I've just marked as a duplicate of #477644. I think this is correct -
certainly the symptoms are the same for both reports.

That bug has a workaround which works for me:

qpdf --decrypt input.pdf output.pdf

Just a hint for anyone trying this out without enabling the whole of
maverick-proposed: Initially I installed the new "evolution" and

"libevolution" and "evolution-plugins" and now it works.

[Bug 512153] Re: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI not working

2010-01-28 Thread Jon Leighton
These lines are significant:

[8.857015] rt61pci :00:06.0: enabling device ( -> 0002)
[8.857029] rt61pci :00:06.0: can't find IRQ for PCI INT A; please try
using pci=biosirq
[8.857040] rt61pci :00:06.0: setting latency timer to 64

I've tried with pci=biosirq and various other boot options, to no avail.
I've tried earlier versions of Ubuntu (9.04 and 8.10), and they have the
same problem. I tried compiling the driver supplied by RaLink - it won't
compile on 9.10, but I compiled it for 8.10 and it still had the
problem. I've also tried using ndiswrapper, but it reports the same IRQ
problem.

Now I've run out of ideas so I am going to have to reluctantly reinstall
windows back on the laptop. It's a shame there has been no response
here. If you'd like more information perhaps I can try things with a
live cd to see if they work.

[Bug 512153] [NEW] RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI not working

2010-01-24 Thread Jon Leighton
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

I have just installed Ubuntu 2009.10 on my girlfriends Packard Bell
Easynote R1935, and the wireless card is not working. lspci lists it as
"RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI". I can see there is a driver named
rt61pci being loaded, but it appears not to work. The interface is not
listed by ifconfig.

I have faffed around for ages trying to compile the driver from RaLink's
website but can't get that to work. Presumably it is supposed to be
supported as the driver is included by default, so hopefully someone
here can help.

Thanks

Same here.

Recently (last 2 days or less) I have experienced other slow performance
in other areas, which might be related:

* Viewing translucent overlays in a browser (example:

* Scrolling web pages with a fixed background image (example:
http://thecoalhole.org/)
* Deleting emails/changing folders in evolution (seems to be the same as

Do other people experience these issues? Are there any workarounds?

[Bug 149423] Microphone not detected on Dell Vostro 1500

2007-10-05 Thread Jon Leighton
Public bug reported:

I am on Gutsy with a Dell Vostro 1500 and my microphone does not work at
all. The microphone was not actually being detected by ALSA (I couldn't
set it as an input source in gnome-volume-control), but I found this
bug: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=203 and
followed the workaround to put "options snd-hda-intel model=ref" in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. This resulted in the microphone being
detected (I could set it as the input source) but there were two issues:

* When I plugged external speaker in, sound would continue to play on the
laptop's internal speakers
* I still can't manage to record any sound with the microphone (this might be
because I don't have it configured correctly but I have played around with lots
of different settings)

Incidentally, I had to upgrade to alsa-driver-1.0.15rc3 in order to get
my sound to work (see bug #131133), but I'm pretty sure this is also an
issue in the Gutsy packaged version of alsa-driver.

Any work around or fix for this would be really appreciated. Thanks.

[Bug 147230] Workspace switching via touchpad works badly

2007-09-30 Thread Jon Leighton
Public bug reported:

With desktop effects enabled I can switch to a different workspace by
scrolling my mouse wheel when on the desktop - each "click" of the mouse
wheel goes to a new workspace, in a continuous circle. When using my
touchpad, touching the right hand side of it emulates a mouse wheel. The
difference is that the touchpad's "mouse wheel" doesn't have "clicks".
This means that when I switch workspace, it is very difficult to go to
exactly the one I want using the touchpad as it will often detect
multiple "clicks" and I can end up back on the one I was on.

One way to alleviate this might be to no switch workspaces in a circle,
but to only switch up to the last one in one direction - to get back
from that the user would have to scroll the other way. This would solve
my problem was I only have two workspaces, but if a user had four
workspaces it would still be difficult to get to numbers 2 and 3. Maybe
the touchpad just needs to be less sensitive?

