[Bug 1649910] [NEW] Firefox freezes completely when accessing the developer tools

2016-12-14 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Since today's SRU to fix a security bug, whenever I open the developer
tools (F12), Firefox freezes completely and I have to hard kill it.

It worked fine with the same webpage yesterday before the update, so it
is a regression of today's update.

[Bug 1636124] Re: openssl lacks support for TLSv1 and TLSv1.1

I found the solution by chance, the directive to configure the supported
algorithms and TLS versions must be inside a directive
it seems and cannot be file global.

[Bug 1636124] Re: openssl lacks support for TLSv1 and TLSv1.1

2016-11-09 Thread Jan Henke
Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? It still exists and
prevents normal usage for my wife's mobile phone. From all I can tell it
is not related to the configuration, as I am using the Mozilla
recommended Intermediate configuration.

2016-10-28 Thread Jan Henke
I am already using the recommended settings from Mozilla (Intermediate
Compatibility), I am just trying to get it running with those, but with
those settings as posted above, no TLSv1 and TLSv1.1 are offered to
clients.

[Bug 1636124] Re: openssl lacks support for TLSv1 and TLSv1.1

2016-10-24 Thread Jan Henke
Your comment above omits the interesting parts, since the core problem
is that for TLSv1 and TLSv1.1 the server and client cannot negotiate any
ciphers, thus while connected, the TLS handshake actually fails.

[Bug 1636124] [NEW] openssl lacks support for TLSv1 and TLSv1.1

2016-10-24 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

OpenSSL in xenial (16.04) apparently lacks ciphers for both TLSv1 and
TLSv1.1. This is causing problems, as my wife's mobile phone with an
older version of Android does not support TLSv1.2 and thus cannot
connect to my server running on 16.04 (Apache with mod_ssl).

Can you please rebuild OpenSSL with the secure ciphers from TLSv1 and
TLSv1.1 enabled?

For reference, this list should also include TLSv1 and TLSv1.1:
openssl ciphers -v | awk '{print $2}' | sort | uniq
SSLv3
TLSv1.2

[Bug 1566240] Re: clang-3.6 package does not install symlink

2016-06-17 Thread Jan Henke
Yes, the clang package creates the symlink to the versioned binaries
like clang-3.4 or clang-3.6. But you are out of luck if you want to have
/usr/bin/clang to link to clang-3.6. For each release there is just one
default llvm/clang release which the symlinks point to.

If you want to use the non-default clang version, you have to use the
full binary name e.g. clang-3.6 or clang++-3.6.

So from what you say it sounds more like the intended behaviour than a
bug, albeit the inteded behaviour sadly does not help your use case.

[Bug 1585928] Re: lldb package does not provide a lldb-server symlink to the current default version

2016-06-05 Thread Jan Henke
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * The lldb package in xenial provides a unversioned symlink only for
+ the lldb-3.8 executable from the lldb-3.8 package, but not for the lldb-
+ server-3.8, lldb-argdumper-3.8 and lldb-mi-3.8 binaries
+
+ * It breaks lldb's ability to run an executable inside the debugger
+
+ * It breaks user expectation as the other three binaries cannot be
+ invoked by the unversioned name
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Start a debugging session for any application with `lldb
+
+ * On the lldb prompt enter `run`
+
+ * Expected result: The application is run inside the debugger
+ * Actual result: The debugger cannot launch the application, because it
cannot find the `lldb-server` component of lldb
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * None, the bugfix adds unversioned symlinks for the rest of the
+ executables from the lldb-3.8 package, which were missing before. It
+ should not affect the behaviour of any other application on the system.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * This is a very simple patch by just adding three more symlinks in the
packaging.
+
+ [Original Bug Description]
+
The lldb package provides a symlink to the current default version of
lldb, so that the command lldb works as an alias to the real executable
  lldb-3.8.

Please also provide a similar symlink for the lldb-server executable.
The current lldb-3.8 package already provides the executable with the
  name lldb-server-3.8.

2016-06-02 Thread Jan Henke
This bug prevents running an interactive debug session:

Current executable set to 'CLion_Test' (x86_64).
(lldb) run
error: process launch failed: unable to locate lldb-server

This needs to be fixed urgently.

