[Bug 709910] [NEW] SSH VPN document stelist not working in Ubuntu 10.10.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs I have implemented the SSH VPN as explained in the document: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH_VPN/ But at least I can confirm that it is not working with Ubuntu 10.10 as Machine B and Ubuntu 8.04 as Machine A. I managed to make it work by using smaller netmask on the tun0 interfaces in both endpoints smaller. I used netmask 255.255.255.255 in Machine A, like shown below, for an eth0 IP address of 192.168.0.15 in Machine A ethernet: Machine A: iface tun0 inet static pre-up sleep 5 address 192.168.0.15 pointopoint 192.168.0.14 netmask 255.255.255.255 up arp -sD 192.168.0.14 eth0 pub I suspect that if you use the same netmask in Machine A as in the ethernet interface there is a route conflict, but if you use a more restrictive netmask that one will be the preferred route. Also when I bring down the tunnel in Machine B with the command "sudo ifdown tun0" this will bring down the tunnel, but it will not bring down the ssh session. That one you have to kill it manually. Otherwise if you bring again the tunnel up with "sudo ifup tun0" the tunnel creation will fail! To fix this, in the "Automating it all with ifup/down" section in Machine B you have to add a new entry in the very bottom: down pkill -9 -f 'ifup tun0' This will kill the ssh session when you execute "sudo ifdown tun0" in Machine B. It would be good also to include that you should run "sudo ifup tun0" to bring up the tunnel and "sudo ifdown tun0" to bring it down and recover the proper interface configuration and routes in order to continue using Internet just as you were doing in the very moment before the tun0 was brought up. [Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10
the designer: get the source from here http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2008-November/040243.html Uncompress it and go to the folder where you uncompressed, and just go through the standard sequence of commands: #./configure (You will be informed about the dev packages missing, just install them with adept manager. Just run ./configure till you get no complaints) # make # sudo make install The drivers will be installed in: /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers Which in Ubuntu is the wrong place (probably it can be configured with some option in the configure script) Type: # grep -i intel_drv /var/log/Xorg.0.log This command will return the right location of the intel driver in your system. Just make a backup copy of the intel_drv.so and overwrite it with the new one in /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers You need to reboot your system (or at least Xorg) after this. Anyway still the issue is there when you have the desktop effects enabled and it is slower than Hardy by around a 20%. -- Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 77134] ATI drivers 8.28 crashes 3D games
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx When using ATI cards with 3D games and the 8.28.8 driver the memory usage grows huge until the game/application crashes. I have tested it with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (I reached a memory consumption of 2.8GB before the game crashed: 1GB RAM + 1.8GB swap). But it seems to be a known problem. Check for example: http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=405580&forum=72 The easiest way to reproduce is running Cube 2 (Sauerbraten) and after a couple of minutes the systems goes really slow and start to use the swap. With NeverWinter Nights it takes around 1 hour, probably because the use of textures is not so heavy. So I had to migrate to the Mesa 3D drivers and DRI which even in normal situation performs much better. I would suggest to include the Mesa 3D drivers with DRI as an option during Ubuntu installation, specially for those having ATI cards not supported by the latest ATI drivers. Check for example: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml The easiest way to reproduce is running Cube 2 (Sauerbraten) and after a couple of minutes the systems goes really slow and start to use the swap. With NeverWinter Nights it takes around 1 hour, probably because the use of textures is not so heavy. So I had to migrate to the Mesa 3D drivers and DRI which even in normal situation performs much better. I would suggest to include the Mesa 3D drivers with DRI as an option during Ubuntu installation, specially for those having ATI cards not supported by th
[Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well
I am quite a beginner, but I can explain some of what I have learned so far. I cannot tell what is happening in your case for sure, but I can give you some ideas how to check it: - Check with KSystemGuard (you can find it in Start->System, most probably you know already and I am explaining too much... :-)). There you can see the memory usage, including the swap. If you check the Physical memory, you can see that is shared between applications, buffers and caches. This is because Linux tries to make the most use of the non-needed memory for speeding up the system. So it keeps cached the areas being accessed on the Hard Disk lately. Only the "blue" part belongs to the applications. Linux will shrink the cached area if the applications need more memory. So it could well be happening, that when you open more applications, then the cached area is freed and that info is writen to the Hard Disk, so that is why you have heavier use of the disk on those moments, but this should only last for a while and stop after the new applications are opened. You can monitor the evolution of the memory use yourself and see the behaviour in your system. - I don't know how it is really meassured the total load. It can be a combination of the CPU use and Memory use. So if you are running out of memory and there is no swap memory, the load maybe can get that high. I am just guessing. Maybe after installing the swap your load will get lower, since the total amount if virtual memory will be much higher. Good luck. -- Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well https://launchpad.net/bugs/73887 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well
When checking your kern.log, it can be seen that the amount of swap is 0!! So it seems you don't have swap partition or file mounted. You may check it with "swapon -s", if nothing is returned it means you have to check why the swap is not mounted. You can check the last lines of /var/log/messages to get some info. Give a try to fix this first. Actually in my case the kernel uses "voluntary-preemtion" (it seems to be the default in the default generic kernel) and kaffeine seems to work better this way. I have compiled the kernel with "preemption" instead of "voluntary-preemption" and I get small troubles with the multimedia applications, so I went back to "voluntary-preemption" and I have no complaints. If you use full preemption, since the low priority processes need to be kicked out often from the processor, this means that the total performance will be little bit lower. Since your system has only 1 processor, and if you are interested in recompiling the kernel you can get the system a slightly smoother by recompiling the kernel with out SMP (Symetric Multiprocessing, enabled by default on the generic kernel). If you disable SMP then you need to enable "Local APIC support on uniprocessors" (which is just 2 or 3 lines below when using "sudo make menuconfig". I am running Linux in a external USB disk, so I have no possibilities of having DMA. But I noticed some improvements when the disk is swapping if I set SWAP_TOKEN_TIMEOUT=50 (or even 25) in the file thrash.c (which belongs to the kernel sources and usually in /usr/src/linux- source.../mm/), and then recompile the kernel. It seems that the swap does not work so well if you don't have DMA enabled. In normal cases this should not be needed, but if someone is running Ubuntu in an USB HD this may help. I have a 2GHz CPU and 1GB of memory, and the system is running even better than in dapper. I think if you fix the swap thing you will notice it also. Hope it helps. -- Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well https://launchpad.net/bugs/73887 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 44306] Re: Remote file is reloaded each time it's played.
I have experienced the same problem when using Konqueror. After using Firefox as Internet browser, this problem has dissapeared. Most probably because of the Download Manager application included with Firefox seems first to download the file and then call Kaffeine to play the local file and not the remote file. It would be nice that Konqueror had a Donwload Manager with the same capabilities to interact with the rest of applications. -- Remote file is reloaded each time it's played. https://launchpad.net/bugs/44306 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
