[Bug 1942649] Re: Paring of smartphone as card reader not successful

@hda22: If that's true, someone has to ping the Ubuntu maintainers to
import the latest version of the package from Debian. I don't have any
control over the Ubuntu packages, unfortunately.

Hello!

used by Fedora, openSUSE and other distributions.

Someone from Ubuntu would need to import the latest sources from Debian
to update the package.

Thanks,

[Bug 1868594] Re: missing dependencies

2020-03-23 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
I have already fixed this in Debian, see Debian bug #951732, although
I'm not aware that "qtdeclarative5-models-plugin" needs to be explicitly
installed.

In any case, I don't have any influence on packages in Ubuntu, so one of
the Canonical folks need to do that.

You need to power-cycle your laptop between Windows<->Linux reboots,
that is, turn the laptop off. This is necessary to reset the soundcard.

I'm dual-booting Linux and Windows with my kernel still defaulting to
HDA mode while Windows defaults to I2S mode. In order to get sound in
Linux again after booting into Windows, I need to power off the laptop
from Windows. Then power on, boot into Linux and then reboot or even
power-cycle again.

The same applies for Windows. If you don't have sound, power-cycle the
machine at least once. Reinstalling the drivers does not help as it's
not a driver issue, it's the hardware not properly resetting after
entering either HDA or I2S mode.

The only proper fix is to use I2S mode on Linux as well which requires
at least Linux kernel 4.8, see [1].

[Bug 1570055] Re: FTBFS on powerpc

2016-10-13 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Ok, the issue with firebird3.0 in Debian has been resolved, see [1].
And, this isn't actually a toolchain or glibc regression, the behavior
is by design, see [2].

To cut a long story short, when using version scripts, an application
**must** always export the _IO_stdin_used symbol as it is used by glibc
to determine the libio ABI.

[Bug 1254824] Re: qemu-sh4-static: segmentation fault during debootstrap second stage on amd64 but not i386

2015-11-22 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
I have applied the patch and I can verify that qemu-sh4 now works
properly on an amd64 host.

Unless there is anything else that needs to be considered, please apply
the patch. Having it merged means improving sh4 support in Debian as we
can use qemu-sh4 to set up virtual buildds for this architecture.

Thanks,

[Bug 1254786] Re: qemu-m68k-static: illegal instruction ebc0 during debootstrap second stage

2015-11-19 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Alright, I have created a page on the Debian Wiki which explains how to
properly set up a chroot environment for sbuild/m68k on Debian [1].

With this set up, I was able to increase compile performance
dramatically as compared to native m68k hardware or the Aranym Atari
m68k emulator.

Enjoy!

[Bug 1254786] Re: qemu-m68k-static: illegal instruction ebc0 during debootstrap second stage

2015-11-19 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Ken,

this is known to currently *not* work. As Andreas has already indirectly
explained, qemu does not provide full m68k emulation.

Instead, it supports the reduced m68k instruction set of Motorola's ColdFire
CPU only.
If you need a QEMU version with full m68k support, please have a look at
Laurent Vivier's github repository [1].

You also shouldn't file bugs which are clearly upstream-related to the
Ubuntu bugtracker. Ubuntu doesn't even support m68k but Debian does.
Still, we also can't do anything about such bugs in Debian, these belong
upstream.

[Bug 1254829] Re: Second stage fails on first run, completes on second - qemu-sh4 Debian Sid guest

2015-11-18 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Hi Ken!

This is not a bug in debootstrap but just an issue with the sh4
repository on ftp.debian-ports.org.

Also, Ubuntu Launchpad is the wrong place to file this bug report as
Ubuntu doesn't support architectures from Debian Ports at all. Such bug
reports belong to Debian, if at all, since it's not really a bug.

Currently, debootstrapping sh4 works, with a few limitations. I created
a detailed howto on the Debian wiki, see:

Please note: The gcc-5 package is currently missing in sh4 and will be
throughout until roughly November, 26th as gcc-5 needs to be rebuilt for
the archive which takes a little while on native sh4 hardware. This is
*not* a bug and therefore please do *not* file a bug report.

If you are interested in Debian sh4 non-theless, join the mailing list
at:

Closing this bug report as invalid since it's not a bug with
debootstrap.

[Bug 1254824] Re: qemu-sh4-static: segmentation fault during debootstrap second stage on amd64 but not i386

2015-11-15 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Hi!

I'm the current and only active porter for Debian sh4. I was just
experimenting with qemu and sh4 chroots and just ran into the same
problem and hence stumbled over this bug report. The issue is definitely
reproducible. qemu-sh4-static on i386 works while it segfaults on sh4.

This should be reported to qemu upstream in case this hasn't happened
yet. I will take care of that.

