[Bug 1624058] [NEW] Mouse cursor cannot interact with shell when USB mouse is turned on

2016-09-15 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

As of booting my 16.04 laptop this morning (first restart after unity
updates were installed on 2016-09-14), the mouse cursor fails to
interact properly with Unity shell elements whenever my USB mouse is
plugged in and turned on.

Tech specs: my system is a ThinkPad T420 which I usually use with an
external Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic USB keyboard/mouse pair.

If the mouse is turned off, and I use my touchpad, all is fine with the
cursor/shell interactions. However, if the USB mouse is on, then no
matter whether I use mouse or touchpad, the cursor will interact only
with internal details of a single focused window. If I switch between
windows using Alt+Tab or Alt+` then mouse events such as mouse click
will continue to affect the original window.

Keyboard shortcuts continue to work just fine, no matter whether I am
using the laptop keyboard or the external USB keyboard.

AFAICT this also affects CD ripping via e.g. Rhythmbox: the resulting

[Bug 1476559] [NEW] Cannot tap links on very bottom of webpage

2015-07-21 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

When touching the very bottom of the window, the webbrowser-app brings
up the new-tab bottom-of-screen panel. This means that if a webpage has
links on the very bottom of the page, it is impossible to click them.

Prior to r24, it was possible to deal with this by rotating to
horizontal view, and tapping the link, since "bottom of the screen" was
defined on one screen edge only. However, since r24 brings full shell
rotation, this is no longer the case.

Example webpage where this affects the ability to navigate:
http://forum.dlang.org/thread/mnp350$7ql$2...@digitalmars.com (scroll down
to the bottom for the « First ‹ Prev | Next › Last » links, these
are now impossible to use).

[Bug 1436538] Re: brigtness slider should not allow total darkness

2015-04-18 Thread Joseph Wakeling
@Matthew I guess I was assuming that the reset-all-system-settings
option could be provided via the boot options available after pressing
the power+VolUp buttons (I'm assuming here that the secondary menu made
available when pressing VolUp during the recovery boot is not suitable,
as it looked like that was part of the Android stack, but might be
wrong).

[Bug 1436538] Re: brigtness slider should not allow total darkness

2015-04-16 Thread Joseph Wakeling
@John thanks again for clarification. In any case I did a factory reset
via the power+VolUp buttons. All back and working now. Perhaps a
worthwhile feature request for the future, to have a reset option that
resets device settings, without wiping data? :-)

[Bug 1436538] Re: brigtness slider should not allow total darkness

2015-04-16 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Any chance of a _very_ hand-holdy description of how to fix this? I ran
into the issue yesterday with my Aquaris phone (obviously the updated
image hasn't landed on the phones yet) and, as the original submitter
says, now have an effectively bricked phone (although the alarm woke me
up this morning:-).

The workaround described in comment 4 is simply not detailed enough for
me to understand what I need to do (or the risks associated with it).
In many ways I'd be more comfortable using some kind of "press these
hardware buttons in this combination to reset settings to default" kind
of option (if that exists and won't also result in my data being wiped).

For the record, my phone was AFAIK up to date in terms of OTA updates
(as in, yesterday lunchtime I'd updated the OS and apps).

[Bug 1444741] [NEW] Setting brightness to minimum results in black screen

2015-04-15 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

I was playing with brightness settings on my new BQ Aquaris phone, and
slid the screen brightness down to the absolute minimum in order to try
and reduce battery usage. This didn't work, because the automatic
brightness adjustment was still selected; but when I un-selected that
option, the entire screen went black and has not recovered since.

Pressing on the power button, as if to wake up the phone, occasionally
results in a brief flicker of what looks like the touch login screen,
before the screen goes black again.

This obviously seems to me as a bug (minimum screen brightness shouldn't
be completely black!) but in addition to a fix, I'd really appreciate
someone advising how I can reset the phone's settings to defaults, given
that as things are, I cannot actually log into the phone and adjust
things. (Ideally, reset phone settings without killing any of the data
already copied to the phone.)

[Bug 1255558] Re: Can't type my password after cold boot

2014-01-14 Thread Joseph Wakeling
I'm getting this too on a ThinkPad T420 with Intel graphics; my
workaround is to select the (apparently already-selected!) keyboard
layout on the login page, after which I can click and type password.

Once logged in, the keyboard layout is then invariably set to English
(US) despite the fact that I've just selected English (UK) on the login
page. There's no reason that I can see why this should be so from
/etc/default/keyboard or from what's in the Ubuntu settings.

[Bug 1223882] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002 IPEHR: 0x0b140001

2014-01-08 Thread Joseph Wakeling
I just ran the command you asked on my current 14.04 install. I've no
idea if the error reproduces with xmir/unity-system-compositor enabled
because I haven't installed them this time round; but when I was running
13.10, it certainly seemed like the GPU hangups occurred more frequently
with them installed.

So, if you'd like me to test with them installed, let me know and I'll
get that set up.

