[Bug 1417240] [NEW] Bookmark keywords have lower priority

2015-02-02 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Keywords in bookmarks have a lower priority than URL matches. For
example, suppose I have a keyword named google, and I have recently
visited www.google.com. If I type google into the location bar, it
will match www.google.com and go to that URL. It should have instead
activated the bookmark matching that keyword.

To reproduce this bug:

1) Make a bookmark to www.yahoo.com and give it a keyword of google.
2) Visit www.google.com so it will be in the cache.
3) Open a new tab.
4) In the new tab's location bar, type google and press enter.

Expected result: You go to www.yahoo.com.
Actual result: You go to www.google.com.

Workaround: After typing a keyword, press delete before pressing
enter.

I just updated Firefox to version 35.0.1 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
canonical - 1.0 and the problem was not present previously (in version
34.0). From apt's term.log:

[Bug 429115] [NEW] xmlsimple loads twice when active_support required

2009-09-13 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rails

When you require 'active_support', xmlsimple is loaded twice. This
results in about a page full of warnings.

The cause:
- activesupport/lib/active_support/vendor.rb requires 'lib/xmlsimple.rb'
- activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/hash/conversions.rb requires
'xmlsimple.rb'

In package libxml-simple-ruby, these files both exist. lib/xmlsimple.rb
is a short file that simply loads xmlsimple.rb. Since Ruby sees them as
distinct files, it loads each one when requested by the above
activesupport files.

It appears that lib/xmlsimple.rb is the orphan here and should not be
loaded. Changing vendor.rb to require 'xmlsimple.rb' might be a good
solution.

The warnings that are printed (this is a result of using active-ldap)

[Bug 401557] [NEW] Linux 2.6.28-13.45 does not create hard disk partition device files

2009-07-19 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic 2.6.28-13.45, the
system cannot detect the intended root partition and therefore cannot
boot the system.

The differences between 2.6.28-13 (non-booting) and 2.6.27-14 (OK) are:

1) Device files for the partitions are not created in /dev
2) Disks sda and sdb are reversed. (Due to mounting by UUID, this may not
matter.)

Even with 'debug' provided on the kernel command line, nothing unusual
turns up. The only differences I can see in the two logs are the sda/sdb
swap, and the fact that sata_nv is loaded before pata_amd, whereas with
2.6.27-14, pata_amd was loaded before sata_nv.

Here is an excerpt from the (non-booting) 2.6.28-13 kernel log.

[Bug 396826] Re: NetworkManager erases resolv.conf when ethernet device connected

2009-07-08 Thread Joshua Swink
Thanks for your tips - they did resolve the problem. You might consider
making network-manager depend on resolvconf, since it appears necessary
to prevent NetworkManager from breaking the networking system. I'm a
little surprised that you so quickly marked this Won't Fix - losing
DNS seems to be a major issue from my perspective.

[Bug 396765] [NEW] Lockup when rolling stats

2009-07-07 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: zangband

Zangband locks up on my system when you try to roll stats. After
entering the last weighting, the program consumes 100% CPU but does not
produce any additional output.

To reproduce:

1. start zangband
2. Zangband says [Press any key to continue], so press enter
3. Zangband says Savefile does not exist. -more-, so press enter
4. Press B, T, A to choose a male human warrior
5. Press enter six times to accept a weighting of 50 for each stat

Result: no further output from Zangband and 100% CPU consumption. The
display continues to show the Enter weight for: prompt and the six
stats and the 50 weighting for each.

Pressing CTRL-C will terminate the program. The terminal contains no
output. This happens whether Zangband is started from xterm, rxvt-
unicode, or the console.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

The built-in wired device is eth0, configured in /etc/network/interfaces

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust

2008-12-01 Thread Joshua Swink
For me (using Fluxbox), the solution is to add the following to the
keyboard's InputDevice section in xorg.conf:

Option AutoRepeat 250 30

Turning off AutoAddDevices is not necessary with this change.

To summarize some points:

* With or without AutoAddDevices, something is resetting the keyboard delay and
rate during X startup. This is not desirable. It is a new development.
* I can override the values by manually adding the AutoRepeat setting to
xorg.conf.
* When AutoAddDevices is enabled, using xset r rate... is ineffective.
* When AutoAddDevices is disabled, using xset r rate... does work.