[Bug 584756] Re: No support for HP LaserJet 4P after upgrade to lucid

2015-07-02 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Well, there is actually a generic PPD for the HP LaserJet 4 printer in
hplip:

laserjet_4-
hplip-3.15.6/prnt/ps/hp-laserjet_4-ps.ppd.gz

However, the hplip Debian package is buggy and doesn't install the
postscript PPDs at all - the printer-driver-postscript-hp package is
basically empty.

[Bug 1423995] Re: LANGUAGE is set incorrectly in ~/.kde/env/setlocale.sh

2015-06-23 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Hi Leon!

I'm attaching a patch against the current version of the kde-workspace
package in Debian and Ubuntu which adds a language selector to kdm. This
allows you to select the language for the session at login time and with
the hvelp of a few lines in your Xsession file, you are getting the
proper environment variables set for your preferred language.

With the patch applied, kdm will set the environment variable KDM_LANG
according to the selection you made in the popup menu on the greeter
screen. Just add the following lines to /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsession to use
the value of KDM_LANG to set the environment variables for LANG,
LANGUAGE and LC_ALL:

if [ -n "$KDM_LANG" ] ; then
LANGUAGE="$KDM_LANG"
LANG="$KDM_LANG"
LC_ALL="$KDM_LANG"
export LANGUAGE
export LANG
export LC_ALL
fi

Please note that the list of languages available in the selector is
currently hard-coded in kdm/kfrontend/kgreeter.cpp.

For more details, see my detailed explanation in the corresponding bug
report in Debian [1].

[Bug 1392176] Re: mounts cgroups unconditionally which causes undesired effects with cpu hotplug

2015-03-31 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
> Looking into cgmager for Ubuntu vivid,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the sole reason why cgmanager was conceived
was to have something to manage CGroups when systemd is not running.
And, as Ubuntu 15.04 (vivid), is settling on systemd by default, you can
just uninstall cgmanager as systemd does all the necessary CGroups
management.

Unless there is something I am overlooking here?

[Bug 823718] Re: Replace ~/.dmrc with AccountsService

2015-03-30 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Well, the thing is: This change broke session management and therefore I
think it's fair to comment on this right here.

Serious question: Are you actually using lightdm yourself? I mean, it's
obviously completely broken. It doesn't even restore the settings on the
same machine these days anymore.

I have filed another bug report (#1069494) on this and I don't
understand why you ask me to discuss this on an ubuntu mailing list.
This is an upstream *bug* and therefore this belongs to the upstream bug
tracker.

We have the same problem in Debian as well, so it's not an issue of what
distribution is used.

[Bug 823718] Re: Replace ~/.dmrc with AccountsService

2015-03-30 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
> So, to conclude, I'm not sure what it is you would write in that bug
report.

Just as a heads up: Restoring session still does not work in lightdm.
And, as for all arguments that speak for accounts-service-daemon, the
fact remains that switching from .dmrc to a-s-d broke session save and
restore for many corporate users.

It's super easy to reproduce if you have two computers on a network with
a shared home directory:

- user A logs in to machine "host001", chooses MATE and en_US.UTF-8 as their
defaults
- user A logs out
- user A logs into machine "host002" and neither MATE or en_US.UTF-8 are
restored as settings but some random settings which depend on who previously
logged into the machine and what user A's settings were last time logging in to
"host002"

All of this worked fine previously when using ~/.dmrc and is still
broken after switching to a-s-d. This really needs to be fixed and if
the concept of a-s-d is supposed to be kept, then a-s-d should be able
to store it's database settings across different host with the same
shared home directory.

2015-01-03 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
> Please let the user decide if using a /tmp noexec mount point is more

That doesn't even make sense. It's a fact that mounting /tmp with
"noexec" doesn't give you any extra security simply because you can
simply circumvent it by invoking the executable with the help of the
dynamic Linux loader.

Anyone who wants to run an exploit can just run "lib64/ld-
linux-x86-64.so.2 /tmp/bla" instead of just "/tmp/bla" and it will just
work. For scripts, you just invoke them through their interpreter.

[Bug 213215] Re: Please include original cdrecord (cdrtools) package in Ubuntu

2014-07-29 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
@Matteo:

Debian is moving to libburnia-project.org and cdrkit is going to be
removed soon. And, no, it's not a kindergarten, it has some serious
background which I do not like to disclose here though as it might have
legal ramifications.

Just believe me that this cannot be resolved the way you want it to be

I'm a Debian Developer and I just found out about virtualjaguar

I already managed to build the package on Debian after patching the

[Bug 823718] Re: Replace ~/.dmrc with AccountsService

2012-10-21 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Just a little provoking question? What is actually the point of
AccountsService?

The fact that AccountsService stores the default session and language
for a user *locally* in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/$USER is actually
a very bad idea. There is a reasoning behind .dmrc being stored in the
home directory which is to be independent of the login machine.

