[Bug 1779793] Re: open VM tools DKMS fails to build mostly due to multiply defined preprocessor symbols [error: implicit declaration of function 'init_timer_deferrable']

2018-07-14 Thread Joe Philipps
Ah. OK. I guess I can tinker with those files so that it doesn't
attempt to build that. I'm considering upgrading to 18.04 (LTS) before
the end of the year anyway.

Thanks for your attention.

Aw, heck, probably not. All I use VirtualBox for is once in a while
tinkering with old Windows installations, like Windows XP and Windows
98. It probably doesn't need this legacy vmxnet module.

The builds went fine with 4.13.0-45-generic and less. I noticed you
were building for 4.4. This was a problem with the DKMS build for
4.15.0-24-generic. I think that's the latest installed for linux-image-
generic-hwe-16.04, where previously it was something in the 4.13 series
(aptitude shows 4.13.0.45.64).

"in the updates pocket"...wouldn't know how to try because I don't know
to what "pocket" refers. I use aptitude to update the available
packages (u), then apply any available package updates (U then g and
another g). Just saying, if open-vm-tools is offered at some time and
shows up in the updates list, I can apply its update. I'll keep
checking periodically for updates this way. Also just saying I think
this build only failed for the latest offered kernel (4.15). I'll just
keep booting the previous kernel version until this gets fixed; it
always does eventually in my experience. Thanks for working on this.

I will concede that setting updates to automatic results in an arguably
more secure system, and maybe fix issues like this faster, but I like to
know what has been done to my system. That way when little issues like
this come up, I have a better idea of what happened right away instead
of later.

[Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root

2016-09-29 Thread Joe Philipps
The initial report of this was nearly six years ago. If this program is
so "dead," I have to wonder why here in late Sep. 2016 on an up-to-date
Raspbian system this is still the default app run when Xfce users run
the "Users and Groups" item on the System main menu. I guess it's
either not as dead as you thought, or many distribution maintainers
including the Raspbian folks should be using something else (and what, I
do not know).

[Bug 1617075] [NEW] inxi does not display all partition data

2016-08-25 Thread Joe Philipps
Public bug reported:

I have the following output of inxi -c 0 -F

Partition: ID-1: / size: 3.4G used: 510M (16%) fs: ext3 dev: /dev/sda4
   ID-2: /usr size: 20G used: 13G (70%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/dm-1
   ID-3: /boot size: 477M used: 39M (9%) fs: ext3 dev: /dev/sda3
   ID-4: /home size: 50G used: 35G (74%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/dm-2
   ID-5: /var size: 23G used: 15G (68%) fs: ext3 dev: /dev/dm-4
   ID-6: swap-1 size: 5.00GB used: 0.00GB (0%) fs: swap dev: /dev/sda5

This misses /var/tmp (dm-0) and /var/log (sda8). I'm guessing all
you're doing is the first level (e.g. /home, /boot, etc.).

Also a minor cosmetic gripe: BIOS is an acronym, so not sure why it's
"Bios" in the output. I would also argue it would be more apropos to
label it something like "platform firmware" or the like due to there
being both BIOS and UEFI (which is often mis-called "BIOS," but it's not
really).

[Bug 1589024] Re: Warning on viewing a changelog

2016-08-18 Thread Joe Philipps
This also happens for non-superuser users too, emitting a different
warning but permissions related as well. It's also mentioned in the
Debian bug report. I have gotten the following:

W: chmod 0700 of directory /var/lib/apt/lists/partial failed -
SetupAPTPartialDirectory (1: Operation not permitted)
W: chmod 0700 of directory /var/cache/apt/archives/partial failed -

Just mentioning it here for completeness to make it easier to find.

[Bug 1582421] Re: removing upstart breaks user login

2016-08-11 Thread Joe Philipps
I was surprised to find it running after booting my system. Apparently
it's still used for Xorg session management, like "/sbin/upstart --user"
in the ps(1) listing. My guess is that lightdm or something else that
initiates your X session either by default, or is configured to, run
/sbin/upstart in user mode to handle launching everything in one's
session (the panel, the window manager, etc.).

[Bug 1609940] [NEW] aptitude 0.7.4-2ubuntu2 outputs permission warning when asked to display a changelog ("C")

2016-08-04 Thread Joe Philipps
Public bug reported:

After selecting all available updates (key "U"), on the confirmation
screen (key "g"), after highlighting a package (up/down arrow keys) and
asking for the changelog (key "C"), the changelog is downloaded and
displayed, except a red background warning is shown that after dropping
privileges (changing to user _apt) the program encountered a Permission
denied error. Logging in on another virtual console and listing /tmp
shows that the directory aptitude is owned by root, group root,
with "rwx" for the owner and no other mode bits set. Ergo when a
process sets its UID to the one for _apt (118), no operations will be
possible inside that directory.

