[Bug 2069792] Re: lyx segfaults upon opening a .lyx file

2024-07-16 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Thanks for the example, the bug should be fixed in LyX 2.5.2.

Note that the bst file is irrelevant here, the issue was with LyX's own
parsing of the bib file.

[Bug 2069792] Re: lyx segfaults upon opening a .lyx file

2024-06-24 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Hello,

Thanks for the very complete bug report. I cannot reproduce any crash
loading the file from command line.

I do not see any error in the valgrind log, do you see one?

Finally, gdb seems to show an infinite recursion in regex, but there is
no way to see where it starts.

Is is possible fr you to try to bisect your file, that is to find the
smaller possible file that triggers the issue?

Note that I neither have the right textclass (which is probably
harmless) nor the bibtex database (which might trigger regex issues).
Could you provide this bibtex database?

[Bug 1595358] Re: [SRU] Update to maintenance release 2.1.5 in Xenial

2019-07-13 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Thank you for taking the time to review the issue. I'll try to ask some
information from an upstream point of view. Also, your remarks are
interesting wrt our policy of creating the final stable release.

I will start by the end: all our stable releases 2.x.y with y>0 are a
form of this cherry picking. We have a stable release manager who vets
such backporting on a case-by-case basis. We do not have comprehensive
regression tests for all these changes because (1) we are a small team
and (2) it is more difficult with a GUI.

Since I am on the issue of tests, what we have now is
* a few unit tests
* a reasonable set of tests for tex2lyx (importation from LaTeX)
* a reasonable set of tests of all possible export cases, although in this case
we mostly check that the exported LaTeX actually compiles. We do catch bugs
with it, though.
* we routinely run coverity scan on master branch and backport meaningful
fixes, and have a policy of having no compile warnings with -Wall -Wextra.

I understand that this is not professional-level quality insurance, but
at least we do try :)

The two big chunks of interest are:
* boost
  - update included boost to 1.60: this is typically not used in a ubuntu
build, which uses system
library
  - updates to compile with boost 1.60: this is needed in general since we want
LyX to be compilable on
more modern distributions.
I understand that these changes are not necessary for xenial.
* lyx2lyx: I am not sure what to think about that. I used to think that this
was definitely the way to
do it, but now I see your point about the amount of changes. All I can say is
that reading old files,
along with not losing work on a crash, are two things we are very careful
with. This is what it takes
to have users who trust us. Note that, thanks to lyx2lyx, LyX is still able
to read and typeset files
  from the 0.7 era (1995).

I completely see your point about manual cherry-picking. However, we do
not have people doing that for each distribution. What I think is that
the work the we do at a global level with these stable distributions is
the best we can do given our lack of manpower. We try to maintain a real
difference between what goes into stable releases vs master branch.

What we want to setup soon is a service of nightly builds for at least
ubuntu so that at a few users get a chance to catch bugs earlier.

I will end with another argument towards your proto-decison of rejecting
the update: we do provide a ppa (lyx-devel) which provides recent lyx
builds for older distributions, under our responsibility. This is not
totally upd to date these days, as I have to take it over and I do not
understand anything about launchpad :)

[Bug 1595358] Re: [SRU] Update to maintenance release 2.1.5 in Xenial

2019-05-20 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I am one of the upstream developers. What I can say about this 2.1.5
version is

* we have unit tests for the code, but I would not qualify them as
extensive.

* LyX 2.1.5 builds without compiler warnings on xenial, using g++ 5.4
with options -Wall and -Wextra (except for some harmless Qt-generated
code that we do not control).

* as the last release of the 2.1.x series, LyX 2.1.5 has been build very
conservatively, so that it would not introduce new problems. It does fix
50 bugs.

* I do not remember of any new problem introduced in 2.1.5. Inspection
of the 5 bugs marked as "2.1.5" did not reveal evidence of a regression
in this particular version.

* the only new feature is the possibility to read/write LyX 2.2.x files,
which is very valuable in itself.

I am not sure this fulfills the SRU rules, but I want to emphasize that
long term releases are the main targets of a release such as this one.
We have a stable release manager whose job is to ensure that people can
upgrade stable releases with low risk, and is twice as cautious
(annoying?) for the last one in a series.