I am not using Gnome or KDE - I use Fluxbox. I suspect that Gnome will
reset the keyboard, so turning of AutoAddDevices is a sufficient
solution for Gnome users. It is not a complete solution for users of
Fluxbox.

[Bug 223783] Re: SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support

2008-11-09 Thread Joshua Swink
Absolutely, the program should work after installing its main package.
That is, it should include some format libraries. There should be a sox-
base package that doesn't include any format libraries, like the main
sox package does now. The sox package should depend on most or all open
formats, and sox-full depend on all available format packages. That way
you wouldn't get surprises like I just installed sox, and it can't even
play .WAV? What gives?!

[Bug 220717] [NEW] segfault on startup

2008-04-22 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rungetty

rungetty 1.2-12 (Hardy 8.04-rc) segfaults on startup when executed from
an upstart script.

/etc/event.d/tty1 contains:

respawn
exec /sbin/rungetty -u root tty1 /usr/local/sbin/netboot_login

This results in a blank screen on tty1 and the following in /etc/syslog:

Apr 22 18:29:08 workstation152-012 kernel: [ 270.653437] rungetty[5758]:
segfault at 0008 eip 08049e15 esp bfbad730 error 4

SEGV signal
Apr 22 18:29:08 workstation152-012 init: tty1 main process ended, respawning

Some other points:
* This configuration worked in Gutsy (rungetty 1.2-10)
* When I copy Gutsy's rungetty (from version 1.2-10) into this Hardy
partition's /sbin, it works
* When I rebuild the 1.2-12 package from source and copy the binary into /sbin,
it works

I was trying to rebuild it with symbols to debug, but as you can see it
does not crash when I build it, so that effort failed.

[Bug 220830] [NEW] hostname.sh exit status 1

2008-04-22 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initscripts

/etc/init.d/hostname.sh has an exit status of 1 even when all is well.

The final line of hostname.sh's do_start() function is:

  [ $VERBOSE != no ]  log_action_end_msg $ES

If VERBOSE is set to no, this results in $? being 1. Nothing else
happens in the script to override that, so the script's overall exit
status is 1.

One solution would be for hostname.sh to end (overall) with exit 0
like many other init scripts.

[Bug 118533] Re: dasher segfaults when changing alphabet

2008-02-20 Thread Joshua Swink
Just wanted to mention that I (original reporter) cannot reproduce this
bug right now because the original system was reinstalled. Dasher on my
other systems is crashing before even getting to this point. So someone
else should attach fonts that are causing their crashes.

However, I don't think the answer lies inside any font file. I think it
has to do with unreadable font files. There are other reports (#139875,
#152609) of pango, crashes, and unreadable font files. I can verify that
Firefox will go haywire when there are unreadable ttf files in
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts. It recovers when the
permissions are fixed (or Pango is disabled with MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1).

Apparently, the msttcorefonts package has at one time or another
installed its files mode 440. Thus they are readable only by root. This
bug MAY be caused by that.

Try the following:

sudo chmod 0440 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/*.ttf

Then run Firefox or Dasher and try changing your fonts.

[Bug 178980] fails to perform mount if /etc/mtab is symlink

2007-12-27 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

When /etc/mtab is a symbolic link to /proc/mounts, fusermount will not
mount anything.

$ sshfs [EMAIL PROTECTED]: remotehost
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
mount: according to mtab, [EMAIL PROTECTED]: is already mounted on
/home/moi/remotehost

$ mount | grep remotehost

This was partly fixed in Fuse 2.7.1, and 2.7.2 looks pretty good. Debian
package Fuse (2.7.1-2) seems to have a good version
(http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/f/fuse/fuse_2.7.1-2/changelog).

[Bug 176198] sun-java6-bin fails to install in a chrooted environment

2007-12-13 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

When you try to install sun-java6-bin while chrooted, libjli.so cannot
be found. The output of dpkg is as follows:

Setting up sun-java6-bin (6-03-0ubuntu2) ...
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.03/bin/java: error while loading shared
libraries: libjli.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Errors were encountered while processing:
 sun-java6-bin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

It's likely that several of the bugs filed against sun-java6-bin
regarding installation/configuration errors can be attributed to the
trouble this package has with chroot. Rather than try to take over one
of those I opened this bug report.

You can work around the configuration problem by temporarily setting
LD_LIBRARY_PATH:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/i386/jli dpkg --configure -a

You still can't *run* java in the chroot environment, but at least it's
installed properly.

