[Bug 615234] Re: Not possible to have shadow on windows with no decoration

2012-02-22 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Can still reproduce on the 12.04 alpha.

However, after some further digging, this looks specific to gnome-
terminal windows; as described above, I have the following settings:

 Decoration Windows: !(class=Gnome-terminal)
 Shadow Windows: all

- in order to remove the decoration (but not shadow) from gnome-terminal
windows. With these settings, gnome-terminal windows have no decoration
*and* no shadow, which is incorrect.

However - if I set the 'Decoration Windows' filter to that of another
app (eg, 'class=Ccsm'), then that application's windows are correctly
rendered (no decoration, but with shadow).

So it appears to be specific to some apps only?

Window Decorations -> General -> Decoration windows: "(any) &
!(class=Gnome-terminal)"
Window Decorations -> General -> Shadow windows: "any"

  (corresponding gconf settings listed below)

Gnome-terminal windows correctly have no window decorations. However,
they also do not have any shadow.

It looks like the shadow is only ever applied to decorated windows; this
makes it impossible to specify "shadow, but no decoration" on windows.

[Bug 802626] Re: vgchange may deadlock in initramfs when VG present that's not used for rootfs

2012-02-01 Thread Jeremy Kerr
I'm seeing the same issue on Precise, with a non-root LVM disk: a
60-second delay in the boot process, while scripts/init-bottom/udev is
waiting for the `udevadm control --exit` process to finish, which is in
turn waiting for the `watershed vgscan; vgchange` RUN command.

When run under watershed, the vgchange process hangs forever, waiting
for a semop() syscall to return.

If I remove the watershed wrapper from the 85-lvm2 udev rule, then the
vgchange process completes sucessfully, and boot returns to normal.

[Bug 522998] Re: XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend

2011-10-24 Thread Jeremy Kerr
It sounds like a new bug has been introduced; this bug was tracking the
lack of PM support in the xhci stack.

If you're experiencing a problem that is resolved by adding xhci_hcd to
SUSPEND_MODULES, please file a new bug, and post the bug number here so
folks can find it.

Thanks!

[Bug 800527] Re: cx23885: Incorrect argument passed to videobuf_dma_unmap

2011-07-07 Thread Jeremy Kerr
I've only had access to 32-bit installs so far, with which this error
looks fairly innocuous (looks like the dev argument isn't used to
establish mappings on 32-bit). However, on 64-bit, it appears that the
incorrect dev pointer code causes an oops (specified in bug 659348).

I've put a call for testing on that bug, that should show a fix with the
-proposed kernel.

Could you try 10.10 with the kernel from the -proposed repository?

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed.

Let us know how that goes.

drivers/media/video/cx23885/cx23885-core.c: In function ‘cx23885_free_buffer’:
drivers/media/video/cx23885/cx23885-core.c:1146:2: warning: passing argument 1
of ‘videobuf_dma_unmap’ from incompatible pointer type
include/media/videobuf-dma-sg.h:100:5: note: expected ‘struct videobuf_queue *’
but argument is of type ‘struct device *’

- this *may* indicate that video buffers are not properly freed after
use

Fix: With this fix applied, the warning is no longer present

Just to clarify: bcbfc24 is a sauce patch that backports some IR stuff
from post-2.6.35. The cx23885-core changes must have snuck in

[Bug 800527] [NEW] cx23885: Incorrect argument passed to videobuf_dma_unmap

2011-06-22 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

In the maverick kernel, the commit bcbfc24 introduced the following
change to the cx23885 driver:

videobuf_dma_free(dma);

However, videobuf_dma_unmap expects a struct videobuf_queue * as its

introduced after 2.6.35, and so is not in the v4l code in maverick.

It's only shown up with relatively recent versions of eglibc - it seems like
they added a call to cacheflush() in the mprotect() syscall wrapper.

Yeah, this change went upstream prior to the maverick base, so anything post-
lucid already has this fix.

[Bug 605042] [PATCH lucid/fsl-imx51] ARM: 5746/1: Handle possible translation errors in ARMv6/v7 coherent_user_range

2011-03-07 Thread Jeremy Kerr
From: Catalin Marinas

BugLink: http://launchpad.net/bugs/605042

This is needed because applications using the sys_cacheflush system call
can pass a memory range which isn't mapped yet even though the
corresponding vma is valid. The patch also adds unwinding annotations
for correct backtraces from the coherent_user_range() functions.

Looks like the mrc instruction is causing the translation fault if the
memory hasn't been accessed previously.

This is fixed by upstream commit
32cfb1b16f2b68d2296536811cadfffe26a06c1b, some initial testing shows
this change to fix the problem.

