

There is no way then to save the email, and if the network is not
restored... and even if the network is working, it may never recover, or
retry sending later.

Also no background sending. I spend a lot of time on rather suspect

[Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-29 Thread James Lewis
+Olivier Tilloy Never hiding it in desktop mode should be very
obvious... but this is something of a middle ground where it's being
used in tablet mode. The screen is large enough to switch into the
tabbed mode, but it's still using a touch interface on a small screen...
I'm not sure what the best thing to do there is, I certainly enjoy the
"full browser" experience on the tablet even in touch mode, so I would
definitely not want to go back to the mobile interface...

Short of some other solution which does not force the viewport to change
(like bringing in the url bar over the top of the rendered HTML, rather
than changing the size of the viewport)... I can't see much other
option, I think google does leave the URL bar there on android in this
context.

[Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-28 Thread James Lewis
+Chris Coulson

I'm not disputing what you say, since I'm not in a position to fix this
issue, however if the solution suggested by +Daniel Bull is not correct
then can you clarify what would be the correct solution, since currently
on the M10 tablet, Google+ is unusable.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you are saying that on the M10, it
"gets the standard desktop UI", so since it's 1920x1200 and still hides
the location bar, are you suggesting this is a bug, and the location bar
should be displayed all the time?

I'm actually pretty happy with the solution of simply not hiding the
location bar, as you say, this would be expected behaviour on a
"desktop" browser, it would certainly also be nice to have some control
over the UI scaling since in desktop mode apps are still scaled like
mobile apps, but I'm sure that's coming.

I notice that part of the Google UI also auto-hides, but I guess they
would cater for that.

[Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-27 Thread James Lewis
Actually that's a good point +Daniel Bull, I guess it makes sense not to
change the viewport size... the question is what should it be set to...
the site looks better (no blank borders) with the viewport set to the
largest size it's going to be... but by rights, if the page tries to
render inside that area so that it won't be scrolled, then it should be
set to the smallest size it's going to be.

2015-11-14 Thread James Lewis
It looks to me like the decision whether to honour the orientation
restriction in the .desktop file is keyed on if an external screen is in
use, not if the shell is running in windowed mode... clearly for some
deviices operating in windowed mode on the built in screen would be
desirable.

[Bug 1516274] [NEW] In windowed mode, mouse scroll wheel does not always scroll the window on top

2015-11-14 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

In windowed mode BT mouse scroll wheel does not appear to cope with
overlapping windows... grab/drag to scroll the window works, but using
the scroll wheel somtimes scrolls the window that is behind, where two
windows overlap.

[Bug 1515977] Re: Shell rotates inappropriately in windowed mode

2015-11-14 Thread James Lewis
Also, the lock screen has a fixed orientation, so using the device in
windowed mode in a different orientation to the lock screen will mean
that if the screen locks the orientation will change and cannot be
changed back without returning to staged mode.

[Bug 1375674] Re: Network proxy settings GUI does not have "no proxy for"

2015-09-08 Thread James Lewis
Confirmed still present in 15.10, I imagine at this point it's more
critical to ensure that this is resolved in Unity8, but there will still
be another full cycle of LTS where this will be an issue, it seems like
a pretty trivial addition.

[Bug 1441241] Re: Ubuntu Nexus 4 does not detect location

2015-04-14 Thread James Lewis
This does appear to work for me, but after soem experimentation with
another Nexus 4 user, it seems that it's very weak... the phone fails to
get a GPS lock when in a case, but can when it's not in the case... I
don't know how much of the GPS system is implemented in Software vs how
much is in hardware... I'm told the GPS on the Nexus 4 is good under
Android although I have not tested this...

[Bug 1409678] [NEW] Bluetooth settings provides no way to distinguish bluetooth devices.

2015-01-12 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Both on the phone, and on the desktop there is no way to tell the
difference between similar paired bluetooth devices when connecting... I
have several different bluetooth receivers for headphones, in the car
and in the house and garage... each uses the same chip and these devices
are labeled the same so I now have to select from a list of 4 identical
labels to connect to one of these.

