[Bug 1807526] Re: Can't update UEFI firmware on Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20FY) with fwupdmgr - does not apply update after reboot

2019-01-20 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Seems this problem was reported already on GitHub
(https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/issues/822)

The solution is to update efivar to version 37. Current Ubuntu 18.10 has
efivar 34.

Would it be updated?

[Bug 1716208] Re: epiphany-search-provider crashed with SIGSEGV in wl_list_insert_list()

2017-09-28 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
The crash seems random when opening the overview mode in Gnome shell. The
entire desktop crashes and the user is logged out from session.
Uninstalling Epiphany browser for now as a workaround seems to make crash go
away.

[Bug 1001767] Re: Intel GMA in Atom n2600 backlight brightness control keys not working in HP Mini

2012-05-21 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
On Fedora 17 beta Live session. 3d acceleration works, performance is
not that great, but i can use Gnome-shell from live. The brightness
issue is still the same as described, the same message in dmesg about
the keycodes and the same non-existent /sys/class/backlight/* entries.
Can't use the system settings brightness control either. So the problem
is still the same but the 3d acceleration works for the Intel GMA.

Just to complete the answer:
$ uname -r

[Bug 738789] Re: Ubuntu won't finish boot after nVidia proprietary driver install

2011-11-08 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Oh. I totally forgot this issue. In fact this is part of a major issue:
No support in any way for Hybrid-graphics under GNU/Linux. You can close
this issue, but don't mark it as "solved" as it isn't. I switched
distros (to ArchLinux) about 5~6 months ago.

I'm sorry for the delay. But the best thing to do is to provide the best
effort to get Hybrid-graphics cards supported. They are a reality and in
fact all laptops now have this tech/crap on them, so there is no escape
from user frustration in that matter.

If I can help in any way, please let me know.

[Bug 38442] Re: Ubiquity dialogues too large for 800x600 display

2011-09-17 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
This bug appears again in Oneiric live sessions (today build 17-Sep-2011
08:40).

Test case: Virtual Box with a resolution of 800x600 (running ISO Test
ufo-001).

The problem is that all control buttons below are not accessible. This
is a major issue in netbooks where the resolution by default is x600
and becomes an annoyance if Oneiric is to be installed on a netbook.

Noticed that this happens on the two first dialogs: "Welcome" (where you
select the language) and the "Preparing to install Ubuntu" one. Then the
window is resized to a sane size and can continue normally. Then when
you select the partitions, happens again (and keeps through the next
screens), making impossible to open the command line feedback without
getting off the screen (aside of Bug #830946). When it reaches the
Slidshow, again it is resized to a smaller size but can't open the
command-line feedback without the last bottom pixels going off the
screen (so we can't tell what is below, maybe a hidden countdown to a
'rm -rf /*' :P)

This could be solved by integrating the ubiquity window frame to the
unity panel.

"Install Ubuntu 11.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10" or
"Install Ubuntu Oneiric alongside Ubuntu Oneiric".

Anyhow, the title should probably refer to "oneiric" as "Oneiric" and/or
  11.10.

2011-08-30 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Well now the console appears but is too small to show messages. Of
course you can scroll it to view them but is not really helpful, isn't
it? It should be at least 2+ lines larger or the newline attached to
every echo will cover the message.

Thanks for replying to this "insignificant" bug anyway (:

[Bug 807636] [NEW] [Oneiric Alpha] ubiquity doesn't show console when clicking in detailed view

2011-07-08 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Steps followed (following test case
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/DesktopManual and others):
 - Boot the liveCD and click on Install Ubuntu.
 - Walk trough the configuration and start installation
 - Click on the small triangle to show details.

What i'd expect: The window expand and show the console feedback of
ubiquity.

What happened: The window did not expand so the console is not visible.
The "Skip" button appeared next to the short description of what's
happening.

Also there is another minor feedback issue: If you go forward in the
timezone selection and the go back to the timezone selection, the short
description stuck at "Getting time from time server...". It eventually
unlocks, can't tell if it is really stuck at that action or just the
feedback stucks because of the above issue.

