[Bug 475864] Re: Unable to kickstart with LVM partition scheme.
I'm still seeing this on 16.04.3. The 'expert_recipe' partitioning string is being skipped / ignored. i.e., anything that looks like this: --- preseed partman-auto/expert_recipe string \ boot-root :: \ 500 500 500 ext4\ $primary{ } \ $bootable{ }\ method{ format }\ format{ } \ use_filesystem{ } \ filesystem{ ext4 } \ mountpoint{ /boot } \ . \ --- Doesn't seem to work. I was very careful, and tried a wide range of options - working on it for several hours with repeated attempts - and it always got skipped. As a result (for me), the automated partitioning stopped at the point where it would clear partitions (as seen in /var/syslog). I used an approach similar to that provided by Mick Pollard (see above), and it worked as desired. As an additional note, I used this line to automatically skip a warning about having no swap partition: preseed --owner partman-basicfilesystems partman- basicfilesystems/no_swap boolean false -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475864 Title: Unable to kickstart with LVM partition scheme. You can update to an alternate provider via: gsettings set com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url https://freegeoip.net/xml/ and verify the setting via: gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url but I have not done extensive testing to see if this breaks anything. Isak: yeah same here, that usually has to do with bluez still querying for other devices in the background and sucking up all of the channel bandwidth. [Bug 1722298] [NEW] keyboard autorepeat not happening when I hold down any key
Public bug reported: The failure to auto repeat happens in all terminal apps I've tried in Artful. If I open a virtual console, it looks like a phantom is typing ^@ about once per second. This prevents successfully typing a password, and is probably what is breaking autorepeat in the GUI terminals, although they don't show the ^@. Gnome terminal and guake also can't stay scrolled up in the buffer for more than a second before popping back down to the bottom. This problem happens in the Ubuntu desktop or Gnome and it doesn't matter if I pick the xorg or default Wayland options. It happens under both the open source and proprietary nvidia drivers. It also happens with a newly created user with no home directory baggage. xev reports a constant stream of the following about the same frequency as the ^@ in console: KeyPress event, serial 62, synthetic NO, window 0x381, root 0x1dd, subw 0x0, time 2243032, (20,-13), root:(1375,501), state 0x10, keycode 221 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False If I boot into a recovery shell, the problem does _not_ appear. My system was built with a fresh install of 17.04, installed my usual packages, then upgrade to 17.10 when the problem began. I'm certain it was not present in 17.04 for the few days before I upgraded. There were similar bugs reported a decade ago, but didn't help me. Expectation: Hold down any key in terminal window. After a moment, the letter should repeat until key is released. Actually: Key will repeat 0 or a few times, but stop repeating before I release the key. For example, if I've got a long range 5 GHz connection which returns 100% of pings but has a median latency of 100ms or so, auth hangs after send packet: type 50, never receiving the packet type 51 to complete the auth. debug2: key: /root/.ssh/id_ecdsa ((nil)) debug2: key: /root/.ssh/id_ed25519 ((nil)) debug3: send packet: type 5 debug3: receive packet: type 6 debug2: service_accept: ssh-userauth debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug3: send packet: type 50 This is where it hangs; after approximately a 30 second timeout (haven't clocked it precisely) it falls through to any remaining available authentication methods - other keys, hostbased, password, whatever hasn't been explicitly disabled. Yes, UseDNS no is on, on both client and sender. I've also disabled all non-essential PAM modules, and disabled HostBasedAuth, RSAAuth, and GSSAPI on both client and sender. The same two laptops in the same location will complete password authentication without a problem - if a pubkey is present for the user on the client side, it'll have to time that out first before it fails through and asks for the password (which will be promptly accepted and work normally); but if there is no pubkey for the client user, it'll prompt for the password and accept it immediately. If I move the server laptop closer to the router, so that the median latency falls in something more like the 50ms range, the pubkey auth works fine. I want to reiterate here that we're talking about high latency, but we're *not* talking about dropped packets - pings between the laptops when they're having problems range from 100ms-900ms latency, but with 100% returns. (And, again, password auth works fine, it's only pubkey that has the issue - and only when latency is high.) I can't find anything on the internets referring to a problem with high latency pubkey authentication on machines where pubkey auth works fine with lower latency, but here I am. Hmmm. I confirm what you see. I think this problem is arising because we have Packer run (due to LP#1693361): systemctl disable apt-daily.service systemctl disable apt-daily.timer when building the AMI. [Bug 1700746] [NEW] select() on network device loses packets at low data rates
Public bug reported: Using the Trusty GA kernel, we found that when capturing network packets with libpcap using a loop pcap_dispatch(handle, -1, dispatcher, NULL); select(fd + 1, & fd_selected, 0, 0, &timeval); where timeval = 2s, packets are missed if they arrive at low rates. I have a small test capture program (attached) which shows pings not being captured on an otherwise idle network connection. The problem does not occur on later (e.g. LTS Enablement Xenial) kernels. Thank you Mr. Susi, but I have tried to install Ubuntu with the "use entire disk" option in both EFI and BIOS modes. After installing in EFI mode, grub2 produces a visible menu, but the machine hangs when any menu entry is selected. In BIOS mode, after installation the machine boots to either grub rescue or just the grub> prompt. The only solution I have found is to use the boot-rescue program to repair the grub installation in legacy mode, which seems to install an older kernel. Public bug reported: After using Ubuntu with few problems for the last ten years or so (currently using 16.04 LTS), three or four months ago there was a Grub2 update via the normal update channel, but this time it made my system unbootable. (My system is a DELL XPS ONE 2710 with Intel I7 cpu currently with BIOS A09 and 8Gig RAM and a 1.82 TiB hard drive). For years on this machine I ran latest Ubuntu and Windows 8/7/10 via an EFI boot. I recently deleted Windows entirely for an Ubuntu-only load, but I can still only boot Ubuntu in BIOS mode with legacy Grub. EFI mode fails consistently regardless of numerous boot variations. Hard drive is formatted entirely as /dev/sda1 ext4 partition with a small /dev/sda2/3 swap partition. Thank you for the many years I have enjoyed using Ubuntu!!! [Bug 1569357] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 - Unity desktop session broken when using non-LightDM as X Display Manager
Megathanks to Nathan Adams for post #14 on this page. My Unity desktop had been functioning perfectly since upgrading to 16.04 nearly 10 months ago, but it suddenly broke yesterday for no reason I can fathom. [Bug 1649593] [NEW] Unity Panel Service Segfaults
Public bug reported: Sometimes when I click on any of the icons in the Unity Panel (volume, clock, etc.), it causes a segfault in Unity which causes Compiz to restart (which also kills all GUI-based applications, including my VirtualBox VMs). It seems to occur randomly, although it never seems to happen immediately - only after the machine has been sitting a while. Sometimes it can be after a few hours, sometimes it'll go weeks without this happening. I've attached an except from my syslog starting at where the error occurs until the last line of errors (i.e. the next line is Compiz/Unity restarting) ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: crash segfaul unity ** Attachment added: "Contents of syslog.log from when the error occurred until Unity is restarted." https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1649593/+attachment/4791152/+files/syslog_excerpt.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1649593 Title: Unity Panel Service Segfaults To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1649593/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
