[Bug 874474] [NEW] [oneiric] virt-manager uses 100% CPU
Public bug reported: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virt-manager/+bug/707313 has come back in virt-manager 0.9.0 from Oneiric. Just as described in that report, if I start virt-manager with no options, it constantly uses 100% of one CPU regardless of what it's doing or whether any virtual machines are running. If I start it with the --debug option, it doesn't use excessive CPU time. ** Affects: virt-manager Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: virt-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874474 Title: [oneiric] virt-manager uses 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/virt-manager/+bug/874474/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 107540] Re: Audigy sound card produces no sound
I have the same problem as described in the original report except that I must enable (unmute) the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack switch to get any sound out of the analog 3.5 jacks I have my surround speaker system plugged in to. I believe that I have had this problem ever since I bought this Audigy card, but since I determined the fix experimentally years ago and the libasound state was preserved, I didn't remember until I tried a Karmic Live CD recently. I've been quite impressed with the integration of sound preferences and mixer controls in Karmic that hide all distinctions between Pulseaudio, ALSA, kernel, and userspace behind an easy to use GUI. When I boot a Live CD, I can completely control both the motherboard sound device and the Audigy card using the standard volume control and preferences, but I get absolutely no sound out of the Audigy until I run alsamixer in a terminal and unmute its Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack control. Since this is clearly a device-specific problem, but is related to userspace configuration, I'm not sure if it should be classified as a kernel bug or not. -- Audigy sound card produces no sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107540 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 316074] Re: Exaile cannot play songs that are housed in folders that have [] square brackets in the name!
I had a similar problem, though the symptoms were somewhat different. I discovered that Exaile wouldn't play some files I'd ripped from CDs. It seemed to do everything normally such as displaying song length and metadata. When trying to play the file, no sound would come out and the time would remain at 0:00 indefinitely. I would have to manually change songs to get Exaile to continue playing anything. I noticed that the problem files were FLAC, so I thought that maybe it was FLAC encoding problem or a Gstreamer decoding problem, but many other players (including Gstreamer ones like Totem) had no trouble playing them. Finally I noticed that the file names contained # (ASCII 35). It seems there was something Exaile didn't like about that character. What made it difficult to diagnose was that Exaile never indicated any kind of error and had no trouble extracting metadata from the files, but simply wouldn't play them. I just installed Exaile 0.2.99.3 and it does not seem to have this bug, though it seems to be lacking important features like the ability to read my old settings and database. -- Exaile cannot play songs that are housed in folders that have [] square brackets in the name! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316074 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Is the /dev/sda device you're referring to an SATA or parallel ATA device? If it's SATA I'm pretty sure there's never any need to set 32-bit transfer or DMA modes using hdparm. Notice that the hdparm man page only mentions (E)IDE in the section about the -c option. AFAICT the effect of both the -c and -d options depends entirely on the PCI device and driver. [Bug 148454] Re: console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads
Sounds great, Loye. I look forward to your memory footprint reduced console-kit-daemon. I too am interested in multiseat configurations. I've experimented with a configuration that uses Xorg to create a separate screen on each of two ports of my video card and an instance of Xephyr running on top of each. That approach works, but is far from ideal in both functionality and memory footprint. I still don't think console-kit-daemon's footprint should be nearly as high priority as the X server's, which is 20 times larger on my system. Of course, a lot of portable and embedded systems use GUIs with no X server or a very small one, like tinyX, but those aren't typically multi user. For comparison's sake, what is the smallest footprint you've seen of a functional X server on a system that had multiple users in a way that needed console-kit-daemon? I'm sure it's possible to reduce the memory footprint and other resources of console-kit-daemon, but I haven't seen any strong evidence that it deserves as much attention as much more demanding daemons and apps on an Ubuntu system. I'm also curious about how a completely dormant thread reduces performance of the system. But the main problem with this bug report is that it's too vague. If console-kit-daemon can be made to only track the Linux virtual consoles in use and that decreases footprint and improves performance, this bug report should say so. However, currently it says nothing about what the threads are used for or what would be an appropriate number of threads. -- console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148454 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 148454] Re: console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads
While it may be technically correct that spawning a thread for each potential virtual console wastes resources, does anyone have an estimate of how much? On my system, console-kit daemon (the entire process with all umpteen threads) is using about 2.5MiB of resident memory, of which about 1.7MiB is shared with other processes. This is pretty modest compared with many other standard Ubuntu processes like hald (4.5MiB), pulseaudio (6.5MiB), and Xorg (56.7MiB). If I wanted to strip the system down to the bare essentials to require less RAM, I'd completely disable things like console-kit-daemon, hald, cupsd and other daemons that aren't absolutely essential. However, on a typical modern system with 512MiB of RAM or more, 2.5MiB just isn't very significant. If someone were able modify console-kit-daemon so that it used only 1MiB to do the same job, that would be great, but I think this bug report with its hopelessly vague title (how many threads is too many?) isn't likely to do anything but waste time. -- console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148454 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 180008] Re: libflashsupport useless on amd64
Thank you very much for the package. It seems it's now quite a bit easier to build libflashsupport on x86_64 than it was a couple of months ago when I did it on my Hardy machine, since more libraries like libpulse and libgnutls have been added to ia32-libs. However, I did have to do a couple of extra things to get your package to work on my system. First, I assume that the third line in your instructions should read sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so.13 /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so. Are those symlinks even necessary? On my machine, they don't seem to be, since /usr/lib32/libflashsupport.so from your package links to /usr/lib32/libpulse.so.0 and /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so.13 from ia32-libs. Did you need those symlinks to build the package? Second, ia32-libs still doesn't seem to include /lib32/libcap.so.1, which /usr/lib32/libflashsupport.so from your package links to. I simply copied the libcap.so.1.10 from the i386 libcap1 package to /lib32 and ran sudo ldconfig. Did you do something like that on your machine? So, in summary, it looks like the main things remaining is for libcap.so.1 to be added to ia32-libs and for patch to be accepted. -- libflashsupport useless on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/180008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 174322] Re: S-ATA cannot be set to use DMA and 32-bit mode
I could be mistaken, but I've been firmly under the impression that setting most performance-related modes like 32-bit transfers and DMA is not necessary for SATA devices, since the host interface should take care of tuning to a much greater extent than was possible for legacy parallel ATA. I have a Western Digital Raptor connected to the SATA inteface on my Asus motherboard using the sata_via driver and sudo hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/sda also fails for me, though performance is great: dparm measures almost 70MB/sec reading. Of course, if you aren't able to use hdparm to set those values for a parallel ATA device (which may also be called /dev/sd? if it's provided by a libata driver), that's a completely different issue. -- S-ATA cannot be set to use DMA and 32-bit mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 180008] Re: libflashsupport useless on amd64
Joonas, which version of gcc do you have installed? I have gcc version 4.2.3-1ubuntu3 and gcc-4.2 version 4.2.3-2ubuntu1 installed. However, my gcc command does not seem to be able to build 32-bit binaries using the -m32 option. When I follow your instructions, configure complains that the compiler can't create executables. I believe the problem is with the static libgcc the gcc uses when linking. I have also installed gcc-3.4 version 3.4.6-6ubuntu3 for comparison. The command gcc -print-libgcc-file-name returns /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64 -linux-gnu/4.2.3/libgcc.a which looks right. However, gcc -m32 -print- libgcc-file-name gives me exactly the same result: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64 -linux-gnu/4.2.3/libgcc.a which can't be right. In contrast gcc-3.4 -print-libgcc-file-name gives me /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libgcc.a and gcc-3.4 -m32 -print- libgcc-file-name gives me /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux- gnu/3.4.6/32/libgcc.a. As far as I can tell, this is a serious bug in the Hardy gcc-4.2 (and gcc-4.1) packages, so I probably need to submit separately. -- libflashsupport useless on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/180008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 180008] Re: libflashsupport useless on amd64
Forget my patch, as I was ignorant of the gcc-multilib packages which seem to only exist for gcc-4.x. I think it's quite confusing that on my Hardy system, gcc-3.4 -m32 works properly with no -multilib packages installed, while gcc-3.3 -m32, gcc-4.1 -m32, and gcc-4.2 -m32 don't. Now that I have gcc-multilib and gcc-4.2-multilib installed, Joonas' patch works fine for me as long as I have the 32-bit libcap.so.1.10 installed manually. I do need the symlinks /usr/lib32/libpulse.so and /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so to build, though I'm not sure why, as they're not needed at runtime. So, here's a slightly updated version of the build instructions, still using Joonas' original patch: Quick instructions: sudo apt-get install fakeroot dpkg-dev ia32-libs gcc-multilib sudo apt-get build-dep libflashsupport sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so.13 /usr/lib32/libgnutls.so sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libpulse.so.0 /usr/lib32/libpulse.so apt-get source libflashsupport cd libflashsupport-1.9 patch -p0 where_the_patch_file_is fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage cd .. You'll find the deb here. [Bug 128447] Re: libsdl-1.2 package has unnecessary variants
