[Bug 1652585] Re: Fonts are borken after suspend/resume somtimes

2016-12-26 Thread Kai Blin
I can give that a try, but I'm not sure I can reproduce this issue in
Unity. Do the daily builds have the option of running XFCE? Also, it
could be a while until I can confirm this, I don't have an easy test
case.

[Bug 1652585] [NEW] Fonts are borken after suspend/resume somtimes

2016-12-26 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, when coming out of a suspend and getting past the light
locker screen, font rendering broken. Application windows are missing
most but not all letters, and text for icons on the desktop is blurry.
Already open terminal windows won't have any text, but sometimes opening
a new terminal window does have working text for the terminal, even
though the text in the menu bar is broken.

Programs like Thunderbird often still display text unless they are
forced to re-render the window, at which point the fonts also disappear.
Firefox still renders web pages but is missing the text in the menu
bars.

This seems similar to bug #1434351 to me, but I was asked by Christopher
Penalver to open a new bug, so here we go.

I'm currently running with an xorg.conf suggested as a workaround for
#1434351, the bug itself manifested with the default Xorg settings (no
xorg.conf file). But as the bug only occurs occasionally, it's too early
to say if the workaround actually works.

[Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-12-24 Thread Kai Blin
It looks like for me the workaround from comment #5 causes even more
immediate rendering issues. E.g. terminal windows being overlapped by
elements from another window below. Now trying the workaround from
comment #7.

[Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-12-24 Thread Kai Blin
I managed to get through the unreadable pop-ups by clicking on random
buttons until it worked. Please note that the xorg.conf reported above
is one I just added to try the workaround mentioned in comment #5, I did
not have any xorg.conf set up at the time the bug appeared. I just
thought I'd give reporting the error another try before rebooting to get
a useable system back.

[Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-12-24 Thread Kai Blin
This still happens. Unfortunately, calling `apport-collect -p xorg
1434351` fails with a popup that is unreadable because fonts are not
rendering, so I have no idea what it is complaining about.

[Bug 1472215] [NEW] node-less fails to run

2015-07-07 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

The hashbang line of /usr/bin/lessc is wrong, causing the execution of lessc
to fail with
bash: /usr/bin/lessc: /usr/bin/nodejs: bad interpreter: No such file or
directory

node-less depends on the nodejs package, which ships the node binary as
/usr/bin/node, not as /usr/bin/nodejs

However, both changing the hashbang line to #!/usr/bin/node or creating
a nodejs symlink in /usr/bin just causes an error to be thrown by lessc:

kai@:~$ lessc

FWIW, still broken on 14.04, the workaround of manually fiddling with
the NetworkManager config still helps.

Happens to me on 14.04 as well. As I don't have a hardware switch for
the WiFi, I just sudo killall NetworkManager, which also fixes it for
a while.

[Bug 1146963] Re: grub installer fails with fatal error on btrfs

2013-03-14 Thread Kai Blin
Interesting. I wasn't aware the installer changed the partition table
for me. That might need to be made more obvious. Also, I've now
reformatted /dev/sda1 to be ext4 instead of btrfs and everything works
fine, without having to create the bios_grub partition.

[Bug 1015935] Re: SWAT segfaults when trying to view full configuration

2012-06-25 Thread Kai Blin
Ok, this actually is a bug in libpam-smbpass, not in swat.

When recompiling the packages with debug info, the backtrace from swat
is:

#0 0xb7217600 in ?? ()
#1 0xb7d7923c in _talloc_free () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtalloc.so.2

#9 0x80079c4c in main (argc=1, argv=0xb824) at web/swat.c:1581

Note the call to close_iconv_convenience() in frame 3.

Now, when looking at libpam-smbpass.so symbols with nm, this gives the
following iconv-related output:

0008fe20 t close_iconv_convenience
0008fd4c T get_iconv_convenience
00207a80 B global_iconv_convenience

000a0686 T smb_iconv_open_ex
000a0600 t smb_iconv_t_destructor
000a0389 t sys_iconv

Again, note the t close_iconv_convenience, which as far as I understand says
that libpam-smbpass contains close_iconv_convenience in it's text section, so
there's a copy of that call in libpam-smbpass.
Now, if libpam-smbpass is loaded, it seems like swat uses the wrong version of
that call, and things go wrong.
If you comment out the libpam-smbpass line in /etc/pam.d/common-auth, The crash
is gone.

