[Bug 177492] Re: EXA is balls-achingly slow

2008-03-27 Thread Jimmygoon
855GM.

This is not fixed for me. The option increases the usability by a large
factor leading me to believe that it is NOT "fixed" if I still have to
enter it manually to get firefox to scroll without crawling...

[Bug 151311] Re: DDC report some ridiculous physical screen size (Mostly on Intel driver, and some ATI)

2008-03-17 Thread Jimmygoon
I hope this isn't annoying my four posts in a row... but I like to think
I'm hopefully giving helpful beneficial information.

The crashing of gnome-settings-daemon appears to be that other bug I
referenced above and after implementing the workaround I have the intel
driver working (after a whole bug of mangling with xorg.conf though)
with the right resolution and dpi.

[Bug 197153] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-17 Thread Jimmygoon
I can confirm the same on an Intel 855GM card. After implementing fixes from
this bug (where you'll see my other comments) and disabling xrandr in
gconf-editor I am able to use the intel driver, at the correct resolution and
DPI without xrandr crashing.

On the other hand, this may be a bug with the actual intel driver, it
feels slower than th i810 driver. It seems like its taking much longer
to redraw/rerender windows...

[Bug 151311] Re: DDC report some ridiculous physical screen size (Mostly on Intel driver, and some ATI)

2008-03-16 Thread Jimmygoon
Attached are the Xorg.0.logs for
1st - using the 'intel' driver with no adjustments
2nd - using the 'intel' driver plus doing the following: (this log is included
in the next post... only one attachment at a time)

* Setting DisplaySize for my Monitor
* Adding the Option "Monitor-LVDS" "Configured Monitor" to my xorg.conf

I don't know why, but those two things APPEARS to get the fonts right
(presumably with the intel driver) on my GDM screen and I'm about to check and
see if gnome-settings-daemon survives.
How can I check and make sure intel is in use and I'm not wasting my time
debugging VESA kicking in? thanks.

Yep, gnome-settings-daemon crashes upon attempt to login "The Settings
Daemon restarted too many times"
Attempting to run "gnome-settings-daemon" as superuser from the CLI gives:
http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/59867/

Finally, I'm afraid there is some sort of bug overlap. After implementing the
fixes I've described here, I tried to submit a bug report for the
gnome-settings-daemon and came across this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/197153
(Note the last comment before mine... describing how that person was suffering
this bug on an Intel 855 GM chipset (same as mine)

I hope this is making forward progress. Thanks so much!

[Bug 197153] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-03-16 Thread Jimmygoon
I'm experiencing this bug on an intel 855 based laptop but it has NOT been
fixed as of Mar 16 CST 5:27 (DST).
This is after implementing some fixes I've described on a seemingly adjacent
bug report concering the intel driver w/ Xorg.

[Bug 203001] [NEW] Attempts to kill X, restart/stop gdm, switch to tty often result in TOTAL system crash

2008-03-16 Thread Jimmygoon
Public bug reported:

Step 1. Use Hardy Alpha 6
Step 2. Try to switch to a tty, or try to kill X (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) or try to
stop/restart gdm from ssh
Step 3. Watch as your ssh connection dies, your screen turns off, and your
system crashes hard enough that the power button does nothing and neither does
ALT+SYSREQ+REISUB

I don't know what else I need to include... let me know what would be
helpful.

$ uname -r
2.6.24-12-generic

[Bug 151311] Re: DDC report some ridiculous physical screen size (Mostly on Intel driver, and some ATI)

2008-03-16 Thread Jimmygoon
Sorry, I admit I was a bit frustrated earlier and was a tad unwilling to
spend much more time with this bug, but today I'm more geared up.

I've attachment my Xorg.0.log. This is basically a result what ubuntu
sets up EXCEPT for when I specify the 'i810' driver (like I've stated
ubuntu defaults to 'intel'). My graphics card is: Intel Integrated 855GM
(Intel(r)852GM/852GME/855GM/855GME)

I think I managed to get it working by specifying DisplaySize but... it
was strange. It cause gnome-settings-daemon to crash (every single time
and starting it from CLI gave a core segfault) and so it may have been a
combination of things leading to a sluggish feel that I was attributing
to the intel driver.

So basically, my workaround stands for me of switching back to i810 (I
keep saying this in case someone else sees this with the same problem
:D)

If someone wants, I'll be around #ubuntu+1 for basically... all day
today and most of tomorrow so I can try things at will. I've got another
computer so I can get on IRC there and test stuff here and go through
different test scenarios if that would be helpful.

[Bug 202543] [NEW] Gnome-Appearance-Properties fails to Alllow Custom Compiz Settings

2008-03-15 Thread Jimmygoon
Public bug reported:

Step 1: Install simple-ccsm. Install compizconfig-settings-manager.

Step 2: Remove simple-ccsm (because its... too simple)

** gnome-appearance-properties no longer allows you to choose "custom"
settings **

Step 3: Reinstall simple-ccsm. Try to select "Custom Settings". Nothing
appears to happen. Close appearance dialog and reopen... it doesn't have
Custom selected...

???

Step 4: Choose "Extra" effects and then open the compizconfig-settings-
manager... for some reason despite the fact that custom may not be an
option and "Extra" is chosen... its actually allowing you to configure
everything.

I'm assuming this is mostly UB and if not... poorly thought out.

[Bug 151311] Re: DDC report some ridiculous physical screen size (Mostly on Intel driver, and some ATI)

2008-03-14 Thread Jimmygoon
To give some more information:
I got it working with the correct DisplaySize and I seemed to have gotten it to
where the dpi was correct but good god was it slow. I've never seen firefox
render anything quite so slowly or a simple picture to load. I was watching it
as it scanned from top to bottom...

So, I'm not sure what's going on now. I guess I'll wait. I've spent
about two hours trying to get something working to no avail. I'm just
reverting back to i810 for now.

[Bug 151311] Re: DDC report some ridiculous physical screen size (Mostly on Intel driver, and some ATI)

2008-03-14 Thread Jimmygoon
Despite what the comments here imply.
My intel driver is very much ignoring Option "DisplaySize" still and is making
the fonts far too large. I am completely up to date with my Hardy upgrades.

Thanks.

[Bug 107320] Re: Large font in the GDM login text field after installing xserver-xorg-video-intel which report monitor having 289x21 millimiters

2008-03-14 Thread Jimmygoon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 151311 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151311

This bug is still a problem in hardy.

Upon launching the installer the installer renders in a HUGE window, the
titlebar looks wrong and the text is huge. When I specify i810 as the driver
and restart Xorg then it is fine.
This prevents users from being able to install successfully.

[Bug 141001] Re: Large fonts in window titles

2007-10-22 Thread Jimmygoon
I was having a somewhat similar problem in the beta and I just kind of
waited it out. The problem seemed to come and go with updates. I even
had the problem on the very first run after my new install. My
resolution was to set the font to '1' which worked for a while. Then
(maybe an update) caused it to remedy itself until I restarted again
today... and when it booted back up it was messed up again...

anyhow, here's a screenshot with the large window title bar font and the
font appearance dialog so you can see what I'm saying.

btw, this isn't large fonts compared to y'alls screenshots... they are
huge!
