[Bug 220869] [NEW] X crashes after installing fpit driver in Hardy

2008-04-22 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-fpit

I was trying to set up my Finepoint pen in Hardy (worked in Gutsy).
Compiled the module from the GIT head, set up xorg.conf as it should be,
installed setserial and put a line in /etc/serial.conf for the pen. The
tablet didn't seem to detect the pen. So I went to Synaptic to get the
driver off the repo's which is a version behind, I believe. Installed it
and now when I get the pen near the screen X crashes and restarts.

Attached is my xorg.conf. Entries by TOUCHSCREEN seem to be showing up
in my X log but there is no entry for this in my xorg.conf

[Bug 132065] Re: screen stops refreshing after rotate when running compiz fusion

2008-07-27 Thread Jon Arnold
deathrow: here is the i386 version of the package.

I don't know how to make the 64-bit version so if someone can tell me
the command, i still have the source directory up and just went through
a hellacious process of installing the dependents.

Thanks for the patch, Tom. Hopefully, this will not be necessary in
Intrepid.

[Bug 259523] [NEW] doesn't identify correct partition

2008-08-19 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pysdm

Using pysdm, when I click on my sda1 partition, which is a ext3
partition on an ATA drive that I use for media backup (music, pictures,
etc.), the program asks "/dev/sdb5 hasn't been configured. Do you want
to configure it now?" sdb5 is my swap partition that is with my main
partition on an SATA drive.

If I click OK, the program is still looking at my swap partition.

was. I think it makes sense to require root privileges for
adding/deleting printers, but it shouldn't for seeing their status.

[Bug 215234] [NEW] Digital Camera Issues in Hardy

2008-04-10 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

I'm on UbuntuStudio with a fresh install from the Hardy Beta release.
All packages are up to date.

When I plug my camera in and turn it on first nothing happened. I then
realized I had to input the import behavior manually. This should not
occur if you are deciding on using f-spot as a default manager. (Issue
#1)

Importing works after and the importing on insert works after entering
the command. However after using the command (f-spot -i %m) for the
auto-import, I still have to select the camera as the input source.
Perhaps there is a better command but the %m should select the camera as
the source. (Issue #2)

However, my camera never shows up on the Places menu, is not mounted on
the Desktop, the "Computer" section, and does not seem to be accessible
through Nautilus. The issue is that f-spot (unlink gthumb) does not have
an option to delete imported pictures from the camera. It should be
accessible through Nautilus anyway, but this is the specific problem.
(Issue #3)

Please let me know what other info I can post.

Here is my lsusb output.

[Bug 215762] [NEW] Packages in main Ubuntu not in UbuntuStudio

2008-04-11 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

I have found that many packages that are installed in a normal Ubuntu
installation are not installed by a UbuntuStudio installation.

The ones I have found are: Transmission, Vinagre, Tomboy, Tracker, the
Terminal Server Client, Audio CD Extractor, and RhythmBox. I also think
that only OpenOffice Writer was installed- can't remember if I installed
the others myself or not. But now that I look at the dependencies, there
are no OpenOffice apps there

I was wondering what the rational for not putting in these packages
was

[Bug 181242] Re: [Hardy]HP printer is not detected properly by HPLIP

2008-04-03 Thread Jon Arnold
The rules file mentioned above is identical to the one I have. I'm using
a PSC 1400. I have the latest version of HPLIP.

My printer is detected and can print but none of the supply details or
functions. hp-info gives
"error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12):
hp:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN564B50PH04BN
error: Error opening device (Device not found). Exiting."

The toolbox GUI gives a "Device communication error" code 5012.

All of this worked fine in Gutsy...

[Bug 271112] [NEW] nautilus claims hard drives are Picture CDs

2008-09-16 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If a hard drive has a folder named "Pictures" in it's base directory,
nautilus has a bar that says "These files are on a Picture CD," and
offers to open F-Spot.

The hard drive that I have to test is formatted with ext-3. I can
provide more information if it is relevant.

