[Bug 211966] Re: nautilus-share report a warning about missing /var/lib/samba/usershares

2016-08-01 Thread John Drinkwater
Just seen this message in syslog and I wonder why Fix Released is marked
on nautilus-share if 8 years later this is still occuring?

[Bug 1008105] Re: "The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened"

2016-02-25 Thread John Drinkwater
`apt` needs to be more robust against this kind of breakage. A 3rd party
repo today updated a file which had a broken Depends field, and that
broke update-manager from being usable, and synaptic from getting beyond
the initial loading - it refused to work.

```
john@joran ~/code/UnrealEngine ±:promoted❯ sudo apt install build-essential
mono-gmcs mono-xbuild mono-dmcs libmono-corlib4.0-cil
libmono-system-data-datasetextensions4.0-cil
[Bug 1548866] [NEW] xdg-desktop-menu creates ~/.gnome/apps/
2016-02-23 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
Discovered this while working on a DRM-free release of an unannounced
game port to Linux.
Mojosetup calls xdg-desktop-menu to populate the system menu, but this
tool does a splatter-shot approach to getting the desktop entries
installed and creates with `mkdir -p` ~/.gnome/apps/ whether the user
uses that now very old Gnome 2 location or not.
Currently $XDG_DATA_HOME/applications/ is used by most|some DEs. I have
no idea how the KDE side of this behaves.
There is a dormant upstream bug report with a patch attached here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90775
2016-02-10 Thread John Drinkwater
This bug still exists in 15.10 - if it is expected, it should not be
producing a warning in syslog, as it contributes to accidentally
glossing over actual issues that appear.
[Bug 1507764] Re: metacity crashed with signal 5 in _XEventsQueued() ; forcing gnome session to logout
2016-02-07 Thread John Drinkwater
Subbing to this bug even though the direct cause is not the same; with metacity
crashing now, my entire session is being lost!
I’ve been able to trigger it while alt-tabbing like the OP, closing windows,
and generally interacting with the window manager while a 3d game is open or
VLC has been in use has caused it.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1535906
It was occuring on 15.04 and updating to 15.10 did not resolve the
issue.
[Bug 1542649] [NEW] gimp makes ~/.thumbnails/ in spite of XDG location already existing
2016-02-06 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
john@joran ~ ❯ gimp --version
GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.8.14
When writing a file, gimp will create a directory (~/.thumbnails) to
write thumbnails into despite XDG locations being defined
(XDG_CACHE_HOME="/home/john/settings/cache"), and the location existing
and containing files already:
john@joran ~ ❯ ls $XDG_CACHE_HOME/thumbnails
fail/  large/  normal/  gnome-exe-thumbnailer.cfg  gnome-exe-thumbnailer.files
Can confirm that putting this into gimprc:
(thumbnail-size none)
disables the location being created, but then thumbnails are not generated
either
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646644 this was filed and
meant to be fixed.
[Bug 1540948] [NEW] Baobab hangs for an abnormal while while processing deep tree
2016-02-02 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
I happen to have a full archive of playstation home on my hdd (as one does),
and here is an example of the file tree:
https://gist.github.com/johndrinkwater/f1c84501430e5d35a4af
It causes baobab to take many many many minutes to process, making the
application appear hung, while it seems to be allocating more memory, but in
such small increments that is absorbing most of the time:
[Bug 1535906] [NEW] X crashes with gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11
2016-01-19 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
This has been happening on and off since the Autumn, but only a handful of
times so I haven’t been able to discover an underlying cause. It appears to
trigger when I am using an application using GL, especially games though it has
happened with just VLC, firefox and a file terminal sessions open.
Moved onto the latest nvidia driver today to verify it was still happening
there, with NVIDIA 361.18.
One thing that might coincide with the problems is Firefox moving to GTK
3…
I grabbed what appears to be the root cause in syslog,
https://gist.github.com/johndrinkwater/9188eb52dd6dae3cdba3
