[Bug 1326191] Re: [phablet-screenshot] Fails to capture screenshot

2014-09-08 Thread John Pugh
Two problems, both in the mirscreencast line.

the mirscreencast server socket moved to /var/run from /tmp
the query is adding a screen refresh _60Hz to the filename

I'm sure it's a simple fix.

[Bug 1004792] Re: unattended-upgrade crashed with IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor

2014-04-07 Thread John Pugh
Going to mark as incomplete since this appears to be a issue with
unattended-upgrades encountering something wrong in the files it reads
from. In my case it appears a update to trusted.gpg did not complete and
left a backup copy.

unattended-upgrades should instead handle the error more gracefully, but
that needs to be a different bug.

@mpt they are different. This one is a direct result of how bug 966355

indexing/display of app metadata (or the lack thereof?).

[Bug 1263128] Re: Skype is hidden under technical items in USC when installed from deb downloaded from skype.com

2014-02-10 Thread John Pugh
There are two ways to fix this from what I see.

1) rename skype on skype.com to skype-bin

2) rename our split packages into skype-meta for the arch-independent
meta package and skype

#2 will break all upgrades wrt skype.

This is due to the fixes introduced in bug #966355

[Bug 1263128] Re: Skype is hidden under technical items in USC when installed from deb downloaded from skype

2014-02-06 Thread John Pugh
From #3 above, issue #2 is not present in 13.04 and is present in
13.10+. This would lead one to believe the problem is either in the SCA
or in the software-center client (in one of the USC components). Issue
#1 on the other hand is likely due to the multiarch packaging issue
mentioned below in paragraph #3.

Unfortunately the way that the USC (generically) handles multiarch, the
package in partner is a split package that pulls in the 32 bit
application and handles the multiarch deps for 32 bit and 64 bit. I
suspect this may play a role in this issue.

If you look at the packaging there is a skype:{i386, amd64} package that
depends on the skype-bin:{i386} package in the partner archive.

[Bug 968974] Re: Some free applications looks like paid applications with price 0.00 and with buy button

2012-11-28 Thread John Pugh
@cassidyjames you and @stolowski have valid points. I think there needs
to be delineation of free to access apps vs go thru buy process
apps. For instance, apps in the paid applications/commercial status do
require one to go through the buy process to validate a subscription
whereas other apps that are not commercial do not. So technically
commercial apps are not free, but they are $0.00 requiring one to go
through the purchase process which is simply a login to the pay system
for validation.

@Munawar you state that you purchased and installed and have been
playing the game for some time? There have not been any updates to this
application since release so I'm sure that everyone is confused as to
where to find and resolve your issue.

IF you are receiving a 401 error on the World of Goo repository, then we
will need to reset your subscription. Please reply again ONLY on bug
#1008289 with the details of the error and we will resolve it.

[Bug 966498] Re: libreoffice-draw *should* depend on libreoffice-pdfimport

2012-05-07 Thread John Pugh
By your logic, Christopher only libreoffice-draw would install
libreoffice-pdfimport? That's not right.

If one installs the primary libreoffice package, libreoffice-pdfimport
*should* be installed.

However if I install *only* libreoffice-draw then I don't want the full
libreoffice package, I only want libreoffice-draw. In this case only
libreoffice-draw *should* be installed.

[Bug 993233] Re: Purchased software not installed

2012-05-03 Thread John Pugh
The problem is that this app was available as a explicit amd64 package
as Michael pointed out above in Natty and Maverick. With the multiarch
changes presented in Oneiric and Precise the amd64 build was dropped,
however the entry in the SCA was not updated. Upon discovery (this bug)
we went ahead and removed the amd64 entries which took affect yesterday.

We have a bug #966335 that will address the issue with multiarch and
presentation to the USC by the SCA.

I hope your payment has been addressed - if not, reply and we'll
rectify.

The package will run as i386 on amd64, but will not install using the
USC currently (it would have to be a manual install).

[Bug 938736] Re: For-purchase apps not showing up on Oneiric

2012-02-22 Thread John Pugh
The issue is that we have 3 applications (all PDFs) that show up fine in
 apps.ubuntu.com.

 https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/oneiric/fullcircle-issue-57/
 https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/oneiric/fullcircle-it-spec-3/
 https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/oneiric/fullcircle-it-issue-56/

However all three of these cannot be found in the Software Center client
 (5.04) in Oneiric.

Michael V is not able to reproduce and I believe that Anthony is unable
to reproduce the problem either. However the developer, Dave M and I can
 reproduce it.
There is a error when the client tries to update the data from the
software-center agent server. With the help of you and Dave I found
that the cache of httplib2 contains the follwing in e.g.:
 ~/.cache/software-center/scaclient/software-center.ubuntu.com,api,2.0,applications,en,ubuntu,oneiric,i386,,d8cf7fa67c82edc14789f34f01dad0df

 content-location:
 https://software-center.ubuntu.com/api/2.0/applications/en/ubuntu/oneiric/i386/
 -x-permanent-redirect-url:
 http://software-center.ubuntu.com/api/2.0/applications/en/ubuntu/oneiric/i386/

This causes the httplib2 code to immediately raise a error.

As a workaround we need to remove the -x-permanent-redirect-url from
the servers response and then figure out if/how to fix httplib2.
- At first I thought it was httplib2 that was storing the https and
http responses under the same file, but then I noticed that the cache
filename includes an md5 sum of the complete url, including the
  scheme.
- Confirmed by looking at a dump of davmor's cache, that there were
  *two* files starting with
  software-center.ubuntu.com,api,2.0,applications,en,ubuntu,oneiric,i386
(jpugh, could you confirm that you have two as well?), one for http
and one for https, and they're redirecting the browser between each
  other, causing the infinite loop.
- As mentioned in my previous email, requesting available apps via https
bounces you over to http, but requesting them via http returns the
actual list of apps, so this didn't add up with the contents of
  davmor's cache.
- With RT #50628 we added a squid cache in front of our 2.0 API. Until
then, it seems the list of apps was being served over http*s*, and
requesting over http would bounce you over (exactly opposite to how
it is now. This was a bug that was fixed during this RT.
- This RT was set up on production on February 2. Checking the dates in
the responses in davmor's cache, the redirect from http-https is from
December (before the RT), and the redirect for https-http is from
February 8 (after the RT), so that makes sense.
- The thing with 301 responses is that they *never* get expired by
httplib2's cache. They're permanent redirects, so that's technically
  the correct thing to do.

So I don't know how many users will be affected by this, but it seems
like the way to work around this would be to either:
a) Modify httplib2 a bit to expire permanent redirect responses from the
cache every once in a while, or
b) zap the entire cache and start over every once in a while.

Option a) would be tidier I think. As for a short term fix, just
removing the cache (or just the entry for the http-https redirect)
should get rid of the problem.

[Bug 862171] Re: Running instance of Libreoffice writer disappears from launcher, but keeps running

2011-11-08 Thread John Pugh
The behavior I get is:
 - remove the launcher icon from the launcher
 - run the app
 - switch around on the same window with several apps
 - icon will go away in both the launcher and alt-tab screen
 - subsequent restarts of that app will fail to put a icon on the launcher
bar until the next reboot.
  - run libreoffice again and it will go back to the app running

The app is running in the background, but not visible/accessible via

But according the Software Center desktop app there are applications
such as SpaceChem, World of Goo, Clockwork Man, Braid, etc available in
Oneiric. For starters there is not a buy or install button on the
line as with other applications, however when you click More info
there is a buy button and the buy sends you to pay.ubuntu.com but
this then fails with a blank screen for me and a 404 for others.

[Bug 589128] Re: Please update to 2.0

2010-10-22 Thread John Pugh
This was sync'd from Debian and it's orphaned on Sid currently.
The package is at v2.1 now.

Can someone take on upgrading it in Debian and sync'ing that during the
Natty sync cycle? Unless there is a better way.

[Blueprint ldap-defaultdit-usergrp-mgmt] Default LDAP DIT for user and group managment

2009-04-30 Thread John Pugh
Blueprint changed by John Pugh:

Whiteboard changed to:

dendrobates: This is a good idea, but I would like to see a community
discussion about DIT layout. i.e. the use of dc=example,dc=com, over
o=example.com. I have almost always used dc, but not for any good
reason.

ru: having DIT in any form is very important for corporations. this
feature can (in future) replace MS AD ecosystem.

koptein: DIT and ldap means not (mail-, directory, or other) domains.
dc=example,dc=com is for a domain, also o=example.com is a domain and
both aren't very good for a bigger company structure. One example - for
better clarification - i use .uk (or .de, nl, ...).

If you start with dc=example,dc=uk and your company grow up with another
location, say example.br, how can s/o layout this new structure. Same for
o=example.uk and o= or ou= or c= ...  example.br? Always a new DIT for a new
location? The important thing is not the domain (whatever domain), is is the
name of the structure, the comany. So for one of the best (L)DAP implementation
(NDS or eDirectory) nearly everyone recomends an o=example -- without any com,
org, net, uk, br, ... and other locations (or parts of an comypnay like sales,
hr, stock, ...) are in the second level in the DIT, like ou=br.
LDAP is not only for users and groups, what about computers, DNS, DHCP,
Harddisk, Pools, Volumes (LVM), SoftwareRAID-Level, Rights,
Clusterconfiguration, Loadbalancing, Routing, RIP, BGP, Applications and many
more? Think bigger but start small.

ru: 2 koptein - And what to do if we have many companies at one
server(s)? just create o=MyCompany and o=AsteriskCompany and
o=AnotherOneCompany? What is the difference with dc=MyCompany,dc=com
and dc=AsteriskCompany,dc=com and dc=AnotherCompany,dc=com ? We need
some strategy for DIT with many locations / contries / companies.