Other environments are able to rename bluetooth devices such that it is
possible to dell one device from another.

[Bug 1320752] Re: MAC Spoofing / Cloning for WiFi is broken in Trusty 14.04 / 14.10 and all others including Mint 17

2014-12-12 Thread James Lewis
Just encountered this on a Lenovo laptop with the built in Intel WiFi,
before I found this bug I discovered that if you bring the interface
down change the mac address and bring it back up again before network
manager starts, and then restart network manager some time after the
user logs in, it will connect successfully... not sure why.

[Bug 1389275] Re: Updating from 14.04 to 14.10 created a snapshot, but it did so AFTER updating the sources.

2014-11-06 Thread James Lewis
+Tim Gardner

I completely agree, I could swear I put update-manager in the bug
originally... I guess it's not a published feature that update-
manager takes a snapshot before upgrading, and there's clearly no GUI
way to roll back, but this is a truely great feature, it saved my bacon
so I'm glad it's there, but I thought it was worth reporting that the
point where the snapshot is taken is a little too late in the process.

Public bug reported:

Using BTRFS to allow snapshot rollback from version updates actually

2014-11-04 Thread James Lewis
I cannot provide the output of apport since the issue occurred before
the upgrade process which is now complete... however I think it's fairly
obvious, this is a procedural issue, not a crash... the BTRFS snapshot
needs to happen before it starts making changes to perform the update.

[Bug 1386339] Re: cryptswap can fail if random data matches a filesystem magic number

2014-10-28 Thread James Lewis
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected utopic

** Description changed:

I noticed that my encrypted swap was not working, and I found that the
randomly generated encrypted filesystem had randomly generated data that
had the magic number of a filesystem type, and hence ever more it
  refused to start...

  Eg:-

  root@hardline:/etc# more /etc/crypttab
  cryptswap1 /dev/sda3 /dev/urandom swap,cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256

  root@hardline:/etc# cryptdisks_start cryptswap1
   * Starting crypto disk...
   * cryptswap1 (starting)..
   * cryptswap1: the precheck for '/dev/sda3' failed:  - The device /dev/sda3
contains a filesystem type hfsplus.
   * cryptswap1 (failed)...
[fail]

Obviosuly this is not a filesystem:-

  root@hardline:/etc# mount -t hfsplus /dev/sda3 /mnt
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

So I blanked it and restarted, all is now well... perhaps if there's a
force option on cryptsetup this should be used in the setup scripts:-

  root@hardline:/etc# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda3
  ^C684121+0 records in
  684121+0 records out
  350269952 bytes (350 MB) copied, 5.96378 s, 58.7 MB/s

  root@hardline:/etc# cryptdisks_start cryptswap1
   * Starting crypto disk...
   * cryptswap1 (starting)..
   * cryptswap1 (started)...   [ OK

[Bug 1386339] Re: cryptswap can fail if random data matches a filesystem magic number

2014-10-28 Thread James Lewis
I have added the information collected by apport, although this seems
like such an obviously possible (if rare) event that it does not take
too much debugging to identify what is happening.

The issue is more about deciding what action to take, rather than
finding the bug... obviously you don't want people to be able to
accidentally overwrite a filesystem, but you also don't want swap to
mysteriously disappear from people's machines... perhaps check the
partition type and wipe the first 1Meg of any partition marked Linux
Swap before starting the encrypted disks.

[Bug 1386339] [NEW] cryptswap can fail if random data matches a filesystem magic number

2014-10-27 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

I noticed that my encrypted swap was not working, and I found that the
randomly generated encrypted filesystem had randomly generated data that
had the magic number of a filesystem type, and hence ever more it
refused to start...

