[Bug 235930] Re: rpc.idmapd needs nfsd.ko

2009-04-19 Thread John Florian
I too am forced to restart nfs-common after booting to get ID mapping
working correctly on a server built with 8.10.

It's rather disappointing to see that this hasn't been fixed yet.

I don't mean to offend anybody, but I'm not sure what the point of
filing bug reports is when it takes over 2 years to get the first
response and then it's dismissed because it's too old. I thought Dapper

2009-01-05 Thread John Florian
Paul,

I'm no expert on this, but digging through the changelogs, it appears that this
is now a two step process. The first step is to update NSS as Jamie showed
above. The second step is to update PAM, which it looks like you can do via:
$ sudo pam-auth-update ldap

This was Dapper. I have since rebuilt the server with Intrepid roughly

However, the last I knew, my hack to the init.d script to munge the

Re: [Bug 49740] Re: Windows disappear from desktop, but continue to run

2008-09-18 Thread John Florian
As mentioned earlier, the bug was painful enough I had to resort to using
KDE instead. If there's reason to believe that it may now be resolved, I
certainly could give it a try again. However, if this is just a general
inquiry, I don't have an answer at hand or really the time to find out.
Has anything changed that might bring resolution?

As stated in an earlier post, the bug in sawfish made GNOME so unusable
I had to switch to KDE. And no, metacity was not an option for me. It
is so lacking in advanced window placement features that it reminds me
of working in Windoze. I'd be happy to test it again, but the only
xinerama setup at my disposal now is under Fedora 8 (where I'm presently
running KDE as well).

[Bug 49740] Re: Windows disappear from desktop, but continue to run

2007-11-18 Thread John Florian
My two screens were both 1600x1200. I never tried using sawfish-client
as I'm unfamiliar with its use. The problem was so prevalent for me (at
least 5 times during 8 hour work day) that I was forced to change over
to KDE. I hadn't realized until this change that kwin offers nearly all
of the features that I had grown dependent upon with sawfish. As much
as I saw this problem, I had never pinned it down to a specific cause.
Changing workspaces with the GNOME pager did seem to cause it more so
than any other event, although other events indeed also caused the
problem.

[Bug 127614] Problems handling genre when ripping

2007-07-22 Thread John Florian
Public bug reported:

When configuring the external audio encoder lame, the dialog of hints
for %t=tittle, %a=artist, etc. fails to mention that %g=genre, yet I
tested it on a hunch and it just worked. For this reason, it seems that
the hints dialog should be updated to include this and the default
command-line (for lame) should also include '--tg %g' to take advantage
of this.

I also noticed that if you rip one CD with the genre set 'blues' for
example and then rip a second CD with the genre set to '' (empty/blank),
the resulting mp3 files for the second CD will have their genre set to
the last non-blank value (blues in this example).

Anyway, I mostly write python and as I'm sure you're aware, it's rather
portable, if done right. Can you point me to a good source of info on
building debs for Ubuntu/Debian the right way. I already use svn and
can clearly see from what I've learned so far that Debian and by
extension Ubuntu too benefit from lots of automation. I hope to make
packages that work on a wide range of Ubuntu releases, yet work mostly
at the source level. I don't want to fiddle with the stuff in between
each time each change, except to set up the automation.

I've already read the Debian New Maint Guide insofar as much as was
needed to build my first few.

[Bug 49740] Re: Windows disappear from desktop, but continue to run

2007-04-12 Thread John Florian
Sadly this bug still exists in Ubuntu 7.04 beta. Sawfish is simply
unusable with Xinerama enabled -- one cannot tolerate windows being lost
simply for having changed workspaces. I sure wish this could be fixed
(or someone could offer a work around) as I have yet to find a window
manager that has a window placement policy as ideal as sawfish's first-
fit method. kwin comes close, but I really prefer a GNOME desktop.

[Bug 105265] GNOME Save As dialog continuously resizes itself

2007-04-10 Thread John Florian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

Using a fully updated 7.04 beta, if I cause a GNOME (maybe GTK) Save As
dialog to open, the resultant Save As dialog window that opens seems to
continuously resize itself. The window is anchored at the same position
the entire time, but the right edge goes back and forth between two
positions endlessly. These two positions are about 10 pixels apart and
the height remains constant.

If I manage to resize the window (hard) or reposition it (easy), the
cycling stops and the window behaves normally. If the Save As window is
closed and a new one is opened, the process starts all over. I have
seen the behavior on several different feisty beta installs so I don't
believe this is an isolated case. I can consistently reproduce this
with firefox, thunderbird, and gvim. I suspect any app using some
common library is affected. I'm not sure if this is GTK or GNOME. For
example, OOo Writer seems to use a different library as the dialog looks
different and is unaffected.

