[Bug 1761844] Re: Very large emojis displayed in subject line and in the email list

2018-06-01 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Is there (going to be) a solution which is a preference for "don't show
emoji in subject line"? I hardly ever understand them anyway. I'm a
grumpy old man who learned to read English 50+ years ago and I'd just
prefer to stick with text only. (unchecking Preferences / Display /
Display emoticons as graphics (under Plain Text Messages) doesn't have
any effect on this)

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2018-05-16 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Similar but maybe not. This is the closest match I've been able to find.
Screens sleep (not lock), when I hit a key to wake it up one window has
moved from one monitor to the other. Always VirtualBox Manager and only
that, not Thunderbird or Chrome or empathy or terminal or anything else
I've found. Ubuntu 18.04 GNOME on Wayland. Nvidia GTX590 using two DVI
ports, one has an adapter to connect to VGA monitor.

started after I had to downgrade nvidia-* due to

[Bug 785702] Re: F8 should set input focus on search box

2011-05-20 Thread Jeff Van Epps
I guess I'm not "getting it". Would putting input focus in the box on F8
interfere with the user doing something else? What? I've tried a few
things (e.g. ctrl-5, shift-ctrl-X) and they still function as expected
even when the box has focus. The only place I can see it would be an
issue is if you were in the middle of renaming an event when the urge
struck you to hit F8 - if you were used to how Shotwell works you
wouldn't expect focus to move from the event name to the search box.

[Bug 785702] [NEW] F8 should set input focus on search box

2011-05-20 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shotwell

F8 brings up the search box but does not set input focus on it. User
must move mouse up to the search box and click before typing query.
Ctrl-f both brings up the box and puts input focus on it. Why the
difference? The View menu lists Search Bar as F8, so that's probably the
keystroke new users will choose.

Shotwell 0.9.3 on Ubuntu 11.04 under Unity.

[Bug 668785] [NEW] [wishlist] Change a contact's avatar

[Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org

2010-06-08 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Added /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf with

alias nvidia nvidia-current

and rebooted. Now "modprobe nvidia" no longer complains, but I still
have all of the other issues noted earlier.

/lib/modules/2.6.32-22-generic/updates/dkms contains one nvidia file,
nvidia-current.ko, dated when I installed from the PPA. Sounds correct,
right?

The only other nvidia file I find under that tree is
/lib/modules/2.6.32-22-generic/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko
dated 6/3. But that is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf so
I doubt that it is interfering.

glxinfo reports "Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig". I
have no ideas about this.

Anything else I can try? Or do I just have to uninstall this and go back
to 195?

[Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org

2010-06-07 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Since installing version 256 I haven't been able to turn on compiz on my
system, let alone have it work remotely. System / Appearance / Visual
Effects / Extra causes the screen to blink a bit and then "Desktop
effects could not be enabled".

>From Xorg.0.log it is loading the new driver and seems happy. It
initializes the GLX extension. However, System / NVidia X Server
Settings on the OpenGL/GLX Information tab says "Failed to query the GLX
server vendor". Weird?

System / Administration / Hardware Drivers shows nvidia_current but says
"This driver is activated but not currently in use". However, this
appears to be a known bug with jockey. I did try Deactivate, Activate,
reboot - no change.

dmesg appears happy and references the new version.

"modprobe nvidia" does not find the module. Seems odd.

[Bug 567835] [NEW] Gnome theme switches unprovoked

2010-04-21 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Public bug reported:

Left system logged in overnight, in the morning the network icon had
switched from an image of the jack to two computers, the upper right
corner had switched from red power button to green running man, window
title bars were gray, and every running program was suddenly using a
different font (larger). This has happened twice in the past 3 months. I
do normally leave myself logged in permanently, and don't do anything
unusual with the theme, although I do run a program to switch the
wallpaper every 10 minutes. Ubuntu 9.10.

[Bug 116750] Re: [ooo-build] word processor exits without error after paste of html text

2009-12-13 Thread Jeff Van Epps
I am seeing the crash of OpenOffice word processor when pasting HTML,
which in my case I had copied from Thunderbird, the text originally
coming from playbyweb.com. OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 OOO310m19(Build:9420) on
Ubuntu 9.10. It exits immediately on paste with no crash reporting. This
happens perhaps one time in every seven tries - I can even paste exactly
the same text after a recovery and it won't crash. The text does have
embedded images, which OO renders poorly (sometimes individual 'posts'
get cascaded, almost always the images are displayed offset from where
OO renders an empty 'frame' for them).

[Bug 309211] Re: Intel Gibabit Ethernet NIC (82541PI) operating at 100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps after upgrading to Hardy

2009-02-28 Thread Jeff Van Epps
I may have stumbled onto a fix.

Download e1000 driver version 8.0.9 from intel.com.
sudo make CFLAGS_EXTRA=-DE1000_MASTER_SLAVE=1 install
sudo rmmod e1000
sudo modprobe e1000 AutoNeg=0x28

It was the slave=1 part which finally made the difference. This setting
"forces it to master mode". I don't know enough about it to understand
what this means - I was just flipping all switches until things started
to work.

[Bug 309211] Re: Intel Gibabit Ethernet NIC (82541PI) operating at 100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps after upgrading to Hardy

2009-02-28 Thread Jeff Van Epps
My case: 8.04.2, Intel 82541PI, stuck at 10 Mb/s, cat6 cable, NetGEAR
GS105 switch. The switch does make a 1000Mb/s connection with NetGEAR
ReadyNAS Duo, on any switch port, with any of my cat6 cables.