I'm building a package with this fix, will post links when the build
completes.

[Bug 605042] Re: [armel] java fails to start with eglibc-2.12-0ubuntu4

2011-02-13 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Looks like I can trip this with any glibc version, using the attached
testcase.

Basically, this does an anoymous mmap, then a cacheflush on the address
returned from the mmap. We get an oops from the cacheflush on the actual
coprocessor instruction:

mcr p15, 0, r0, c7, c11, 1

- r0 is the start address given to cacheflush, and will be the address
which we see the invalid paging operation on.

I'm unsure why this instruction is generating an access to this address.

[Bug 673346] [PATCH natty] UBUNTU: [Config] Build-in powermac ZILOG serial driver

2010-11-11 Thread Jeremy Kerr
SERIAL_PMAC_ZILOG allows us to get a serial device on KVM-virtualised
powerpc, so build it in to the kernel to allow serial console on these
platforms. This also requires SERIAL_PMAC_ZILOG_CONSOLE.

Since we now set SERIAL_CORE=y on powerpc, this change moves it into the
common.ubuntu config.

Nope, we're missing some prerequisites for these patches, so can't do a
trivial backport.

[Bug 673346] [NEW] Powermac zilog serial driver should be built-in

2010-11-09 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

The Powermac zilog serial driver (CONFIG_SERIAL_PMAC_ZILOG) is useful
for console output, especially as it is available as the only emulated
serial device on KVM on powerpc.

However, it is currently only available as a module, leaving the ubuntu
kernel with no serial console on virtual powerpc boots.

In other news, the Natty kernel has recently been uploaded, it's based
on 2.6.37-rc1, which will have these patches. If you can, please try
this kernel with USB 3 suspend/resume and let me know how it goes.

[Bug 522998] Re: XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend

2010-11-09 Thread Jeremy Kerr
OK, looks like we've got the XHCI power management patches upstream in
2.6.37-rc1:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=5cc103506289de7ee0a0b526ae0381541990cad4

Unfortunately, it looks like there's be quite a few xhci updates to
backport if we were looking to add USB 3 suspend/resume to Maverick.
These are the xhci-specific changes between maverick and current
upstream head:

- these changes don't apply directly to the maverick kernel; we'd
probably need quite a bit of munging and cherry-picking other patches to
get these applied. We *may* be able to just grab the "power management
implementation" patches, but we might be missing some important fixes in
this case. I'll have an initial look and see if this is feasible.

In general, I'd strongly suggesting sticking to Natty for devices where
3.0 support is necessary.

[Bug 668413] Re: Fan malfunction on Lenovo 3000 N100.

2010-11-04 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Hi Hugh,

when you mean "cold boot", was the machine off for some time beforehand?
I wouldn't be surprised if the CPU temperature was around 87°C after
doing some computational work, but this would be very strange if the
machine had been off before booting.

If your machine was indeed off before this non-working boot, it would
seem that ACPI is reporting incorrect temperatures.

Also, your logs show that the AC adaptor was connected for the non-
working boot, but not the working one. Would this be correct?

Cheers,

Jeremy

[Bug 668413] Re: Fan malfunction on Lenovo 3000 N100.

2010-11-03 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Hi Laserulo,

Looking through your logs, I see one important difference:

>From the non-working dmesg log:

  ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZ00] (87 C)

>From the working dmesg log:

  ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZ00] (12 C)

- looks like the working boot reported starting at 12°C, but the non-
working boot started at 87°C; I'm not surprised that the fan was running
in the latter case.

Would these numbers be correct? was the non-working boot from a
previously running system, and was the working boot from a "cold start"?
And would that have been when it was 12°C where you are?

[Bug 615234] [NEW] Not possible to have shadow on windows with no decoration

2010-08-08 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have the following settings in CCSM:

Window Decorations -> General -> Decoration windows: "(any) &
!(class=Gnome-terminal)"
Window Decorations -> General -> Shadow windows: "any"

(corresponding gconf settings listed below)

Gnome-terminal windows correctly have no window decorations. However,

[Bug 614650] Re: gnome-panel places clock applet in wrong position

2010-08-08 Thread Jeremy Kerr
I have the same issue on Maverick: I recently upgraded from lucid, and
now the clock popup appears way too high (new screenshot attached). I've
had to remove timezones from the Locations panel so that the top of the
popup doesn't flow off the screen.

In case it's useful, I have a dual-monitor setup: laptop panel on the
left, external monitor (higer res) on the right. Consequently, the
right-hand side of the screen has more pixels in the Y dimension, and
the desktop space is non-rectangular.

My preference for the init script is that it's tied to the bluez
package; but the /etc/modules solution sounds reasonable enough.

