[Bug 1751268]

2019-04-18 Thread Jani-nikula
drm-tip works, nothing in dmesg to indicate failure. Pretty much the
only way to get progress is to get a bisect result.

[Bug 1463926]

2019-02-17 Thread Jani-nikula
If the hardware issues a hotplug irq when the cable is still connected,
there's not much the driver can do, really. We check the link on
hotplug, it's still there, do nothing. The HDMI live status checks that
have been merged *might* help a bit, but otherwise, I'm closing as
WONTFIX.

[Bug 1554613]

2016-04-27 Thread Jani-nikula
(In reply to Pranith Kumar from comment #55)
> Is this really resolved? The problem is gone, but I don't think anyone
> identified what is really causing the problem to occur.

In a perfect world we'd get to the roots of every problem, but in
reality we don't have the time to keep debugging issues that seem to be
gone. Especially in areas where we've done a lot of fixing upstream.

> Also, we need to
> identify which patch fixed the issue so that it can be back-ported. Both 4.5
> and 4.6 kernels have this problem.

If the v4.6-rc kernels still have the issue, but drm-intel-nightly
works, it should be a pretty straightforward reverse bisect to find the
commit that fixed the bug. If you provide that, it may be possible to do
the backport.

[Bug 1522922]

2016-04-27 Thread Jani-nikula
Everyone hitting the issue, please attach
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_vbt (or if that doesn't exist,
i915_opregion).

Mika, just an idea... please check the vswing/pre-emph values in VBT.
I'm not sure if we parse them in either the driver or intel_bios_reader.
Check the VBT spec. Perhaps the VBT values are what we should be using
regardless of what the actual link training does.

i915.i915_enable_rc6 and i915.i915_enable_fbc have been renamed
i915.enable_rc6 and i915.enable_fbc, respectively, since v3.15 so those
have had no impact.

These days all of those are considered debug options, and we taint the
kernel if they've been set.

I asked, because I suspected the bisect result might be wrong. And the
symptoms in comment #5 seem odd.

Please try two things: First, run dc4be6071a24 and try suspend/resume
several times, and see if it's 100% reproducible or not. Second, attach
dmesg with drm.debug=14 module parameter set (for the failing case).

[Bug 946311]

2015-03-06 Thread Jani-nikula
Looking at this bug for the umpteent time, I would suggest closing this
one, RESOLVED WESUCK, and starting with a clean slate by filing a new
bug against v4.0-rc1 or drm-intel-nightly. There's too much baggage here
for anyone to look at this with fresh eyes, or if they were fresh while
starting they won't be fresh by comment #136.

The new bug can reference this one for historical perspective, but I
think it would be best to narrow it down to describing the symptoms
running the new kernels only.

How about it, Oleksij?

(In reply to D B from comment #33)
I would do the testing, but I'm unable to successfully install the new
kernel. It would be appreciated if someone could give me a walk-through of
 how to accomplish this.

I'm afraid that's beyond our scope here; please try to look at your
distro's documentation and wikis.

(In reply to Marc Deslauriers from comment #34)
The good news is I no longer seem to be able to reproduce this with kernel
3.18 in the current Ubuntu daily.

Thanks for testing. I'm optimistic today, and closing the bug based on
this. Please don't hesitate to reopen if the problem reappears on v3.18
or later.

The bad news is running the test script three times in a row has given me a
 headache :)

I'm sorry to hear that, clearly RESOLVED NOTOURBUG though. ;)

[Bug 1265544]

2014-02-27 Thread Jani-nikula
(In reply to comment #35)
I notice that the bug hasn't been updated in a while, a patch that fixes the
issue exists and can be integrated in the same way as bug 71049 (quirk-based
 bpp clamping bypass).

The fix for bug 71049 is specifically *not* quirk based.

Can this patch be reviewed integrated so that we can consider the issue
fixed with this laptop and move on ?

Adding quirks instead of finding the root cause is problematic in a few
ways.

Only the users of a specific laptop can move on. There will be others,
and there will be no end to it. It's not likely that only a very
specific machine would suffer from this. We wouldn't be able to move on.

Working around this on a quirk by quirk basis as the bug reports slowly
come in, from a very select group of people, for a very limited
selection of machines, is actually counterproductive to making the
driver work properly for everybody.

With the quirks in, it's also quite hard to revert those and try to
switch to a real fix when one is found. The quirked machines must not
regress, but at the same time it's difficult to get testing feedback
from the original reporters.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

I care about getting this fixed, so I'm offering USD 100.00 via
FreedomSponsors to the first person who fix it.

 Offer link:
 http://www.freedomsponsors.org/core/issue/433/sna-haswell-x-server-freezes-
 when-enabling-dp-at-docking-station

You can also join me and throw in a few bucks there and we'll get it fixed
 faster :)

If you fix this issue (see my acceptance criteria there) please use that
 site to request your payment.