[Bug 1015935] Re: SWAT segfaults when trying to view full configuration

2012-06-23 Thread Kai Blin
Right, our bug reporter investigated this a bit further, and it turns out that
removing libpam-smbpass fixes the crash, and reinstalling libpam-smbpass causes
the crash to happen again.
This also explains why starting swat without the authentication check doesn't
trigger the crash.
As a next step, I'll install libpam-smbpass for a from source build to see if
_that_ reproduces the crash.

[Bug 1015935] [NEW] SWAT segfaults when trying to view full configuration

2012-06-21 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

When running swat on a 32bit 12.04 install, swat segfaults when the user
clicks on the Full View button in the configuration menu. This only
happens on the 32bit install, the 64bit install seems fine.

This was reported to upstream under
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8999 but can only be
reproduced with the distro packages.

swat crashes with the following backtrace (sorry for the missing debug
symbols, the samba-dbg package doesn't seem to help gdb getting debug
symbols for swat):

A relatively straightforward way to reproduce the crash in gdb is running gdb
swat, and then typing in
GET /viewconfig HTTP/1.1
Authorization: Basic base64 of user:pass

then grab the xsrf and xsrf_time values in the form displayed...

GET /viewconfig?full_view=Full+Viewxsrf=xsrfxsrf_time=xsrf_time HTTP/1.1
Authorization: Basic base64 of user:pass

and the segfault happens.
With the current v3-6-test git HEAD from the samba git, this doesn't happen.
The last time this code was touched upstream was in 2009, so I'm not sure a
code change caused this.

You cannot reproduce the crash if you start swat with -a to skip the
authentication logic, so you need to set up a root password for this to
work.

(gdb) bt

[Bug 790863] Re: Unable to start lxc container after update to 2.6.32-32

2011-11-09 Thread Kai Blin
Earlier this year the LTS-backport kernels didn't have a valid header
package, thus breaking dkms-based kernel modules, see bug #824080 . It
took over a month to fix that, not giving much of an impression that
LTS-backport kernels are really supported.

[Bug 847828] [NEW] linux-headers-2.6.35-30-generic fails to install because linux-headers-2.6.35-30 is a virtual package

2011-09-12 Thread Kai Blin

about broken dependencies for linux-headers-2.6.35-30, which is a virtual

[Bug 302148] Re: Installing wine starts winbindd as a daemon

2011-02-11 Thread Kai Blin
Some comments as the author of the Wine code that makes use of ntlm_auth
here.

First and foremost, ntlm_auth works just fine without winbindd running
in client mode. This is the mode that most of the Wine users that need
NTLM auth will use. A good use case would be using Outlook against
Exchange with crypto enabled. winbindd is only needed if the user is
trying to authenticate users, for example for running RPC servers.

That said, most Wine users probably run games and not Outlook, so they
never use NTLM (there's games and IM clients that support NTLM, but
they're probably a minority). I don't have the impression that the
average Ubuntu user is running in an office environment. So while in my
opinion the real cause for the breakage is that installing winbindd
fiddles with your PAM settings, I guess the best fix that'll hurt the
least number of users is to downgrade winbind from Recommends to
Suggests. I find it regrettable that GUI package managers automagically
pull in Recommends and never mention Suggests, but that is probably done
to make life easier for the average user as well.

To sum up, while the view that ntlm_auth is useless without winbind is
wrong, I guess the suggested fix is the least pain for the least amount
of work.

2010-12-12 Thread Kai Blin
I've switched email clients months ago, so I'm not really affected by
this anymore. I'm certainly not interested enough to risk a well-running
10.04 LTS system just to see if a mail client I don't use is still
broken. Feel free to close this bug if bugs that only exist on 10.04 are
not desired in this bug tracker anymore.

