[Bug 775325] Re: compiz windows decoration missing (no title bar etc)

2011-05-03 Thread Jesse Sweetland
This happened spontaneously for me today. Checked compiz config and the
window decorations were still enabled. Unchecked it and re-checked it
and the top panel went haywire (nothing but graphical glitches and
artifacts). Still no window decorations. Hopefully a reboot will help
(second one today).

[Bug 646179] Re: gnome-terminal does not follow the terminal size specified in gconf

2010-09-24 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Interestingly, the global keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+t seems to honor
the custom Terminal command I specified in the Preferred Applications
dialog. I updated the terminal shortcut in my menu to specify a
geometry and now it shows up correctly when I click the icon. Still,
having the setting in the profile is preferable to having all these
command line arguments floating around.

[Bug 646179] Re: gnome-terminal does not follow the terminal size specified in gconf

2010-09-24 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Same problem for me, and ditto on the missing fields in the GUI.
Executing "gnome-terminal --geometry=300x75" on the command line
produces the desired results. However, changing the terminal in the
"Preferred Applications" app to "gnome-terminal --geometry=300x75" has
no effect, nor does editing the default_size_columns and
default_size_rows keys under apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default.

[Bug 564181] Re: [RV730] GPU soft reset infinite loop scrolling in firefox with compiz

2010-08-26 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Re: #19

I was having this same error recently until I followed the instructions
in the X/Testing/GEMLeak wiki page
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Testing/GEMLeak). After upgrading to the PPA
packages glxinfo started to report OpenGL 1.2, my GPU reset problems
went away, and things got much snappier.

Then I noticed that the issue referenced by the wiki
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/565981) was
closed with the status "Fix Released", which means that, being up to
date, I presumably should have already had the fix. (Unless by "Fix
Release" they meant the PPA packages.)

Looking at the wiki page it seems like testing is still underway, but
perhaps it's just out of date. If the fix actually was released into
the official repositories, then it seems like something is different
between the PPA and final packages, as I no longer have this issue.
(Previously I'd get GPU reset loops 3 times a day.)

Since this ticket is still open I thought I'd comment on it in case
anyone else is still in the same boat.

[Bug 569993] Re: [fglrx] GL screensaver obscures window to enter password when lock is enabled

2010-06-15 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Same issue. Password dialog is not visible when an OpenGL screensaver
is running (as I type the password I can occasionally see it flicker in
the background). It looks like the OpenGL stuff is rendered on top of
everything else.

Also, in the Desktop section of the System Settings dialog, if I select
an OpenGL screensaver and click apply, then navigate to other sections,
occasionally the little screensaver preview box will remain on top of
the other items (with the screensaver actively running within it). This
disappears when I close System Settings.

Kubuntu 10.04 LTS (final), ATI Radeon HD 4350, latest updates, including
the new fglrx drivers from this morning.

[Bug 578833] Re: KPackageKit does not prompt for a Password

2010-05-11 Thread Jesse Sweetland
I did some reading up on polkit on the Ubuntu Manpage, and that pointed
me to /etc/polkit-1/localauthority and /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority.
The only pkla file I could find in either location was
/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla.
So I edited that file and added the following:

[KPackageKit]
Identity=unix-group:admin
Action=org.freedesktop.packagekit.*
ResultActive=yes

And now KPackageKit doesn't prompt me for a password, but it doesn't
wait forever for authentication, either. I don't know if this is the
correct solution, but it seems to resolve it temporarily...

[Bug 578833] [NEW] KPackageKit does not prompt for a Password

2010-05-11 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: policykit-kde

(Opening a new bug report since https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353278
was reported against Jaunty and is currently in status "Fix Released".)

On a fresh install of 10.04 LTS (final) with a new user account
KPackageKit will initially open an authentication dialog when installing
new packages. However, at some point it ceases to do so, and displays
the "Waiting for authentication" dialog for 5 minutes until it times out
with a failure message. Creating a new user account seems to solve the
issue for a time until the new user account becomes affected.

Running `kdesudo kpackagekit` is a workaround, but it does not handle
situations in which there is a crash and the user is prompted to install
debugging symbols, or when prompted to complete the installation of
language packs, or other automated prompts (codecs, flash, proprietary
drivers, etc.).

I ran polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update and
the the command now returns immediately with no output. Return value is
1. No authentication dialog appears (Gnome or KDE).

