[Bug 1875061] [NEW] usb audio recognized but still plays through other device

2020-04-25 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04

I have two different USB audio devices plugged in:
- Speakers
- ATR Microphone with headphone jack

I change the output device in settings, but the system sound always
plays out of the speakers.

In Zoom, I am able to select the Mic headphone as output and it works
there, but everything else still comes out of the speakers on the OS.

Selecting different devices does show that the volume level changes.

No matter what device I select, sound (and the sound test) comes out of
the speakers.

It doesn't seem to be a problem anymore in Ubuntu 18.04 or later.
The card was encrypted by formatting it through Ubuntu.

[Bug 1688756] [NEW] password prompts and hotkeys slow to display

2017-05-06 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

x86_64 GNU/Linux
Nvida proprietary drivers

-What happens-

Since an upgrade to 4.4.0-77-generic kernel, the following things are
very slow to register (more than 10 seconds):

- Hot keys e.g. CTRL+ALT+T (terminal) - takes a long time for the terminal
window to appear
- Thunderbird e-mail password prompt - Takes a long time to popup
- Encrypted drive password prompts and mounting

-What expected (used to happen) -
All dialogues pop up or register within a few seconds

-Notes-
Could be related to Nvidia drivers, which I had to uninstall and reinstall
after the kernel upgrade.

Hello, the problem seems to have resolved in more recent builds (r607).

But, at the time the problem persisted regardless of the website, and on
default settings:

- Auto correction OFF
- Word suggestion on

Steps to reproduce:
- Navigate to any web form (I think I was filling out a paypal form at the

[Bug 1653554] [NEW] Unread messages counter requires viewing actual message before decrementing

2017-01-02 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

Mako
Rc-proposed

Issue:
Viewing and responding to message from quick settings doesn't mark message as
read.
Furthermore, if viewing message in messaging app, you must scroll up to that
message in order to decrement the unread message counter.

This feature makes a lot of sense as is, but some people send flurries
of messages and it is often that some messages get pushed up beyond
conviences of viewing them. As a result, there is always an inread
message counter.

A few things could be considered:
- mark message(s) read if replied to from quick settings
- mark all messages read when conversation is opened in messaging app*
-* option to mark all messages as read or jump to the oldest unread message

[Bug 1469220] Re: [dialer] Dialer should allow me to block nuisance calls

2016-07-14 Thread Joe Liau
I don't think the experience of nuisance calling is understood if this
issue is marked as "low" or "wishlist".

Does that mean there is no one able to work on it, or that it is not
important?

Nuisance calls are very disruptive and abusive. The device should be
protective of the human or allow the human to protect itself, but right
now it is a direct line for abuse.

There is a concern of lack of resources in this project. I believe we
could recover some of those resources, if we weren't disturbed by
nuisances, such as phone calls and spam messaging.

[Bug 1598597] Re: Screen does not turn off automatically

2016-07-08 Thread Joe Liau
Whilst digging into the device settings, I discovered that the "screen
lock" was set to 10 minutes. I don't remember setting that.

When I set it back to 30 sec, it seemed to correct the behaviour.
Although I recall the device remaining active for longer than 10
minutes.

I consider this "bug" to be solved. However, it raises a new issue:

"screen lock" and "screen dim/blank" are very different things

I would say that the screen turning off is a batter/power issue, whereas
the screen "locking" is a privacy issue.

Currently, both things are contained in one action and listed under
"privacy". Ideally, they would be separate things under two different
areas in the settings.

[Bug 1572343] Re: Hearing damage warning not intuitive

2016-05-06 Thread Joe Liau
I agree with option (2). It would also be nice to receive a notification of
what happened:
"Volume reduced to a safe level."

But, continuing the brainstorm here

I suppose we also have the cases of the device connecting to:
a) Bluetooth speakers/headset
b) Speakers via cable

Would those act similarly? For (b) I think the device cannot tell whether there
are headphones or just an audio patch plugged in. This might be a possible
alert for option (1):
"Audio cable detected: (Headphones) (Other)" / "Are you using headphones? (YES)
(NO)"

Choosing "headphones"/"YES" would reduce the audio, while the
"other"/"NO" would not.

[Bug 1576498] [NEW] .com button too big

2016-04-28 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

When typing in the address/search bar a .com or .co.uk button appears.
This button is slightly larger than the others near the spacebar. This causes a
lot of accidental presses.
Suspect to the fact that right thumb is dominant for pressing space bar, but
still seems to be more of a mispressed key than a convenience.

Considering all of the various non .com tlds, maybe worth having the
option to remove this key from the keyboard.

