[Bug 1691996] Re: DNS and search domain is not pushed to systemd-resolved sometimes

2017-05-23 Thread Jonathan Harker
The DNS for the tun0 of my OpenVPN connection completely fails. There's nothing
in systemd-resolve --status or /var/run/resolv.conf or /etc or any of the other
usual places; I don't have time to go digging so I shove stuff in /etc/hosts
for now.
Pretty useless state of affairs, all told...

[Bug 1243642] Re: .Xmodmap not automatically loaded on start

2015-04-23 Thread Jonathan Harker
I'm seeing the same behaviour after an upgrade from Precise to Trusty,
and it is disheartening to see that the bug was reported during an
upgrade between intermediate versions with very little traction. I've
added logic to my shell rc script to run xmodmap when I log in, but this
does not address the case where I resume, so I still need to manually
run xmodmap somewhat regularly.

[Bug 1185547] Re: Removing package fails to remove user

2013-05-29 Thread Jonathan Harker
Ah, I had no idea that it mattered if the user had a system id. It's
very possible that my configuration management mucked about with the
user id (or maybe even created the user instead of the package creating
the user).

Thanks for clearing up the source of the error.

[Bug 1185547] [NEW] Removing package fails to remove user

2013-05-29 Thread Jonathan Harker
Public bug reported:

When purging the apt-cacher-ng package, the apt-cacher-ng user is not
removed from the system. This causes reinstalls to fail because the apt-
cacher-ng user already exists. The package should remove the user when
being purged.

Workaround:
After uninstalling, run the command:
sudo userdel apt-cacher-ng
Once the user is removed, the package can be installed again.

[Bug 1094888] Re: GIMP: Could not mount Canon Digital Camera

I have this problem too, but the problem isn't really in gimp, it's in
gphoto2 (or possibly deeper, in the USB stack). This will get you some
diagnostics:

[Bug 1009536] Re: Ubuntu 12.04/7.0.24/ Seti@home

2012-08-21 Thread Jonathan Harker
I disagree. The bug description states:

The Boinc package (7.0.24precise1) in the 12.04 Ubuntu repository
doesn't work for seti@home, it just produces computation errors. The
package needs to be changed, perhaps to Debians SID 7.0.27, or
backported from Quantal if that package has been confirmed to be in good
working order. Currently, 12.04/seti@home and lhc@home users are still
unable to run Boinc without using the PPA alternatives.

Since seti@home still produces computation errors and still doesn't run,
then this is the same bug, and it is still not fixed. If the bug is
still present, then it doesn't matter why, or what caused it, it's still
the same bug, and it still needs fixing.

2012-08-21 Thread Jonathan Harker
This bug is essentially this: the Boinc package in the 12.04 Ubuntu
repository doesn't work for seti@home, it produces computation errors.

This is still the case.

It does NOT matter what the underlying issue is. The suggested fix,
update it to 7.0.27, was implemented and still does not completely fix
the bug, which is that it produces computation errors.

Just because the fix that was suggested, implemented and released did
not completely fix the problem, does not somehow transform this into a
different bug. It just means that the fix did not completely address the
root cause(s). Creating different bugs for different causes is just
needless duplication of effort.

If you really think I should be commenting on a different bug, then by
all means direct me to the right one.

[Bug 1009536] Re: Ubuntu 12.04/7.0.24/ Seti@home

2012-08-20 Thread Jonathan Harker
Hi there,
I am currently running a new installed 12.04 LTS, with the following packages:

dpkg -l|grep boinc
ii boinc 7.0.27+dfsg-5ubuntu0.12.04.1
metapackage for the BOINC client and the manager
ii boinc-app-seti 5.13+cvs20060510-7ubuntu1
SETI@home application for the BOINC client
ii boinc-client 7.0.27+dfsg-5ubuntu0.12.04.1
core client for the BOINC distributed computing infrastructure
ii boinc-dev 7.0.27+dfsg-5ubuntu0.12.04.1
development files to build applications for BOINC projects
ii boinc-manager 7.0.27+dfsg-5ubuntu0.12.04.1
GUI to control and monitor the BOINC core client
ii boinc-nvidia-cuda 7.0.27+dfsg-5ubuntu0.12.04.1
metapackage for CUDA-savvy BOINC client and manager