Here is the output of dbus-monitor --session as I ran the polkit-auth
command:

signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=17
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus;
member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.130"
   string ""
   string ":1.130"
method call sender=:1.130 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=1
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=Hello
method call sender=:1.130 -> dest=org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.AuthenticationAgent
serial=2 path=/; interface=org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.AuthenticationAgent;
member=ObtainAuthorization
   string "org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update"
   uint32 0
   uint32 1945
method return sender=:1.129 -> dest=:1.130 reply_serial=2
   boolean false
signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=18
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus;
member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.130"
   string ":1.130"
   string ""

I tailed dbus-monitor --session when attempting to install something via
kpackagekit and I see a lot of org.kde.KNotify stuff, but nothing to do
with AuthenticationAgent.

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2010-05-11 Thread Jesse Sweetland
I never tried the date & time settings, and now (today, just now) it's
no longer working. I experienced a crash in Dolphin (fourth time today)
and went to file a bug report, then tried installing debug symbols, and
now KPackageKit is no longer prompting for a password. Extremely
aggravating, to the point where I'm about to go back to Gnome.

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2010-05-06 Thread Jesse Sweetland
Still having this issue on a fresh install of 10.04 final. I formatted
all of the partitions (/boot, /, /home, /var, /tmp, and /usr) during the
installation but kept the data in /home partition, so maybe there's some
config file or something there that's causing it.

Interestingly, I did not have this issue when I did the exact same
install on my laptop... both machines have the exact same configuration:
same usernames with the same privileges, same partitions, LVM volume
group, and volumes. Both machines had beta1 installed before, I
formatted all partitions except /home during install.

Very vexing. I found some threads about using some kind of Policy Kit
Authorization Manager in the KDE Settings screen in Karmic, but
apparently it's not available in Lucid. The solution for some users was
to remove/deauthorize and then re-authorize themselves to rebuild
whatever access control list it needs. I have no clue where I would
begin to look for such a file.

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2010-04-20 Thread Jesse Sweetland
I can't fault the Ubuntu developers for this. It looks like some
serious changes were made with respect to packaging in 10.04 and I'm
hobbling along on a copy of Beta 1. Just trying to do my part to help
troubleshoot the issue. I expect that if I did a clean RC install I
wouldn't have any issues, but I was hoping maybe I had something new to
add or that my particular problem (missing D-Bus service) has an easy
fix.

Speaking of which ... does anyone have any insight on why the D-Bus
service is AWOL? I think if I can figure that out then everything will
magically start working for me...

[Bug 353278] Re: [jaunty] kpackagekit doesn't prompt for user password

2010-04-20 Thread Jesse Sweetland
I got linked here from another bug marked as a duplicate of this one. I
don't know of a better place to report this--if there is, please let me
know...

I've been running Kubuntu Lucid since Beta 1 and I think in that
distribution policykit-1-kde wasn't ready yet ... it came in some later
update. I've installed and re-installed it and the base policykit-1
package and I experience the same results. (In fact, I did a purge on
policykit-1-kde, which removed several hundred packages including kde-
workspace-bin. I immediately re-installed the affected packages and
rebooted--so far so good. Still experiencing the same behavior with
respect to kpackagekit.)

Symptoms are this:
 - policykit-1 is installed, as are policykit-1-kde and policykit-1-gnome
 - polkitd is running
 - polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 is running
 -
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.AuthenticationAgent.service
 does not exist
 - /etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop exists
 - /etc/xdg/polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1.desktop exists
 - ~/.config/autostart/ is empty
 - polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update outputs the
following and immediate returns with exit status 1:

Attempting to obtain authorization for org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.
polkit-grant-helper: given auth type (1 -> no) is bogus
Failed to obtain authorization for org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.
Attempting to obtain authorization for org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.
polkit-grant-helper: given auth type (1 -> no) is bogus
Failed to obtain authorization for org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update.

 - There is nothing in /var/log/auth.log related to this and nothing that I can
see in .xsession-errors.
 - I do not even get the Gnome authentication dialog

If I run "kdesudo kpackagekit" then I can install packages without being
prompted for a password. Without kdesudo it says "Waiting for
Authentication" and times out after 5 minutes or so with a "Failed to
authenticate" message. I am also unable to update the clock.

I don't get prompted for a password at all to apply updates and updates
install without a problem. I do get prompted for a password when
running the file sharing configuration and in a few other places.