[Bug 1585928] [NEW] lldb package does not provide a lldb-server symlink to the current default version

2016-05-26 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

The lldb package provides a symlink to the current default version of
lldb, so that the command lldb works as an alias to the real executable
lldb-3.8.

Please also provide a similar symlink for the lldb-server executable.
The current lldb-3.8 package already provides the executable with the
name lldb-server-3.8.

[Bug 1550244] Re: Wrong version set in latest openjdk-8 builds

2016-04-15 Thread Jan Henke
Sadly not really fixed yet. Up to date Xenial system with openjdk-8:

jan@XPS13 ~ $ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_03-Ubuntu"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_03-Ubuntu-8u77-b03-3ubuntu3-b03)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.03-b03, mixed mode)

The OpenJDK version is reported as1.8.0_03, which is wrong. The correct
Short version should be 1.8.0_77 (maybe with -Ubuntu). Please fix that,
thanks!

[Bug 1550244] [NEW] Wrong version set in latest openjdk-8 builds

2016-02-26 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

The current openjdk-8 build has a wrong version number set. `java
-version`, `javac -version` etc. report the version string of this
OpenJDK build as "java 1.8.0_01-internal", which is clearly wrong. This
also triggers warnings about unsupported version in third party
applications.

Please update the build process, so that the reported version of
openjdk-8 matches the actual version, like "1.8.0_72" or similar.

[Bug 1540243] Re: Packaged version must match version of virtualbox package

2016-02-02 Thread Jan Henke
@kfunk: There is also a GUI option for that, but that is not the point
of this bug. It is possible to download these things manually, but they
are also packaged, so the packaged version must continue to work even
after a security related update.

That is currently not the case, so the whole point is to make the
package maintainer aware he/she needs to update those associated
packages as well.

[Bug 1540243] [NEW] Packaged version must match version of virtualbox package

2016-01-31 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Due to upstream's patch policy, security updated are newer minor
releases. That is great for the user. But the catch is that just the
main virtua box packages (virtualbox, virtualbox-qt and virtualbox-dkms)
are updated.

Both virtualbox-guest-additions-iso and virtualbox-ext-pack become
useless after the security update is installed, as the minor version
must match for it to work. While the virtualbox-ext-pack is arguably
relatively easy to find on upstream's webpage (which one has to know
about and go there yourself), the guest additions iso actually has no
public download, since it always comes bundled with the virtualbox
releases.

Long story short, please also update these packages whenever you upload
a new minor version as security update, otherwise you make those
packages completely useless.

[Bug 1519320] [NEW] Regression: NetworkManager does not show VPN connections after boot

2015-11-24 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Since a few days I noticed that the NetworkManager applet does not list
the configured VPN connections after boot. The VPN connection option
only shows the "configure VPN" and the greyed out "disconnect VPN"
options. When going to the connection configuration dialogue, both my
configured VPN connections are listed though.

Only that NetworkManager does not provide them in the list to connect
to.

Restarting NetworkManager via `sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager`
fixes the issue until the computer is rebooted.

[Bug 1510344] Re: Keyboard Backlight Turns on at boot

2015-10-29 Thread Jan Henke
This is probably related to the change introduced in Linux 4.1. The Dell
keyboard driver can now control various settings about the keyboard
back-light and exposes control devices in /sys to change these settings.

Commit: 6cff8d60aa0aba5583ecda09984dbcb2f24cc28d
(https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=6cff8d60aa0aba5583ecda09984dbcb2f24cc28d)

For some reason the backlight is set to on in certain conditions,
ignoring the previous user setting.

[Bug 1491249] [NEW] Regression: Visual new email notification no longer working in 38.2.0

2015-09-02 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

One feature of Thunderbird is a notification through the system
notification system whenever a new email arrives in the inbox. With the
recent update to version 38.2 this notification no longer works. The

[Bug 1294283] Re: Memory balloning in Hyper-V generation 2 does not work

2015-08-13 Thread Jan Henke
That still does not answer if you are asking me to test anything. I
probably do not have anything to add here, especially since I upgraded
the host system to Windows 10 in the mean time, any result would be
therefore not exactly comparable.

[Bug 1483186] [NEW] Video corruption on YouTube videos (using html5 video tag playback)

2015-08-10 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Watching videos on YouTube randomly become corrupt, indicated by
bright green areas in the video and generally not being able to see the
normal content any more. Sound continue fine, so it seems to be a video
decoding problem.

