[Bug 1300557] Re: Screen resolution no longer works
It just got a bit weirder. I've got my custom xrandr-defined 2560×1440 resolution going. But for purposes like window placement, resizing windows, and maximising windows, the UI seems to think it's 1920×1080 or thereabouts. So if I open a whole bunch of editor windows from the shell, they all appear in (and eventually fill up) the upper-left part of the screen that looks like it's about 1920×1080 pixels large. I can move a window out of that zone, but I can't resize its lower or right-hand edges outside of it. If I move a window over the edge and then try to resize the window, the edge(s) I'm resizing immediately jump back to fall within that zone. When I move a window completely outside the zone and try to resize it, really strange things happen. A terminal window outside the zone immediately disappears when I try to resize its right-hand edge, as if it's been closed. I can get it back by clicking on the terminal icon in Unity's icon bar, but it's very narrow, and it looks to be dead! It's got a piece of my desktop background in it, and nothing I do convinces it to repaint itself. When I widen it, I just get to see more background, or whatever else was in its path, plus some pollution from the resizing UI. I can still close it with ctrl-d though. I can still type commands into the shell I guess, but "clear" doesn't help. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1300557 Title: Screen resolution no longer works To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1300557/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is getting awkward. The upper-bound version you wanted me to bisect is also missing from the Ubuntu/upstream version mapping. Thanks. Could you also update that section? It says that it applies in two situations, but it never actually lists those two situations. Thanks for following up. I read most of that document, but it's difficult in places. That's the only part of the main page (excluding the FAQ below) that seems to apply. If you don't have time to read what I wrote, or if something I wrote is not clear, just say so and I will understand. Let's not get caught in the endless Confirmed/Incomplete circle. I'll summarise what I said before, to make it easier to digest: You asked me to bisect between 3.13.0.18.38 and 3.13.0.20.24. That latter revision is not tagged in any of the Ubuntu kernel branches I could still find. I tried all branches from Precise to Vivid, but many of them are no longer available. The closest I could find was 3.13.0-19.40. The problem started sometime *after* that version. [Bug 1300557] Re: Screen resolution no longer works
Well, I did some bisecting but the results are disappointing. Actually I ended up trisecting. On Saucy, kernel... 3.11.0-12 was OK. Recognised my full native resolution and enabled it by default. Wonderful. 3.11.0-13 to 3.11.0.24 inclusive were completely messed up. They booted in some ultra-low resolution and were not responsive to my mouse and keyboard. 3.11.0-25 wasn't available in the archive. 3.11.0-26 gives me a maximum resolution of 1920 by 1200, which is the same behaviour I observed with 14.04, 14.10, and the daily 15.04 test versions. So it looks like between 3.11.0-12 and 3.11.0-13 something broke, and it took until 3.11.0-26 to get it more or less working again, but the old functionality was never completely regained. I guess that means there are no easy answers for this one.

[Bug 1300557] Re: Screen resolution no longer works
Okay, I got a seemingly successful install of the last Saucy kernel. But it's not working very well: I get a super-low-res login screen, and the system doesn't respond to keyboard or mouse. (It does notice the power button, so it's not frozen). This happens both with the default boot on that kernel version, and with the Upstart boot. [Bug 1300557] Re: Screen resolution no longer works
No change in 15.04. I can add the resolution with xrandr, and after that I can use it. But after reboot, I have to do it again. The upgrade got stuck with a black screen and no networking, but I eventually got out of it with the "apt-get dist-upgrade" dance from the console. I hope that hasn't messed things up. It may matter that I've got the monitor's DVI port hooked up to my computer's HDMI port. It was the only way to get things working: the monitor doesn't support its full native resolution on HDMI, and the Haswell builtin graphics only supports the resolution on HDMI. [Bug 1382774] Re: MAAS can't connect to postgresql
There doesn't seem to be any need to install with the C locale; en_US.UTF-8 works just as well. As does installing the language pack(s) to match the session's locale settings. The real problem is that we have no hook for doing either before apt installs our dependencies: it installs the dependencies first, and only then do we get a say. As Julian pointed out on the bug that was merged into this one, it's arguably a bug in the postgres packaging for neither failing nor falling back on unicode when the system does not support the session's locale, or openssh for keeping a locally unsupported locale in the session. Maybe sudo is to blame even for neglicence in sanitising the environment. Addressing the problem there would have wider consequences. Personally I think we should create our own postgres cluster during installation, with settings we dictate, instead of relying on the default one. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1382774 Title: MAAS can't connect to postgresql To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1382774/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1382190] Re: LXCs assigned IPs by MAAS DHCP lack DNS PTR entries