Sound was broken for me on a Vostro 1500. Installing alsa-
driver-1.0.15rc3 fixed it. Yay :)

[Bug 140839] Re: Cannot increase display brightness with hotkeys

2007-09-27 Thread Jon Leighton
Me too with a Dell Vostro 1500. I've found a workaround by going to
System > Preferences > Power Management and moving the brightness
slider, which then "resets" the brightness so I can move the slider to
my desired brightness level.

I've had this too - at least with the GNOME terminal. With the "extra"
desktop effects enabled, the "maximised" GNOME terminal will continually
wobble as if it has just been maximised.

[Bug 127561] usplash crash

2007-07-22 Thread Jon Leighton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

I have been having problems with usplash - I don't get a see a
bootsplash on start up at all, just a black screen, although the system
does boot successfully.

I noticed this in the log files:

apport (pid 22276) Sun Jul 22 15:47:28 2007: executable: /sbin/usplash (command
line "/sbin/usplash -c -x 1280 -y 1024")
apport (pid 22276) Sun Jul 22 15:47:28 2007: apport: report
/var/crash/_sbin_usplash.0.crash already exists and unseen, doing nothing to
avoid disk usage DoS

I will attach the crash report.

Incidentally, the framebuffer was all messed up until I added vga=773 to
the kernel options. I don't know if that's related.

[Bug 104476] Re: [EDGY] Firefox Crashed [@ js_GetScriptLineExtent]

2007-04-08 Thread Jon Leighton
It's not really reproducible. I have been experiencing several Firefox
crashes recently so it's hard to pinpoint what caused it, but I think
this one may be related to the Firebug extension as I think I
experienced less crashes when I disabled the extension.

I have Firefox set to always keep the tab bar visible, and when I have
only one tag open and want to get rid of it (and therefore go to my home
page of about:blank) I will middle click it. This is what I did and the
browser froze and then eventually crashed.

[Bug 96023] Re: Firefox crash

2007-03-25 Thread Jon Leighton
I can't reproduce it every time but it has happened before. Basically I
browse for a bit, open a page with a flash movie in it. When the movie
is loading the entire browser crashes. Again, this only happens
intermittently; I can re-open Firefox, restore the session, and
everything's fine.

I've been trying to get a backtrace for a bug which keeps crashing my
Firefox whenever the Firebug extension is enabled. However I got home
today to see Firefox had crashed. I don't think this is a same crash as
it appears to be related to SSL or something, but I will attach the

[Bug 81887] CinePaint uses incompatible dcraw arguments

2007-01-27 Thread Jon Leighton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cinepaint

I installed the version of CinePaint in edgy-proposed (see bug #65457) -
I wanted to try out it's RAW photo editing capabilities. Unfortunately
it seems to call dcraw with incompatible arguments. I guess this is
probably a version incompatibility between the dcraw version in edgy and
the version assumed by CinePaint 0.20?

Here is cinepaint's command line output:

/usr/lib/cinepaint/0.20-1/plug-ins/rawphoto
dcraw -i '/home/turnip/Photos/2007/1/25/img_2063.cr2'
/home/turnip/Photos/2007/1/25/img_2063.cr2 is a Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL image.
dcraw -4 -v -c -w -m -b 1.00 -r 1.00 -l 1.00
'/home/turnip/Photos/2007/1/25/img_2063.cr2'

[Bug 6602] Re: Workaround for USB digital camera photo download problems

2006-10-28 Thread Jon Leighton
I am affected by this bug. I have a Canon EOS 400D. Tormod Volden's fix
works for me, but not always. It seems I can connect to the camera and
import photos (using F-Spot) initially, but if I try to do a second
import I get the error. A workaround for this is to turn the camera off
and on again, effectively resetting the connection.

Let me know if I can provide any info.