[Bug 804985] [NEW] U3 Flash drive hangs Ubuntu when right-click on desktop icon

2011-07-02 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

I think the problem is related to how the drive is recognized. In Ubuntu Natty,
nautilus recognizes U3 drives as "software" and freezes all system trying to
open it. I suggest that the U3 software is not recognized and just is treated
as a single USB Flash as it makes the whole system unusable.
I follow this steps:
 - Insert an U3 Usb flash drive.
 - try o unmount/extract it
 - Ubuntu freezes/slows badly until I remove the drive (just deataching it from
the netbook usb port)

Also Ubuntu freezes in this scenarios:
1) - Insert an U3 Usb flash drive.
  - right-click on desktop icon.
2) - Insert an U3 Usb flash drive.
  - Open Places > Computer. Double click on the U3 Drive.
3) - Insert an U3 Usb flash drive.
  - Double click on the U3 Drive icon on desktop.

The drive is unusable under Ubuntu even as a standard flash drive, if
you try to do anything from the desktop icon (right-click, double-click)
then will freeze nautilus, the gvfs daemon and notification modules got
100 cpu usage until the device is removed by deataching it from the usb
port.

Under Arch with GNOME 3 this does not happen. The device is just
recognized as a normal usb flash drive and U3 "system" is ignored
completely. Did not test it in other Ubuntu versions.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 753857] Re: [Natty-Beta1] Wireless LED does not turn on or blinks on a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop

2011-06-11 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Well it seems to be an issue with the kernel driver.
Using the kernel module brcm80211 (now named brcmsmac) arises this issue. The
embedded led does not give any feedback about the driver/hardware state.
Some kind of feedback is required to know if the card is on/off or if it is
receiving data, specially when working with no desktop environment feedback
about it.
But if I use the 'wl' kernel module, the led stays on when the adapter is on
and off when the adapter is off. That's the kind of things is expected form the
hardware led.

I know is just a light above the keyboard and I didn't see any changes
in hardware functionality so far. But I think it's important to bring
some state-aware feedback to the user about it's own hardware.

I'm reopening this issue as it's not "fixed" by the default kernel.

[Bug 774308] [NEW] Unicode characters made of two keystrokes need support in Unity launcher

2011-04-30 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Characters like 'á', 'é', 'í', 'ó', 'ú' are not supported by the unity
launcher (can't type them, is a combination of two keystrokes) and makes
it annoying to use, cos the matching results in the applications
suggestions are matched directly.

My keyboard configuration is fine and those particular characters are
typed in two keystrokes: the accent character (') followed by 'a', 'e',
'i', 'o', 'u'. All characters that are tow keystrokes are entered in the
launcher as 'i instead of í. And happens in all accent types.

For example: I'm trying to enter the "Software Sources " application
translated as "Orígenes de Software" in my language (Spanish). So I type
in the launcher: "Or'igenes" when I meant to type "Orígenes"

[Bug 771884] [NEW] Rhythmbox Audio conversion from CD can only be played correctly on Rythmbox

2011-04-27 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

I've converted some audio from a CD I own to OGG format. Then I've
transfered this audio files to a player (Palm TX with pTunes V5). The
thing is that these audio files can only be correctly played on
Rhythmbox. In any other player like WM, WM Classic, pTunes, sometimes in
Totem; the audio got cut in some parts, got passed to the next song
(like it is empty) or even get an error message (Invalid format in WM).

I' certain it is the way that Rhythmbox converts CD tracks to OGG, I
don't have this problem when I convert the same audio with Asunder for
example. Discarded the possibility of a corrupted SD card cos reading it
form the SD Rhythmbox is able to play it but other players just don't
(or plays some cut parts).

I'm not sure if I can (due to copyright) upload two samples of the same
track converted by different software. Please let me know about this
issue.

TIA

The player stores music directly in its root directory (you may create
folders for sorting music, the player recognizes them and can play a
single folder via "Folder" menu item) so is managed almost like a USB

player): "SETTINGS.DAT" and "WMPInfo.xml". Also it stores .wav files in
a VOICE folder for recorded voice.

It's capabilities:
Playback: wav, wma, mp3 are suppported. ogg is not supported. Output via a
standard earphone plug. Not tested other formats.
Record: it has a microphone to record voice, it stores the data under the
"/VOICE" folder in wav format.