I agree: this is a clear-cut case for the request-an-address API, but we still lack a request-a-hostname API. Out of curiosity, how did the existing setup(s) obtain these generated hostnames in the first place? To my knowledge they were neither exposed nor documented. MAAS never had much control over which non-node client got which address from DHCP, and that's why we had to re-work DHCP management. These old generated hostnames were no more stable than the IP addresses were: if the container moved to a different IP address, it would also move to a different hostname. So if at all possible, I would address the problem in two discrete steps: 1. Use the container's IP address, not its hostname. It should be about as stable as the hostname was. 2. Request a static IP through the MAAs API, and configure it statically on the container. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1382190 Title: LXCs assigned IPs by MAAS DHCP lack DNS PTR entries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1382190/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1308069] Re: test_prepare_holds_startup_lock() fails spuriously
It happened again. I suspect that it may be a matter of ordering of decorators: RegionAdvertisingService.prepare is decorated as @synchronous, and *then* as taking two locks. Given decorators' "wrapping" behaviour, which reverses the order of entrance, I understand that to mean: "grab these two locks, then run this function synchronously." Which would mean that if the lock weren't available at the time of the call, or if either attempt to grab a lock yielded to the reactor for whatever reason, the function could still run asynchronously from the caller's perspective. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308069 Title: test_prepare_holds_startup_lock() fails spuriously To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1308069/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1315135] Re: xorg.conf deleted during upgrade; native resolution no longer works
It's beginning to look like an nvidia driver problem. I tried switching to Noveau; that left me with a resolution of 640×480, with no other options. (In case you're wondering: it looks great but isn't very practical). Switching back to the proprietary driver deleted my xorg.conf again. After a few times back and forth between the two drivers, and restoring xorg.conf, I now suddenly find that most of the fuzzy pixels are gone, the GUI fonts look good again, the menu bars are back to the Unity style, and looking at the screen no longer hurts my eyes! No idea what happened, or why making the same changes earlier didn't produce the same effects. Let's just hope it stays the way it looks now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1315135 Title: xorg.conf deleted during upgrade; native resolution no longer works To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1315135/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also, I don't know if these are related, but window menus now appear not only at the top of the screen or in the window's title bar (depending on the new configuration setting in 14.04), but also in the classic pre- Unity location: right below the window's title bar.
[Bug 1315135] [NEW] xorg.conf deleted during upgrade; native resolution no longer works
Public bug reported: I just upgraded a desktop system from 13.10 to 14.04, and to my horror found that the monitor's native resolution was no longer supported: the best setting offered was 1024×768 or somesuch. Turns out the upgrade deleted xorg.conf. There were two backups: one with the date as a suffix (.01052014) and one with just ".backup" as a suffix. The one with the date didn't look like what I had before, so I restored xorg.conf from xorg.conf.backup instead. Now I think I'm back in the resolution I had before (after going to the Display settings), but there's something wrong. The resolution isn't quite the native one so many pixels are fuzzy, causing my eyes to ache, and the font inside menus looks a few sizes too small. It's hard to read and leaves a lot of horizontal space in the menus unused. It also makes kerning look irregular. The monitor is an Iiyama ProLite E2407HDSV. It's supposed to do 1920×1080, but the best I can get working properly in the Display settings is 1680×1050. The next step up, 1920×1080, won't show the entire screen — large swathes of the desktop fall outside the physical display. [Bug 1300557] [NEW] Screen resolution no longer works
Public bug reported: My display's native resolution is 2560×1440 pixels. Prior to, I think, Saucy I could only reach this resolution by adding it using xrandr, and then calling xrandr on boot/login to select that resolution. The Display preferences did not show any higher options than 1920×1200. In Saucy, the native resolution just worked, and I could stop using xrandr. It also worked in Trusty in the alpha releases, up to (and I think including) beta-1. But today (this is not an April's fool, is it?) I rebooted after an upgrade, and found myself back in 1920×1200. Again, the Display preferences list that as the highest possible resolution. But this time, attempts to ‘xrandr --admode’ my native resolution failed. The error message wasn't very helpful; I'll try to reproduce it later but it throws my display into yet a lower resolution that's hard to work with. [Bug 1278190] Re: File sync error. (auth failed(AUTH_FAILED))
I did get such an email, but it did not ask me to remove and re-add my devices. It asked me to remove and re-add my account. Not sure what that means exactly. It also said that the change might log me out, and this change would be needed to get it working again. Reading this back I can only conclude that if I didn't get logged out at that point, I would have ignored the email because the problem it remedied wasn't happening. The email points to the FAQ, but isn't very specific about what to look for. [Bug 1243917] Re: 'maas createsuperuser' errors out if no email address is entered.
For the historical record: * createsuperuser is a Django built-in command, not our code. * We have our own MAAS-tailored version, createadmin. * The email field must be unique and non-null, but can be empty. * MAAS already creates a system user with empty email address. * A null email address would be the right way to do this, but Django's supports null values more or less as an afterthought.