With the following result, as recorded by SETI@Home here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=2570285385

core_client_version7.0.27/core_client_version

I'm not sure where to post this, since everything seems to be a dup of

[Bug 730159] Re: ffmpeg library configuration mismatch

2011-10-31 Thread Jonathan Harker
The problem is that ffmpeg is spewing nearly a page-full of spurious
error messages to the screen every time it is run, and/or that ffmpeg is
mis-configured at build-time, and the library mismatch may be causing
very difficult to find glitches or artefacts, bugs, or even outright
crashes and protection faults.

If maintainers are confident that the configuration mismatch has no
effect, there should be a patch to cmdutils.c to suppress the output in
the PRINT_LIB_INFO macro. IMO arguments about whether upstream are being
overly cautious, insufficiently clever about their library detection, or
whatever, aren't at issue here (I have no opinion on it).

Having to scroll through nearly a page of spurious warnings is tedious.

[Bug 586790] Re: Typo in --help of apt-add-repository

2010-08-10 Thread Jonathan Harker
Whilst there is a man page at /debian/manpages/add-apt-repository.1 the
documentation in the script itself is poor, so I wrote a patch. It is
worth noting that the man page only works if you go

man add-apt-repository

but not

man apt-add-repository

Since both names work from the command-line, and sources of information
on the web seem to be evenly quoting either, the man page should really
also work with the latter invocation as well as the former. This is
really only a minor oversight.

** Patch added: Fleshes out the -h help text in the add-apt-repository script.

[Bug 334082] Re: Most mp3 files listed with Unknown length

2010-04-14 Thread Jonathan Harker
I have this problem too, but I've found something interesting which may
help figure out what's going on. Steps to reproduce:

1. Find an affected song in the collection, where the duration is Unknown in
the Time column.
2. Right-click, choose Properties.
3. Modify at least one of the tags (e.g. Title, Artist, Album, etc.) so that
Rhythmbox is forced to write it to the song file.
4. Click close - Rhythmbox will write the tags, and in doing so, re-calculate
the duration correctly.
5. Play the song. You may need to start playing another song first, then play
the modified one.
6. Seeking should now work correctly.

There are a few possibilities and speculations:

1. The tags in the file are corrupt, and Rhythmbox is rewriting the tag header
correctly, which allows it to correctly calculate the song length. This is
unlikely however, since I've been quite meticulous with my tag curation in
Amarok 1.4 and Ex Falso over the past few years.
2. Because the songs were not imported into the collection using Rhythmbox
(they were simply indexed from a collection managed by Amarok 1.4), the
indexing may not have been doing the duration calculation correctly, or at all,
for some files.

I have tested this on files that I know beforehand have valid ID3v2 tags
and the durations and seeking works correctly in Amarok 1.4

here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1204619 I'll try out the proposed
solution and see what happens. My experience of this bug is that it does not
seem to be format-related, where I have observed flac files sometimes doing the
same thing, and sometimes behaving correctly. I need to do more testing because
I have two separate instances at home and at work and haven't had time to get
to the bottom of the pattern (if any).

[Bug 474948] Re: Missing dependency libx264.so.65 on amd64 platform

2010-01-18 Thread Jonathan Harker
The ldd outputs are completely different - see attachment. How can this
be when the md5sum on /usr/bin/ffmpeg and /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52 are
the same?