Eg:-

root@hardline:/etc# more /etc/crypttab
cryptswap1 /dev/sda3 /dev/urandom swap,cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256

root@hardline:/etc# cryptdisks_start cryptswap1
 * Starting crypto disk...
 * cryptswap1 (starting)..
 * cryptswap1: the precheck for '/dev/sda3' failed:  - The device /dev/sda3
contains a filesystem type hfsplus.
 * cryptswap1 (failed)...[fail]

Obviosuly this is not a filesystem:-

root@hardline:/etc# mount -t hfsplus /dev/sda3 /mnt
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

So I blanked it and restarted, all is now well... perhaps if there's a
force option on cryptsetup this should be used in the setup scripts:-

root@hardline:/etc# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda3
^C684121+0 records in
684121+0 records out
350269952 bytes (350 MB) copied, 5.96378 s, 58.7 MB/s

root@hardline:/etc# cryptdisks_start cryptswap1
 * Starting crypto disk...
 * cryptswap1 (starting)..
 * cryptswap1 (started)...   [ OK ]

[Bug 977178] Re: After upgrading to 12.04, flash doesn't seem to be installed to Firefox even though the package is.

2014-09-30 Thread James Lewis
At least one of the issues mentioned above appears still to affect me in
14.04.1. I completed a fresh install, and then set up a system wide
proxy using the system settings dialog, I was then able to update and
install new packages via apt, and the software centre, but I keep
getting the popup attempting to download flash and failing.

[Bug 1375674] [NEW] Network proxy settings GUI does not have no proxy for

2014-09-30 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

When configuring the network proxy settings in Unity, from the System
Settings dialog, there is no way to configure the no proxy for field
even tho the under-lying infrastructure supports this field.

Any corporate environment using a proxy will require multiple local
servers etc. to be configured here so not having this field is a serious
oversight.

[Bug 1257880] Re: Runaway init --user consuming CPU and RAM

2014-08-18 Thread James Lewis
I appear to have this problem, or one very similar on the desktop...

jlewis4689 0.2 48.6 3133972 2917960 ? Ss Aug15 10:12 init
--user

I'm not sure what it's doing, but it's using half my RAM and CPU... it
appears to reliably leak memory over time, since I don't have a problem
after login, but if I leave it a few days eventually the box grinds to a
halt in an almost never ending swap grind I end up having to alt-f6
/ kill Xorg or hard boot depending on how soon I catch it.

I've attached the output requested above, hope this helps some I
have a number of 14.04 machines and this is the only one seeing this
issue.

[Bug 1317253] Re: UI scaling and font scaling sometime get confused/change at random.

2014-06-04 Thread James Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1310316 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310316

I confirm what pabouk said in #8, I did not install unity-tweak-tool
until after I had the issue and had re-installed from scratch and
encountered the issue for a second time. I have also encountered this
issue several times subsequently and had to use unity-tweak-tool to
restore the setting.

I have a QHD+ screen (3200x1800) so I am scaling the UI up, (1.38), and
I find that the fonts become very large when this issue happens and
I find that in unity-tweak-tool I see that the size is 2.8x until I
reset it. The reset button says that it will restore the value to 1.0,
but infact restores it to 1.4 which I assume is because of the 1.38x UI
scaling.

This is definitely not an issue with unity-tweak-tool... I simply used
that tool to restore the desktop to a sane state.

2014-06-04 Thread James Lewis
In reply to the comment that 3rd party sources are in control of your
computer... indeed this is certainly true, and I agree that changing
this is well outside the scope of a bug... but it should not be the case
that a mistake by a 3rd party source (or indeed simply traveling to a
location where that 3rd party source is not available) stops all other
updates indefinitely.

[Bug 1317253] [NEW] UI scaling and font scaling sometime get confused/change at random.

2014-05-07 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, with a 13.3 screen running at 3200x1800
pixels... I bought this partly to test out the UI scaling in Unity!...
and I have to say it's very awesome (both the screen and the UI
scaling)... however I have encountered a strange problem.

Seemingly at random, I have so far 3 times in 10 days had the font size
(not UI size) suddenly jump to something much too large.

UI scaling for the display is set at 1.38x and this is quite perfect for
me, it sure means no one will be able to read my screen over my
shoulder, but I that's fine! I had to install a Firefox plugin to apply
scaling there, but I realise why that is.