[Bug 220869] Re: X crashes after installing fpit driver in Hardy

2008-09-07 Thread Jon Arnold
If you visit the forums I have posted a compiled version of the driver.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4843936&postcount=9

You can install it from the repos so that Hardy "sees" the driver, and
then replace the file with that one.

Also, it seems to be fixed in Intrepid, as they are using a newer
version of the driver and Xorg. I don't know exactly how the versions
will work with an LTS, but it seems like they're not going to update it
on Hardy...

[Bug 842294] [NEW] Thumbnailer config not updated for Gnome 3

2011-09-05 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Apparently Gnome 3 doesn't use gconf for thumbnailers any more, so ufraw
needs to be updated to use the new system.

I created the attached file that goes in /usr/share/thumbnailers/ but
I'm not sure about the TryExec line so it should be looked at. I can't
test all the mime-types, but it seems to work for Nikon NEFs, so it
should work for the rest. Hopefully, someone can incorporate this into
the package.

[Bug 459535] [NEW] Can't login: need new SVN snapshot

2009-10-23 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkgmail

Checkgmail does not work currently in Karmic. It gives an authorization
error and continually prompts the user for a password.

Running "checkgmail -update" grabs the latest SVN and installs it,
solving the problem, so Karmic needs to package one of these snapshots.

The problem is discussed on the forums at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1283708

[Bug 565540] Re: Unmet dependencies in Lucid

2010-05-09 Thread Jon Arnold
Robert, your DEB worked for me in getting it up and running.

My question is now a configuration one, which is off the bug topic, but
best for here. My old values don't work now for the X axis. When I move
the pen from left to right, the cursor gets increasingly far away from
the pen, essentially accelerating (in terms of distance) to the right.
Any ideas? I tried changing the MaximumX value but it didn't change
anything.

[Bug 565540] Re: Unmet dependencies in Lucid

2010-05-09 Thread Jon Arnold
Your last part intrigued me. It is very odd because the values seem to
affect each other. So, I tinkered with mine.

I use a 1280x768 resolution. My old MaxX,MaxY values were 12550,7650. So
I switched them, making it 7650,12550 and the motion on the X-axis
DEcelerated in the same way that the X Accelerated before, making only
~50 of the vertical screen usable. Very odd

Robert's package should work. All I did before was patch it with fixes
from the Xorg GIT, which the Debian GIT seems to have already done.

Perhaps as a fix to the bug in the official repos, a package should
actually be released from the Debian GIT?

[Bug 1934160] [NEW] Include path picker wants a file instead of a folder

2021-06-30 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

I'm on Ubuntu Studio 21.04 with KDE Plasma 5.21.4 and Frescobaldi 3.1.3
from the repos.

When I go to the Preferences, under Lilypond Preferences, I tried to add
a folder to the include path. When I click Add, the dialog seems to be
looking for a file rather than a folder. The heading of the dialog says
Open File, and it won't let me click Open in any folder. No files show
up within my folders in the dialog even the Filter is set to All Files.

It should let me choose a folder to add to the include list.

[Bug 345192] Re: Ekiga doesn't recognize webcam with non-UTF chars

2009-03-28 Thread Jon Arnold
I'm having difficulty building after applying your patch because
pbuilder is having trouble gathering the python libraries, and I can't
use apt-get build-dep because it's complaining it can't find a certain
package. I will recheck in a couple of days. If you can upload a deb
with your patched version, I would be glad to test it.

I'm not sure how to find out what kind of encoding my system is using.

[Bug 299695] Re: [i915GM] Altering xorg.conf causes screen flickering on shutdown

2009-03-12 Thread Jon Arnold
Hi Bryce,

I've just retested this on Jaunty. I think that maybe the problem is
actually the fpit module. I am thinking this because I had the server
layout section and the fpit section in my xorg.conf before I actually
had the fpit module installed because the Ubuntu package was broken. The
flickering did not occur. Today, I fixed the fpit package and installed
it, and now I experience the problem again. It hasn't prevented my
shutdown (yet), it just doesn't shutdown the X system cleanly.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log.old, although I don't see
anything helpful on the log...