No flash player is involved, video playback is via the HTML5 video tag.

[Bug 1413446] Re: Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04

2015-08-05 Thread Jan Henke
@GaryParr technically the firmware is okay. It is the I2S support in the
Linux kernel that needs to be finished. We should not encourage firmware
trying to distinguish between running Windows or Linux. The current
solution on the XPS 13 really is just a temporary hot-fix until the
kernel support is working good enough.

[Bug 1477421] [NEW] ownCloud-client 1.7 can no longer sync with ownCloud Server 8.1 and above

2015-07-23 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

With the recent release of OwnCloud Server 8.1, ownCloud-client needs to

return invalid user or forbidden so the error is not obvious.

+ Reason for the backport:
+
+ OwnCloud 8.1 was released on July 7th 2015. This version prevents
owncloud-client from syncing files if the version of the client is below 1.7.
This restriction can be manually disabled, but that might not be feasible for
every OwnCloud installation.
+ Without this backport the essential functionality of owncloud-client is lost
for all Ubuntu release before wily when the server has been upgraded to the
most recent stable release.

[Bug 1413446] Re: Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04

2015-05-24 Thread Jan Henke
As far as I followed upstream, work is being done on this matter in the
Linux kernel, not really in Ubuntu. (Since it is not a packaging bug,
but rather a development task)

Current focus seems to be to make sure audio works in HDA mode. I2S mode
is apparently improved in kernel versions 4.0 and 4.1, but it is still
rather new and not as mature as the HDA code. There is definitely effort
in progress on making this work out of the box with the Linux kernel.

For the moment I can just advise to update to the most recent firmware
version (A03 at the time of this writing). This gives you working audio
in HDA mode. I2S mode audio will be enabled when the code for it is
ready in terms of code quality and feature completeness.

[Bug 1153661] Re: The disk drive for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 is not ready yet or not present

2015-05-20 Thread Jan Henke
You can manually fix both /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab, either using the
correct UUID or using the partion identifier (e.g. /dev/sda3). What I
did to fix the mentioned error message is editing /etc/rc.conf and
adding a `wait 1` before the return 0. This instructs the init demon to
wait a second before resuming boot, this should give it enough time to
initialise the cryptswap. You might want to increase the time, based on
your system's io speed.

If you want to go to a plain (none-encrypted) swap, you can create it on the
terminal with
sudo mkswap path to partion
e.g.
sudo mkswap /dev/sda3

Be aware this command destroys the content of that partition! The
command will also display the UUID of the newly created swap partition,
so you can update your fstab accordingly.

[Bug 1439532] [NEW] Firefox 37 does not enable MSE required for YouTube HTML5 player

2015-04-02 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

After today's update to Firefox 37, the HTML5 video play on YouTube
should work with hight resolutions that 720p. On a 14.04 installation it
does work, but on my 15.04 installation it does not. This feature is
part of the official Mozilla change log, so it must be a packaging bug.

You can verify the status of MSE on this YouTube page:
www.youtube.com/html5 . Firefox 37 is supposed to support all, but the
last feature (VP9 with MSE). But Firefox on vivid apparently only
supports the top row, in sufficient to watch higher resolution video.

As written above on another machine with 14.04 MSE works. I also have
the ubuntu-restricted-extras package installed.

I double checked and have the libavcodec-extra-56 package installed. So
it should work. If Ubuntu decides to deactivate that feature
nevertheless it is a bug and you must at least provide a way to re
enable it. The MSE is an important feature of this Firefox release,
simply deactivating removes some functionality from Firefox that is used
by a lot of people.

[Bug 1439532] Re: Firefox 37 does not enable MSE required for YouTube HTML5 player

2015-04-02 Thread Jan Henke
That is strange, since I am very sure it worked on my university machine
with Xubuntu 14.04 yesterday out of the box.

Setting the mentioned property to true also works fine here. Do you have
some information on what exactly does not work on non Windows yet?

[Bug 1435028] Re: Kernel does not detect already connected USB devices on boot

2015-03-24 Thread Jan Henke
The issue first happened after upgrading to vivid from utopic. The
utopic kernel did not show this behaviour.