Additionally -- I see you added a bios-outdated tag to the bug. If
that's an issue with my system, I could drop into W*s and see if
Lenovo has released a bios update :-)

installation of trusty. If you want me to run the report from a "clean"
daily image running from USB, I'm happy to do that as well.

Not certain, but I think that (i) this GPU lockup is more likely when
unity-system-compositor is enabled and (ii) lots of system activity,
particularly involving things like video playback, also seems more
  likely to cause it.

that the bug is indeed fixed by these packages.

produces correct output, and the fonts in the documentation are correct
too. I haven't checked the non-English Lilypond documentation.

Yes, the package in saucy-proposed fixes the mpost problem. Bear in
mind that lilypond will need to be rebuilt using the updated texlive-bin
in order to benefit from it.

2013-10-26 Thread Joseph Wakeling
This second example shows correct Lilypond output with a correctly-
formed treble clef, built using Lilypond built from deb source with a
fixed mpost.

To reproduce:

   (i) install updated texlive-binaries from
https://launchpad.net/~laney/+archive/experimental/ (contains fixed
mpost)

   (ii) apt-get source lilypond; cd lilypond-2.16.2; ./configure && make

[Bug 1223332] Re: [snb mesa blorp] False GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2013-10-21 Thread Joseph Wakeling
@Alberto, are you sure this isn't down to the XMir patch to the driver?
I've only experienced these lockups running an XMir session, never plain
X.

Ack, I may have spoken too soon. :-( I've not experienced a GPU lockup
again (yet), but have started to experience again the video slowdown
that's typically a precursor to lockup.

2013-10-11 Thread Joseph Wakeling
I'm running plain X today and HTML5 video is playing fine. So, I
conclude that the likely explanation is some part of the Intel driver
that's being activated by XMir but not by plain X.

[Bug 1238210] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2013-10-10 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Contra to my earlier "no obvious reason", I think this lockup occurs
when playing HTML5 video in the Firefox browser (I don't have
flashplugin installed). I don't have experience with other browsers to
compare. The video starts getting slowed up and then freezes entirely,
along with all graphics, while the audio continues; when the system
unfreezes, typically the multimonitor settings seem to reset, with my
laptop screen mirroring my external display (normally the laptop screen
is disabled), and it is not possible then to alter the multimonitor
settings back to where they were.

I'm running Mir+XMir, but I'm not sure if that's relevant -- will fall
back to plain X and see if this behaviour reproduces itself.

This may be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1223332.

2013-10-10 Thread Joseph Wakeling
I can confirm that this is readily reproducible by playing HTML5 YouTube
video, although for whatever reason, Apport keeps directing me to this
duplicate -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/1224914 -- rather than to this bug. My system is using
Mir+XMir; I don't know if that is relevant, and will test with plain X
in the next days.

I'm seeing no keyboard-related issues whatsoever, incidentally.

[Bug 1223332] Re: [snb mesa blorp] False GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2013-10-07 Thread Joseph Wakeling
I have noticed serious graphical issues that occur when e.g. watching a
video in the web browser (e.g. watching an HTML5 video in YouTube; I
don't have flashplayer installed). The graphics will start to slow up
and then lock for a few moments before "releasing". If watching on an
external monitor, after the lock-up releases both screens will become
active and mirrored, and it is not possible to reset to single monitor
settings via the System Settings dialog. The report of the crash then
arrives at next login.

[Bug 1193222] Re: Screen never sleeps; missing power management

2013-09-30 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Screen still not turning off -- this is on a ThinkPad T420 with Intel
graphics [Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)].

Is powerd now considered necessary also for Ubuntu Desktop? If so as
Eduardo says it should probably be added as a recommend or dependency of
mir.

Having purged links2, system-level crashes are now reported using
Chromium (which at least means it's possible to report these bugs).

[Bug 1223882] [NEW] [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002 IPEHR: 0x0b140001

Not certain, but I think that (i) this GPU lockup is more likely when

likely to cause it.

I can confirm that links2 is being run as user, not root, but the
question is why it's being run in the first place ... :-)

I've uninstalled it with sudo apt-get purge links2, so will report back
on whether apport now handles system-level crashes properly.

[Bug 1223249] [NEW] apport opens launchpad in links2 browser when reporting a system-level crash

2013-09-10 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

When apport attempts to report a user-level crash, it opens Launchpad in
the default browser (firefox) and all is fine.

However, should a system-level crash occur, once I've typed in my
administrator password apport will attempt to open Launchpad using the
links2 browser (in graphics mode).

I have not checked whether links2 is being run as root, but if so, this
is presumably a serious security hole (I will make sure to check this
with the next system-level crash that occurs).

[Bug 1079283] Re: Unity ignores Gnome privacy settings

2013-02-26 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Update: I realized why the files were appearing in Dash -- Dash was not
searching files, but my Shotwell library. With Shotwell library
cleared, and history cleared again, the "Don't record activity"
constraints were respected and the files in question no longer showed up
in Dash.