[Bug 1811571] Re: [SRU] Update to maintenance release 2.2.4 in Bionic

2019-05-20 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I am one of the upstream developers. What I can say about this 2.2.4
version is

* we have unit tests for the code, but I would not qualify them as
extensive

* as of versions 2.2.x, we have a rather extensive test repository that
checks whether our file export routines (which is the main purpose of
LyX after all) work well.

* as the last release of the 2.2.x series, LyX 2.2.4 has been build very
conservatively, so that it would not introduce new problems. It does fix
56 bugs, among which crashes like bug #1737429.

* I do not remember of any new problem introduced in 2.2.4.
Unfortunately, we did not create a "2.2.4" version in our bug tracker,
so I cannot substantiate that.

* the only new feature is the possibility to read/write LyX 2.3.x files,
which is very valuable in itself.

I am not sure this fulfill the SRU rules, but I want to emphasize that
long term releases is the main target of a release such as this one. We
have a stable release manager whose job is to sure that people can
upgrade stable releases with low risk, and is twice as cautious for the
last one in a series.

For what is worth, the new update mechanism has been ported to LyX

It is of course available through the ppa for older versions. I would be

it should have been done from the start") helps.

[Bug 1602145] Re: [needs-packaging] LyX version 2.2.x should go into LTS (maybe backported?)

2018-09-12 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I do not know much about Ubuntu policies, but I can add my grain of salt
as a LyX developer.

1/ it would be very important to get at least LyX 2.1.5 in 16.04LTS,
since the last stable version is updated to be able to read file from
the next series.

2/ similarly 18.04 should at least upgrade to 2.2.4.

4/ Although we missed the train for 18.04 release, it would be very nice
to update 18.04 to LyX 2.3.1, especially since the LTS is here to stay
and 2.3 will be the current format for the next two years (by
experience).

I understand this comment is vaguely off topic, but I do not really know
who is "in charge" of this package and how we should proceed. Note that
neither 2.1.5 nor 2.2.4 are packaged in Debian.

Sorry, I missed the fact that xenial is LTS, so it is still possible to

So putting my LyX developer hat on, I see three arguments for upgrading:
 * LyX 2.1.5 fixes several crashes
 * it is able to read files from LyX 2.2.x, as found in newer Ubuntu versions.
 * we are very careful to avoid introducing new bugs in our stable series

What has to be done for that to happen?

Hello,

I do not know whether you are still interested by an answer to this
question. We have a resource file that contains all icons for
performance reason. It is not normal for it to override math and not the
rest.

Do you still experience the problem? I know it is strange to ask so
late, but I am going through all LyX bugs :)

\sideset (from amsmath package) is only designed to add sub/supercripts
on both sides of big operators like \sum. The fact that it breaks in
other situations could be see as an amsmath bug. Of course, LyX could
have a UI to avoid that, but it is difficult to imagine which one.

[Bug 1737429] Re: LyX crashes when undoing an advanced search-replace

2017-12-12 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
OK, I can reproduce now. The issue is not about replacement itself, but
about using Undo while the cursor is inside an inset in one of the two
document areas of the advanced search panel. I'll try to see what I can
do from there.

[Bug 1737429] Re: LyX crashes when undoing an advanced search-replace

2017-12-12 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Concerning your comment below the video, actually you do not move the
(blinking) cursor to the main window, only the mouse cursor. Therefore
the undo command goes to the place where the blinking cursor is, in the
ERT inset.

I also tried to reproduce it, even with the ubuntu-provided binary, but
did not succeed. There is something that we are missing. I see however
that the ubuntu binary is built with -fstack-protector and I presume
that it can catch things that we do not routinely see.

2015-07-02 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I tried it briefly and it works as far as I can see.

The only glitch is that the spellchecker does not work until it is
configured as enchant in preferences.

I could be made the default by creating a file lyxrc.dist that contains
only the line

\spellchecker enchant

It might be that this annoyance was already present in 2.0.6, actually.

I suspect that this will not be a regression for existing LyX users.

[Bug 1303688] Re: SRU bug-fix microrelease 2.0.8.1 in Trusty

2015-06-11 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I have finally uploaded the three patches that are distributed with versions
2.0.7, 2.0.8 and 2.0.8.1
Note that these patches are not intended to be applied as such. They rather
intended to be perused. We make no claim that they can be used to upgrade an
existing source tree.