Anyway... I installed ubuntu-tweak and discovered that the large fonts
were due to the Text Scaling Factor having jumped up to a number above
2.5... I also discovered that I could not move the slider because every
time I moved it the fonts re-scaled the slider moved and lost mouse
focus... and the slider reset to where it was to begin with... I clicked
the button on the right to return to 1.0, and it returned to 1.4, which
I assume is representative of the 1.38 I set in the screen scaling...
but I have no explanation for why it suddenly jumped (when I logged out
and back in) from 1.4 to something like 2.5.)..

[Bug 1309456] [NEW] Lock screen backdrop behaviour

2014-04-18 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Since the final release of 14.04, a change was made to Unity to remove
the option to use the old LightDM locker, which removes the ability to
have a different backdrop while locked! This is a problem for a
corporate deployment!

In my office I cannot afford to have some outlandish backdrop displayed
on it's own while it's owner is not there, so I was using the LightDM's
login screen and lock to display the corporate background... but now, I
cannot... so currently I have to physically switch off my screens when I
leave my desk.

In all the devel versions until the final release version in 14.04, you
could select the locker and revert to LightDM from ccsm... therefore
allowing the option to have an alternate more corporate backdrop for
login screen and lock screen... I think this is quite important in a
corporate environment.

The background is set in dconf, as org.gnome.desktop.background.picture-
uri and that's great, but there is also
org.gnome.desktop.screensaver.picture-uri whcih isn't honoured...
perhaps the new lockscreen could honour this value if it points to
something which exists... the option could be exposed from the settings
for the lockscreen later if desired.

I'm not sure why the option to use the old locker was removed only at
the last second.

[Bug 1309456] Re: Lock screen backdrop behaviour

2014-04-18 Thread James Lewis
I need to test further, as I don't quite understand how if they share
the same settings I can change the login screen backdrop without the
lock screen backdrop... it seems some settings are taken from
org.gnome.desktop and others from com.canonical.UnityGreeter. Perhaps
it would be good to add this configuration to the Brightness Lock
system settings screen so that confusion is reduced.

I cannot redo a desktop image an test finally until after the bank
holiday weekend, but it does appear that some combination of the two
settings can achieve the goal without the option to revert to the
LightDM lock screen however.

[Bug 1304651] Re: Heartbleed Bug

2014-04-15 Thread James Lewis
OK, apt-get changelog openssl shows that there is a backported fix (I
hate backported fixes because it makes it very hard to know if you have
a vulnerable version or not)...

I imagine having your version labeled 1.0.1f and dated in January will
probably generate more than a few support calls I think!?

[Bug 1294079] Re: New Lock Screen in 14.04 disables power management

2014-04-07 Thread James Lewis
This is actually a more serious usability issue than it might first
appear as it caused an issue at my office where since the lock screen
shows my backdrop, and it never turns the screen off... I have to use
the corporate backdrop until it's fixed. Is there a way to make the
lock screen show an image other than the users backdrop?..

[Bug 1294079] Re: New Lock Screen in 14.04 disables power management

2014-04-02 Thread James Lewis
I'm starting to think that the difference between my laptop at home and
my work machine is not the graphics adapter, it's the fact that I
actively lock my desktop and generally do not on my laptop... the issue
is triggered when I lock the screen with CTRL+ALT+L... the screen never
turns off, until I unlock it... then it panics, turns off, and then back
on again... this does not happen if it is left to do it's own thing.

Perhaps the issue is that the lock screen blocks the power off, and then
everything happens suddenly when it's unlocked but if the power off
happens before the lock as it would if you just left it alone, it all
happens correctly.

[Bug 1185771] Re: Mark libwebkitgtk-1.0-common as Multi-Arch: foreign

2014-03-28 Thread James Lewis
Apologies for delay, I have not been around to check this, but I see
similar results... I now cannot install due to dependency issues of a
different type... is there a bug logged separately for these elsewhere,
or should I try to log one?
