[Bug 1857022] Re: gtk3-nocsd preloads a setuid library

2022-02-04 Thread Jan Pfeifer
I suppose it has to do with allowing libgtk3-nocsd to be preloaded
(LD_PRELOAD), according to:

https://blog.fpmurphy.com/2012/09/all-about-
ld_preload.html#:~:text=LD_PRELOAD%20is%20an%20optional%20environmental,is%20called%20preloading%20a%20library.

My LD_PRELOAD is set by default (not sure why) with libgtk3-nocsd.so.0
-- /etc/X11/Xsession.d/51gtk3-nocsd-detect.

This feels such a security hole ... libgtk3-nocsd.so.0 can take over the
machine if I ran anything with setuid.

And what's worse, because it's set without an absolute path, one may
create an "evil" libgtk3-nocsd.so.0 somewhere ahead of the intended one.

Am I missing something ?

[Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2016-08-23 Thread Jan Pfeifer
I also started having this issue after upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04.

Sometimes I can see the flicker of the gnome-screensaver-dialog showing
up, but most of the time I just see my previous screen, without anywhere
to type in the password, and everything locked (nothing is interactive).

Typing the password on the blind actually unlocks it.

[Bug 1615207] [NEW] Can't un-remove (or undo) removal of Bluetooth device

2016-08-20 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

By accident while trying to connect a bluetooth headphone (Bose AO2
Soundlink), I removed it in the Bluetooth settings.

Now it never shows up again.

Presumably it's saved somewhere not to show it ... but I can't find it.

I tried to follow instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/bluetooth-connect-device.html

But it doesn't apply since even though device is made discoverable, it
doesn't show up -- it does show up in my phone for instance, when I make
it discoverable.

2009-09-28 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Just reiterating that the problem is still there, in version
4:3.9.91-0ubuntu2 for jaunty

As "z" pointed out, many of the menus get populated as a file is opened,
but still there seems to be missing many templates: like C++ from a
Makefile, or import a project.

This renders the package mostly useless -- maybe it works if one is
using one those few templates ...

[Bug 363441] [NEW] kdevelop-kde4: menus are completely populated, templates missing

2009-04-18 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdevelop-kde4

I just installed kdevelop-kde4 in my recently updated 9.04 ubuntu box.

Not all menus are populated in the new Kdevelop, making the program
unusable.

When I run it I get:

$ kdevelop

directory "/home/janpf/.kdevduchain/0"

I also tried to remove the ~/.kdevduchain and .kde/share/apps/kdev*
directories, hoping to get a clean start. But the problem is still
there.

The only new project option is "New from template", but most of the
templates are missing, just a couple are there.

[Bug 194134] Re: Can't deliver emails on cyrus-imapd, lmtpd permissions

2008-11-29 Thread Jan Pfeifer
hi Daniel,

when i upgraded to 8.10 (from 8.04), 3 weeks ago, i got hundreds of the
following error in my procmail log:

Wed Nov 12 13:27:02 2008
couldn't connect to lmtpd: Permission denied
421 4.3.0 deliver: couldn't connect to lmtpd

i had forgotten about this bug report, so i didn't took note of what i
did to fix it this time.

i just noticed though that after upgrading cyrus this Wednesday -- just
before leaving work -- i got the same problem again (i noticed on the
logs).

This time i fixed by doing:

$ sudo chmod a+rx /var/run/cyrus/socket/

I'm not sure how sensitive (security-wise) are the socket files therein.
So i'm not sure if this solution would be preferred to my previous
suggestion of chmod'ing a+s /usr/sbin/cygdeliver.

there has to be some safe way of a normal user to deliver email
fetched/filtered by fetchmail/procmail. I'm not sure what is the correct
way to do this with cyrus though.

cheers!

[Bug 194134] [NEW] Can't deliver emails on cyrus-imapd, lmtpd permissions

2008-03-07 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cyrus-common-2.2

After installing cyrus-imapd & friends, and moving over the mailboxes
from an older machine (also the configuration db's), all seems to be
working but for the delivery of emails, with cyrdeliver.

I use procmail configured to use cyrdeliver for the final mail, running
something like:

$ /usr/sbin/cyrdeliver -m "$mailbox" -a "${USER}"

But this fails with:

couldn't connect to lmtpd: Permission denied
421 4.3.0 deliver: couldn't connect to lmtpd

searching for it in the internet, i saw someone mentioning chmod'ing a+s
/usr/sbin/cygdeliver. It works, but is the wrong thing to do ... also it used
to work in the old box (a ubuntu 7.10 32bits, but cyrus have been configured
there for longer time, possibly since 7.04).

I have the impression the problem might be the access to the lmtpd
socket file (/var/lib/cyrus/socket/lmtpunix-0.lock), but at this point i
stopped debugging. Hope someone more knowledgeable can easily answer
this.

thx a lot!
- jan

[Bug 73544] Re: enabled desktop effects window decoration

2008-01-11 Thread Jan Pfeifer
I still have the problem (no window decorations) on my updated gutsy
x86_64, with NVIDIA GTX 8800 card -- 3d acceleration is working and i
can even run some of the cedega games.

Among other things, I tried the following describe on other pages in
the internet:

- purging and reinstalling compiz & emeral packages
- using only compiz or emerald
- running gtk-window-decorator --replace manually: it doesn't crash, but it
doesn't do anything either
- removing the NVIDIA driver and reinstalling it from the
System/Administration/Restricted Driver Manager
- Checking for the "AddARGBVisuals" "AddARGBGLXVisuals" options, both set to
true
- No strange errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- Removing most of the plugins, leaving just the basic window decoration ones
- Running "sudo nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite
--add-argb-glx-visuals --disable-glx-root-clipping" and restarting xwindows
- Running manually "compiz --replace dbus csm" worked once, but as soon as i
entered configuration it failed, that is, the window decorations were gone. And
after that it stopped working at all, and i can't make it work again, even
after logout or reboot

I downloaded the source for compiz-0.52.0 and added a few printf's on
gtk-window-manager, and it seems to be running fine, it goes to sleep inside
the gtk_main() function, it just doesn't paint the window decorations ... :(

So i can confirm this is a bug with Gutsy+NVIDIA(my particular board
maybe)+Compiz.