[Bug 624911] [NEW] btrfs: unable to delete empty directory

2010-08-26 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

When trying to delete an empty directory on a btrfs partition I'm
getting the following error:

r...@ceph-mds:~# rm -rf /data/old/
rm: cannot remove `/data/old/broken': Directory not empty

However:

r...@ceph-mds:~# ls -la /data/old/broken/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2010-08-26 07:29 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12 2010-08-26 22:10 ..

Also, I don't fully understand why rm -rf would care about non-empty
directories.

I've since upgraded the kernel twice with the maverick updates, so I
also rebooted twice, no change. So it's not some file that was deleted
but is still opened by some process. I've tried btrfsck, but that didn't
complain either.

Currently trying if I can reproduce this on another machine.
Unfortunately /data simply is part of the / partition, so reformatting
would be a bit annoying. Can do if needed, of course.

[Bug 624911] Re: btrfs: unable to delete empty directory

2010-08-26 Thread Kai Blin
Ok, this is reproduceable with the latest ceph git tree.

If you build the ceph sources, and then call mkcephfs -c ceph.conf with
the osd configuration pointing to /data/osd0, you'll end up with
/data/osd0/current, which can't be deleted.

It can be renamed, making it end up with the filename the previous post
shows. I was using the same series of commands before.

[Bug 613438] [NEW] pgp-signing fails with wrong password warning without ever prompting for a password

2010-08-04 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sylpheed

As said in $subject, when trying to send a signed email using sylpheed,
an error box pops up saying that signing the message failed. When
running sylpheed from the command line, the following error can be
found:

(sylpheed:1084): Sylpheed-WARNING **: pgp_sign(): encryption and signing
failed: Bad passphrase

However, there never was a prompt for a passphrase. As I'm using the
identical sylpheed config on another 10.04 machine and signing works
just fine there, I'm a bit at a loss why it fails on this machine.

reproduce on the current kernel.

[Bug 392548] Re: networking broken after system returns from suspend to disk

2010-03-20 Thread Kai Blin
Ok, I've managed to get a box installed, but I still can't test this. :(
Grub2 seems to try to use some graphics setting the VM doesn't support, and the
box fails to start correctly after a pm-hibernate. Thanks to Grub2 it's
impossible to see the error message, and of course after the wake-up fails you
need to do a full restart, which fixed the network problem before.

I've tried installing a Lucid-VM, but the installer seems to get stuck
after switching to framebuffer, so I can't test this right now. Once I
figured out how to fall back to the old-style ncurses installer for a
server install, I can test.

[Bug 502149] Re: winbindd service and ntlm_auth

2010-01-04 Thread Kai Blin
Being the person responsible for the Wine dependency, here's my take on this:
ntlm_auth without winbindd is technically useless for about every use case
besides the (still) limited way Wine uses it. Given that most package managers
go and install recommends, you'd then get (at best) Wine recommending ntlm_auth
recommending winbindd, which (for all my understanding of packaging) would
still leave you with winbindd being installed.

In the future (depending on how soon I get around to work on this
again), the coupling between Wine and the Samba Authentication service
(aka winbindd) will increase. Given that most other distros also package
ntlm_auth with the winbind package, I'm not convinced Ubuntu should
deviate from the packaging single-handedly. Of course that's the Ubuntu
packager's decision, not mine. I'd say if winbindd starting up really
bothers you more than the fact that Wine is installed but never used,
I'd suggest you just update-rc.d -f winbindd remove (or however you do
the same with the new system).

[Bug 402188] Re: gvim complains about gtk_form_set_static_gravity: assertion `static_gravity_supported' failed in the shell it's started from

2009-11-15 Thread Kai Blin
Philip, that PS is kind of pointless.
You can safely assume that people who do experience the bug do want to run gvim
not vim, or they wouldn't care about this bug. Last but not least, even if
you're running gvim from the K menu or any other setup that doesn't display
stderr, output from stderr ends up in ~/.xsession-errors. That file just keeps
growing and growing, and because it's a . file, you tend to forget about it
when trying to figure out where all your disk space on /home went.