[Bug 345192] [NEW] Ekiga doesn't recognize webcam with non-UTF chars

2009-03-18 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Ekiga is not recognising my webcam (Microsoft NX-6000), and I believe it is
caused by the "registered" symbol in the device name. I am attaching
screenshots. In 'character.png' you can see the culprit character in the device
name. When I run Ekiga in the terminal I get errors that refer to invalid UTF
characters. The first comes up when I open the preferences dialog: I receive
many instances of "(ekiga:6579): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed
to pango_layout_set_text()
." Then I go to Video > Devices and select the camera as a video device. Each
action generates more of the Pango warnings, but selecting the camera also
generates a "(ekiga:6579): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_engine_set_string:
assertion `g_utf8_validate (val, -1, NULL)' failed." Except for this terminal
message I select the camera seemingly without failing, and I close the
preferences dialog. However, when I try to display the camera on the call pane,
the program tries to fall back to one another one of my video devices (a TV
card), which fails and displays the moving logo.

Pressing "Detect Devices" in the video devices dialog makes the camera
disappear from the device list as seen in 'devices.png.'

One individual reported having seemingly similar problems with the same
camera model (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1025676) on
December 30, 2008, but has not responded yet to my recent attempt to
confirm my specific errors.

So it seems like this specific character is the issue to me. So, in the
meantime is there a way to rename the device so that it works in Ekiga
until the bug is fixed? I also figure that this is probably an upstream
issue. Please let me know if I can do anymore testing.

A good 'ol Google search yielded possibly renaming it with a udev rule, but I'm
not exactly sure how to make udev single out the webcam. I'll fiddle with it.

Also, I forgot to mention that the camera worked under Windows on the

[Bug 215234] Re: PowerShot A620 Issues in Hardy

2009-02-11 Thread Jon Arnold
Hi Daniel- I have an update on this for Jaunty. I have a completely up-
to-date system as of Feb 11, 2009 19:50 EST.

When I plug in my camera, it appears on the Desktop three times. One is
the root directory of the camera containing two folders
("store_00010001" and "store_8001"), then the other two are each of
these stores. Also, somehow some are staying and living in my places
menu and the "Computer" view in Nautilus. One seems to stay every on-off
cycle with the camera.

I also get three pop-ups when I plug in the camera. Two of these are
automount pop-ups asking what I want to do with the camera, one for each
Store folder. The other says "Unable to mount Canon, Inc. Powershot A620
(PTP mode)" (new line) "Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock
the device". When I click OK in either automount pop-up to open in
F-spot, it brings up a camera selection window. I have two choices
"Canon PowerShot A620 (PTP mode)" on port "usb:" and with port
"usb:002,008". If I click either one I get a "Could not lock the device"
error from F-spot.

So, no matter what I do, I can't seem to import via F-spot with the
camera. If I use just the memory card in a reader it works fine.
Grabbing photos manually works, but the mounting seems sloppy. Please
let me know what further testing I can do and if I need to file a new
bug.

[Bug 296582] Re: ALSA does not recognize device in Skype

2008-11-11 Thread Jon Arnold
I forgot to switch the whole system to pulse, just Skype.
Regardless, switching the whole system to pulse is not a fix. Especially when
so many programs have problems with pulse, like Audacity.

I apologize- it seems my pulse output master was muted When I
unmuted it in volume control everything worked the same. Still this not
really a fix for the package...

[Bug 299695] [NEW] [regression] Altering xorg.conf causes screen flickering on shutdown

2008-11-18 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On an upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid and on a clean installation of
Intrepid, when I have the server layout section in my xorg.conf, there
is screen flickering when I shutdown my computer. Sometimes this
prevents the shutdown process, and I have to use the power button.

The flickering is characterized by colored lines on the scree at first,
and if it gets to the Ubuntu progress bar, this is duplicated across the
screen with scanlines.

I have to have xorg manually configured because of my Finepoint tablet,
which does not work with the new HAL fdi system.

This configuration worked fine on Hardy. I'm on a Gateway cx2619, which
uses the Intel 915GM chipset.