2007-12-14 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I suppose the user is no longer logged in. It also freezes when i leave
a chat window open to someone that goes offline -- I noticed that with
the gnutella protocol as well.

Also, i had this problem with ubuntu gutsy's pidgin v. 2.2.1, and then
installed v.2.3 and the same problem still happens.

[Bug 153027] Re: can't mount secondary sata drive

2007-10-20 Thread Jan Pfeifer
You are right about Ubuntu using the UUIDs to mount by default. What
happened in my case is that the drive was installed later (after Ubuntu
was already installed)... so i simply formatted it (ext3) and mounted it
myself, using the /dev/sdXn style partition reference.

i was thinking, if /etc/fstab is changed to the /dev/evms/sdXn format,
it will no longer work in the previous version of the kernel (feisty)
... so one of the systems (feisty or gutsy) will be broken anyway ... it
seems to me that ideally the package should alarm at boot time when it
sees an entry in /etc/fstab with an invalid device, that EVMS took over.
And maybe have fstab changed automatically to the disk UUIDs fstab
format ...

ideas?
thx :)

[Bug 153365] [nvidia-new] nvidia module went missing after upgrade to Gutsy (from Feisty)

2007-10-16 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

After the upgrade, X just wouldn't start. After hours of investigating
and searching around -- with another computer, as the one being upgraded
would only boot on repair mode -- i found out that linux-restricted-
modules comes with NVidia module disabled by default, so the nvidia.ko
module (or nvidia-new.ko) were not present.

Searching I've seen posts on the web referring to the same problem, so i
assume this is happening to more people.

Could the package installation script check for the usage of NVidia
driver on xorg.conf, and if that is the case, keep it enabled ?

The following line should do the job:

$ egrep -qi '^[[:space:]]*driver[[:space:]]*"nvidia"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thx!

[Bug 153027] Re: can't mount secondary sata drive

2007-10-16 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Found the problem: EVMS was moving, or acquiring the /dev/sdb1 device,
and creating another node under /dev/evms/sdb1.

I'm not sure if i had EVMS installed under Feisty, but either upgrading
it to Gusty or having it installed when upgrading to Gusty triggered the
problem.

Took me almost an hour (rebooting the machine) to find out the problem,
and i have quite a good understanding of linux. Others might be left at
a total loss. So I would strongly suggest that the EVMS package first
check /etc/fstab for the partitions it takes over, before it moves it
for somewhere else. And either avoid taking over them in that case, or
printing warning messages with the problem.

Is there a way to move this bug from linux-source-2.6.22 to evms ?

Thanks a lot!!! Sorry for the wrong classification of the bug -- i
didn't know then.

[Bug 146988] Re: nvidia driver won't work on Gutsy Beta upgrade

2007-10-15 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Just upgraded from Feisty do Gutsy (2.6.22-14).

When X tries to start, it just complains that it can't find kernel
module "nvidia" (nvidia.ko) -- there is no such file in linux-
restricted-modules, according to dpkg --listfiles

I tried reinstalling (apt-get install --reinstall) linux-restricted-
modules -- to no effect -- and running nvidia's installation script --
it generated a module that always fails to load.

Just yesterday it was working fine on feisty :(

do you think this could be related ? Any ideas ?

ps.: my xorg.conf driver is set to "Nvidia". I don't want to use "nv"
because it won't give me the 2560x1600 of the monitor i'm using. My card
is a GTX8800, but i don't think it matters, as the problem is just that
the nvidia.ko module isn't there ... (well, maybe it's generated by some
other way i'm not aware of).

thx!!! :)

2007-10-15 Thread Jan Pfeifer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

After upgrading from feisty to gutsy, the new kernel, 2.6.22-14 just

[Bug 68053] Re: Eclipse will not start (Edgy)

2006-11-28 Thread Jan Pfeifer
I had the same problem, in a amd64 edgy system.

So, for the other illiterate on dpkg-buildpakcage processes like me, I
did the following, and it seems to have worked:

1) go to a temporary source directory

# cd ~/src

2) get the source

# apt-get source eclipse

3) apply the patch, see bug #68380, the first thing there is the pointer
to this patch (eclipse.debdiff), just download it

# patch -p0 < eclipse.debdiff

4) move into the eclipse directory

# cd eclipse-3.2.1/

5) compile the whole thing, took hours on a dual core 2.167 system, and
there was lots of warning/error messages, but it seems to have worked
well enough

# dpkg-buildpackage -D -nc -b

6) back to the top directory

# cd ..

7) install the newly generated .deb (all of them had the version
"_3.2.1-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb"). I'm not sure if all of them are necessary
or not ... but I installed all of them over:

# dpkg --install libswt3.2-*.deb eclipse-*.deb

8) go back to your normal user, and, very important, remove previous
configuration/setup -- that's the way I got things working, maybe not
all of it is necessary. Actually I had previously moved my projects out
of the way first, and the workspace/ was always some default created by
eclipse:

$ rm -rf workspace/ .eclipse/

9) run eclipse, I'm using sun's java here:

$ eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin/java -ws gtk

hope this helps someone else :)

Probably a SWT problem, or some dependency.

My machine, a edgy/amd64 is freshly installed.

After some trying I notice the same problem happens in Azureus, another
