[Bug 332610] Re: CompactFlash on USB adapter doesn't mount
I've tried all of your suggestions and the results are shown below. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in /media. I don't know what sdb1 is, but it's there right after boot with no CF card plugged it so it probably isn't relevant to this issue. I checked with lsusb that the CF adapter was recognised before I ran your tests. ---Results after CF card plugged in -- j...@ubuntu:~$ ls /media cdrom cdrom1 flash floppy0 sda2 sdb1 Ubuntu WinXP cdrom0 Datafloppy sda1 sda3 swap Vista j...@ubuntu:~$ df -h FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda5 19G 7.2G 11G 41% / tmpfs 501M 0 501M 0% /lib/init/rw varrun501M 224K 501M 1% /var/run varlock 501M 0 501M 0% /var/lock udev 501M 2.8M 498M 1% /dev tmpfs 501M 12K 501M 1% /dev/shm lrm 501M 2.0M 499M 1% /lib/modules/2.6.27-11-generic/volatile /dev/sda3 49G 22G 28G 44% /media/Vista /dev/sda2 210G 16G 194G 8% /media/Data /dev/sda1 20G 7.3G 13G 38% /media/WinXP j...@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir /media/CFDisk j...@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/CFDisk mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist j...@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb /media/CFDisk mount: special device /dev/sdb does not exist - -- CompactFlash on USB adapter doesn't mount https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332610 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 332610] Re: CompactFlash on USB adapter doesn't mount
OK, here's the info you requested. (Slightly different numbers today because I'm using a ByteStor 256MB CF card instead of a 1GB card, but the problem is the same: no icon on desktop, no sdb in gparted.) == dmesg == [16888.960018] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 [16889.840733] usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [16889.846142] scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [16889.865543] usb-storage: device found at 3 [16889.865551] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [16894.865365] usb-storage: device scan complete [16894.865844] scsi 3:0:0:0: Direct-Access Datafab KECF-USB 0113 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 [16894.920345] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] 500737 512-byte hardware sectors (256 MB) [16894.926334] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Test WP failed, assume Write Enabled [16894.926345] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [16894.943335] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] 500737 512-byte hardware sectors (256 MB) [16894.949313] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Test WP failed, assume Write Enabled [16894.949323] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [16894.949823] sdb: sdb1 [16894.958405] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk [16894.958876] sd 3:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 == uname -a == Linux ubuntu 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux == lsb_release -a == No LSB modules are available. [Bug 332610] [NEW] CompactFlash on USB adapter doesn't mount
Public bug reported: Ubuntu release: 8.10 Update status: all Important and Recommended updates as of 2009-02-21 17:50 UTC Bug summary: When I plug a CF card in a CF-to-USB adapter into any USB port, no new drive icon appears on the desktop and no dialog or window pops up. The CF card is a 1GB ByteStor Hi-Speed CompactFlash. The adapter is unbranded. I expect the card to auto-mount like all the other USB flash drives I use. Things I tried: I rebooted the computer into Windows XP and plugged in the same CF card and adapter. Windows recognized the card and opened an Explorer window showing the files on it. Back in Ubuntu, I tried plugging in two other USB mass storage devices: a pen drive, and an SD card in an SD-to-USB adapter. Both were recognized by Ubuntu: a drive icon appeared on the desktop and a dialog or window popped up. I checked the dmesg output after plugging in the CF card. Here is the relevant part: [ 2101.216015] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5 [ 2102.090656] usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 2102.120098] scsi7 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [ 2102.129069] usb-storage: device found at 5 [ 2102.129075] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [ 2107.129978] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 2107.130693] scsi 7:0:0:0: Direct-Access Datafab KECF-USB 0113 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 [ 2107.165725] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] 2041201 512-byte hardware sectors (1045 MB) [ 2107.173533] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Test WP failed, assume Write Enabled [ 2107.173543] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 2107.187988] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] 2041201 512-byte hardware sectors (1045 MB) [ 2107.193941] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Test WP failed, assume Write Enabled [ 2107.193950] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 2107.194435] sdb: sdb1 [ 2107.207074] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk [ 2107.207667] sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 The dmesg output implies (at least to a layman like me) that a new removable disk has been attached to sdb. However, gparted shows only the fixed drive on sda. There is no mention of any sdb. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- CompactFlash on USB adapter doesn't mount https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332610 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 233889] Re: nautilus cannot handle
I reinstalled 8.04 and the problem went away. I know this isn't as satisfying as finding and fixing the problem, but it's really nice to have everything working again. My home directory survived the reinstall, so I reloaded various apps including Thunderbird and GnuCash, and they were able to find their files and carry on working as if nothing had happened. Result! My guess is that my system was damaged when I upgraded it from Gutsy to Hardy. [Bug 233889] Re: nautilus cannot handle
Yes and no. Adding the line to .bashrc made no difference. The Gnome 'Places Computer' link still doesn't work, nor does automounting, and all the fixed drives are still listed under 'Removable Drives'. However, PCmanFM does work much better than Naughty Loss. Thanks, Artships, for that suggestion. If I switch on the side pane, it displays all my drives by their correct labels (Nautilus had lost these, displaying just 'sda1' etc.) PCmanFM also displays my flash drive, although it won't mount it. I have to do 'Tools Open as Root' to get the flash drive to mount, which is a pain but better than nothing. -- nautilus cannot handle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/233889 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Me too: Hardy Heron, final version, upgraded from Gutsy. Places Computer gives Nautilus cannot handle computer: locations. Places Network gives Nautilus cannot handle network: locations.