[Bug 766490] Re: [Natty-Beta2] Turning off laptop monitor turn off both monitors (laptop and external) on Vostro 3500

2011-04-19 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Following instructions for testing external monitor on a laptop in
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/GFX/ExternalPrimary
the resolutions of the external monitor are not detected properly. When I try
to change them, also the Laptop Screen flickers and changes sizes (with "same
image" option disabled, of course).
Worse is when I try to set the external monitor to be primary (by turning off
the laptop screen), both screens turn off.
  My steps:
  # Plugged external monitor
  # Go to Monitor in the Unity launcher.
  # Both screens are detected.
  # Tried different resolutions and more or less some of them worked (there
where some resolutions external monitor isn't capable of).
  # Selected Laptop monitor and switched off, click apply.
  # Both monitors turned off and had to wait for the 30 second dialog to
restore the last configuration. I was hoping the laptop screen to turn off and
the external monitor be the primary.

Then tried the switch screen har-button in this laptop (Fn + F8) but it
triggers a "super" key instead (like the win logo).
- Afterwards Compiz crashed and i'll report it in a different bug.
+ Afterwards Compiz crashed (Bug #766496).

Re: [Bug 762018] Re: nautilus does not open on inserting usb key

2011-04-18 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
I meant, the USB drive you inserted. Was it the one where you created
the iso image for installing Natty? I've done that (on installed Natty
Beta2) and the nautilus doesn't pop up a window. In Maverick happens the
same. If you insert a bootable media then nautilus won't pop up a
window.
Try to use a different USB flash drive or format that one and put a
bunch of files in it. It should pop up a window then.

Hope this is helpful

I can confirm this. If you unmount the card by just clicking "unmount"
it can be remounted by just inserting it. If you click on "safely
extract drive" it can't be remounted until next reboot.

Public bug reported:

Following instructions in

When I press the "Stop" key in my keyboard the music play stops but doesn't
rewind to the start of the track, so it works as "Pause". Stop key should
rewind to the start of track and pause audio/video playback.
Both Banshee and Totem got their "stop" button removed from their graphic
consoles but in banshee the "Stop" key on keyboard works exactly as expected.

[Bug 762018] Re: nautilus does not open on inserting usb key

2011-04-17 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Carla, have you tested this with the Natty Live USB disk? If so, Ubuntu
won't open a nautilus window automatically. It opens a nautilus window
when you insert a regular data USB drive. I think this is made on
purpose so you won't mess around with a bootable drive.

I did this:
 # Testing the same case as Carla, inserted the USB drive from were I've
installed Natty-Beta2. The drive is mounted, the icon of a USB Flash drive
appears on desktop but no nautilus window poped-up. I can open it by double
clicking on the desktop icon.
 # Unmounted Natty LiveUSB.
 # Inserted another USB Flash drive. This containing regular data (non-bootable
drive). It was mounted, USB Flash drive icon appeared in desktop, nautilus
popped up a window showing drive's content.
 # Unmounted flash drive.

I've tried this in several ways: inserted on different USB ports both
separately, inserted both flash drives simultaneusly and always the same
result: only the non-bootable drive pops up a window.

[Bug 764141] [NEW] [Natty-Beta2] Ubuntu doesn't recognize USB Music player, mounts it as a disk and treats it like one.

2011-04-17 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Following steps in test case ID hiu-002 in
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/ExpansionPorts/USB
My mp3 player is not recognized as it is, a dialog should open suggesting to
open it with Banshee. Instead an icon of a USB flash drive is showed in the
desktop and nautilus opens a window showing the drives contents.

Specs of my mp3: TrekStor, i.Beat rock, 1GB.
Software version of the music player: 2.521.200

In Maverick (kernel 2.6.35-28) it isn't recognized as a music player
either.

[Bug 748633] Re: mencoder freezes cpu scaling at "OnDemand" in minimum frequency

2011-04-16 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Gone through these steps to reproduce this issue:
# Put all my CPUs in "Performance" setting in CPU Frequency Monitor applet.
# Open a new Video DVD project in DeVeDe.
# Add about 10 titles each with an rmbv formatted video in it.
# Enable Multi-thread option and start encoding.
# About the 4th or 5th video the CPUs gone to the minimum frequency and can't
change them, although the setting is still in "Performance".

If there is a way to get the info from the kernel module controlling the CPU
please let me know how.
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 753857] Re: [Natty-Beta1] Wireless LED does not turn on or blinks on a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop

2011-04-16 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
** Description changed:

Noticed in Natty-Beta1 that the LED light of my wireless adapter doesn't turn
on. Is not dead since it works in Maverick with proprietary drivers (Broadcom
STA).
In Natty, don't even blinks. Installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers and
nothing changed.
- Wireless connection works out-of-the-box in natty but this issue seems
related with Hibernation problems (reported in bug #753813) but i'm not sure.

