added (it can prompt for details).

[Bug 306922] [NEW] Evolution "new label" dialog should pre-select an unused color

2008-12-10 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When applying a label to a message in Evolution, there's a menu option
to create a new label. Clicking this brings up a dialog that lets you
type a label name and select a color. This color selection is always a
drab shade of gray by default, meaning that the user must choose a
custom color every time.

Instead, this dialog should default to a reasonable unused color (like a
primary color) so the user doesn't need to choose one from the color
wheel every time.

Nikolai,

I'm not understanding. Eclipse (Ganymede) *already* installs updates to

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.1

2008-11-26 Thread Joel Parker
Rockwalrus' comment about not being to update plugins using the package
manager is incorrect (at least for the latest Eclipse release).

I was able to download Ganymede SR1, install it into /opt, run it as a
normal user, and update plugins (but not the core Platform). The plugins
went into my ~/.eclipse directory and were used instead of the global
ones.

This means we could package a core Platform-only version, or a version
with a core set of plugins, and the user could update everything other
than the Platform themselves, without needing root access.

[Bug 248233] Re: rt2500pci driver connects with max speed of 1Mb/s

2008-11-23 Thread Joel Parker
More details:

On Hardy (mod version 2.0.10), I can manually set the rate to 54M and it
will take effect and hold it there. When I set it back to auto, it will
decrease to 1M again (sometimes immediately, sometimes after a while).

So my temporary workaround here seems to be to set it manually to 54M
when I connect to the network. Is there a way to get this to run
automatically after NetworkManager connects?

[Bug 298778] [NEW] Rhythmbox can't read Ogg FLAC comments

2008-11-16 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a set of Ogg files that use FLAC as the codec (as opposed to
plain .flac files). Rhythmbox can play them, but it can't read the tags
for display, editing, or cataloging. A quick look at the file in a hex
editor shows that the tags are indeed in the file. They use the same
format as an Ogg Vorbis file, so it should be easy to make this work.

[Bug 80780] Re: uses unusual units to report memory and disk sizes

2008-09-15 Thread Joel Parker
Yeah, I do agree with Endolith. This is bigger than just System Monitor
and GVFS.

Ubuntu needs to decide which set of units to use, and it needs to stick
to it for all apps across the entire system.

I vote for the international standard (1000-byte kB), personally, rather
than the Microsoft/legacy standard (1024-byte kB).

Perhaps the next step should be a blueprint to this effect.

Yes, that's happened to me as well. A classmate loading a presentation

I would vote for a default "deletions from an external drive are

hidden on FAT32 drives.

[Bug 197026] [NEW] Evolution does not show events from web calendar

2008-02-29 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I set up my Google calendar in Evolution by adding an "On the Web"
calendar (webcal://). When I enable the calendar though, no events are
showing up in the Evolution window.

This is strange for two reasons:
* When I enable/disable the Google calendar in Evolution (using the checkbox),
dates on the mini-calendar change from bold to normal. But when I actually view
those dates, no events appear
* The events appear when I click the date/time on the taskbar, but not in
Evolution when I view the same date.

[Bug 99652] Re: 7zr crash when compressing

2007-11-08 Thread Joel Parker
Ok, I correct my command lines.

The form that was giving me trouble:

tar -cf - directory | 7z a -si -v5m archive.tar.7z

The form that I changed to:

tar -cf - directory | 7z a -si -tbzip2 -v5m proj.tar.7z

Of course, trying it now on a small folder didn't produce a crash in
either of them. It must be specific to the files I'm trying to archive,
or maybe the large archive file size.

When I encounter it again, I can post the crashlog (but it's big, as I
mentioned in the summary).

[Bug 99652] Re: 7zr crash when compressing

2007-11-07 Thread Joel Parker
Hi, this is was I was doing to generate a crash:

tar -cf - directory | 7z a -si > archive.tar.7z

I can get around this by doing:

tar -cf - directory | 7z a -si -m=bzip2 > archive.tar.7z

I'm using Feisty and the latest update version of p7zip in Feisty.

[Bug 141142] Re: Buffering indicator in Totem

2007-09-21 Thread Joel Parker
Look at YouTube videos. When the video begins loading, the seek bar has
a gray background. An embedded progress bar turns dark red to show
buffering progress. Finally, the area that has already been played is
bright red. This 3-color progress bar scheme could be done with Totem.

This could be done both for the plugin and when streaming video in the
full player.

[Bug 141142] Re: Buffering indicator in Totem

2007-09-20 Thread Joel Parker
No, this is something different.

First, the buffering indicator doesn't show when Totem is run as a
plugin. Also, it doesn't continue loading when the playback is paused
(like YouTube videos).

Second, when in full application mode, the buffering indicator is just
for the next piece, and doesn't continue through the video when it is
paused. YouTube videos continue loading the entire video, even when
playback is paused.

[Bug 141142] Buffering indicator in Totem

2007-09-19 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem needs a buffering indicator, especially when operating as a
plugin. This would be like YouTube's player, where you can pause the
video until you notice that it has fully loaded.