as everything preceeding these lines are debug spew from the game I had been
using, Awesomenauts.
[Bug 467300] Re: motd-legal files don't respect XDG_CACHE_HOME
2016-01-19 Thread John Drinkwater
Reasons to want this ‘configurable’ is to match the rest of the system, as this
is one of the few remaining binaries that writes into ~/.cache
john@joran ~ ❯ tree .cache
.cache
├── motd.legal-displayed
└── upstart
As everything else already behaves:
john@joran ~ ❯ set | grep XDG_.*_HOME
XDG_CACHE_HOME=/home/john/settings/cache
XDG_CONFIG_HOME=/home/john/settings/config
XDG_DATA_HOME=/home/john/settings/data
XDG_STATE_HOME=/home/john/settings/state
john@joran ~ ❯ tree $XDG_CONFIG_HOME | wc
   2525   11435  126830
Current solution is having this module not run instead.
[Bug 812198] Re: Can’t read signature header
2015-09-02 Thread John Drinkwater
Unlikely that I could reopen this with a log file as: I stopped using that
theme due to 12.04 and 14.04 breaking it in places, and this bug was filed in
2011 and got no action until 2015.
A similar yet unrelated issue has just been resolved for the Firefox GTK3 push,
so maybe that will help with future theming problems:
[Bug 1487765] [NEW] pngcrush not compiled with itxt support
2015-08-22 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
Current version of pngcrush shipping in 15.04 outputs this on use of
-itxt,
  Ignoring invalid option: -itxt
Man page suggests this option should exist, but is not listed in the
opts when pngcrush is run, as it appears PNG_iTXt_SUPPORTED was not
defined when built.
[Bug 1473523] [NEW] convert exports SVG ignoring -size parameter
2015-07-10 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
Ran into this bug on a new 15.04 install, asking convert to output a PNG of a
specific size from an SVG, it would always output in another fixed size.
It seems to be caused because now imagemagick is not built with rsvg support.
john@joran ~ ❯ head -n 2 steamlugcast.s03e11.elegant-diagonal-refunds.svg
?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8 standalone=no?
steamlugcast.s03e11.elegant-diagonal-refunds.png: PNG image data, 1024 x 576,
[Bug 546021] Re: Using Shift+left arrow or right arrow to select characters results in garbage on command line
2015-06-22 Thread John Drinkwater
Due to a hardware issue, I installed 15.04 on a new hard drive and noticed this
behaviour is different from my previous install as mentioned in this bug.
Previous system was Ubuntu 11.04 but updated through 12.04 and 14.04.
Upstream bug was closed as nothing changed on their end, so clearly there must
be another configuration change in Ubuntu sometime over the years that changed
this?
[Bug 737261] Re: Totem fails to play anything
2011-06-24 Thread John Drinkwater
I can't add clear steps to reproduce, but it is happening to me in
11.04.
I *am* using fglrx though, like the initial reporter.
[Bug 594405] Re: Cannot open .hta file with Firefox
2010-06-22 Thread John Drinkwater
Unlikely to happen, as .hta files include Windows-only features, so
there is little point in adding support.
[Bug 596812] [NEW] Reduce the amount of data sent in HTTP requests
2010-06-21 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: firefox
Mozilla is currently reducing, for the sakes of privacy and bandwidth, the
amount of data sent per HTTP request by trimming inessential text from the
useragent string.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572650
I notice Ubuntu’s Firefox adds ‘Ubuntu/XX.XX (codename)’ into the useragent,
and that beyond the privacy issue, there is redundant information here.
For example, Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) is sent in each request from my system.
Suggested Fixex.
1. Remove ‘(%codename%)’ by unsetting general.useragent.vendorComment
2. Consider removing the distro revision by unsetting
general.useragent.vendorSub
3. Consider removing Ubuntu altogether by unsetting general.useragent.vendor
[Bug 267243] [NEW] about: displays incorrect version
2008-09-06 Thread John Drinkwater
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: firefox
The ‘about:’ page in Firefox displays the Gecko revision (1.9.0.1)
instead of the browser version (3.0.1) under the main logo.
I tried to verify the bug is with Ubuntu rather than upstream, as a
friend using the official Firefox build on Vista does not appear to have
it.
The only difference is line 66, where ‘p id=versionabout.version;
1.9.0.1/p’ occurs
