If the hardware issues a hotplug irq when the cable is still connected, there's not much the driver can do, really. We check the link on hotplug, it's still there, do nothing. [Bug 1554613]
(In reply to Pranith Kumar from comment #55) > Is this really resolved? The problem is gone, but I don't think anyone > identified what is really causing the problem to occur. In a perfect world we'd get to the roots of every problem, but in reality we don't have the time to keep debugging issues that seem to be gone. Especially in areas where we've done a lot of fixing upstream. > Also, we need to > identify which patch fixed the issue so that it can be back-ported. Both 4.5 > and 4.6 kernels have this problem. If the v4.6-rc kernels still have the issue, but drm-intel-nightly works, it should be a pretty straightforward reverse bisect to find the commit that fixed the bug. Everyone hitting the issue, please attach /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_vbt (or if that doesn't exist, i915_opregion). Mika, just an idea... please check the vswing/pre-emph values in VBT. [Bug 1265544]
(In reply to comment #35) I notice that the bug hasn't been updated in a while, a patch that fixes the issue exists and can be integrated in the same way as bug 71049 (quirk-based bpp clamping bypass). The fix for bug 71049 is specifically *not* quirk based. Can this patch be reviewed integrated so that we can consider the issue fixed with this laptop and move on ? Adding quirks instead of finding the root cause is problematic in a few ways. Only the users of a specific laptop can move on. There will be others, and there will be no end to it. It's not likely that only a very specific machine would suffer from this. We wouldn't be able to move on. Working around this on a quirk by quirk basis as the bug reports slowly come in, from a very select group of people, for a very limited selection of machines, is actually counterproductive to making the driver work properly for everybody. With the quirks in, it's also quite hard to revert those and try to switch to a real fix when one is found. The quirked machines must not regress, but at the same time it's difficult to get testing feedback from the original reporters. Thanks for your understanding and patience. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1265544 Title: 8086:0a16 [UX302LG] black screen on boot 3.12.0-7 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1265544/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

(In reply to comment #85) I care about getting this fixed, so I'm offering USD 100.00 via FreedomSponsors to the first person who fix it. Offer link: http://www.freedomsponsors.org/core/issue/433/sna-haswell-x-server-freezes- when-enabling-dp-at-docking-station You can also join me and throw in a few bucks there and we'll get it fixed faster :) If you fix this issue (see my acceptance criteria there) please use that site to request your payment. We had a bug in the driver, and thanks to this bug report it's now fixed. Everyone, thanks for the report and testing! I hear a firmware upgrade in the dock also fixes the issue, but it doesn't mean we didn't have a bug. As the fix ended up being my commit, I feel I should express my view on the offered bounty. This is speaking solely for myself, not for my employer or colleagues. Regardless of the firmware fix, I think it would be unethical of me to accept any part of the bounty. I am employed to work on the driver, and fixing issues like this is part of the job. Personal prize money should not directly affect, or give an impression that it would affect, the priorities I set and am given as an employed developer. This is also a team effort. I contributed the fix, but many developers were involved in the triage, and people who tested the patches likely spent more time on this than I did! (Thanks again!) All that said, I appreciate the offer and FreedomSponsors in general, and I would have no qualms about accepting bounties for things I work on in a hobbyist capacity. See attached output. This is a Lenovo W540 laptop running Fedora 20 with the latest laptop BIOS, but the old dock firmware. That is to be expected if the display port sink replies with repeated aux defer messages. Error for the retry limit first, then error for the modeset failing due to this. Don't worry about it. (The modeset failure message comes from the post-modeset state checker. [Bug 1265544]
(In reply to comment #0) Any sequence that turns off/on the panel (suspend/resume, modesetting) results in a blank screen. Wait. Does this mean it works when you first boot it? Does 'dmesg | grep intel_ddi_get_config' give you multiple results, with possibly different output?
[Bug 1265544]
(In reply to comment #13) Daniel, I'm already running drm-intel-nightly which includes that commit. That particular hack does indeed run (see attached dmesg log at the beginning) but the panel is still blank. I saw the same hack at intel_dp_get_config, but in my machine intel_dp_get_config does not get called at all. The culprit is clamping bpp from 24 to 18 bpp at intel_dp_compute_config. When the bpp clamping code is disabled and the panel runs at 24 bpp there are no more blank screen issues. Please try this on drm-intel-nightly, and report what the debug says: diff --git a/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_ddi.c b/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_ddi.c index 74749c6..dbc5a16 100644 --- a/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_ddi.c +++ b/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_ddi.c @@ -1491,6 +1491,10 @@ void intel_ddi_get_config(struct intel_encoder *encoder, break; } + DRM_DEBUG_KMS(encoder type %d, pipe_bpp %d, vbt.edp_bpp %d, ddi ctl %08x\n, + encoder-type, pipe_config-pipe_bpp, + dev_priv-vbt.edp_bpp, temp); + if (encoder-type == INTEL_OUTPUT_EDP dev_priv-vbt.edp_bpp pipe_config-pipe_bpp dev_priv-vbt.edp_bpp) { /* -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1265544 Title: 8086:0a16 [UX302LG] black screen on boot 3.12.0-7 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1265544/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

(In reply to comment #6) (In reply to comment #5) BTW, kernel 3.13rc8 must be working. I just tried 3.13-rc8 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc8-trusty/ and it is NOT working : blank screen on boot. Are you the original reporter of this bug? (In reply to comment #10) Oh, an sdvo lvds output. That explains a lot (dmesg with debug output was key, Xorg.log is pretty irrelevant here). I'm looking into a fix. [Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop
If you're having this problem on an Acer/eMachines/Packard Bell/Gateway laptop, try booting with i915.invert_brightness=1 module parameter (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions).
