[Bug 567512] Re: uinput broken for at least Mac mini

2010-09-08 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Thanks for the pointer Mario.

I have patched and tested the latest lirc packages from lucid. I have
uploaded a bzr branch to Launchpad and requested a merge to lucid-
proposed. The debdiff is also attached.

For the needs of the SRU:

- Impact of this bug: This bug renders the --uinput of lirc useless.
This options allows remote controls to input commands like key strokes
(as you would with a multimedia keyboard with play, next/previous,
volume up/down, etc buttons). This is obviously a very simple and
attractive way to use a remote control with Ubuntu, and is recommended
in many tutorials (including on help.ubuntu.com). Currently, in lucid,
the buttons pressed on the remote have no effect (until the lircd daemon
is stopped or restarted).

- Nominating for SRU, fulfills: (1) have an obviously safe patch (it
only concerns the --uinput which is currently non-functional, and is
tested by upstream and other distros) and (2) affect an application
rather than critical infrastructure packages

- My proposed patch simply includes a patch from upstream (git commit
d987ce9c68239f637dddb9de9f9668f6e8f9fc1d) to fix this problem. It is
included in the 0.8.7~pre3-0ubuntu1 version in maverick, which works
fine.

TEST CASE: A supported remote control and IR receiver are required.
Install the lirc package. Configure /etc/lirc/lircd.conf for your remote, if
not already done during package installation (or include a preset from
/usr/share/lirc/remotes/). Ensure your remote button presses are detected when
running irw. Edit /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and set these keys:
REMOTE_MODULES=uinput
REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS=--uinput
Restart lirc.
Start rhythmbox and enable the lirc module. Restart rhythmbox and start
playing a song.
Press pause key on the remote and notice that rhythmbox doesn't take any notice.
Stop lirc, and see that rhythmbox then pauses the song.

I see no regression potential for this patch, as it only affects users
running lirc with the --uinput option, which is currently non-functional
with an up-to-date Ubuntu lucid.

** Patch added: Debdiff to fix this bug in lucid

[Bug 630984] [NEW] Dead pixel test: key presses don't change color

2010-09-05 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkbox

On Maverick 10.10 beta, the System Testing tool has a test with this
description:
Dead pixel check procedure:
1.- Select Test to display a single color in full screen mode
2.- Check that all pixels are the same color
3.- Press any key and repeat the check for another color (red, green, blue,
white and black)

When I click Test, the screen goes completely red, however pressing
keys does not make that change. Clicking the mouse button does.

This should either be reworded, or the keyboard should be recognised.

Although I doubt it, I suppose this could be related to my hardware. I'm
running on a 2007 Apple iMac 20 (iMac7,1 model), using a standard
105-key PC keyboard connected via USB (which works fine otherwise).

[Bug 567512] Re: uinput broken for at least Mac mini

2010-09-05 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Having just tested Maverick, I will note that this bug is fixed there
(the version of lirc has been bumped to include the fix from the Gentoo
bug report mentioned or something similar).

Is there any reason why this could not be patched and included as an
update in Lucid? I'm willing to do the work, if someone points the way
for me.

[Bug 278784] Re: openvpn configuration with token (pkcs11 provider) blocks the boot

2008-10-07 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Hi Thierry,

Booting with the token already inserted does not work. It is a USB
token, so maybe some part of the USB system is not yet up at that point
of the boot.

I'm not sure about the workaround. I can see it leading to confusion:
why do some configurations autostart and not others?. However, it
would definitely avoid the problem at hand, of course. Ideally, such
configurations should be autostarted when a user is logged in, and can
use a management interface.

Let me know if you go with a workaround based on pkcs11-id, and I will
test it.

[Bug 278784] [NEW] openvpn configuration with token (pkcs11 provider) blocks the boot

2008-10-05 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openvpn

After updating from Hardy to Intrepid, it seems openvpn is automatically
launched on boot, and attemps to open all connections describes in
/etc/openvpn/*.conf files. My exact version of OpenVPN here is
2.1~rc9-3ubuntu2.

This causes a problem when using PKCS11 provider options in a
configuration file: the boot is interrupted and in text mode a request
to insert the token is displayed, like this:

8--
NEED-OK|token-insertion-request|Please insert OpenSC Card (User PIN) token:
8--

Despite trying all usual escape commands (escape, ctrl+C, ctrl+Z, etc),
and actually inserting the token (nothing happened, it is on a USB
connection), this completely blocked the boot. I had to restart and then
boot in recovery mode and rename my file to avoid the automatic
connection.

I feel that launching connections automatically is not the problem -
that's a nice feature :) However, I would expect at least to be able to
cancel the connection opening, or delay this error message until a user
has logged in.

If any further info can help, my config is waiting for your requests.

[Bug 127356] gnome-language-selector should warn that a reboot is necessary after changing default system language

2007-07-21 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-selector

I'm using latest version of language-selector (0.2.6). When I change the
default language using gnome-language-tool, the change takes effect, but
only after a restart : gdm is in the new language, as is my user
account.

I spent some time wondering why this didn't take effect immediatly, even
after logging out, and restarting X. I feel that gnome-language-selector
should display a warning message that one has to reboot for changes to
take effect. Or, if this is not actually necessary, changes should just
take effect :-)

[Bug 108160] Localised update-manager requires reinstall of language pack after upgrading to Feisty

2007-04-20 Thread Jonathan Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

After upgrading from Edgy to Feisty (via apt-get dist-upgrade), with all
of my system in French (since the first install) the update-manager is
not translated. All other programs are in French. I have only tested
French and don't know if this is the case for other languages.

Doing apt-get install --reinstall language-pack-fr-base solves the