Also like YouTube, it could be a progress bar integrated into the
tracking bar.

[Bug 130282] CD/DVD Creator using incorrect file size units

2007-08-03 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

The Nautilus CD/DVD Creator function is using completely wrong file size
units in its dialogs.

I have an example file:

$ ls -lh --si
total 1.2G
-rwxr--r-- 1 joeljkp joeljkp 1.2G 2007-08-02 23:03 file.7z
$ ls -lh
total 1.1G
-rwxr--r-- 1 joeljkp joeljkp 1.1G 2007-08-02 23:03 file.7z
$

Notice that that's 1.2 gigabytes in SI form (1GB = 1000^3 bytes), and
1.1 gigabytes in non-SI form (1GB = 1024^3 bytes, equiv. to 1.1
gibibytes).

When I put this file into the CD/DVD Creator, it shows the file size as
1.1GB (obviously using the non-standard notation).

However, when I press the Write to Disc function, it states "Data Size:
1.0 GiB".

This means that this dialog is trying to use gibibytes by assuming the
file listing is using SI gigabytes. This assumption is wrong, leading to
all kinds of confusion.

Either the Write to Disc dialog should say "1.1 GB" (keeping with non-
standard notation), "1.1 GiB" (standard binary notation but not
internally consistent with the file listing), or "1.2 GB" (again,
standard notation but not internally consistent with the file listing).

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2007-08-03 Thread Joel Parker
Just for the record, Windows Vista keeps deleted files on flash drives
in a hidden folder called $Recycle.bin (or something to that effect),
and the main Recycle Bin icon on the user's desktop then shows that it
has something in it.

Windows' behavior has one other benefit: you can set maximum sizes for
these for different types of storage - for example, you could set a 2GB
maximum on the local recycle bin, but a 512MB maximum on any remote
recycle bins.

[Bug 130200] Nautilus using incorrect file size units

2007-08-03 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus is showing file sizes using incorrect units. It shows file
sizes using "GB", but is actually showing it in gibibytes. The same goes
for kilo- and mega-.

This is confusing for users, as they might wonder why Nautilus shows a
file as 4.5 GB, but won't allow them to put it on a 4.7 GB DVD.

This can be seen in the following example:

$ dd bs=100 count=1000 if=/dev/zero of=test.file
1000+0 records in
1000+0 records out
10 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 45.045 seconds, 22.2 MB/s
$ ls -l --si test.file
-rw-r--r-- 1 joeljkp joeljkp 1.0G 2007-08-03 10:37 test.file
$

When I open nautilus to this file, it shows the size as "953.7 MB", as
shown in the attached screenshot.

[Bug 128930] Allow "Delete future occurrences" in calendar

2007-07-28 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

* Delete this occurrence
* Delete all occurrences

It would be great if there was a new options:

* Delete future occurrences

This would delete the current one and all of them in the future,
effectively setting the end date for the event to the date of the

[Bug 72262] Re: Form Wizard in Base does not complete

2007-06-19 Thread Joel Parker
Here's a description of how I worked around the problem, hopefully clear
enough for everyone to use:

1. Install Sun's version of Java: package sun-java6-jre from Synaptic
(Multiverse repository)
2. In Synaptic, go to Settings->Preferences and uncheck "Consider recommended
packages as dependencies" (I don't know if this is necessary, mine's always
unchecked, and I'm afraid leaving it checked would cause many more packages to
be uninstalled in the next step).
3. In Synaptic, uninstall all openoffice.org-* packages and their dependencies
(there should only be a few non-openoffice.org ones that need to be removed).
4. Finally, in Synaptic, install alien.
5. Go to http://openoffice.org and download the latest Linux version (making
sure you uncheck the "Include the Java JRE" button below the download links).
6. Unzip the download.
7. In a terminal, go into the unzipped folder, then the RPMS folder.
8. Copy the one .deb file from the desktop-integration folder into the main
RPMS folder.
9. Delete openoffice.org-kde-integration-.rpm (or the gnome
counterpart if you use KDE)
10. Run "sudo alien --scripts *.rpm".
11. Run "sudo dpkg -i *.deb".
12. Log out and back in to get the menus to update, if necessary.

Doing all that will remove Ubuntu's version of OOo and install the
latest one from OpenOffice.org, which works fine in Feisty (I'm using it
now).

[Bug 83585] XChat uses Opera for everything

2007-02-06 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat

I use the latest xchat from Edgy. I installed Opera from the commercial
repository, and now xchat uses Opera for all of its "open link in
browser" commands. I checked Preferred Applications, and it's still set
to firefox.

[Bug 74064] Re: HP DeskJet 952C ignores color/grayscale settings

2006-12-02 Thread Joel Parker
Wonderful, thank you.

I did your tests, and they worked as intended. So I set the printout
mode option using the CUPS web interface, and the printer is now
printing grayscale as intended.

So this is definitely a gnome-cups-manager problem.