[Bug 491876] Re: ffmpeg segfault regression - working cli encode in jaunty now broken in karmic

2010-01-17 Thread Jonathan Harker
Actually, when I remove the symbolic link that I added a few months ago
(to get video playback working, and I had forgotten about):

/usr/lib/libx264.so.65 -- /usr/lib/libx264.so.67

I get the error that I first got months ago:

ffmpeg: error while loading shared libraries: libx264.so.65: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

It seems that .65 is not installed by the karmic libx264 or libavcodec
packages, yet ffmpeg still tries to link to it. Doing your own symbolic
link to the .67 object (as above) works for playback, but evidently not
encoding. So this bug becomes why is ffmpeg pointing to the wrong
version of libx264 - which is a duplicate of Bug #474948 (since I'm
also running on the amd64 platform)

Cheers, J

2010-01-17 Thread Jonathan Harker
Specifically, when I symlink 65 to 67 to try a work-around, ffmpeg
segfaults, so the reason becomes ffmpeg (or is it libavcodec-extras) is
pointing to libx264-65 which is the wrong version, as karmic is
libx264-67.

[Bug 474948] Re: Missing dependency libx264.so.65 on amd64 platform

2010-01-17 Thread Jonathan Harker
Hi Reinhard,
Interesting. Here are the packages I have (on the original amd64 machine I
reported from):

$ dpkg -l|grep ffmpeg
ii ffmpeg 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2
  multimedia player, server and encoder
ii ffmpeg2theora 0.24-2build1
  Theora video encoder using ffmpeg
ii ffmpegthumbnailer 1.5.4-1build1
  fast and lightweight video thumbnailer
ii gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.9-1
  FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer
ii libavcodec-extra-524:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg codec library
ii libavdevice-extra-52 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg device handling library
ii libavfilter-extra-04:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg video filtering library
ii libavformat-extra-52 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg file format library
ii libavutil-extra-49 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg utility library
ii libffmpegthumbnailer3 1.5.4-1build1
  the ffmpegthumbnailer library
ii libpostproc-extra-51 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg video postprocessing library
ii libswscale-extra-0 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
  ffmpeg video scaling library
ii libxine1-ffmpeg1.1.16.3-0ubuntu4
  MPEG-related plugins for libxine1

I cannot reproduce this on my work amd64 machine, or my i386 karmic
laptop, but these were freshly installed with karmic, so I wonder if
something went horribly wrong somewhere in the jaunty-karmic upgrade?

$ md5sum /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52.20.0

[Bug 491876] Re: ffmpeg segfault regression - working cli encode in jaunty now broken in karmic

2010-01-02 Thread Jonathan Harker
Hi,
Thanks for investigating - here's my currently installed relevant packages
(excluding debugsym packages):
ffmpeg 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2
libavcodec-extra-52 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
libavdevice-extra-524:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
libavfilter-extra-0 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
libavformat-extra-524:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
libavutil-extra-49 4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3
libx264-67 1:0.svn20090621+git364d7d-0ubuntu2
x2641:0.svn20090621+git364d7d-0ubuntu2

I did have some old medibuntu packages installed that I thought I had
got rid of - these are now removed. I still get my segfault error. None
of the provided presets do exactly what I want, which is why I'm
specifying things on the cli. Still, I'm trying this as well:

ffmpeg -i Baraka.vc1 -vcodec libx264 -vpre normal -crf 21 Baraka.mkv

Which also seg faults.

[Bug 426130] Re: Karmic freezes when using Atheros-AR928X on Asus X73S Notebook

2009-12-05 Thread Jonathan Harker
I have the same problem, SiS 671MX - based ASUS laptop. Not sure if the
problem is the kernel, the Atheros AR928X wireless, or network-manager,
but it's the same problem. Kernel will hang after a few minutes of
usage. Tellingly, /var/log/syslog is full of

^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^...@^@^@

which demarks points where the laptop had to be powered off - nothing
else worked, not even ALT+PrtScn+R

Laptop has the same lspci as the first poster, except the VGA controller
is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series.