We had a bug in the driver, and thanks to this bug report it's now
fixed. Everyone, thanks for the report and testing! I hear a firmware
upgrade in the dock also fixes the issue, but it doesn't mean we didn't
have a bug.

As the fix ended up being my commit, I feel I should express my view on
the offered bounty. This is speaking solely for myself, not for my
employer or colleagues. Regardless of the firmware fix, I think it would
be unethical of me to accept any part of the bounty.

I am employed to work on the driver, and fixing issues like this is part
of the job. Personal prize money should not directly affect, or give an
impression that it would affect, the priorities I set and am given as an
employed developer. This is also a team effort. I contributed the fix,
but many developers were involved in the triage, and people who tested
the patches likely spent more time on this than I did! (Thanks again!)

All that said, I appreciate the offer and FreedomSponsors in general,
and I would have no qualms about accepting bounties for things I work on
in a hobbyist capacity.

If you still feel indebted for having made the offer, please consider
sponsoring some other task or donating to a charity of your choosing.

Thanks.

Additional datapoint since I just ran into this bug but haven't yet managed
 to upgrade the firmware.

I am running Debian Testing right now on a new x240 with the ultradock. I
was testing this and, just as gdm was about to start up, I docked the system.

Kernel is now saying task kworker/1:3:1450 blocked for more than 120
seconds and task Xorg:1647 blocked for more than 120 seconds followed by
 Not tainted 3.12-1-amd64 #1

I'll apply the firmware updates, but it I thought this might help someone
who was searching for an answer.

Was this with or without the kernel patches? If without, please try with
them. Thanks.

dmesg with patch applied, old firmware

I applied the patch on the FC20 3.12 kernel and although there was no
freeze, I got some scary error messages in my kernel logs. See attached
output. This is a Lenovo W540 laptop running Fedora 20 with the latest
laptop BIOS, but the old dock firmware.

That is to be expected if the display port sink replies with repeated
aux defer messages. Error for the retry limit first, then error for the
modeset failing due to this. Don't worry about it.

(The modeset failure message comes from the post-modeset state checker.
We could handle this more gracefully, but there are scenarios where the
failures we detect during modeset do not result in a non-working
display... while bailing out early would definitely result in a non-
working display.)

(In reply to comment #133)
 (In reply to comment #132)
I have got the following devices:
 * T440s (Kernel 3.13.2)
 * Dock (fw2.10)
 * Dock (fw2.17)

If I can provide additional logs, please give me infos on which scenarios
  (/patches).

Apply the patches from this thread:
 http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.drivers.intel/33737 to
linux-3.13.2 and provide dmesg output with 'drm.debug=0xe' kernel parameter.

For convenience, rebased on top of v3.13.2:

[Bug 1275794]

2014-02-13 Thread Jani-nikula
(In reply to comment #129)
It seems the hang is resolved with the dock firmware update (2.17) provided
by Lenovo. As far as I am concerned I think this bug can be closed.

From the kernel perspective it's fixed when we don't freeze the machine
even when a dock with buggy firmware is connected, which is what my
patches fix.

Plus we need to follow-up on comment #125.

If I understand correctly, MST support is entire different thing.
Is there already a bug/feature req. for this?

Bug 72795.

There seems to be still a problem enumerating the devices connected to the

We currently do not support MST (multistream) DP branch devices. If it

the DP sink/branch device does.

 I have to refute this:
trying to modset or suspend using intel-drm-nightly from 2014-01-26 doesn't
 work with my machine (UX302LG).
Though I have screen from boot using the intel-drm-nightly kernels, for me
the issue still is present whatever the branch.

[Bug 1265544]

2014-01-30 Thread Jani-nikula
(In reply to comment #21)
I just noticed the latest drm-intel-nightly (commit
 f27f16540be56813df2ebb8e1106dd5c258f07c3) has fixed the issue.

After bisecting, it seems the blank screen issues I was getting after
modesetting or suspend/resume have been fixed starting from commit:

 commit b2f19d1a1d7b262cf5fbe6033776afcf6d1ab526
 Author: Paulo Zanoni paulo.r.zan...@intel.com
 Date: Thu Dec 19 14:29:44 2013 -0200

drm/i915: set the backlight panel delays registers to 1

I'm slightly surprised by this outcome. Alberto, would it be too much
trouble to double check with the commit before that, and then with that
commit, to make sure it's this commit that really fixes the issue for
you. Thanks.

2014-01-15 Thread Jani-nikula
(In reply to comment #13)
 Daniel,

I'm already running drm-intel-nightly which includes that commit.
That particular hack does indeed run (see attached dmesg log at the
beginning) but the panel is still blank. I saw the same hack at
intel_dp_get_config, but in my machine intel_dp_get_config does not get
 called at all.

The culprit is clamping bpp from 24 to 18 bpp at intel_dp_compute_config.
When the bpp clamping code is disabled and the panel runs at 24 bpp there
are no more blank screen issues.

Please try this on drm-intel-nightly, and report what the debug says:
