[Bug 1731833] [NEW] Surface P4 -Network adapter bug(frequent disconnections)

2017-11-12 Thread John Ross
Public bug reported:

After finding myself somewhat disappointed (again)with Windows 10, I decided to
switch back to Ubuntu. Picking up 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Alpha amd64
distro for my Surface 4 Pro, I got stuck with the network disconnections bug
explained here; additionally, I have identified a few less problematic device
issues like camera, poor sound quality, no touch screen, and no Bluetooth pen
as so far. Back to the network adapter, after researching a ton of forums, I
end up with this one hoping that the solution number one from Jesse will help.
I run "$ sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf" command and fund
[Device]
Wifi.scan-rand-mac-address = no in place. In desperation, I have changed it
to "yes" hoping that NO might interfere with this distro only, but the results
are the same as was before. Disconnections occurred as frequent as before with
exactly same patterns. As I am inexperienced with Linux, I depend on your help,
can anyone guide me what to do next, please?

[Bug 1294899] Re: Import saved VPN connection has been Recently Broken

2016-06-23 Thread John Ross
No, I don't think that is the only issue. I'm trying to import OpenVPN
files provided by StrongVPN.

One of them is an older VPN file that does not have inlined certs. This
one used to work with no problems in Xubuntu 14.04. Since upgrading to
Xubuntu 16.04 I get an error when trying to import it. I don't think
this one is related to bug #606365.

I also downloaded a newer OpenVPN file from StrongVPN that has inlined
certs. This one also causes an error when I attempt to import it under
Xubuntu 16.04. This one may be related to bug #606365 but there may be
some other issues too?

Since neither of the OpenVPN files can be imported I had to configure
the VPN by manually reading the OpenVPN files and transcribing the
settings into the network manager.

[Bug 1294899] Re: Import saved VPN connection has been Recently Broken

2016-05-17 Thread John Ross
Erik,

I'm using StrongVPN. I've used the same .ovpn now for several years and
it used to work fine.

I tried opening US West.ovpn from your .zip and it came in fine. I could
not actually test the configuration of course since I didn't have
username and password. I suppose this points to a compatibility issue?

After successful import of your file, I went to StrongVPN and got a
newer .ovpn file. It uses inline certs instead of separate cert files.

Sadly, when I try to import it I get this error message:

Cannot import VPN connection
The file '.ovpn' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN
connection information
Error: Key file contains line 'remote 72.18.194.140 500 udp' which is not a
key-value pair, group, or comment.

Perhaps this will give someone a clue as to the issue here. Thanks for
your help!

[Bug 1294899] Re: Import saved VPN connection has been Recently Broken

2016-05-17 Thread John Ross
I can confirm that OpenVPN import function does not work on any of the
numerous systems that I have upgraded from Xubuntu 14.04 to 16.04.

I note that I have all of the required packages installed and that the
.ovpn file I'm using have worked in the past under 14.04. In case it
matters, the .ovpn files NOT use inline certs which is apparently the
cause of another related OVPN bug.

In summary then, when attempting to import a .ovpn file, I get the
following error message:

Cannot import VPN connection
The file '.ovpn' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN
connection information
Error: the plugin does not support import capability

With some trial and error I was able to manually configure the settings
using the ovpn file as a guide. This is very time consuming and exercise
and it would be much better if the import function was repaired.

to Intel mode the login works as it should. I'm able to run this way for
now, but it's a show stopper issue for the average user.

[Bug 1352625] Re: Launchpad private security bug report trasmitted in open e-mail

confusion on that point.

I don't doubt that thousands of people have received plain text email on
private security issues under the current system with no harm done. The
question remains however whether it is the correct policy? Clearly in
most cases it's no big deal, but someday there may well be a case where
it is and that is why I filed the bug report.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives "no device media found"

2011-09-29 Thread John Ross
I only follow this bug from time so I apologize if the following
suggestion is treading on old ground.

It is true that floppies are no longer the norm for most users, but
Linux/Ubuntu should still provide reasonable support since there remains
a mountain of expensive to replace hardware out there that still uses
them. Ultimately, I think the question boils down to what do we mean by
reasonable support?

Perhaps auto probing is too much to expect so maybe we don't even try to
resolve that mess. Instead, we aim to make a simple way to manually tell
the OS that the computer has a floppy after the OS is installed. If this
flag is set then the OS does whatever it should to make working with the
floppy easy. That means GUI and cli functions that work properly and
smoothly. If the floppy present flag is false then the OS hides all
floppy related functions from the user. This avoids autoprobe issues and
eliminates confusion for new users who are going to wonder why there's a
floppy icon on the desktop when they don't have a floppy drive in their
machine.

Let me emphasize that I'm an engineer and not a software developer so I
recognize that what I propose here may or may not be easy to implement
for a variety of reasons. Nonetheless it seems we need to do something
to move past the impasse on this question of floppy support and get
something that works reasonably well for everyone.

Best Wishes,

John

[Bug 778059] Re: Upgrade to Natty renders computer unbootable

2011-05-17 Thread John Ross
Hi,

I encountered the same problems as the above posters, both when
upgrading from 10.04, and, later, when doing a clean install. In each
instance I tried purging and reinstalling grub using a live-cd following
this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1581099. I also
tried restoring the MBR to the Windows boot menu via Super Grub Disk and
then doing a clean install of 11.04, without success.

 Downgrading to Maverick grub worked.

Here's my hardware profile, hope it helps.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives "no device media found"

2011-04-02 Thread John Ross
Looks like this one persists in Natty Beta. Worse, I see no option in
Natty to downgrade to the old version of udisks as was the case in
Lucid.

I will note that some of us engineer types still rely on floppies to
record data. We do this because we are using older test instruments with
built in floppy drives. These instruments are super expensive and have
long service lives so its impractical to replace them as we do with
computers that are updated every few years. As a result there are many
labs that will be using floppies for many years to come. Please try to
get this function working properly again in Ubuntu. Thanks!

[Bug 689125] [NEW] Lucid hard crash with usb web cam and VMWare

2010-12-11 Thread John Ross
Public bug reported:

For reference I'm using VMWare Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285 and Ubuntu
10.04 with a Logitech QuickCam 9000 USB Webcam.

I'm not sure if this is a bug with VMware or Ubuntu. In any event its
clear that they DO NOT play well together when using Logitech 9000 USB.
For example, when starting a Windows XP session in VMWare everything
works fine until I attempt to connect the USB webcam to the virtual
machine. At that point, the whole system - including VMware guest and
the Ubuntu host! The freeze is hard with lockout on keyboard, mouse, and
network so the only recourse is to power cycle the machine.

I have done some research on this issue before posting this bug report.
You will find two workarounds here:

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/257460

The key point here is that the snd_usb_audio module is the culprit. I
have confirmed that both workarounds discussed above solve the crash
problem. Unfortunately, neither is a completely acceptable solution.
Option 1 leaves open the chance for a hard freeze if one isn't very
careful with enabling/disabling the USB audio device in Sound
preferences. Option 2 disables all USB audio on the host which isn't
very helpful if one wants to use the webcam directly on the Ubuntu host!

I'm reporting this bug here in hopes that if it is a bug on the Ubuntu
side that it will be pushed upstream to the appropriate team. I will
also submit a bug report to VMware on the chance that it is in their
court. Perhaps someone from the Ubuntu developer side could contact
VMWare tech support and have a faster chance of resolving the problem?

In terms of triage I would rate this bug serious since it results in
hard freeze which as we all know can cause system damage and loss of
data.

Lastly, even though this may indeed be a VMWare issue, I would hope
folks on the Ubuntu team will still help resolve the issue as it is
technologies such as VMware that enable people to migrate away from the
dominant OS and onto Ubuntu.

Thanks and best wishes!

John

[Bug 549447] Re: eGalax touchscreen configured as tablet

2010-05-19 Thread John Ross
I tried kb1605 workaround. It only works with "click on touch" mode.
This is fine for opening programs, tapping menus but useless if you
intend to use the stylus to draw or write on the screen with something
like xournal.

I have yet to try Ernesto's suggestions. More later...