[Bug 517713] [NEW] Unmet Dependencies

2010-02-05 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: frescobaldi

In Lucid, when I try to install frescobaldi I get the following output:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
frescobaldi: Depends: python-kde4 (>= 4:4.0.2) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Broken packages

Also,
  python-kde4: Depends: python-qt4 (< 4.7.0-0ubuntu1+~) but 4.7.0-2ubuntu1 is
to be installed
   Depends: python-sip4 (< 4.10.0-0ubuntu1+~) but 4.10.0-2ubuntu1
is to be installed

I assume this is part of some transition, but I just wanted to flag this
application.

Perhaps the one on line 417 is the problem with the graphical version?

[Bug 404219] Re: Touchpad Tap Clicking Broken (scrolling also)

I have to agree with Max. Tap-to-click is "confusing behavior?" It is
confusing to try to tap your touchpad, have it not click, be new to the
operating system and not know where to look to change the setting. This
would be a huge "papercut" if you ask me.

[Bug 427464] [NEW] Can't add to startup applications

2009-09-10 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

When I try add a script (it's basically a sleep & conky script) to the
gnome-session-properties dialog, it seems to add successfully, but it is
not retained when I reopen the dialog, and the script is not initiated
on start-up. I also tried simply adding a conky command and this did not

[Bug 418809] [NEW] Lock Version not heeded in partial upgrade.

2009-08-25 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Don't think this is related to bug #13408, because I only experience
this on partial upgrades.

Steps:
1) Lock a PPA version of a package (Frescobaldi) in synaptic, so that it does
not install the Ubuntu repository version. (FYI, the repo version has different
dependencies that I don't want).
2) On normal updates, the update-manager will now ignore that package.
3) If some other package triggers a partial upgrade, update-manager will try to
upgrade frescobaldi along with its dependencies, forcing me to uninstall it, do
the partial upgrade, force the version I want to reinstall, and then lock it
back every time there's a partial upgrade.

Partial upgrades should listen to the version lock as well, in my
opinion.

I'm on Karmic, with update-manager version 1:0.124.8

2009-06-30 Thread Jon Arnold
Sorry, but I'm not sure this is fixed. If you look at the build from
2009-06-08, no -dev package was produced:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/kdebase/4:4.2.90-0ubuntu1

I still get this:
#sudo apt-get install kdebase-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package kdebase-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  libkonqsidebarplugin4-dev kdelibs4-dev
E: Package kdebase-dev has no installation candidate

[Bug 415137] [NEW] Should depend on kdebase-bin not kdebase

2009-08-17 Thread Jon Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: frescobaldi

I help maintain the frescobaldi package on a team PPA. I am very glad to
see that this is now in the repos, but when Ubuntu asked me to upgrade
from our PPA version to the repo it tried to install 14 new packages
because of this dependency. Since I use GNOME as my DE, many of these
packages are quite useless and I do not want them installed. I can tell
you that functionality is fine with the kdebase-bin dependency. Here's
the list of apps that get pulled in, and you will see that for a GNOME
user, they make for enough useless bloat to be annoying.

dolphin
kappfinder
kdebase
kdebase-workspace-libs4+5
kdepasswd
kfind
konqueror
konqueror-nsplugins
konsole
kwrite
libkonq5
libkonq5-templates
libkonqsidebarplugin4
plasma-widget-folderview

It's only 4.2 MB of downloads, but it is enough unneeded applications
that I am putting off the upgrade.

Also, we used to do a frescobaldi-data package with the files from
usr/share/applications, usr/share/icons, and usr/share/kde4. So, that is
a possibility if the packager wants to do that... Since this is an
import from debian, perhaps this should be forwarded.

** Affects: frescobaldi (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 402795] Re: windows option not shown

2009-07-23 Thread Jon Arnold
That command also fixed it for me. I backed up the fresh configuration
from the installer (grub.cfg.old) and compared it to the one after
running 'sudo update-grub2' (grub.cfg.new) and the command seemed to
have added my Windows partition the "os-proper section" as well as
having it in the "otheros" section. I have attached the two cfg files.

So, the command definitely works as a workaround (should probably be
posted on the Alpha 3 release notes), and the behavior could possibly be
implemented into the installer.
