[Bug 1863978] Re: boot failing - unable to handle kernel paging request - followed by oops

2020-02-21 Thread Joseph Price
@michielvalee my issues were caused by a bad kernel module installed by
an Azure Extension agent. Given the timing, I'd recommend you check your
subscription admin's email inbox for details if you were also affected.

[Bug 775052] Re: AR2413 won't work

2011-05-01 Thread Joseph Price
** Summary changed:

- AR2413 randomly disconnects and is unrecoverable
+ AR2413 won't work

** Description changed:

I've updated a Maverick install to Natty. Its an Acer Aspire 5610Z and
  includes an AR2413 wireless card.

'Randomly' the connection is lost. It tries to reconnect and eventually
asks me for my wireless key but still fails.

After rebooting it cannot find any SSIDs and yep... stuck.

Booting into the 2.6.35-27-generic kernel (what I was on, on Maverick)
starts the wireless card working again and everything's fine.
+
+ I've then realised that if I remove all power and start Natty up, it
+ doesn't work.
+
+ It seems whatever is "left over" after running a maverick kernel, lets
+ it continue working for a short while.

[Bug 585766] [NEW] wget ignores http_proxy settings

2010-05-26 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wget

I've been trying to wget a file in a bash terminal, whilst behind a
proxy. That proxy is set via the gui in system > preferences as a 'http
proxy', 'use for all protocols' & 'apply system wide'.

I have tried setting the http_proxy environment variable, using the
--proxy=on setting, adding similar options to ~/.wgetrc and copying
/etc/wgetrc etc. etc.

None of this works.

However, if I ssh to localhost and then try it, it works, first time,
every time, no messing.

What setting is telling wget not to use a proxy? Why does everything
work fine for apt, synaptic, etc. etc. but not wget on the command line.
Why does wget work when i ssh!

[Bug 575060] [NEW] clicking 'subscribe to this page' with page including rss+rdf sends to non-existant page

2010-05-04 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Fresh install of Lucid. Using a proxy but doubt that matters.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to http://groklaw.net/
2. Click on the "subscribe to this page..." button at the far right of the
address bar (left of favourite star/the arrow to open the dropdown)
3. Choose "Subscribe to 'Groklaw RSS'..."

Rather than sending you to http://www.groklaw.net/backend/GrokLaw.rss or
even http://www.groklaw.net/backend/GrokLaw.rdf as expected (the links
at the bottom of the page) it has send me to
feed://http//www.groklaw.net/backend/GrokLaw.rdf

Bit odd how it also gives the name of the rss feed yet sends you to a

[Bug 310769] [NEW] Cannot copy keys from authenticate window

2008-12-22 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin-otr

When authenticating a buddy (OTR > Authenticate Buddy) from the chat
window, one of the options is Manual Fingerprint Verification.

Here it lists your key and the key the other user presents.

I believe you should be able to hilight copy these keys to paste them in
a GPG-signed email as it suggests, rather than typing it out manually
again. An example of this is from the off the record plugin settings. On
the Config tab, you can choose an account from the dropdown, and its
private key is displayed beneath. The key is selectable here and can
easily be copy/pasted.

[Bug 292311] [NEW] pidgin-otr produces 3 identical menus in conversation windows

2008-11-01 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin-otr

I'm using a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10
I have pidgin-otr 3.2.0-1 & pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1

In conversation windows, by default there is 2 menus in the top row. The first
is displayed as 'OTR'. The second displays the status of the conversation using
an icon.
The third menu is to the right of the "Smile!" button.

All three of these buttons/menus produce the exact same thing.

I believe that in the pidgin options there should be an option to enable
one menu on the toolbar and/or one menu next to "Smile!". I think that
only one of these should be enabled by default. Whichever one is
enabled, it should show the status of the conversation.

[Bug 228414] [NEW] Layout has become more complicated

2008-05-08 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnomebaker

In Gutsy, upon starting gnomebaker, the user is presented with four huge
buttons, being the 4 main common tasks. Its easy for the user to choose
the one they want. On the next screen, they then have two panes, left
and right and can drag files from the left, their drive, to the right,
the cd. Once done, they burn.

