[Bug 1024475] Re: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on 12.04 precise, 14.04 trusty, 16.04 xenial
I have upgraded a 16.04 system which worked/booted perfectly with libnss-ldap being used by nsswitch for passwd, shadow and groups to 17.10. The system took a long time to boot, could not bring up networking properly (running dhclient in 90 second intervals, possibly a timeout) and could not start systemd-logind. After using nss_initgroups_ignoreusers as stated by Graham Eames in #14 and adding a new line as suggested by Thomas Werschlein in #24, the system started bhaving normally again. You can use the following command, which I stole from stackexchange, to populate the nss_initgroups_ignoreusers paramter automatically: #NSS_IGNOREUSERS="$(cut -d: -f1 /etc/passwd | sort | tr '\n' ',' | sed 's|,$||')" #sed -i "s|^nss_initgroups_ignoreusers.*|nss_initgroups_ignoreusers ${NSS_IGNOREUSERS}|" /etc/ldap.conf However you will have to add a new line afterwards! In short: This issue affects 17.10, too. Suggestion: libnss-ldap should have a paramter which makes it check the passwd/group files and using names which are in there in the nss_initgroups_ignoreusers paramter automatically. This should also be the default configuration, since systemd is the default also. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1024475 Title: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on 12.04 precise, 14.04 trusty, 16.04 xenial To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libnss-ldap/+bug/1024475/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1723761] [NEW] unattended-upgrade hangs on shutdown when network is required for updates
Public bug reported: Recently an update for flashplugin-installer on xenial was available in the ubuntu repositories. During the installation of this package a blob is downloaded from Adobe servers, which requires network connectivity/internet access. Because the network interface(s) have already stopped when this package is installed, the server cannot be reached, thus blocking the shutdown process until a timeout kills the unattended-upgrades process. On my machines the shutdown takes about 30 minutes in this case. The systemd configuration is standard here, except for a few additional services. A possible fix could be adding After=network-online.target NetworkManager-wait-online.service to After= in the systemd unit file. As a workaround I pinned the flashplugin-installer to -1: #echo >/etc/apt/preferences.d/forbid_flashplugin "\ Package: flashplugin-installer Pin: release * Pin-Priority: -1"; ** Affects: unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1723761 Title: unattended-upgrade hangs on shutdown when network is required for updates To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-upgrades/+bug/1723761/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1428196] [NEW] octave does not plot anything
Public bug reported: GNU Octave, version 3.8.1, Ubuntu 14.04 gnuplot (Version 4.6 patchlevel 4, last modified 2013-10-02, Build System: Linux x86_64) OS: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, Release:14.04 package: octave: Installed: 3.8.1-1ubuntu1 gnuplot: Installed: 4.6.4-2 sample output: octave:1> plot(rand(10)) libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast octave:2> I am running octave on a vnc4server headless system (a data processing server, AMD 64-bit CPU) with a freshly installed system. I am using the XFCE4 desktop environment launched vnc4server. Whenever I try to create a plot (or directly write the plot data into files with the print() function) I am getting this error message. I can, however, run gnuplot alone, I can see the plot window and I can generate plots. Octave 3.8 also "prints" the plot to a graphics file, e.g. in SVG format. But this file is completely white. Likewise, the plot window is displayed, but it remains white. I have just migrated from an ubuntu 12.04 platform to 14.04, and have kept the "old" computer (same type, 64-bit CPU). There, octave 3.2 produces the expected plots. 1) Is there another way to generate plots in octave into files (e.g. svg) that are not affected by this (seemingly graphics driver) problem? 2) How could this be fixed for headless systems running a vnc server without using the physical graphics card output? [Bug 1409865] Re: Ubiquity installer crashes with manual partition layout - looks like a regression
Please excuse, that I did not got to a workaround before reporting this bug. It is indeed possible to have a custom partition layout with the ubiquity installer on the KDE Live CD, when the layout is created manually. If the deisred root ("/") filesystem is btrfs it needs to be completely fresh or created by the installer. The reason for the issue seems to be that I had a custom subvolume ("sv_root") and that I set that subvolume as the default subvolume to mount. Whereas the installer wants to use a subvolume named "@" as the system's root. There seems to be no way to deviate from this during installation. I perfectly understand that names are a question of taste. Yet there is no reason to not support custom subvolume names. To get a working system: * Do not select updates/extras * Open manually created LVM/dm-crypt volumes * Select your volumes - choose to format your /boot-device and the device containing / * Install * The installer crashes when it needs to install the bootloader (at least it looks that way) * Quit the installer * Mount the target into /target with dev, dev/pts, proc, sys, boot; this needs to match the planned layout, which will be put in fstab and crypttab, *EXACTLY* * Add /etc/crypttab to reflect the crypted devices correctly * Edit /etc/fstab to reflect the system correctly * Create /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/cryptroot file; this is the step I missed at first * update-initramfs -u -k all * update-grub * Unmount everything * reboot Thank you for taking the time to read this report. Also does not work for me anymore ever since the update to 14.04. Have to reboot to Windows to use the device. scanimage -L does list the device at first, it also is listed (always) doing an lsusb. [Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
I finally tracked it down, I think. The pthread code tries to load libgcc_s on pthread_exit(), and this dos not work when the effective user was changed -- many daemons switch from root to a restricted user, and that's one way to end up in this problem. If the library is loaded globally for the process before the user is changed, everything works. This is a problem of the 'pthread_exit()' implementation (delayed/on- demand load of libgcc_s) and/or the 'mmap()' implementation in the kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40285 Title: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc-3.3/+bug/40285/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
I was probably wrong -- it seems this is not related to running as restricted user per se. Using ldd shows no reference to libgcc_s in the binary, even if I build from source and explicitly add '-lgcc_s' to the linker command line. strace shows no signs of using libgcc_s unless put into the preload environment. And ntpd always comes to a grinding halt when not run as root unless the preload environment is used. Running as root does not crash just by lucky chance, I think. I get the same results with gcc-4.7 and gcc-4.8 on a freshly installed x64/amd64 Saucy. As a workaround, I put libgcc_s.so.1 into /etc/ld.so.preload, since this should help most applications that run into this problem. Though this only cures the symptom: It's still not clear WHY there is no reference to the SO in the binary... [Bug 40285] Re: libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
I have/had trouble with ntpd on saucy, it simly stopped working after a while with he mentioned error message. Running directly as root works fine; running with a reduced user account does not. Setting LD_PRELOAD works. It seems that the user separation / priviledge dropping interferes with the delayed load of the SO. Since several applications seem to be affected, some of them also using special/reduced user accounts, I'm not sure if this qualifies as a build or a setup bug, or something entirely different.

[Bug 1184154] Re: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup
Hi, yesterday, I got the new upstream kernel (PL 45) by normal means unto my system (I did not have time to install it manually before). The result is, that my system hangs even further. Now it hangs before the X environment is fully started. It seams that the X server is started partially, but no desktop shows up. I get some weird graphics display (one line of graphic -- a part of the desktop?? -- over the screen, the rest stays black) and the system hangs. Now I have two kernel versions (3.2.44 and 3.2.45) on the system, that don't work! Really weird, that nobody else has troubles. What is going on? [Bug 1184154] Re: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected staging ** Description changed: My system hangs when I startup. The login screen shows up, but when I try to enter the password, after 1-3 chars the system hangs (keyboard and mouse freeze, system does not respond to anything except reset). I now started the system with the older 3.2.0-41 kernel and it works. I also attach a dmesg-file from a previous startup. The only thing I noticed myself are the odd NFSD-messages at the end, which I did not find in the newer dmesg (with patch 41 kernel).