[Bug 1575937] [NEW] creation of startup disk makes usb unwritable and unformattable

2016-04-27 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

1. Type something in browser address bar (dont press enter)
2. Access quick setting drop down or side launcher
3. Return to browser and see that typed characters are no longer. I.e. Have to
retype

Sometimes i am searching for something that i recevied in a

then go to quick settinga to double check, but this causes the addrsss

[Bug 1572343] [NEW] Hearing damage warning not intuitive

2016-04-19 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

When plugging in headphones the hearing damage notification pops up.
The options are "cancel" and "ok"

For me i feel like the results of pressing either option is reversed,
even though it makes some sense when read carefully.

I.e. I expected "ok" to suppress the sound. And "cancel" to allow higher
volume. I have the opposite case on the nexus 4.

The default should always be to protect the owner of the device.

Which means presenting the cenario "i will put your ears in danger, ok?“
is actually offering a harmful outcome rather than preventing it.

“I have supressed volume to protect you, ok?“ seems to make more sense
to me.

However, reversing it now would present a moral dilemma since people are
used to the way it currently acts.

[Bug 1571482] [NEW] text copy button unresponsive

2016-04-17 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

When you long press on text within the browser, you are able to select
and copy.

This function works, but there is no feedback from the "copy" button.
i.e. it doesn't highlight or flash

I think it should highlight when pressed. Or have something saying "text

I assume the same for the "select all" option, except you can see that
everything is selected after pressing.

[Bug 1571480] [NEW] location bar selection is cumbersome; no select all

2016-04-17 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

The default action when tapping the location bar is to select the entire url.
In order to append something to the url, one must tap a second time and drag
the cursor to the end.
Then when long pressing on the url, there is no "select all" option (attached
screenshot)

Something doesn't quite flow with these actions. As described above
there is really only one path to each outcome, and is quite cryptic and
cumbersome.

-I would propose the default tap action would be to put the cursor at the end
of the url.
-Double tapping would select all
-Add select all to the long press

[Bug 1562626] [NEW] notifications and quick settings on lock screen should be separated

2016-03-27 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

Locking and unlocking settings on mobile

Currently there is the option to enable/disable

When locked, allow:
- Launcher
- Notifications and quick settings

I would like to disable notifications *only*. One way this would work, is to

This may not totally be a firefox issue. It might also be related to a
version conflict. This was on an upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04.

The strange thing was that only the mozilla applications
caused/triggered the problem.

It did indeed cause a full freeze. No mouse, and no hotkeys would
respond.

  Installed: 1:31.1.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
  Candidate: 1:31.1.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/30.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140608211622

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Thunderbird
2. Go away for a while
3. Come back

Actual results:

-The OpenPGP Prompt has come up countless times.
-You can press cancel until they are all gone. Or enter your password, which
only makes the first one go away.
-Assuming that it opens a new prompt every 5 minutes (or whatever it's set to)

Expected results:

Only one prompt should be present. If already open, another prompt
should not open at each interval (default 5 min?)

[Bug 1356616] [NEW] unsuccessful password attempts for decrypting sdcard eventually opens mutiple windows when successful

2014-08-13 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release:14.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.2
  Candidate: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.3

---

I have an encrypted SD card. When mounted, I am prompted for the
password. If the password is entered correctly, then nautilus will open
a window displaying the SD card contents.

If I make a mistake typing the password then the SD is not decrypted and
no window opens. This is normal. However, when I do successfully enter
the password, nautilus opens a window for each unsuccessful attempt on
top of the correct one.

e.g. Insert SD card:
- Prompt for password: enter wrong password (1)
-Second try: enter wrong password (2)
-Third try: enter correct password (3)
-Three nautilus windows open

I would expect that only one window would open, and that each
unsuccessful attempt would reset any command to open a window.

[Bug 1298700] [NEW] chinese ibus pinyin input produces non-corresponding characters

2014-03-27 Thread Joe Liau
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)

Installed language support, ibus, and added Chinese(Pinyin) through the
Text Entry Settings.

When typing in pinyin the Chinese characters produced do not
correspond to what was typed in pinyin. Instead it looks like the
keyboard is following the bopomofo or zhuyin method.

[Bug 1260264] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-45-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-02-08 Thread Joe Liau
For me, this issue was the result of an unsupported (non-PAE) cpu.

The workaround is fake-pae: https://launchpad.net/~prof7bit/+archive
/fake-pae

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:prof7bit/fake-pae

sudo apt-get update

Now you need to manually install fake-pae because apt-get will give the
-f install error

sudo apt-get download fake-pae
sudo dpkg -i fake-pake*.deb

It should install, after which you can do:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade
