[Bug 1862423] Re: Save directory for gnome-screenshots cannot be changed

2020-10-04 Thread John Toliver
I found this extension while researching another problem. I invite any
thoughts on its usage with regard to security.

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1112/screenshot-tool/

gthub info here

[Bug 1862423] Re: Save directory for gnome-screenshots cannot be changed

2020-10-03 Thread John Toliver
Possible workaround until this bug gets fixed:
I made my own shortcut in settings "/usr/bin/gnome-screenshots -i" Then I
assigned shortcut to be print screen. Interactive mode does remember last
saved directory so that's a safe work around for the archive.

Hope this helps somebody.

Okay, this is odd. I've gotten the source for samba using apt-get source
winbind, built it without optimizations, then used LD_PRELOAD to override the
system's copy of libnss_wins.so with my fresh copy, then launched rhythmbox
(which segfaulted whenever it tried to resolve a hostname.) and it isn't
crashing! I'll do some investigating to see if it was gcc's optimizations that
mucked it up or some other cause, but at least this is progress!
It's 5 AM here, so I ought to get to bed, but I'll dig deeper tomorrow!

This bug will not be fixed. In theory, the problem is going to be corrected
whenever gnome 3.0 is released, and will have a completely different
architecture for panels etc.

sk8erbender: Thank you for the bug confirmation. However, Dylan McCall
put it succinctly in comment #202: The source of this problem is really
close to the heart of the panel's design. It allows user-defined
positions for applets, and these are stored with absolute values (in
pixels). No amount of fiddling will change that that is a very poor,
inflexible design.

Unless a dev corrects me, this bug will not be fixed. It will only go
away when a replacement is enacted, or there is a complete redesign of
the fundamental panel code architecture and assumptions. In the
meantime, there are a number of workarounds in the discussion above, but
for now, this paper cut will continue to bleed.

Some workaround suggestions in the comments above:

2010-10-25 Thread John Toliver
Yeah but awn I noted doesn't always work with some applications. Like I
have a windows app installed under wine and the shortcut I place on my
desktop won't work in awn. It does that thing where the icon will move
telling you the pc is doing something and then everything stops (the pc
wants you to forget you clicked on the icon)

Only way it works is either on the desktop, from the menu, or from the panel.

Because, as said Keith Allcock, gnome-panel version included is after to

Re: [Bug 15019] Re: Difficulty downgrading packages with dependencies

2009-09-24 Thread John Toliver
It's been a while so I don't remember the conversation but I think you turn
off the proposed repos in synaptic and then do the updates. Synaptic will
recognize it is dealing with different versions that what is in the stable
branch and downgrade things back to those version numbers.

I would ask for someone else to verify that but I believe that is what I
did.

2009/9/24 ಸಿಂಧು ಸುಂದರ sindhusunda...@gmail.com

So how exactly does one _mass_ downgrade packages from newer than those
found in archive to the versions _found_ in archive?

Can someone provide me with the CLI command please? *pleading eyes*

Status in “synaptic” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
There are some difficulties that I have found with downgrading packages
 that
have dependencies on the version that I am changing. It would be nice if
downgrades were as easy as upgrades (though I completely understand the
difficulty in this). There are two particular situations that I have been
 frustrated with:

 1) If the package to be downgraded is depended on at that version by other
packages. This will usually notify you that those packages will be removed
because of breaking dependencies. However it is commonly the case (I'm
 thinking
*-dev packages) where the dependent package could be downgraded and, as a
result, no package removals would be necessary.

 2) If a package being downgraded depends on a package of the current
 version.
This is even more frustrating. Synaptic will actually just ignore the
 request
and not provide an explanation. If the depended package were downgraded
 along
with this package all conflicts would be resolved.

The current method I have been using to get around this is to let synaptic
remove the prackages, and before I commit I'll force the versions to what
 they
need to be. This is difficult and annoying. I see two ways of fixing this,
 an
easy to implement but less automated way, and a difficult to implement but
highly optimized way. The easy way is to actually support force version for
packages under a multiple select and try and force all of them not just the
 last
clicked. The other way would be to check to see when a downgrade is
 requested
that causes conflicts if there is a set of version changes that will fix
 the
problem. In either case I think allowing force version on a selection of
packages is a must. This (ideally) would let you even deal with different
packages that have different versions to choose from all collected
 together.

Hope this is constructive, I enjoy this software and hope you guys keep up
 the
 good work.

Re: [Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-01-02 Thread John Toliver
Renzo,

Thanks for the reply. I completely missed 54-57 and they helped much. Just
as a note in case someone else runs into this:

I downloaded the source which placed a folder called gvfs-0.2.5. Then
moved to ~/gvfs-0.2.5/daemon/ folder and downloaded and saved the patched
titled patch to prefer kerberos, then fall back to password with the
filename authent.patch in the daemon folder.

I ran this command $ patch gvfs.patch and the error I received was

patching file gvfsbackendsmbbrowse.c
patch: malformed patch at line 218: failed */

I then went back to line 218 in authent.patch and apparently it had a NL in
it instead of a line beginning with + of course I removed that NL and
saved and the patch went properly. The point was copying and pasting the
line out of the browser may not respect the CR and NL's that the file was
orignially written in so manually touching up the file may be needed.

I then created all the .debs and dpkg -i *.deb 'd them all. I'm waiting
until I move to a network other than my home network to test and see how it
works out.

Thanks again for the push,
John

[Bug 312535] [NEW] When trying to produce a .PDF file from openoffice

2008-12-30 Thread John Toliver
Public bug reported:

OS is Hardy 8.04 fully patched
Openoffice.org 3.0

Here are the four programs I have used to test this:
1. Evince
2. Xournal (which has some limited pdf editing capability through use of layers)
3. Acrobat reader 8 for linux
4. Foxit reader 2.2 for Windows

Scenario 1:
When I create a document in Openoffice and wish for this document to be
readable on all platforms I select export to PDF I then
usually leave the default options except I select the PDF/A1 as the help says
it preserves internally all the fonts used in the document.

When I wish to print a hard copy of the document, if I print from
acrobat reader all of the text is garbage though the display is correct.
When I open the same document in xournal it prints properly. When I
open in evince (which I try to avoid because of another printing problem
I have with it) it prints properly. When I open the file on a windows
installation using foxit reader 2.2 it displays garbage. On each
platform if it displayed garbage it will print garbage except for
acrobat which will display the text normally but still print garbage.

1. Xournal - result=normal
2. Evince - result=normal
3. Acrobat 8 - result= normal display but garbage printout
4. Windows foxit reader 2.2 - result garbage display and printout

Scenario 2:

I create the document in openoffice and I create another in gedit( the purpose
is to narrow whether it is openoffice export mechanism or a different part of
the PDF printing process)
This time I use print to PDF (the built in PDF printer that shipped with
Hardy) and then open in Acrobat and in foxit reader. In Acrobat, the text is
normal and the printout is garbage data. When I open the same document on
foxit reader in windows the display and print out is clean for both documents.

1. Xournal - not tested
2. Evince - not tested
3. Acrobat8 Hardy - result= display normal and garbage print
4. foxit reader on windows result = display and print is good

Scenario 3
Created document in openoffice and exported from openoffice. then I printed on
foxit and display was clear and print was clear.

I am not certain where the problem is but I think it is in Acrobat.
This is the reason I did not attach this to a certain application or
create the bug through the report a problem provision from within the
application.

I will attach the documents I used. On test.pdf , it was created and
exported as mentioned above in Oo.o3. OTH, Unsaved_Document_1.pdf and
Part_D_journal.pdf were both created using the Hardy PDF converter.
for Part D Journal it was created in openoffice and exported in
openoffice.

I realized after I started typing that launchpad only allows for 1
attachment in this post so I put all four in one file gzip'd.

Any help would be appreciated.

JT - Yeah. I figured out why everyone ignored me. Apparently Linux has
this nice little command called patch which 'patches' an original file
with the 'new.patch' file. I didn't do the patch as it's for an older
version of gvfs than what I have and I didn't know how that would affect my
system, nor did I know how to update it for my version, but basically you
say patch [options] original file patch file at the CLI. So basically
the originally installed file that isn't authenticating when browsing gets
all the additions from the text file darkrain42 made. You select all text
and save it as whatever.patch. I still don't know which original gvfs
file to patch but you can get an idea, I think from looking in synaptic at
the gvfs files, and then look at the tab that lists where all the installed
files are.

For more reading do man patch at the CLI and it tells you how .patch files
are made but I'm waiting on an official backport (or until I figure out how
to safely patch my system ;-p) as it's not a show stopper for me at the
moment.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-12-21 Thread John Toliver
I have been researching this and trying to figure out how to apply the
patch that has been mentioned above that includes authentication in
browsing of shares.

So the way to apply this patch is this:

sudo patch [options]file-to-be-patched patch-file-from-launchpad

I need to know the file that is supposed to be patched.

This would make the first time I'm trying this so do I need to know
anything else?

Can I back up the original file before the patch in case things go
south?

Any help is appreciated.

Using hardy beta, when I browse with nautilus other machines in an Active

The ADS integration of the hardy box was done using winbind, kerberos and
PAM libraries, essentially as described here:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto
The network contains mostly windows clients, but also several linux
boxes, which were joined to the ADS domain with the command: 'net ads join'.
Machines running windows XP, windows 2003 and samba show '0 objects' in
nautilus, but after inserting the complete path (eg.: smb://server/share)
the folders can be accessed after the password prompt.
Machines running windows 2000 show their folders regularly.

Here is a detailed description of what happens:

  Case 1
 -
Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running ubuntu-gutsy server.

 are displayed;
Double-click on the 'gutsy-server' icon -- after a while, Nautilus
 returns '0 objects', without asking for a password;
Insert the full address (smb://gutsy-server/share) -- a password is
requested and the share content is displayed.

  Case 2

Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running Windows XP

Re: [Bug 64594] Re: hurestore will always crash on startup (unfinished tool)

2008-08-28 Thread John Toliver
I agree. Between sbackup which appears to be working correctly, and
hubackup/restore which doesn't work at all, I'm just about ready to
start scripting my own backup scheme which I don't want to do, but I
agree, hu* shouldn't even be mentioned and should be removed from the
repos until it does work, and on the off chance that it actually has
been fixed, it should be put on the queue to upgrade.

[Bug 222826] Re: Openoffice.org 2.4 will not run reports created in version 2.3.1

2008-07-25 Thread John Toliver
I will provide better data as I'm in a hurry now but I ended up
resolving it by doing some manual editing of my 2.3 formatted data to
make it 2.4 compliant. I'm no longer able to accurately tell you if
this would occur as my reports worked afterwards.

Suspend starting working properly (proposed kernel is probably the worst
choice if you just want to be a user, no?)

Oh yes I learned that too. It makes sense. I think I attached this
question in reference to an issue with upgrading to a version of
Openoffice with a bug. It didn't come from the 'proposed' though. I
just wanted to know if a clean way to go backwards existed. Anyway I
ended up installing the Non-Ubuntu'ized' version until I found a
suitable workaround.

[Bug 222826] [NEW] Openoffice.org 2.4 will not run reports created in version 2.3.1

2008-04-26 Thread John Toliver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I upgraded Ubuntu Linux from version 7.10 to 8.04, the package
Openoffice 2.3.1 was upgraded to 2.4. When I open up a database I
created in version 2.3.1, and attempt to run a report, the report fails
with this error:

The query with the statement '' could not be run. Check your data
source.

I have various reports all created in 2.3.1 and all reports break with
the same error message. Further investigation reveals the query the
reports display data from function properly. The data from the tables
is intact and I can find no other issues in the database except the
report itself.

See below for links to Openoffice.org forums which indicate the issue
may relate to dynamic reports, and also reports created using the
standard Openoffice wizard.

Others report similar symptoms on both windows and Linux machines see
here:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=69966

and here:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=70475highlight=query+statement+run+check+cheque+data+source

The version is Hardy Heron Kernel 2.6.24-16-generic, Gnome 2.22.1 and
when the problem occurred I was using 2.4 the release that was installed
automatically with the distribution upgrade.

Actually it's stopped doing this. I don't believe I've done anything
differently. It's gone from a problem happening every reboot to
happening every month etc. The next time it does happen I will move
the icons a few pixels away and test this

move the panels a couple of pixels away from the edge and other applets

but could be worth a try.

Is it always the clock that's being pushed to the left? It's the applet
that takes the longest time to load here.. Might that have anything to
 do with it?

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2007-11-18 Thread John Toliver
I notice it happens when I reboot, and no resolution changes, nor have I
added anything new to the panel. Two Icons on the far left simply
appeared in interchanged positions. For example, the icons were in
position 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 before reboot, and after reboot they are in
position 1-2-3-4-5-7-6. Again all icons are locked. This happens on
kernel 2.6.22-14 generic, gnome 2.20.1. Please advise if more
information required.