I would therefore propose to use directly lyx-2.0.8.1.tar.gz as full
source tree.

I am not really aware of ubuntu way of handling this. Since trusty still ships
LyX 2.0.6, the 3 patches are necessary to update LyX. The two big advantages I
see are
- a very nasty data loss bug fixed in 2.0.7
- the ability to read LyX 2.1.x files (LyX 2.1.3 is shipped with vivid right
now)

I suspect that the information I attached is not enough for the SRU
process. Please ask me of any information that would be useful.

2015-03-11 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Hello,

Can you check something for me? Please give us the last modification date of
*  /usr/share/lyx/configure.py
* ~/.lyx_backup/lyxrc.default

For the later, I see 10/03/2015, but I'd like to know when was the last
time you Reconfigured LyX that first time the problem happened.

The reason why I ask this strange thing is the reconfiguration is done
automatically when the configure script is newer than the files that got
generated. I suspect that it was not the case for you, and that the date
of configure.py is the date when the package was built.

[Bug 353449] Re: lyx 1.6.x impossibly slow

2014-07-22 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
With my LyX developer hat on:

It is known indeed that LyX has problems with the way display is handled.
Unfortunately,
nobody is has the right amount of knowledge and free time to fix that currently.

I would be interested to know what happens if you add to your preferences file
(usually in the ~/.lyx directory) the
line:
  \use_qimage false

This will make LyX use a Pixmap (that lives in the display server)
instead of an image which lives in main memory.

[Bug 1303688] Re: SRU bug-fix microrelease 2.0.8.1 in Trusty

2014-06-20 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I definitely support this update request, although I am not really
competent wrt Ubuntu policies.

LyX 2.0.8.1 is the final 2.0.x release, which is able to read files
produced by the newer 2.1.x versions. In these stables series, we try
very hard to avoid dangerous changes. Stables updates are supposed to be
no risk releases, although of course life is never as simple as that!
Since 2.0.8.1 is the last 2.0 version, we have been particularly
careful. In particular, all 2.0.x version create the same lyx file
format.

The only really new code is the one that reads 2.1.x files. This one
probably still contains bugs, but IMO this release is better/safer than
all previous 2.0.x releases.

the lyx ppa will contain all that.

Thanks for the report. This is now fixed upstream in master branch. This should
eventually be backported to the 2.0.x branch and appear in 2.0.6.

[Bug 1038162] Re: HUD doesn't work with Lyx until after opening the menus manually

2012-11-21 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I believe this is a bug in unity. The peculiar handling of menus that we
have in LyX already caused problems when top-screen menus where
introduced, but this now works.

I suspect that the solution is in unity itself.

Or if it happens that LyX itself shouold react to some signal to
populate its menus, please let us know.

** Package changed: lyx (Ubuntu) = unity (Ubuntu)

[Bug 880676] Re: LyX spellchecker doesn't work in the Ubuntu repository version

2012-09-10 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
This seems to indicate that the LyX package should require enchant. The
support for it is new to 2.0.0.

I do not know actually what is the default ubuntu spellchecking tool.
LyX probably supports it: enchant, hunspell and aspell are supported.

[Bug 1038162] Re: HUD doesn't work with Lyx until after opening the menus manually

2012-08-18 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
This happens because the contents of each LyX menu is generated as the
menu is open. I am not sure what is the best way to handle it wrt HUD,
but it would be great, since LyX' menus are already too large.

[Bug 1003419] Re: Lyx does not preserve DOS/Unix line endings

2012-05-23 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
The correct solution to this problem is to use
  svn propset svn:eol native myfile.lyx

This way windows users will see a file with CR+LF, and unix users will
see plain LF.

I agree that LyX could implement what you describe, but that would be a
problem for (say windows) users who use an editor (say notepad) which
does not honor LF end of lines. It is precisely for these admittedly
naive users that we should make as unsurprising as possible. Especially
since svn does all the work.

[Bug 897493] Re: Lyx crashes randomly, even when left standby

Is it a bout a hang (LyX is unresponsive) or a crash (the windows
disappears)?

I do not think I have seen such a report on http://trac.lyx.org
