[Bug 1296030] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 Fresh Install on Laptop: no Network Connectivity - bcmwl WLAN Driver not Installed

2014-03-22 Thread John Kim
** Tags added: saucy

** Tags added: hw-specific

** Description changed:

  Release:Ubuntu 13.10
Installation Media:Desktop CD image from a USB stick with
pendrivelinux
  Hardware:Dell Inspiron 3721 with a Broadcom BCM43142A0 WLAN device.

- I would have expected that the live system and the installed system both
- have automatic network connectivity via WLAN.
+ [EXPECTED]
+ I would have expected that the live system and the installed system both have
automatic network connectivity via WLAN.

- What happened instead:

+ [ACTUAL]
1st problem: The live system didn't have WLAN network connectivity.

I was able to activate it simply by installing "bcmwl-kernel-source"
(after a lot of try and error):

- sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
+  sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

(2nd problem: This is rather counter-intuitive. Why do I have to install
sources when I need a driver binary?)

3rd problem: When I booted into the installed system, network was down
  again.

Here the fix was more complicated, surely too complicated for a non-
  technical person:

- This is what I did:

- sudo dpkg -i
- /media/hok/UUI/pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.2.0.3-1.1ubuntu4_all.deb
+ [MY APPROACH]
+  sudo dpkg -i /media/hok/UUI/pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.2.0.3-1.1ubuntu4_all.deb

- sudo dpkg -i /media/hok/UUI/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-
+  sudo dpkg -i /media/hok/UUI/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-
  source_6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

- Proposed solution:

- These problems would be solved if the Ubuntu installer installed the
- driver by default, or after detecting an appropriate device.

[Bug 1228086] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit can't boot in Virtual PC

2014-03-18 Thread John Kim
Hello CSRedhat, instead of using Virtual PC, you may want to consider
using Virtualbox instead. The software is not only far more reliable,
but it can also boot and install x64 images.

[Bug 1292870] Re: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug

2014-03-16 Thread John Kim
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can
start working on this bug.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary
information:

apport-collect BUGNUMBER
if you are using Karmic Koala (9.10) or newer, or

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` BUGNUMBER
if you are using Hardy Heron (8.04)

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib
package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-
launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report.

If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the
following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or
tar/zip-ed).

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in
advance!

to read "How to report bugs effectively"

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the

[Bug 1249380] Re: Wine has make Problems: Bluesceen

2014-03-10 Thread John Kim
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
