[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux
I'm running a VIA EPIA board sans PAE that is about 3-4 years old. I am a longtime Ubuntu user who has been running Ubuntu on various machines since Warty. I am extremely disappointed that Tim Gardner describes Ubuntu users such as myself as "simply out of luck (and no longer supported)" when it comes to removing support for relatively modern, non-PAE hardware. [Bug 443278] [NEW] Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 USB webcam does not work if connected after booting
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 9.10 beta and am having problems with a Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 USB camera. If the camera is connected when the computer boots, it works perfectly in the following applications: cheese, ekiga, gstreamer-properties, camorama. If the camera is connected AFTER I have booted the computer (either while within GNOME or while gdm is running), then it does not work with cheese, ekiga, gstreamer-properties, or camorama. I have verified both of these statements on both my desktop PC (from which this bug report is submitted) and on my laptop (which is also running Ubuntu 9.10 beta. Also, I have tested the camera from a third computer running Windows Vista so I do not believe the problem is related to the camera hardware or the hardware on either of my two computers running Ubuntu. This problem did not exist in earlier versions of Ubuntu so it is a regression. Due to the nature of the problem, I don't suspect that this is a bug with any of the desktop applications that I named or with gstreamer itself (since I have tried both gstreamer and non-gstreamer applications). I am happy to troubleshoot further but at this point I don't know how to determine if it is a problem with the kernel, kernel camera module (which is pwc), V4L or one of the hotplug frameworks. [Bug 442828] Re: installation does not work for left-handed users
Evan, I completely agree with you that when ubiquity is being run from within GNOME it should behave like every other desktop application. However, when ubiquity is started without GNOME then there is no way to change the mouse preferences. Ubiquity is the first and only GUI application with which a user interacts. This use case is not the most usable for left-handed users. As I see it, there are three options: Option 1. Force all users who only run ubiquity to use the mouse right- handed (this is how it works currently and why I opened this bug). Option 2. Alter ubiquity so that when it is launched from the boot menu and is not run within GNOME, it treats left-handed clicks and right- handed clicks the same. Option 3. Give users some sort of prompt before ubiquity runs that allows them to select a left-handed or a right-handed mouse configuration and apply that setting for the rest of the installation. I am definitely no usability expert but I suspect that we can offer an better experience to our users than the first option. If you still think that the second option (my proposal in this bug report) is not the cleanest route to go then I respect that and I will open a bug for the third option. -- installation does not work for left-handed users https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442828 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 442828] [NEW] installation does not work for left-handed users
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 beta via a i386 Desktop CD. I ran ubiquity only (sans desktop). The GTK+ buttons used in ubiquity only accept clicks from the left mouse button and not the right. This prohibits left-handed users from being able to use the installer in a left-handed fashion. I propose that ubiquity's behavior be altered to match that of gdm's so that a user can use either the right or the left mouse button to click the buttons in ubiquity. Additionally, any right-click context menus that currently exist in ubiquity would need to be removed. (I know that at the very least the custom partitioning setup screen makes use of these). These changes would allow either right-handed or left-handed users to perform an installation without needing to prompt a user to find out how he or she is using the mouse. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- installation does not work for left-handed users https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442828 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 32302] Re: Duplicate printers listed when adding HP printer
With respect to the author of the patch, I do not think that this is the right solution. The new behavior does nothing to help new users figure out why they see their printer listed twice and more importantly, which of the two printers listed should be selected. While I have no research to back it up, I am willing to bet anything that the average computer user has no idea what "backend" means in the context of software. Furthermore, a user should not be forced to learn how CUPS works in order to set up a printer for the most basic usage. I sincerely feel that this is one of those areas where choice needs to be limited and a sane default picked. Only one entry should be on the list for each physical printer. [Bug 65656] Re: zenity does not display libnotify message bubble
I am running the development version of Feisty with all the latest updates and as far as I can see the bug is still present. Although, I can manage to get it to work in one particular case whereas it never worked in Edgy. As I understand it, the following command should make the libnotify message bubble appear yet it does not do so in Feisty: zenity --notification --text "Bubbles, bubbles everywhere but not a drop to drink." Yes, the above command does make an icon appear in the notification tray area, but the text argument is not displayed unless the mouse pointer is moved over the icon. However, I can make it work correctly by typing the following: zenity --notification --listen message: A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men. Hopefully someone can resolve this before the Feisty release. Yes, it is a minor cosmetic bug but the functionality could make for some much more user-friendly scripts as they wouldn't need to steal focus. -- zenity does not display libnotify message bubble https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/65656 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 68607] Re: No direct rendering by default with i810/i815 video
My concern is not so much about the compositing window managers as it is for the 3D screensavers that Ubuntu ships by default. Some of these tend to lock up a system when being rendered in software. There are also several 3D games in the repositories that run much better with DRI enabled. The i810 and i815 are a couple of those rare chipsets for which there is a free (libre) driver that supports hardware-accelerated 3D. Ubuntu should take full advantage of that so that when i810 and i815 users install Ubuntu, they do not need to tweak Xorg.conf in order to take full advantage of their hardware. -- No direct rendering by default with i810/i815 video https://launchpad.net/bugs/68607 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 68607] No direct rendering by default with i810/i815 video
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg On machines with Intel i810 or i815 onboard video, xorg.conf is configured to use the i810 xorg video driver with a color depth of 24. According to the i810 man page, this driver requires that the color depth be set to 16 in order to do hardware accelerated 3D for these chipsets: "The driver supports hardware accelerated 3D via the Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI), but only in depth 16 for the i810/i815 and depths 16 and 24 for the 830M and later." [Bug 42049] Re: no direct rendering on dapper with i810 chipset (855GM)
Your X output seems to indicate that you have the color depth set to 24. Unfortunately, the Intel 810 and 815 chipsets require the color depth to be changed to 16 in order for direct rendering to work. This is from the i810 man page: "The driver supports hardware accelerated 3D via the Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI), but only in depth 16 for the i810/i815 and depths 16 and 24 for the 830M and later." By default, Ubuntu (as of Edgy) always sets the color depth to 24 for computers with Intel graphics. Just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root, look for the line that says "DefaultDepth24" in the screen section, change it to "DefaultDepth16" and restart X. -- no direct rendering on dapper with i810 chipset (855GM) https://launchpad.net/bugs/42049 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1580] Re: uppercase letters are not recognized as a valid form of input
When a user is expected to provide keyboard input, it is not typical that only one case will be acceptable. This bug exposes an inconsistency to the user interface that results in poor usability. I am not advocating case insensitivity or otherwise. I'll leave those technical details to the developers to work out. Furthermore, the better solution is probably not to require the user to provide input at all. The user's name can be gleaned from /etc/passwd in the same way that the standard GNOME games do so.