In Hardy, the situation seems much more confusing. There are several, almost
evenly emphasised options on how to continue. Do they click "New" top left?..
oh that gives the same options as below.
Once choosing one, the bottom half swaps to give a tree view of the image on
the left, and files in the selected folder on the right. I don't think this is
very clearly presented either. The grey bar that splits the two is almost the
same colour as the background in each window, making the distinction harder.
There are also two add/removes...
 * One is 'add', 'remove' on the top (file system), which adds the selected
folder to nautilus' favourites. I don't believe this is needed in a disc
burning application.
 * The second is 'add file(s)', 'remove selected'. These are useful and should
stay ;)

In summary I think things could be made 'slightly' easier if the gutsy
'start screen' was returned and if the add/remove buttons mentioned
above were removed, pending a real usability study.

[Bug 195952] [NEW] gstreamer-properties default video out should be X Window System (No Xv)

2008-02-26 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

On the intel 945, (and probably a few other chipsets) when compiz is
enabled, video playback may be left behind when the window containing it
is dragged around. This is on Ubuntu Gutsy with the 'intel' driver.

For totem, an easy fix that I have found for this is to fire up gnome-
properties, navigate to the video tab and change the default video
output plugin to "X Window System (No Xv)"

For vlc, roughly the same idea. I know these two are affected but I am
unsure about the others. http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/VideoPlayback

[Bug 191691] Re: To prevent dcc exploit, default port should be 8001 for irc.ubuntu.com

2008-02-14 Thread Joseph Price
To DarkMageZ,

The vulnerability is not in Ubuntu, but in the router a user uses. As
far as I understand it, the router believes that the information being
passed through it is an instruction for it, and so attempts to interpret
it. Failing, it dies and closes the connection.

The vulnerability does not exist on any port other than 6667, and so
your worry about attackers doing this on 8001 is impossible.

Yes, the "real" solution is for the router manufacturers to fix their
firmware, and for users to download and install this firmware. However
this hasn't happened in the past couple of years, and so probably won't
be happening any time soon. As explained in the original post, it would
be beneficial to both end users, and the support community in #ubuntu
(and other channels) if this is not an issue otb, and users don't have
to go through the hassle of #ubuntu-read-topic.

[Bug 191691] [NEW] To prevent dcc exploit, default port should be 8001 for irc.ubuntu.com

2008-02-13 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat

#ubuntu is regularly attacked by a well known exploit via ctcp.
Users with vulnerable routers can find their irc connection drop or sometimes
affect the router. As well as being disruptive to the user, it disrupts the
channel with the join/part messages.

Only connections to irc on port 6667 can be exploited. Freenode allows
connections on several other ports and we usually suggest
irc.ubuntu.com/8001

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixDCCExploit is the page we currently
show to affected users.

The settings for the default connection when xchat is started up should
be changed to irc.ubuntu.com/8001

[Bug 188724] [NEW] update-manager gives incorrect warnings about cancellation

2008-02-03 Thread Joseph Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When about to start the upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy, update-manager
warned me that it would be impossible to cancel whilst fetching and
installing updates.

This isn't true is it? Its perfectly fine to cancel whilst updates are
being downloaded, just can be messy once the instillation of them has
begun.

The window even includes a "Cancel" button despite the previous warning.

[Bug 139663] Re: no horizontal scroll bar

2007-09-15 Thread Joseph Price
Just downgraded something to get update-manager to show this.

Obviously when there are more packages, the vertical scrollbar appears,
however I think it should be consistent and show the horizontal
scrollbar at the bottom so you can see the full information on the
package without resizing the window.

By the way, it isn't auto resizing for me as you described.

Public bug reported:

If the user is installing Ubuntu and hits the close button, the
installation process should not cancel immediately but instead, there
should be a pop-up window asking "Are you sure you wish to cancel the
installation?" with the buttons "Yes" and "No".

That's because I remember even in Feisty, I accidentally hit the "X"
button and it just cancelled the installation, without asking me.