I'm still chasing up on the config change to build-in uinput, will
update with details of that.

[Bug 522998] Re: XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend

2010-08-03 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Jerone - the linked patch is version 4; there is a v5 of that series on
linux-usb at the moment (http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-
usb/msg33949.html, we'll probably need the rest of that series too). It
looks like there are still a few issues to be sorted out before this
series will be merged.

Is the SUSPEND_MODULES workaround suitable?

[Bug 562913] [stable] nfs: fix acl decoding

2010-08-02 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Hi Greg,

Looks like this fixes an issue on 2.6.32.17 -
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/562913 . The
patch has hit mainline (as of 2.6.33, in commit
d327cf7449e6fd5cbac784c641770e9366faa386), but has missed stable.

Bruce - let me know if there's any reason this shouldn't go in.

Please consider for inclusion in the 2.6.32.y stable series.

Regards,

Jeremy

[Bug 584812] Re: uinput kernel module is not loaded automatically

2010-07-27 Thread Jeremy Kerr
@Pitti - It's not really suitable to add a dependency to the bluetooth
module, as the uinput device is required by userspace components of
bluez, not the bluetooth kernel module. We'd prefer not to build it in,
as it's only required on some systems, and not required for boot.

Adding it to the bluetooth init script would seem (to me) to be the most
appropriate solution, and is done in other init scripts (as well as
loading everything from /etc/modules). Or are we trying to move away
from this?

What are your concerns with the overhead? Is this primarily about
affecting machines with no bluetooth support?

[Bug 588549] [NEW] [gm45] Xorg crash when idle: Failed to map batchbuffer: Cannot allocate memory

2010-06-01 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have had Xorg crash several times while not at the computer, and I
return to find a KDM login prompt. Before the crash, the screen has been
locked, with no screensaver running.

There may have been notifications appearing in the background; I
generally have IRC (Quassel) and IM (kopete) clients running while the
system is idle. The crash may be related to an event (notifcation)
occuring at the time, but I can't tell.

Xorg.0.log.old reports around 2.5k lines of:

(WW) intel(0): i830_uxa_prepare_access: bo map failed

At the end of the log:

 Fatal server error:
Failed to map batchbuffer: Cannot allocate memory

May be a dup of Bug #539938, but reporting separately as it looks like
we have a different errno here.

Running lucid, xserver-xorg-video-intel version is 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5,
kernel version 2.6.32-22.33.

Happy to provide more info if required.

[Bug 557742] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad X201 & T410 & W510 not autoswitching to input mic jack in 10.04

2010-05-20 Thread Jeremy Kerr
@Jerone: it hasn't hit -proposed yet, but it's in the linux-backports-
modules repo (git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-lucid-lbm.git) if
you want to build & test early.

[Bug 557742] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad X201 & T410 & W510 not autoswitching to input mic jack in 10.04

2010-05-20 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Spoke to Jerone off-line, it sounds like the thinkpad_acpi symbol issue
may have been particular to the build (symbol versioning), so l-b-m
*should* be compatible with thinkpad_acpi once it comes out.

Spoke to Stefan, he has an update pending for linux-backports-modules,
which includes ALSA v1.0.23.

So, this bug should be fixed (without thinkpad_acpi breakage) in the
next l-b-m update, which should be coming soon.

[Bug 557742] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad X201 & T410 & W510 not autoswitching to input mic jack in 10.04

2010-05-19 Thread Jeremy Kerr
This looks like what we're after:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=7b2bfdbc0dee5a321b5c02febe157adebd33ab3a

Perhaps we can SRU this and avoid the l-b-m/thinkpad_acpi issue.

2010-05-19 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Jerone: just to clarify: we can't update l-b-m to use ALSA 1.0.23,
because that will break thinkpad-acpi ?

[Bug 548513] Re: Firewire disks not working under 10.04

2010-03-26 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Just a stab in the dark, but can you try this with the disk plugged in
to an external power source (if you're not doing that already?) it looks
like the FW bus is being reset, and so the SCSI layer is creating
multiple devices when the requests time out.

[Bug 541029] Re: netinstall image fails to connect to the network

2010-03-26 Thread Jeremy Kerr
OK, we should check to see if a netinstall build with the fix from
#457878 addresses this issue, otherwise I'll look into this further.

So just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly - you're not
netbooting, right?

[Bug 548513] Re: Firewire disks not working under 10.04

2010-03-25 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Looks like this may not be all controllers/disks; seems to work here
with a generic SBP2 disk interface. I've tested with both a OHCI and
PCILynx firewire controller.

Jerone - could you try with a different FW disk, and see if the problem
still occurs? May help to isolate the root cause.
