[Bug 1730505] Re: [MacBookPro12,1] SD Card Reader not working

I am away from home for a couple of months and don't have access to an
sdcard to test with at the moment. Is there anything that's still useful
for my to try with this latest kernel, even just if the kernel detects
the reader without a card in it since this doesn't currently work at
all.

[Bug 475864] Re: Unable to kickstart with LVM partition scheme.

2017-11-01 Thread Jim Campbell
I'm still seeing this on 16.04.3. The 'expert_recipe' partitioning string is
being skipped / ignored. i.e., anything that looks like this:
---
preseed partman-auto/expert_recipe string \
  boot-root :: \
  500 500 500 ext4\
  $primary{ } \
  $bootable{ }\
  method{ format }\
  format{ } \
  use_filesystem{ } \
  filesystem{ ext4 } \
  mountpoint{ /boot } \
  . \
---

Doesn't seem to work. I was very careful, and tried a wide range of
options - working on it for several hours with repeated attempts - and
it always got skipped. As a result (for me), the automated partitioning
stopped at the point where it would clear partitions (as seen in
/var/syslog).

I used an approach similar to that provided by Mick Pollard (see above),
and it worked as desired.

As an additional note, I used this line to automatically skip a warning
about having no swap partition:

preseed --owner partman-basicfilesystems partman-
basicfilesystems/no_swap boolean false

[Bug 1617535] Re: geoip.ubuntu.com does not utilize HTTPS

2017-10-31 Thread Jim Campbell
Using the:

$  gsettings set com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url https://freegeoip.net/xml/

Appears to work well enough after initial testing.

1) $ gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime show-auto-detected-location
true
shows my correct location

2) apt install geoclue-examples
   and then geoclue-test-gui
. . . seems to show correct information, as well.

The freegeoip service appears to be well-maintained. Perhaps this is a
service that canonical / ubuntu could move to / could support, as well.

You can update to an alternate provider via:

gsettings set com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url https://freegeoip.net/xml/

and verify the setting via:

gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url

but I have not done extensive testing to see if this breaks anything.
Assistance on this would be appreciated.

You can either use the freegeoip service or use its code to host an
instance yourself. I do not mean to vouch for their service in any way.

Installing 'apt-transport-https' allows the ttf-mscorefonts-installer to
run successfully, but I still get the same "Can't drop privileges for
downloading as file . . . couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'" message.

[Bug 1620636] Re: Fails to pair with Bose QC35 headphones

2017-10-25 Thread Jim Hodapp
Isak: yeah same here, that usually has to do with bluez still querying
for other devices in the background and sucking up all of the channel
bandwidth. It really needs someone to investigate if we can get bluez to
not consume so much bandwidth, or make the query period more context
sensitive such that it only happens when the BT settings UI is shown or
explicitly told to query for new devices on the command line.

[Bug 1722298] [NEW] keyboard autorepeat not happening when I hold down any key

2017-10-09 Thread Jim Kolberg
Public bug reported:

The failure to auto repeat happens in all terminal apps I've tried in
Artful. If I open a virtual console, it looks like a phantom is typing
^@ about once per second. This prevents successfully typing a password,
and is probably what is breaking autorepeat in the GUI terminals,
although they don't show the ^@. Gnome terminal and guake also can't
stay scrolled up in the buffer for more than a second before popping
back down to the bottom.

This problem happens in the Ubuntu desktop or Gnome and it doesn't
matter if I pick the xorg or default Wayland options. It happens under
both the open source and proprietary nvidia drivers. It also happens
with a newly created user with no home directory baggage.

xev reports a constant stream of the following about the same frequency as the
^@ in console:
KeyPress event, serial 62, synthetic NO, window 0x381,
root 0x1dd, subw 0x0, time 2243032, (20,-13), root:(1375,501),
state 0x10, keycode 221 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

If I boot into a recovery shell, the problem does _not_ appear.

My system was built with a fresh install of 17.04, installed my usual
packages, then upgrade to 17.10 when the problem began. I'm certain it
was not present in 17.04 for the few days before I upgraded. There were
similar bugs reported a decade ago, but didn't help me.

Expectation: Hold down any key in terminal window. After a moment, the
letter should repeat until key is released.

Actually: Key will repeat 0 or a few times, but stop repeating before I
release the key.

2017-09-25 Thread Jim Starkey
apt-get upgrade reported that gdb was up to date. However, removing and

[Bug 1717378] Re: uwsgi-plugin-php depends on an unreleased version of libphp-embed

2017-09-20 Thread Jim Howell
I've had success working around this in Xenial by creating the following
file:

/etc/apt/preferences.d/avoid-broken-uwsgi
```
# 2.0.12-5-ubuntu3.1 is broken for almost all the uwsgi packages,
# until this bug gets fixed:
# https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/uwsgi/+bug/1717378
Package: uwsgi-*
Pin: version 2.0.12-5ubuntu3.1
Pin-Priority: -999
```

Then apt update and you can install the previous working version as
normal. Note: If this bug is not fixed in the next release, this
workaround will break until THAT version is also pinned out. I'm
assuming it will be fixed before then here.