[Bug 175339] [patch] init should warn if unusable rootmnt

2007-12-10 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

If rootmnt is not an immediate subdirectory of /, run-init will choke as
it tries to clear out the ramdisk. The reason for this failure wasn't

[Bug 65230] Re: startup messages continue on screen after first login prompt appears

2007-11-24 Thread Joshua Swink
I like your solution Dario (I have not tested it yet). However, I'm not
sure it should be considered a fix. Before applying this workaround,
tty1 was being started earlier. We were forced to delay tty1, and
therefore the appearance of the login prompt, due to rc2's output
messages. But if the logger were working, we could instruct rc2 to
output its messages to the logger only and not to the console. tty1
could be started at the same time as rc2.

We have lengthened the time to the appearance of the prompt, when a
proper solution (a working logger) would not require that sacrifice.

[Bug 164382] adds menu item to Gnome menu

2007-11-21 Thread Joshua Swink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: orage

The /usr/share/applications/xfcalendar.desktop file included with Orage
causes it to be included in the Gnome Applications menu. I assume that's
not a good idea (I'm not familiar with Orage), since it shows up in the
Other menu, and because clicking on that menu item doesn't work.
Running orage from the terminal gets me a tiny oval-shaped window that I
can't interact with very much. I'm not familiar with orage, but I guess
it's for XFCE only?

Both ubuntu-desktop (providing Gnome) and xubuntu-desktop are installed
on this system.

Suggested fix: include OnlyShowIn=XFCE; in xfcalendar.desktop.

[Bug 61760] Re: clutters console with messages during normal work

2007-11-14 Thread Joshua Swink
It's annoying for init scripts to send their output to the console after
the system has started up. The functions in /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh
appear to have been written under the explicit assumption that xdm or a
similar login manager will be used. I can't think of any other reason
that the console would have been given the role of a system log.

Perhaps it would be better for the log_to_console () function to be
enabled somehow by /etc/init.d/gdm, instead of assuming that gdm is
being used.

[Bug 162524] Re: error in cpufreq-detect.sh

2007-11-13 Thread Joshua Swink
/bin/sh is a link to dash in Gutsy, which is sh-compliant, not bash-
compliant. == is a syntax error in bourne shell script.

cpufreq-detect.sh does begin with #! /bin/bash, but it is still run
under /bin/sh. That's because /etc/init.d/rc is executed normally, and
begins with #!/bin/sh, so it runs in dash. Then it sources
/etc/init.d/powernowd which sources /usr/share/powernowd/cpufreq-
detect.sh. Since they are sourced and not executed, they run in the same
process.

Your comment has pointed out another important fix - to avoid confusion,
the first line of cpufreq-detect.sh should be changed to #!/bin/sh.

[Bug 65230] Re: startup messages continue on screen after first login prompt appears

2007-11-07 Thread Joshua Swink
Thanks Jakson... incidentally my workaround of adding -q after rc does
NOT work. Some or all of the scripts in /etc/rc2.d did not get executed
when I did that. Then Gnome started complaining that it failed to
initialize HAL and such.

Here's a workaround that's a bit more upstartish, I think.

* In /etc/event.d/tty1, comment out start on runlevel 2.

* Then change /etc/event.d/rc2 as follows, removing the first exec and
adding the line that says exec start tty1:

/etc/init.d/rc 2
exec start tty1
end script

[Bug 152609] Re: firefox crash on loading website w MS Core Fonts

2007-10-20 Thread Joshua Swink
Same problem here. This bug makes Firefox completely unusable for me in
Gutsy.

I upgraded from 7.04 to 7.10 and Firefox cannot display web pages
anymore. It crashes on startup while trying to display file:///usr/share
/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html.

However, it will run normally until it encounters certain fonts, e.g.:

-
$ echo 'bodypHello!/p/body'  index.html
$ firefox index.html
-

This will allow Firefox to start up normally. Of course, as soon as I
try to view a real web page, it crashes:

At another point, avahi-daemon tried to assign address 169.254.5.160

[Bug 107213] Re: aliases not loaded for terminus font

2007-05-12 Thread Joshua Swink
I can't use these either. After installation:

$ xterm -fn terminus-14
xterm: unable to open font terminus-14, trying fixed

They do work in gnome-terminal, however.