I did a short test with the upstream kernel and the issue could not be
reproduced with it. Booting back into the Ubuntu kernel 3.19.0-9 on the
other hand exhibited this issue again.

[Bug 1434986] [NEW] Not working network connection after boot

2015-03-22 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Directly after boot the network connections are not working. I am
connected and have an IP address, but I cannot establish a connection
with any Internet server.

I have the impression it is related to thee DNS lookup, which waits
forever for a result.

Cycling the connection (disconnect-reconnect) seems to fix the problem
for some time.

I am reporting this against network-manager, but I am not sure if it is
directly in network manager or if it is systemd related.
With 14.10 everything worked perfectly.

[Bug 1435028] [NEW] Kernel does not detect already connected USB devices on boot

2015-03-22 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

The kernel does not always detect already connected USB devices on boot.
I have an USB nic and an external mouse connected to my Laptop.
Sometimes these devices are recognized after boot, sometimes they are
missing.

When they are not present after boot you have to unplug them and plug them
again. This is inconvient and adds physical wear on the USB connectors.
The kernel log shows no sign of a disconnect, so it seems the kernel does not
recognize the devices as plugged in on boot.

Going back to kernel 3.16.0-30-generic fixes the problems for now. Given
from the RedHat bug report the problem seems to be present in 3.17
kernel as well. It seems some change between 3.16 and 3.17 caused this
as a regression.

2015-02-03 Thread Jan Henke
The touchpad worked fine for me with the utopic kernel (3.16.0-30). Due
to general system stability problems though I upgraded to the current
vivid kernel (3.18.0-12), which seems much more stable in terms of no
CPU/GPU hangs so far, though the above mentioned touchpad problems
happen for me too since I use the 3.18.0-12 one.

2014-06-17 Thread Jan Henke
@Metta Crawler: But this bug report is about the fact, that in some
circumstances it becomes greyed-out (deactivated). This bug was filed to
raise the issue and get somebody to look into the reason for it.

That is works on your system is fine, but is not helpful here. It
reproducibly does not work on my system, and it would really be helpful
to get it fixed.

My last post simply pointed out that the work around you describe does
not work for those affected by the bug.

[Bug 1316664] [NEW] update-manager window cannot be resized

2014-05-06 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

I always check the changelog of the packages before applying updates.
Thus opening both the list of packages to be updated and the changelog
part.

Recently I noticed on two machines running Xubuntu that it became
impossible to resize the update manager window. Moving the mouse to the
corner displays the resize mouse icon, but dragging the mouse just moves
the window, which retains the same (too small) size.

[Bug 1273060] Re: [Fujitsu LIFEBOOK LH532 (UMA)] Ubuntu EFI install locks out firmware access

2014-05-05 Thread Jan Henke
Satish for your information, utopic has a new upstream version of
efibootmgr included. It might be worth checking if that is fixing your
problem as well.

[Bug 1315921] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio does not boot in Hyper-V Generation 2 VM

2014-05-04 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

Using the Ubuntu Studio 14.04 release image (64bit), it is impossible to
boot or install in a Hyper-V generation 2 VM.

Using either option in Grub (install/live system) results in the
attached error screen after the animated Ubuntu Studio boot logo
(plymoth),

It should be noted that I use the same settings with Xubuntu, where it works
and never showed this problems.
Additionally I noticed that it is not possible to interrupt plymoth to see the
kernel log output, it seems the Hyper-V keyboard module is not loaded.

As the bug happens during boot before console access is possible or any
other applications are loaded, I report this bug against the linux
package. Feel free to reassign it to another package if needed.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: Screenshot of the error message.

[Bug 1307897] [NEW] locking screen with light-locker disables num pad led, while the numpad itself remains turned on

2014-04-15 Thread Jan Henke
Public bug reported:

After locking the screen with light-locker the num pad led is
deactivated, but the num pad still works normally (the keys produce the
numbers and not the control function).

Steps to reproduce:
Make sure the num pad LED is turned on and the numpad is producing numbers.
Lock the screen with light-locker (default Ctrl+Alt+Del).
- LED is suddenly off
Unlock the screen
- LED remains off
Test the numpad, it still works normally and is producing numbers.

Expected would be that the LED is turned on again after unlocking the
screen.

This is just a mild annoyance, but should be fixed nevertheless.