Imagine the scenario of a big university department with hundreds of
students and a computer pool. These students continuously switch
computers and AccountsService is actually a hindrance in this case.
Whenever a student hops to a different machine, they have to set their
default session and language again. What's even worse, since they don't
know which machines they have used, it might be necessary to set their
defaults again or it might be not.

So, to conclude, switching from .dmrc to AccountsService has actually
reduced the flexibility of lightdm with no apparent gain in
functionality (unless I miss something).

It should be configurable in the lightdm configuration whether
AccountsService or .dmrc are used (since we depend on this feature). I'm
going to file a bug report on this and if the lightdm developers decide
not to fix it anytime soon, I'm going to jump to fix it myself :).

Cheers,

Adrian

[Bug 1027805] Re: logins are not recorded in wtmp

2012-10-21 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
As for pam_lastlog, add this to the PAM configuration for lightdm
resolves the wtmp issue. The last command works again and all users
logged in through lightdm are logged.

Due to the principal design of lightdm, there are no failed login
attempts possible and therefore btmp is never written (this might be an
issue to be addressed, since the current lightdm design allows an
infinite number of unsuccessful logins!).

[Bug 818201] Re: Login doesn't remember the last desktop session

2012-10-18 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
> Yves-Alexis, what is wrong with accountsservice? It's a freedesktop
prokject with desktop specific depends. Not that lightdm fallbacks to
standard methods and don't hard depends on it

Well, the problem is that AccountsService is not really suited for
network logins since it stores the session and language selection to
/var/lib/AccountsService/users which is a local directory whereas saving
it to ${HOME}/.dmrc makes the settings available on any login computer.

Currently, lightdm is completely broken when it comes to loading the
last session on a network, even with version 1.4.0. It simply doesn't
work.

Honestly, it's frustrating that many upstream developers of desktop
components like the display manager always seem to completely ignore
everything which goes beyond single-user or single-machine systems.

Cheers,

Adrian

[Bug 383068] Re: Creating a new virtual machine does not allow to select ISO image

2012-08-01 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
> This bug still exists on Ubuntu Server 12.04 (32-bit).

As already mentioned earlier, you can simply ssh into your kvm server
and start virt-manager with remote forwarding. Unless your network is
really slow, you will get a reasonable performance with that (use the
option -C for ssh). I'm using virt-manager this way all the time.

In any case, I don't think it would make much sense to be able to browse
for ISO files on the connecting client (you don't really want to tunnel
a 650 MB ISO file through SSH, do you?).

[Bug 51106] Re: Calculations by "date" are wrong

2012-06-10 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Another obscure observation I made on Ubuntu 12.04 (probably affects all
previous versions as well):

glaubitz@ubuntu:~$ date -d "11:40 + 1 minutes"
Mon Jun 11 12:41:00 CEST 2012
glaubitz@ubuntu:~$ date -d "11:40 + 2 minutes"
Mon Jun 11 11:41:00 CEST 2012
glaubitz@ubuntu:~$ date -d "11:40 + 3 minutes"
Mon Jun 11 10:41:00 CEST 2012
glaubitz@ubuntu:~$ date -d "11:40 + 4 minutes"
Mon Jun 11 09:41:00 CEST 2012
glaubitz@ubuntu:~$ date -d "11:40 + 5 minutes"
Mon Jun 11 08:41:00 CEST 2012

On a side note, date seems to have trouble on systems where time_t is
too small (i.e. 32 bits instead of 64 bits):

glaubitz@debian32:~> lsb_release -rsc
6.0.5
squeeze
glaubitz@debian32:~> uname -a
Linux debian32 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-686-pae #1 SMP Wed May 30 01:20:28 UTC 2012 i686
GNU/Linux
glaubitz@debian32:~> date -d "1000 months ago"
date: invalid date `1000 months ago'
glaubitz@debian32:~> date -d "2000 months ago"
Tue Nov 17 06:29:07 CET 1981
glaubitz@debian32:~> logout
Connection to debian32 closed.
glaubitz@debian64:~> lsb_release -rsc
6.0.5
squeeze
glaubitz@debian64:~> uname -a
Linux debian64 3.2.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 25 00:15:47 UTC 2012 x86_64

glaubitz@debian64:~> date -d "2000 months ago"
Sat Oct 11 01:01:17 LMT 1845

This was tested on Debian Squeeze, but affects Ubuntu as well (tested on
Precise, 12.04). I guess this should be reported to upstream and go into
a separate bug report.

[Bug 789856] Re: blcr kernel module fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h

2011-12-24 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Wait, why did this get changed to "Fix Released"? As of 24-12-2011, blcr
is still at version 0.8.4 which does not support kernels beyond 2.6.38.
See also a related bug report at Debian [1].
