this happened during update using update manager and after reboot there
was no gnome shell. I used ctrl/alt/del to restart and used synaptic to
fix broken package and update gnome control center. Reboot again and got
this message though shell does display and seems to work.

[Bug 825970] Re: oneiric installer crashed

I rebooted after this error. Logged in and ran update manager. It
advised should do partial update and I did that. It failed. I rebooted
and ran install again. Did same process from same install source, except
I didn't format partition. This time it completed the install. Ran
update manager, did the partial update. Rebooted, reran update manager
and no updates to install. So have moved past this bug.
