The bug is still present in 280.xx drivers apparently, The only way to fix it is to install 260.xx drivers, unfortunately they are not availabe on the PPA (only latest drivers). The only way to fix this is to go to Nouveau or install 173.xx drivers from Additional Drivers. However, the 173.xx drivers do NOT work on GNOME 3 so you have to use gnome- fallback or Unity itself. I am having the same problems with a similar machine. I read somewhere that I should do it with noacpi mode. I am booting now at the moment with this option and it is also taking so much time. After several research I found a way to install ubuntu on it. I had to do a vga=352 acpi=off and noapic But I would like these options that I turned off to function later on.