Launchpad lacks a setting that will tell people that this bug will be
fixed for 10.04 but not for 9.10, so the folks using 9.10 will stop
posting affects me too reports. ( By the way, should the this bug
affects me too link on the top of the page be made more obvious? )

[Bug 472786] [NEW] lighttpd shuts down with any notice in the log file when certain clients try to connect

2009-11-03 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lighttpd

I've got a lighttpd set up that basically proxies to a couple of other
servers. During all my testing, it has been working just fine, but I
seem to have one user who seems to make the server crash when trying to
access it. I'm still investigating as to what browser that person is
using, but so far the lighttpd process has been gone reliably when that
user tried to connect. No logfile entries to hint at what happened,
either.

[Bug 468020] [NEW] dropbear does not handle IPv6

2009-11-01 Thread Kai Blin

On Ubuntu 9.04, the dropbear ssh daemon does not handle IPv6
connections. This applies to version 0.52-1 of the package. However,

there as well.

2009-10-30 Thread Kai Blin
I'm seeing this on 2.6.31.4 of the beagleboard armel kernel from Launchpad.
However, this might be a false alarm on my side, pointing at a hardware issue
instead. I've reformatted the partition to ext3 and I'm still seeing similar
effects. This is an external USB drive, which might be one part of the issue.
Sorry about the noise, this bug looked like a perfect match.

[Bug 453579] Re: corruption of large files reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4

2009-10-29 Thread Kai Blin
Steve, I can confirm that in my setup.

Test is easy, as described by Scott.

I've copied over the first iso I found on my PC to my fileserver running
an ext4 /data partition. Then I had some fun with md5sum:

k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
138468d380b84e6b9e9a8648efb97143 en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
d6b2bc09fc4df1876005f20b62364f6e en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ sync
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
91cf62eee1e159774c8acee03cf88f39 en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
d11a45c61466f2b22757e0e449e2fe90 en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
f8e682be3590d48e0c266d15a804e3af en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
d11a45c61466f2b22757e0e449e2fe90 en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
k...@woodstock:/data/iso$ md5sum en_win_xp_pro_n.iso
d11a45c61466f2b22757e0e449e2fe90 en_win_xp_pro_n.iso

Note that it seems to stabilized on d11a45c61466f2b22757e0e449e2fe90
after bouncing off from there once. Also note that calling sync seems to
have no effect on the bug.

That's certainly a fun one.

Not a duplicate of bug 434503. I had bug 434503 before, and after using the
workaround described there, I now get this bug.
Notice the different exit status of 10 vs exit status 3 on bug 434503.

[Bug 392828] Re: security.ubuntu.com not reachable via IPv6

2009-07-22 Thread Kai Blin
Assuming you don't have IPv6 networking yet, here is a short instruction
on how to get connected.

Use a tunnel broker like SixXS to acquire an IPv6 tunnel, or maybe your
provider can actually hook you up with IPv6 (I'm told the dutch provider
XS4All actually offers that, mine doesn't). To get started with SixXS,
see http://www.sixxs.net/faq/account/?faq=10steps for 10 easy steps to
IPv6.

Once you have your tunnel set up, you need to apply for an IPv6 network range,
as you need a separate machine to test IPv6 only networking if you run a
tunnel. SixXS provides documentation on how to set up the network range.
A virtual machine in KVM works just fine, that's what I'm using myself, I have
not tried with VirtualBox and VMware can't do IPv6 for all I know. Once your
IPv6 only machine is set up and can e.g. ping6 ipv6.google.com, just turn off
the ipv4 addresses. Verify that you don't have an IPv4 route to the internet
anymore. Now try to apt-get update and you will find that security.ubuntu.com
is unreachable.

[Bug 392548] [NEW] networking broken after system returns from suspend to disk

2009-06-26 Thread Kai Blin
Public bug reported:

Running an ubuntu 9.04 server install in an ubuntu 8.04 kvm with bridged
networking.
After installing the pm-utils package in the guest, pm-hibernate works.
Once the guest wakes up from suspend, no data can be sent over the ethernet.
Simply reloading the networking via /etc/init.d/network reload does not fix
the issue, only a reboot seems to help. The interface still is up and has
associated IP addresses, but getting data out does not seem to work.

From the host side of things, networking of e.g. Windows guests works fine
after they return from a suspend. However the Windows guests were not
configured to use virt-io networking.