[Bug 1718413] [NEW] GNOME Shell suspend button extensions no longer work

[Bug 1713248] Re: pubkey auth hangs on high latency networks

2017-08-26 Thread Jim Salter
After logging in, my actual tests move several gigabytes of http traffic
- downloads of incompressible data in files ranging from 16KB to 16MB -
complete without incident.

I've been resorting to establishing an ssh control channel while the
test laptops are in short range, then taking them to the longer range
and running the actual tests, using the already established control
channel to avoid the need for re authentication.

Literally *everything* but SSH pub key auth functions at long range.
This behavior is consistent across at least five models of wireless
interface, and thirty plus models of wireless router or access point.

[Bug 1713248] [NEW] pubkey auth hangs on high latency networks

2017-08-26 Thread Jim Salter
Public bug reported:

This is a weird one. I use a small fleet of laptops to do professional
network testing, and I wrote some tools that use SSH with pubkey auth to
run simultaneous tests.

The problem is, if the wifi connection isn't superb, the auth times out
more often than not. For example, if I've got a long range 5 GHz
connection which returns 100% of pings but has a median latency of 100ms
or so, auth hangs after send packet: type 50, never receiving the packet
type 51 to complete the auth.

debug2: key: /root/.ssh/id_ecdsa ((nil))
debug2: key: /root/.ssh/id_ed25519 ((nil))
debug3: send packet: type 5
debug3: receive packet: type 6
debug2: service_accept: ssh-userauth
debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received
debug3: send packet: type 50

This is where it hangs; after approximately a 30 second timeout (haven't
clocked it precisely) it falls through to any remaining available
authentication methods - other keys, hostbased, password, whatever
hasn't been explicitly disabled.

Yes, UseDNS no is on, on both client and sender. I've also disabled all
non-essential PAM modules, and disabled HostBasedAuth, RSAAuth, and
GSSAPI on both client and sender.

The same two laptops in the same location will complete password
authentication without a problem - if a pubkey is present for the user
on the client side, it'll have to time that out first before it fails
through and asks for the password (which will be promptly accepted and
work normally); but if there is no pubkey for the client user, it'll
prompt for the password and accept it immediately.

If I move the server laptop closer to the router, so that the median
latency falls in something more like the 50ms range, the pubkey auth
works fine. I want to reiterate here that we're talking about high
latency, but we're *not* talking about dropped packets - pings between
the laptops when they're having problems range from 100ms-900ms latency,
but with 100% returns. (And, again, password auth works fine, it's only
pubkey that has the issue - and only when latency is high.)

I can't find anything on the internets referring to a problem with high
latency pubkey authentication on machines where pubkey auth works fine
with lower latency, but here I am.

SRU justification: The igb driver fails to work when using Broadcom

I agree and am fine with this being marked INVALID.

However, is juliank's note about the implementation of After= a concern
w.r.t. how LP#1693361 was resovled?

[Bug 1711428] Re: cloud-init sometimes fails on dpkg lock due to concurrent apt-daily-upgrade.service execution

2017-08-17 Thread Jim Browne
Hmmm. I confirm what you see.

I think this problem is arising because we have Packer run (due to LP#1693361):
systemctl disable apt-daily.service
systemctl disable apt-daily.timer

when building the AMI.

I guess if apt-daily.service is disabled the Before is not transitive
from cloud-init to apt-daily-upgrade via apt-daily? Not seeing anything
definitive in the docs after a quick glance.

Re: [Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2017-08-07 Thread Jim Caughran
I have an on and off workaround: leave a blank cd in the drive when you
don't need the drive.

Here's one that worked on the second try:

jim@Quandry:~$ eject
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device
jim@Quandry:~$ eject -v
eject: using default device `cdrom'
eject: device name is `cdrom'
eject: expanded name is `/dev/cdrom'
eject: `/dev/cdrom' is a link to `/dev/sr0'
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not mounted
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a mount point
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device
eject: trying to eject `/dev/sr0' using CD-ROM eject command
eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded

[Bug 1702164] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

2017-07-21 Thread Jim Duffield
We are experiencing these intermittent kernel panics running a very
similar setup; using Apache Mesos and docker. Due to security reasons,
we are not able to run a previous version kernel due to the fixes
included in 4.4.0-83 to address CVE-2017-1000364.

** CVE added: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-
bin/cvename.cgi?name=2017-1000364

Re: [Bug 1677448] Re: package linux-image-4.8.0-45-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-06-29 Thread jim
Team,

My first problem was caused by improper mounting of the ISO file.
I am now booted as if I am on the ISO image.

My next step is to install the system to the VM drive but there is no
apt-get on the image drive.
Is there another installer for the root/base system.

[Bug 1318834] Re: Applications can no longer access your @gmail.com Online Account

2017-06-28 Thread Jim Wilson
"Applications can no longer access your [gmail address]. Choose Online
Accounts from the user menu to reinstate access to this account."

This bug is still present in 17.04 with Gnome. I don't think it was an
issue until I entered the information for my Google account in Online
Accounts. Now, the error pops up at every login and is quite annoying.