[Bug 821233] Re: indicator-weather crashed with AttributeError in export_location_details(): Location instance has no attribute 'location_code'

2014-01-29 Thread Joe Philipps
I concur, it's still broken on my system which says it's 12.04.4. I
even downloaded the individual packages' .deb files (pywapi and
indicator-weather) from the PPA for Precise and used gdebi-gtk to
install them. It might accept new locations after searching for them,
but now up to the point of clicking on OK for the window Weather
Indicator Preferences I see this in an Xterm

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/overrides/Gtk.py:391: Warning:

It's like, squash one bug, at least one other appears. I have Show

[Bug 1244629] Re: xfce4-weather-plugin showing 'No Data'

2013-10-28 Thread Joe Philipps
It's nice to see it's patched for the immediate problem and will
probably eventually make it into the Precise updates. What I did to see
what was happening was to use Wireshark. It was getting a 301 response
(or was that 302?). Wouldn't it be nicer if the plugin properly
followed redirects such as this? I was looking in weather-http.c, but I
wasn't too sure about the BEST place to parse the response code and the
Location: header. I also wasn't too sure of how to handle a 301, such
as changing the appearance somehow, because it could go from working, to
301, to 404, and developers wouldn't otherwise see it until it totally
breaks at the 404 stage (or in this case, at some other time if xoap is
removed from DNS).

[Bug 445952] Re: grub2: needed (undocumented) character escape for kernel parameters

2010-06-25 Thread Joe Philipps
IMHO, this isn't a GRUB2 (grub-pc) bug, it is the documented behavior of
the shell used to generate the configuration file (default grub.cfg).
So-called here-documents (used extensively in the distributed default
scripts) are documented to interpolate shell variables, consume quoting,
etc. Perhaps what is not particularly clear is that the
/etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d/* files are sourced, therefore
backslashes, quotes, and apostrophes within it must be used judiciously
(because levels of quoting will be consumed).

In the example of the memmap case, $0, the name of the program, is being
substituted. That's why using the apostrophe method of quoting works.
Similarly, it has been a long standing voodoo of sorts to know how to
escape with backslashes so that the proper number will be stripped off
at the final evaluation, and get the character one is trying to escape
(such as ). That's also why sometimes it's easier to use the
apostrophe for quoting to include spaces, dollar, and double quotes.
Consider it's also possible to use a hybrid quoting approach too, such
as:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX='nolapic memmap=64$0x2419
console='$GRUB_TERMINAL' console=tty2'

(of course, that wouldn't quite work in reality, as the console device
names for GRUB and Linux differ).

[Bug 193125] Re: halt:unable to iterate ID E devices:no such files or directory

2008-07-11 Thread Joe Philipps
I'm not quite sure how attachments work on Launchpad; I couldn't find
your attachment for your solution. nonetheless

I had the same problem, even with 8.04LTS. I can give you my best
educated guess.

I get this message just after Will now halt. Looking for that string
all over the fs, I found it in /etc/init.d/halt. Right after that, it's
attempting to execute halt (as in /sbin/halt). Doing a simple
strings(1) on /sbin/halt (actually, it's a symlink to reboot, e.g.,
/sbin/reboot), it shows /proc/ide in the middle of it. The trouble is,
ever since a certain rev. of the kernel, IDE devices are abstracted into
SCSI devices; ergo it's no wonder halt cannot iterate over the entries
in /proc/ide/., as it will no longer exist. The documentation I've read
seems to indicate -h is not really necessary as the kernel will
automatically shut down IDE (and network) devices anyway, so it's not
necessary (superfluous, redundant) for a program like halt(8) to do
this. If anything, halt(8) would have to look at something like
/proc/scsi or /proc/bus.

My fix/workaround was to edit the halt script so that it NEVER hands
-h to halt(8). Bingo, no more message. The more troubling one for me
is trying to free already freed IRQ 5. I think what's going on there
is similarly halt(8) and the kernel trying to stop all network
interfaces. I think it's a bug whereby the 3c509 driver/module tries to
shut itself down twice, and doesn't realize it's already shut itself
down. (I'm not 100% sure, but I think the card is assigned IRQ 5. too
lazy at the moment to confirm :-) .)