[Bug 762975] [NEW] [Natty-Beta2] Wireless hot-switch off causes ssytem freeze on Dell Vostro 3500 Laptop

2011-04-16 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Switching off the wireless adapter from the hard switch causes a system freeze.
Couldn't recover it since keyboard and mouse weren't responding.
My steps to reproduce this:
 # Turned on machine, login.
 # Connected wireless, bluetooth on.
 # Noticed wireless LED indicator was off (Bug #753857), but desktop indicator
was on and connected successfully to my home network. Internet working (it is
now, as I'm reporting from Natty).
 # Switched off wireless adapter from the hard-switch provided in my laptop.
Bluetooth LED turned off immediately, so did desktop indicator. Wireless
desktop indicator was still on.
 # After a second, system was frozen. Got to turn off from Power button.

Tried the same steps after installing proprietary driver and the same
issue was present (Bug #753857 too).

I consider this a regression, since it works fine on Maverick with
kernel 2.6.35-28 with Broadcom proprietary driver installed.

[Bug 760045] [NEW] [Natty-20110413]ubiquity window glitch, scrollbars should not appear (see image)

2011-04-13 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Installing Ubuntu Natty from a live session following the test steps in
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/DesktopManual just got this issue on the
ubiquity window. This two scroll bars shouldn't appear, the window isn't
resizable so we can't get rid of them "manually".
I'm attaching a print-screen on ubiquity from today's build on Natty. Previous
builds didn't had this issue.

[Bug 748633] Re: mencoder freezes cpu scaling at "OnDemand" in minimum frequency

2011-04-10 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Couldn't isolate the circumstances under this bug appear. Already made 5
DVD's with DeVeDe and showed up the first time (this im reporting) and
once more in the 4th. Any clues on how i can isolate this bug? I'm
marking as Incomplete. If no answer in 60 days i think is not a real
issue.

[Bug 671659] Re: Nvidia Accelerated Graphics Driver does not work in Asus N61J laptop with Hybrid Graphics Drivers

2011-04-09 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
I've reported my case with similar hardware than you. This is a major
issue since Optimus technology is still not supported and almost every
new laptop with nVidia graphic cards have this tech with no means of
bypassing them.

My report:
Bug #738789

I don't see this fised in the near future, but my findings are that
nouveau experimental driver has some gained ground on 3d.

This is a regression, in Maverick, Hibernation works fine, with some
messages from nouveau driver, but wakes up normally.

[Bug 753857] [NEW] [Natty-Beta1] Wireless LED does not turn on or blinks on a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop

2011-04-07 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Noticed in Natty-Beta1 that the LED light of my wireless adapter doesn't turn
on. Is not dead since it works in Maverick with proprietary drivers (Broadcom
STA).
In Natty, don't even blinks. Installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers and
nothing changed.
Wireless connection works out-of-the-box in natty but this issue seems related
with Hibernation problems (reported in bug #753813) but i'm not sure.

[Bug 753813] [NEW] [Natty-Beta1] Failed to wake up from Hibernate on a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop

2011-04-07 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Testing Dell Vostro 3500 laptop
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/System/SuspendResume

The first test went fine. The second locked up when woke up, freezing at
password prompt.
Hibernate did not come back.
After selecting "Hibernate" from the applet menu, computer goes to sleep. Wait
about 30 seconds and turned it on. On grub menu selected this partition where
i've installed Natty-Beta1. Got a blinking underscore in the top-left corner of
screen, HDD led blinked a little and then turned off. Also the NumLock and
Bluetooth led's (which turn off at start-up by default) turned off.
Got to power off the laptop manually, then it came back on a normal session.

I'm not sure it this is a regression since i didn't test it on Maverick. I'll
try to test it and will comment on this bug.
Any additional data please tell me which is the package I should target to
apport. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 753641] [NEW] [Natty-Beta1] Disable touchpad key funtion does not work on a Dell Vostro 3500

2011-04-07 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

Performing test for keyboard hotkeys i've noticed the disable-touchpad
key on the Dell Vostro 3500 keyboard (Fn + F6) does not work, I was
expecting the touchpad will turn off with this key combo but it does
not. Then tested in another partition, where I got Maverick installed,
and had the same issue. It does not turn off the touchpad even when a
USB mouse is pluged in.

[Bug 748633] [NEW] mencoder freezes cpu scaling at "OnDemand" in minimum frequency

2011-04-02 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

While converting some videos in rmbv format with DeVeDe and winff the
frequency scaling on the cpu got stuck on the setting "OnDemand" in the
lowest frequency, but does not respond to high loads and can't override
the setting to "Performance" or any other choice.

This problem persist until next cold boot but makes impossible to use
full CPU frequency on video encoding/decoding.

Tried to inhibit automatic idle state and the same thing happened. Hope
this report is usefull. TIA

Ok, news. Today's build failed. But something changed.

Following instructions on Installation test case:
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/X/ProprietaryDrivers#Installation

# Falied at step 7. xorg.conf didn't list the proprietary driver but no
problem.
# I rebooted and got into GUI (the nvidia module was not loaded).
# I ran nvidia-xconfig to generate the xorg.conf.
# Rebooted and got the same result as previous test, won't boot into GUI or
CLIA.
# Switched to console (ctrl+alt+F1) and got the apport info on both
nvidia-current and xorg packages. Also I'm attaching both xorg.conf's before
and after nvidia-xconfig

[Bug 738789] [NEW] Ubuntu won't finish boot after nVidia proprietary driver install

2011-03-20 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Followed these steps:
1. Fresh install of a daily build of Natty just updated (20/3/2011 1:30 pm
GMT-3)
2. Log in on Unity with no error from Xorg (GSettings crashed and reported bug
successfully).
3. Followed instructions on Installation test for nVidia Proprietary Drivers
Xorg Team
(http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/X/ProprietaryDrivers#Installation)
4. When in the step of rebooting, loaded the kernel 2.6.38-7-generic in grub
and wait.
5. Ubuntu never got into GUI, not even into the command line as it used to. The
last version I tested this (and dumped in the CLI) was Maverick on kernel
2.6.35-28-generic on this machine.

It happens every time I want to install the driver.

Expected result:
GUI or CLI login prompt

Result:
Hang up shell with blinking underscore responsive only to return key to
new-line and ctr+alt+del to reboot.

I'll attach logs from kernel, xorg and xorg.conf if apport doesn't do
it.

[Bug 569601] Re: unknown conduit in configure

2011-03-05 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
I've tested it and here are my impressions.

I've managed to change the name with non-ASCII characters but it requires a
tweak to work: If you use the charset for the PDA as CP1252 then the character
'í'
is passed as '~A' in the handheld. So, I've changed the charset to BIG5 then
sent the info data and back to CP1252. If the
charset remains at BIG5 I'm unable to sync, and if the 'í' char is passed as
'~A' can't sync either (maybe a typo in the charset selection?).

Then there was another issue: the status window that pops up every time I sync
my palm gone away. Never showed up anymore.

I'm opening a new issue on the conduits configure (specially the EToDo conduit
that works as a copier) but unfortunately my Palm is gone for service for about
a week or so, so I'm unavailable for testing in the meantime.

The issue is "partially" solved but i have no clue on the gone status
window.

Thanks for your time Matt. I hope i can use this software on daily
basis.

(got my palm back, im filing the issues on Evolution conduits
malfunction)

It might be a regression of this bug in some nightly builds. I'm using right

[Bug 569601] Re: unknown conduit in configure

2011-02-02 Thread Joaquín Ignacio Aramendía
Hi!
Thanks for the fix. But now i got the "Initial Synchronization" dialog box and
can't synchronize the PDA data. Then it won't connect via bluethooth or cradle
cable anymore. It says that daemon is not running but it is!
What i did:
 # Installed gnome-pilot from synaptic manager
 # Followed instructions in post #27 and #44
 # Killed the gpilotd and gpilot-applet, then reloaded when prompted as in post
#65. It won't connect.
 # Rebooted my laptop and nothing.

Is there a chance package "pilot-link" is causing trouble? if it is, is
there a fix?

Some useful data (from apt-show-versions) in the attached txt.

I have the same issue in a Vostro 3500 Laptop with a nVidia Geforce 310M in

And also the power management still triggers an hibernate message (and i think
also a system hibernate routine) when it has the battery in critical state BUT