2 all - From Ubuntu survey - it seems that Ubuntu server are usually
used by SOHO, and they do not use Ubuntu as directory server because of
lack DIT feature. For me it means that better to have DIT good for SOHO
and suitable for big companies. From my point DIT in Ubuntu is most
important feature in 9.04 release.

ru: is there any work with this blueprint? if not - may be use eBox as official
DIT for Ubuntu?
or may be Canonical do not want to create any competitor to their proprietary
Landscape. Is any ideas?

ivoks: let's break away from o=organization and dc=domain,dc=com.
Clearly, both are false thinking since, as ru said, this logic doesn't
cover more organizations under one 'o' or more domains under one 'dc'.
Let's start thinking about server as a top organization. So, instead
'o=Organization Name', let's do 'o=Server Name'. That way we could have
lots of organizations and lots of domains on the same server. We should
just follow the logic of setup. We setup domain/organization on server -
make the server top tree.

2009-04-29 ro: The implementation of a directory server is essential for
Linux business adoption of all sizes - from small to medium to large
enterprises. In the year 2009, central authentification should be
available out-of-the-box, especially for a distribution that wants to
conquer the (corporate) desktops and servers. There are a few good
implementations out there (Mandriva Directory Server, eBox) which might
inspire the work to be done in Ubuntu. An equivalent to Group Policies
is important too, but out of the scope for this spec. However, an LDAP
directory server is the foundation of all the other services built on
top of it, so let's try to get it ready for 9.10.

2009-04-30 ro: If you like to think in larger scales, have a look at
FreeIPA [http://freeipa.org/page/Main_Page]. It is an implementation by
Red Hat/Fedora which provides exactly what is proposed here plus many
things more. So not only centralized user/group authentication and
management, but also e.g. Group Policies and Single Sign-on. The nice
thing is, one if its main focuses is on usability and ease of
administration in conjunction with flexibility. Isn't that what we
sorely afflicted admins have been waiting for all the time? Btw, Bug
#259547 ([needs-packaging] FreeIPA) covers exactly this.

2009-04-30 jpugh: The entire reason for a directory is to organize
around your network. I disagree with ivoks view as having dc=server as
this setup would create unnecessary traversal for trivial items. The
logical setup is to allow a new directory installation to setup their
own DIT the way they want to vs dictating what ubuntu thinks they need.
Recommendations are ok and the standard since LDAP came on the horizon
in the mid-90's have not changed much because they work. Keep it simple,
because any relatively knowledgeable directory administrator will change
it to suit the business. What is needed is a default schema discussion
as the schema will dictate the ease of directory management.
Unfortunately openldap still requires restart to reset the schema. I
vote that we take the FreeIPA DIT and go

problems. I do have problems with ath9k, but that is another bug.

I am not sure if the wireless driver patch that Luis entered has been
added yet?

Is is pro or standard Macbook?

[Bug 301822] Re: ath9k drops connection

2009-01-15 Thread John Pugh
What kernel are you using?

I have the same issue using 2.6.27-11 and ath9k. I have seen other bugs
with similar issues. This may be a duplicate as it looks the same.

[Bug 289356] Re: ath9k causes system lockup

2009-01-15 Thread John Pugh
Their are two issues here. The original issue is a current bug, however
the lockup is separate and fixed as noted below.

The other issues listed are SEPARATE and fixed in 2.6.27.11+ currently
in intrepid-proposed.

The workaround is to sudo modprobe -r ath9k then sudo modprobe ath9k
although there is a disconnect issue currently being worked through
(several duplicate bugs).

[Bug 278190] Re: [ath9k] AR5418 frequently fails to connect to WEP/WPA network

2009-01-15 Thread John Pugh
I don't think this can be attributed to bluetooth/wireless on the same
chip.

This problem manifests itself AFTER some time being connected so I think
that it is related to the kernel problem reported in
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/267089

This problem does not show up until after a specific amount of time. I
believe the problem is related to the buffer overrun.

[Bug 267089] Re: 2.6.27-2 kernel on intrepid: disk is mounted in RO after several hours

2009-01-15 Thread John Pugh
Sorry I replied and quoted the entire message above

I do not think this is completely fixed.

This bug
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/linux/+bug/278190
manifests itself after some time running with no other processes. I can
re-create on my Macbook Pro v3,1 with 2.6.27-11

This kernel fixes the original symptoms, but still has ath9k problems.