[Bug 49740] Re: Windows disappear from desktop, but continue to run

2006-10-30 Thread John Florian
The above report was under Dapper. The problem still exists in Edgy and
in fact seems worse. The gnome-panel still seems to be affected the
most often, however the old work around of killing gnome-panel (so that
it could restart and be visible) tends to make nearly all other windows
disappear. Like before, the windows that disappear still have their
process running, but there is no way to make the window visible.
Affected windows disappear from the desktop and the window list applet.
In short, sawfish is almost completely unusable with Edgy using
Xinerama.

[Bug 68108] saslauthd forces directory permissions that prevent postfix access

2006-10-24 Thread John Florian
Public bug reported:

When saslauthd is started, it will forcefully reset the permissions of
the directory that contains the socket to which postfix must open:

Starting SASL Authentication Daemon: mode of `/var/run/saslauthd'
changed to 0710 (rwx--x---)

Given that the ownership of this directory belongs to the root user and
the sasl group, there is no reasonable way for postfix to access this.

Adding postfix to the sasl group will not help, unless I chmod this
directory to 0750. However, this only represents a temporary fix
because as soon as saslauthd is restarted, the directory will be forced
back to 0710.

IMHO, the permissions should always be 0750 so that any daemon that
wants SASL can simply be made a member of the sasl group.

[Bug 47329] Re: Can't use the To button in Compose Message to look up contacts

2006-10-21 Thread John Florian
What is eds and how do I run it to help with the upstream request?

I don't see such an executable.

[Bug 46856] Re: Panel items no longer available message won't away

2006-09-30 Thread John Florian
Issue is gone. Don't recall exactly what I did to make it go away, but
I believe it involved mv'ing the old home directory aside and then
selectively pulling things back into a fresh one.

[Bug 47602] Re: gnome panels are empty (show nothing) after login

2006-09-23 Thread John Florian
Unfortunately, I can no longer provide feedback on this bug. As
mentioned on 2006-08-16, I permanently made the problem go away as the
problem was getting too annoying, especially when I had solution waiting
in the wings (see 2006-08-10).

[Bug 47602] Re: gnome panels are empty (show nothing) after login

2006-08-11 Thread John Florian
What is gnome-panel racing against?

For the record, doing:

  killall gnome-panel

*always* brings back gnome-panel for me. I've done this 100's of times.

[Bug 47602] Re: gnome panels are empty (show nothing) after login

2006-08-10 Thread John Florian
I just made a significant discovery on this bug. If I add a new panel
and populate it, this new panel works correctly! The old panels still
fail as reported and can still be revived via the killall.

Now I have a predicament. I assume that I can make this problem go away
for me by just making new panels to completely mimic my old ones and
destroying the old ones. Will that harm the proper resolution of this
bug? I can hold for a while if needed -- I've been living with this for
several months now, but it sure would be nice to say bye bye bug.

[Bug 47602] Re: gnome panels are empty (show nothing) after login

2006-07-30 Thread John Florian
Positive I did not simply remove menubar applet. Both the top and
bottom panels are empty, void, devoid of all life and 100% non-
responsive -- just a gray pair of gray bars, until I right-click desktop
to open a gnome-terminal (via nautilus-open-terminal) and exec killall
gnome-panel. It seems that gnome-panel initializes correctly on all
but the first time within my gnome session. Of course, the first time
is the most important as the 2nd ... nth times should never be needed.
Make sense?

[Bug 50485] Re: New tabs do not run command as a login shell

2006-07-10 Thread John Florian
Problem solved and not a bug with gnome-terminal. My ~/.bash_profile
had:

[ -r .bashrc ] source .bashrc

But, if I've moved out of my $HOME in the first tab, the above would
fail to source .bashrc. I resolved the issue by changing to:

[ -r ~/.bashrc ] source ~/.bashrc

[Bug 50485] Re: New tabs do not run command as a login shell

2006-07-06 Thread John Florian
Daniel, no the problem hasn't been solved. It is intermittent, so I
know how it's supposed to behave, but that is not always the case.
Also, it may be that it's my .bash_profile that's not being sourced,
since it is that file which sources my .bashrc. If I can get the
problem to repeat, I'll post more details.

[Bug 50485] New tabs do not run command as a login shell

2006-06-20 Thread John Florian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In the gnome-terminal preferences, there is an option to Run command as
a login shell. This option only affects the first tab.

To reproduce, define an alias (for example) in the user's .bashrc
script. This alias will only be defined and available in the first
(original) tab.

[Bug 49740] Windows disappear from desktop, but continue to run

2006-06-14 Thread John Florian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sawfish

Regularly throughout the day, I experience windows disappearing from the
desktop. The problem seems to only occur when I'm opening a new window
or changing workspaces. It seems that Xinerama is also necessary for
this bug to manifest.

Most often it is the gnome-panel that gets affected. I actually have 3
gnome-panels normally, and it always seems to be the same one of the
three that is affected.

Note that although the affected applications disappear from the desktop
and gnome window selector, the applications continue to run (i.e., they
are visible via 'ps').