I'm not positive, but it looks like libsdl1.2debian-all already is the unified package you describe. I only found this page because I'm running Hardy and trying to get everything to work well with PulseAudio, including SDL apps. The libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio package was already installed on, but all SDL apps would die with Couldn't open audio device!. After chasing various potential causes of this problem, including timidity configuration which playsound misleadingly blames, I finally discovered that when I install libsdl1.2debian-all and set SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse in the environment, SDL apps work fine with PulseAudio, though they don't when libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio is installed. So, I agree wholeheartedly with your proposal. It looks like the specialized packages are not only unnecessary, but harmful. Probably, simply eliminating them and setting SDL_AUDIODRIVER to the desired driver in the global environment somewhere would be far better. -- libsdl-1.2 package has unnecessary variants https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/128447 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 180221] sound doesn't work using libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio binary package
Public bug reported: I upgraded my amd64 system from Gutsy to Hardy specifically to try out the new PulseAudio integration. When I tried to run several SDL apps (playsound, mplayer with -o sdl, moon-lander) they all died, complaining Couldn't open audio device!. The libsdl1.2debian- pulseaudio binary package had been installed automatically, but SDL apps were not able to play sound using any SDL driver. When I installed the libsdl1.2debian-all package instead, SDL programs were able to play sound using the alsa, pulseaudio, and esd drivers by setting the SDL_AUDIODRIVER environment variable to one of those values. It seems that libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio is not built correctly, at least on amd64. As discussed in Bug #128447, the various binary packages including libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio seem unnecessary, since libsdl1 .2debian-all does the job well. ** Affects: libsdl1.2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- sound doesn't work using libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio binary package https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/180221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 112948] Re: Ekiga hangs when using pulseaudio
I get the same error with the speaker-test program from alsa-utils: speaker-test: pcm_params.c:2351: sndrv_pcm_hw_params: Assertion `err = 0' failed. However, some ALSA apps, such as aplay, alsa-mixer, mplayer with -ao alsa, and exaile work just fine with the pulse pcm and control plugins. OTOH, several SDL apps skip and even crash the PulseAudio server when using the alsa pulse plugin. The same SDL apps work much better when using the SDL esd or pulse plugins to connect to the same server. So, I suspect the bug lies in the PulseAudio server and/or the pulse alsa plugin. It seems the server must be at least partly to blame, since some client connections (mostly from the alsa plugin) crash it. -- Ekiga hangs when using pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112948 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 112948] Re: Ekiga hangs when using pulseaudio
I'm no longer so certain there's a bug in the PulseAudio server. Some ALSA clients (such as SDL) cause pulseaudio to use all available CPU time until it writes Soft CPU time limit exhausted, terminating. to its stdout and exits. I'm not sure exactly where that message comes from or what causes pulseaudio to exit. [Bug 141146] Re: DPI is set incorrectly by new driver, even when DisplaySize is set in xorg.conf
I can confirm this bug. I've been using Xorg's radeon driver from xserver-xorg-video-ati in Feisty to display on an LCD TV. My situation is complicated by two things. First, like a lot TVs (as opposed to monitors), mine reports incorrect EDID information over VGA and DVI. It claims to have a size of 4cm x 3cm, with is not only impossibly small, but the wrong aspect ratio, since it's a 16:9 TV. Second, since I'm running MythTV, which misuses the DPI information and always wants 100x100 DPI regardless of actual display size, I had to manufacture a DisplaySize that is different from both the actual dimensions and what the TV reports. Just yesterday, I upgraded to Gutsy and discovered that text in a terminal emulator was unreadably small (about 1 to 2 pixels high) and video was scaled to a narrow strip an inch or two high in the middle of the screen. Though X still reported that it was using 100x100 DPI in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, xdpyinfo reported 52x6 DPI. So, apparently, X lies about the DPI in the log, ignoring the explicitly set DisplaySize for the DPI reported to clients. If I use the same /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but run X -dpi 100, both the log and xdpyinfo report 100x100 DPI. ** Attachment added: My xorg.conf http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10064181/xorg.conf -- DPI is set incorrectly by new driver, even when DisplaySize is set in xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/141146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
