I tried various xorg.conf configurations - starting with whatever came
out of the box with the 12.04 upgrade ... to no avail. If you are
proposing removal of xorg.conf altogether (does that even work?), then
that wouldn't work for me: the primary point of the docking station (in
my case) is to connect dual monitors whose configuration requires
xorg.conf twinview tweaks.

[Bug 994743] Re: After 11.10 > 12.04 upgrade on Thinkpad W520 - mouse input broken

2012-05-21 Thread Jim Hanlon
I didn't find any kernel packages in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc7-precise/, but did in (apparently newer)
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/, so I've
installed linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic-
pae_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb along with header packages. This
installation fails dkms initiated rebuild of nvidia driver. Ignoring
that (for the moment) and proceeding ... after reboot the system comes
up with working mouse in docking station (yeah!) but with severly
downgraded videa support. After several problematic attempts to update
nvidia drivers from ubuntu repos (related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers/+bug/993506) I ended up downloading latest driver (NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-295.53) from nvidia site which built and installed correctly
(but only after installing gcc-4.4 ... sigh). With this driver installed
the video support is restored, *but the mouse problem returns*.

[Bug 993506] Re: nvidia kernel module fails to build on 3.4.x kernel [fatal error: asm/system.h: No such file or directory]

2012-05-21 Thread Jim Hanlon
Ran into this this morning. Looking at latest nvidia driver code
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.53) this seems to have been dealt with in their
source. Probably in "2012-03-22 version 295.33", but I didn't actually
go dig into that.

[Bug 994743] [NEW] After 11.10 > 12.04 upgrade on Thinkpad W520 - mouse input broken

2012-05-04 Thread Jim Hanlon
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 on a Thinkpad W520 system all
mouse/pointer input devices (on this machine that includes the so-called
'TrackPoint pointing stick', a 'TouchPad', and, what I actually use, a
generic wireless USB mouse) fail to work properly if the laptop is in
it's docking station. The pointer is 'stuck' along the left edge of the
screen. The pointer can be moved vertically, but not horizontally. If
the laptop is removed from it's docking station then 'mouse' devices
appear to function normally.

In previous Ubuntu releases, I have not needed to do anything for the
docking station to work.

FWIW, my normal set up is the laptop in a docking station with two
ViewSonic VX2450wm LED monitors in a 'twinview' mode, and a wireless USB
keyboard and mouse. The laptop itself has a Nvidia Quadro 1000M graphics
device. None of the mouse devices are attached to the docking station.
