On darwin, we trigger a LaunchDaemon in startx to do some privileged actions for xinit (like creating /tmp/.X11-unix). How is this currently handled on other OSs? Still as an init script? No, you need whatever app you're using to get the info about screen size
from somewhere it has a decent chance of being correct (randr), instead
of Display{Height,Width}MM.