[Bug 549447] Re: eGalax touchscreen configured as tablet

2010-04-30 Thread John Ross
I also ran into this bug when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 RC on an Asus
901 modified with touchscreen that uses eGalax driver. Everything worked
great prior to upgrade but I got the same "jump to upper left corner"
type of behavior no matter what version of eGalax driver I used. I've
reverted to 9.10 until the issue is resolved.

Martin,

I have not had the opportunity to do a fresh install of 8.10 on a system
with a large (i.e. TB) disk. I have however recently installed 8.10 on a
eee pc 900a with 32 GB SSD and 2 GB RAM. Using the default settings for
encrypted LVM resulted in only 256 MB of swap space. This was
insufficient to hibernate the machine and very frustrating since the
swap size is not evident until after the OS is loaded so I had to
reinstall using manual encrypted LVM configuration.

Since encrypted LVM is becoming most essential for many users,
especially those in business or using laptops, I suggest that the
alternative installer software be modified as follows:

1. always display disk and LVM configuration settings and request user
ok prior to formatting & installing
2. give the user the option to modify default settings on LVM volume
size (especially on swap) without having to go through a completely
manual encrypted LVM installation.

Thanks!

John

Re: [Bug 225785] Re: using default encrypted LVM settings with 1.5 TB disk makes huge swap space

2008-07-23 Thread John Ross
Brian,

Thanks for taking time to classify this one. I got stuck with some hi
priority items at work when I was in the middle of filing the initial
report and had to drop it without taking time to classify it. Sorry...

I'm sure that there's probably an easy fix to this one that will put
reasonable bounds on swap. In addition to that however I think the
installer should always display a summary and confirmation screen prior
to going through setup. This way we can check things and be sure it
makes sense before we waste time formatting and loading the OS. In my
case I didn't discover the problem until a week or so after initial
install at which point I had substantial additional software loaded and
configured. Of course all of this had to be redone after correcting the
config error.

[Bug 225785] [NEW] using default encrypted LVM settings with 1.5 TB disk makes huge swap space

2008-05-02 Thread John Ross
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 8.04 Alternate AMD64 installation on system with 1.5 TB
3ware HW RAID 5 setup.

Selected auto partition using encrypted LVM. Installation proceeded
normally.

Upon reboot I find installer created an LVM swap area of 499 GB with the
remainder going to LVM ROOT.

This is a big waste of space and time since there is no display of final
configs to check prior to going through the
rest of the install.

I've used encrypted LVM setup just fine with default settings on my other
systems but they all have relatively
small disks. I'm guessing that the large disk area is causing math problems in
the installer.

I've gone through this twice on my system to confirm that I wasn't imagining
it. I was able to use manual partitioning
and setup a reasonable system with 64 GB swap so there is a work around.

I installed the update with no problem here. USB drive now works.
Haven't had time to check firewire. Thanks to all who contributed to
this fix!

[Bug 148003] Re: mounting Luks encrypted USB-HDD does not work reliably

2008-01-20 Thread John Ross
WARNING

A word of warning to those who have removed the file 65-dmsetup.rules. I
had found that this temporary fix worked quite well on all my machines,
but got burned when an automatic update of cryptsetup got installed
without me thoroughly considering the possible ramifications. The net
result was that my machines were rendered unbootable. All I got at
startup was a message that my cryptroot could not be found and then
routed to a busy box.

I'm not entirely sure what happened, but think that 65-dmsetup.rules
needs to be there if the update is going to update the initframfs.
Without the file the update of initramfs doesn't complete. Since there
is no warning of this from update manager, you're stuck with an
unbootable system on restart. This was my first major panic with Linux
and I spent a lot of time googling and futzing with a LiveCD before I
figured out the problem and repaired the mess.

Bottom Line: Avoid this situation by putting 65-dmsetup.rules back where
it belongs before you run any automatic updates related to the
cryptsetup.

Hope this saves someone some time!

[Bug 154679] Re: Can't mount a LUKS volume after unmounting

2007-11-30 Thread John Ross
I've seen this bug as well. It occurs with firewire and usb drives. It
appears to assign a new device name each time the drive is plugged in. I
wonder how many times this would have to happen before something bigger
breaks? This bug is very frustrating since I'm using fully encrypted
disks throughout my operation and use . What's the odds of getting a fix
on this one sometime soon?