I have tried to remove it, add it again, remove it and remove
authorization via Google as well as adding it and turning off all
applications. Nothing works.

[Bug 1700746] [NEW] select() on network device loses packets at low data rates

2017-06-27 Thread Jim Hague
Public bug reported:

Using the Trusty GA kernel, we found that when capturing network packets
with libpcap using a loop

pcap_dispatch(handle, -1, dispatcher, NULL);
select(fd + 1, & fd_selected, 0, 0, &timeval);

where timeval = 2s, packets are missed if they arrive at low rates.

I have a small test capture program (attached) which shows pings
not being captured on an otherwise idle network connection.

The problem does not occur on later (e.g. LTS Enablement Xenial)
kernels.

We believe the following fixes the cause:

2017-05-25 Thread Jim Rybarski
I also have this issue. Running "alsactl restore" will allow sound to
come through the headphones without rebooting, but this is suboptimal. I
have attached my alsa-info output.

[Bug 1066488] Re: No sound on Dell XPS after suspend (ALC275)

2017-05-12 Thread Jim Hargrove
Hi, Daniel,

Appears to be fixed entirely now. I was running Ubuntu 12.04 when I
first encountered the bug, and if memory serves it was fixed at least a
year or two ago. I'm currently running 16.04.

Thanks for responding.

2017-05-10 Thread Jim Hargrove
Thank you Mr. Susi, but I have tried to install Ubuntu with the "use
entire disk" option in both EFI and BIOS modes.

After installing in EFI mode, grub2 produces a visible menu, but the
machine hangs when any menu entry is selected.

In BIOS mode, after installation the machine boots to either grub rescue
or just the grub> prompt.

The only solution I have found is to use the boot-rescue program to
repair the grub installation in legacy mode, which seems to install an
older kernel. It is a peculiar problem, because I can't find anyone
else suffering from it.

2017-05-06 Thread Jim Hargrove
Public bug reported:

After using Ubuntu with few problems for the last ten years or so
(currently using 16.04 LTS), three or four months ago there was a Grub2
update via the normal update channel, but this time it made my system
unbootable. (My system is a DELL XPS ONE 2710 with Intel I7 cpu
currently with BIOS A09 and 8Gig RAM and a 1.82 TiB hard drive).

For years on this machine I ran latest Ubuntu and Windows 8/7/10 via an
EFI boot. I recently deleted Windows entirely for an Ubuntu-only load,
but I can still only boot Ubuntu in BIOS mode with legacy Grub. EFI mode
fails consistently regardless of numerous boot variations. Hard drive
is formatted entirely as /dev/sda1 ext4 partition with a small
/dev/sda2/3 swap partition.

Thank you for the many years I have enjoyed using Ubuntu!!!

Thanks I think we are good to go.

FYI you should have a detect in the install for forcepae. It's the
only problem I had and I think it led to the bug.

[Bug 1569357] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 - Unity desktop session broken when using non-LightDM as X Display Manager

2017-02-03 Thread Jim Hargrove
Megathanks to Nathan Adams for post #14 on this page. My Unity desktop
had been functioning perfectly since upgrading to 16.04 nearly 10 months
ago, but it suddenly broke yesterday for no reason I can fathom. (Last
system action I had performed was to enable the system firewall - ufw.)
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Unity and LightDM, but neither
action solved the problem

Then I entered each of Nathan's 10 lines above in a terminal, and when
the last line executed, Unity sprang back to life. Thanks, Nathan!

[Bug 1620636] Re: Fails to pair with Bose QC35 headphones

2017-01-20 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Wesley: I would also add, did you know that you can place this
headphone in BT pairing mode by first switching it on and then holding
that same switch as far away from the off position as possible for a
second or two? You don't need the Bose Connect app to put it in pairing
mode then.

[Bug 1598993] Re: xrandr scaling corrupts external monitor output

2016-12-30 Thread Jim Cline
I recently reproduced the same problem without using scaling, by connecting to
a different
external monitor. Now the problem exists in every video mode. Perhaps a
problem of compatibility with Sky Lake integrated graphics in Thinkpad X260

[Bug 1620636] Re: Fails to pair with Bose QC35 headphones

2016-12-13 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Robin: yeah after a reboot or after simply turning the headphones on
and off again, pairing doesn't work. I need to use the Bose Connect app
on my phone to delete the remembered pairing, delete it from Ubuntu, and
add a new pairing from the app and pair from Ubuntu. Only then does it
work.

[Bug 1649593] [NEW] Unity Panel Service Segfaults

2016-12-13 Thread jim
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when I click on any of the icons in the Unity Panel (volume,
clock, etc.), it causes a segfault in Unity which causes Compiz to
restart (which also kills all GUI-based applications, including my
VirtualBox VMs). It seems to occur randomly, although it never seems to
happen immediately - only after the machine has been sitting a while.
Sometimes it can be after a few hours, sometimes it'll go weeks without
this happening.

I've attached an except from my syslog starting at where the error
occurs until the last line of errors (i.e. the next line is Compiz/Unity
restarting)

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: crash segfaul unity

** Attachment added: "Contents of syslog.log from when the error occurred until
Unity is restarted."