I don't consider using wicd (whatever that is) a fix as this is broken
for people using this combination of hardware on a default install of
karmic kernel wireless driver and network-manager, so can someone PLEASE
escalate this bug?

Cheers, J

2009-12-03 Thread Jonathan Harker
These don't work either:

ffmpeg -i Baraka.vc1 -vcodec libx264 -crf 21 Baraka.mkv
ffmpeg -i ../FOTREE1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB -vcodec libx264 -crf 21 Baraka.mkv
ffmpeg -i ../FOTREE1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB -vcodec libtheora Baraka.ogg

Which means it's not the source format (I've tried many, even crummy
MPEG1 files), the advanced x264 options, the x264 encoding, or even the
Matroska container output.

2009-11-01 Thread Jonathan Harker
I have encountered this upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic. The dist-
upgrade has stalled with 285 packages still to go, because when setting
up mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.37-1ubuntu5) it attempts to restart the mysql
service. MySQL now consistently fails at start (/etc/init.d/mysql start)
as above, because it can't find the mysql.plugins table. MySQL helpfully
suggests that I run mysql_upgrade, which fails because it cannot connect
to the MySQL service that it expects to be up and running. The
instructions at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysql-
upgrade.html don't work either, because mysql_check (et al.) also expect

[Bug 399256] [NEW] Deprecation warnings around import sets when importing networkx

Public bug reported:

I have a couple of patches to fix this - see attached. No point fixing
upstream as they're up to 0.99 version now. In the meantime, this should
fix warnings for Jaunty users using the 0.36 release.

 import networkx as nx

and

 import networkx as nx

[Bug 305171] Re: D2568 HP Deskjet printer driver not found

2009-06-01 Thread Jonathan Harker
I am having the same problem with a new HP Deskjet D2560. plugged in and
switched on. Using Jaunty, with hpijs/hplip/hplip-gui 3.9.2-3ubuntu4
installed. Plugged into USB, switched on:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2)
 Device Information Utility ver. 5.2
 error: No devices found.

Interestingly, lsusb reports:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0424:2504 Standard Microsystems Corp. USB 2.0 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 045e:00db Microsoft Corp. Natural Ergonomic Keyboard
4000 V1.0
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c01e Logitech, Inc. MX518 Optical Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The ppdev module appears to be running:

 $ lsmod|grep ppd
 ppdev 15620 0
 parport42220 3 lp,ppdev,parport_pc

So it seems the USB detection isn't working at all, so it is no wonder
the rest of the software stack is not detecting the printer.

I get this problem on both my desktop machine and a new ASUS laptop,
both running up to date Jaunty, i686 arch.

For me, X hangs, and I need to hard-reset. Can currently only use

If it helps, I noticed the fglrx module is not loaded. When I try to
load it manually, this happens in dmesg:

2009-03-03 Thread Jonathan Harker
I posted this in #207135 too (probably a dup?):
If you are getting high CPU usage from pulse, change the resample method in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf to a less CPU intensive algorithm:

resample-method = src-sinc-fastest

See if this works for you. My CPU dropped from 2-5% CPU to pretty much
below the background noise. Perhaps there needs to be a less high end
default?

[Bug 272653] Re: sound-juicer not ejecting after rip complete (intrepid)

2008-10-20 Thread Jonathan Harker
Not fixed for me, after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid. I'm currently
running with amd64 arch, and all most recent updates:

sound-juicer 2.24.0-0ubuntu1
linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic 2.6.27-7.12

lspci reports:

00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 IDE (rev f2)
00:07.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 Serial ATA Controller (rev f3)
00:08.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK804 Serial ATA Controller (rev f3)

The DVD drive is reported by cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs as:

LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236VR$0C

What else do you need to know? gdm trace?
Cheers, J

[Bug 282538] Re: Update from hardy to intrepid looses connection settings

2008-10-19 Thread Jonathan Harker
I have a similar issue. I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid and my PPTP
VPN connections stopped working. They still don't work. This is BAD (TM)