This sounds like a typical culprit for users finding their "Don't
record" settings are seemingly not being respected. It also adds an
extra search/blacklist challenge, as it may be very desirable to include
certain files or folders in e.g. a photo, video or audio program's
library while excluding them from Dash search.

[Bug 1114248] [NEW] python-poppler-qt4 should be rebuilt when python-sip is upgraded

2013-02-03 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

The python-poppler-qt4 package needs to be rebuilt whenever python-sip
is updated, or possibly whenever the version of sip-api implemented by
python-sip is updated.

An example as to why is provided by the following past bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/frescobaldi/+bug/939196

... where the Frescobaldi package in Ubuntu was unable to run correctly due to
incorrect sip bindings. The same issue appears to have re-arisen with the
latest python-poppler-qt4 package:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/frescobaldi/+bug/1103746

It's clear that these issues will continue to arise so long as the
relationship between python-poppler-qt4 and python-sip is not addressed
in the build/packaging process.

I don't know what the situation is upstream in Debian, but it's probably
worth making sure that this issue propagates there to ensure any fix
here is not overwritten by newly-imported Debian packages.

@Hotteterre: the package maintainer has provided a rebuilt python-poppler-qt4
package at:
https://launchpad.net/~ryanakca/+archive/frescobaldi

Note that the version in this PPA is technically superseded by the
version in the official Ubuntu repositories, so you'll have to
specifically ask for the PPA version to be installed via apt-

sudo aptitude install python-poppler-qt=0.16.2-1~precise1~ppa1

It removed the crash for me, does it work for you as well?

Just installed Precise from a daily build and this bug is still present.
The current Debian package in sid seems to have fixed this:

[Bug 880950] [NEW] Broken dependencies for gdc-4.6 package in Oneiric

2011-10-24 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

The gdc-4.6 package is missing a dependency on libphobos2-4.6-dev.
Without this second package (the D standard library) installed, no D
code can be built!

Cf. the comparable dependency for gdc-4.4 on libphobos-4.4-dev.

This issue was observed in Oneiric but I'd be willing to bet it's in
Precise Pangolin as well.

Cannot speak for the PPA you refer to, but the issue is still present in
11.04 which has kipi-plugins 1.9.0 included (1.9.0-1ubuntu2).

[Bug 666882] [NEW] Facebook plugin is unable to get list of albums and always uploads to the same pre-existing album

2010-10-26 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kipi-plugins

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10, and kipi-plugins is version 1.4.0-0ubuntu2.

A first upload to Facebook using kipi-plugins and the
option was successful. However, the drop-down list of albums remains
empty (except for the option), despite attempts to refresh
it, and any further attempts to upload photos merely result in them
being added to the first album kipi-plugins created, not any subsequent
new album I try and create.

This bug is registered in the KDE bugtracker:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=225174 I'm reporting it here
simply to ensure that it's recognized as present in (K)ubuntu 10.10.

The crashes are still taking place on my system, updated just 1 minute

resolved or this issue stems from something else.

I think you're surely right about other apps having a problem with
python-qt4. I had a whole bunch of crash reports on my system today
from KDE apps that use Python: Frescobaldi, Update Manager, the works.
I'll make a more systematic list tomorrow morning, when I expect a new
lot to show up.

[Bug 452210] [NEW] qbzr on Karmic crashes with segmentation fault

2009-10-15 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qbzr

I'm running the standard repository qbzr package on Karmic, along with
the standard repository packages for bzr and other plugins.

When running any of the qbzr commands a segmentation fault results.
This can be tested by running,

  mkdir test
  cd test
  bzr init
  bzr qinfo

Since the qbzr package has not changed recently, I suspect this is not a
fault in qbzr per se but in one of its dependencies, most likely python-
qt4.

Marc -- thanks for confirming this is not a security vulnerability.
Sorry for the unnecessary flag. I'm not experienced with what makes a

[Bug 350993] Re: [needs packaging] ldc: D compiler

2009-09-05 Thread Joseph Wakeling
What's the status of the PPA packages?

I tried to install ldc on Karmic from the PPA, but got an error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ldc: Depends: libconfig++6 which is a virtual package.

Second query: what about Tango for Karmic?

Thanks & best wishes for bringing D to Ubuntu :-)

[Bug 421550] Re: [Karmic] Linux Libertine fonts wrongly defined/set up

2009-09-05 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Is there any movement/progress on this bug?

To reiterate, this is not about whether the TrueType variant has a
fontname of 'Linux Libertine' or 'Linux Libertine O'. It's about the
_inconsistency_ between different faces of the font -- the bold face is
named 'Linux Libertine' whereas the regular, italic and bold italic
faces are named 'Linux Libertine O'.

This needs fixing, _especially_ if there is also going to be an OpenType
package added.

Well, the problem is that the bold variant of the font has the O removed
(which I agree is good:-) but the regular, italic and bold italic
variants don't.

So by all means strip out the O, but it needs to be done for ALL the
font variants!!

Best wishes,

Libertine fonts have some naming problems in the current Karmic package
which they did not have in Jaunty.
