I'm not sure why apt keeps calling grub, but something in grub is broken. I've
never messed with grub in any way, nor has this machine been used for anything
other than basic web browsing and software development.

[Bug 1876280] [NEW] Doesn't show iso images

2020-05-01 Thread Karl Stenerud
Public bug reported:

I downloaded a pop-os iso image, but usb creator won't show it. The only
way I could get it recognized was to rename the xyz.iso filename to
xyz.img.

usb-creator 0.3.3
Ubuntu 20.04

Steps:
- Download
https://pop-iso.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/20.04/amd64/intel/5/pop-os_20.04_amd64_intel_5.iso
- Open usb creator (gtk in my case)

The iso won't be visible, nor will it show it even if you click "other"
and select it manually.

- mv pop-os_20.04_amd64_intel_5.iso pop-os_20.04_amd64_intel_5.img

After changing the extension to "img", it will be visible to usb
creator.

[Bug 1821692] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.25-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-03-27 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Stephan,

I'm seeing bind errors in the log:

2019-03-25T12:27:33.728958Z 0 [ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port:
Address already in use
2019-03-25T12:27:33.728963Z 0 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server
running on port: 3306 ?
2019-03-25T12:27:33.728974Z 0 [ERROR] Aborting

This would happen if you already have another copy of mysql or mariadb
from another source installed and running on your system. Please check
to make sure you've purged all non-ubuntu instances before trying the
ubuntu package.

Heartbeat has been abandoned since 2015 (ref http://www.linux-

[Bug 1810583] Re: Daily cron restarts network on unattended updates but keepalived .service is not restarted as a dependency

2019-03-20 Thread Karl Stenerud
There is a fix upstream for this issue in keepalived 2.0. I'm looking
into what would be required to backport the fix. In the meantime, there
is a workaround that I hope will be sufficient for your needs, as
discovered by https://chr4.org/blog/2019/01/21/make-keepalived-play-
nicely-with-netplan-slash-systemd-network/

You'll need to create a dummy interface, and then assign the virtual IP
to that. Here's an example using a VM, which will generate a virtual ip
of x.y.z.3. You can set your own last quad by changing the last part of
the sed command '\1.3/g' to .4 or .215 or whatever:

multipass launch daily:bionic --name tester && multipass exec tester --
sudo su

Inside the VM:

apt update && apt dist-upgrade -y && apt install -y keepalived &&
echo "vrrp_instance VI_1 {
virtual_router_id 33
state MASTER
interface ens3

virtual_ipaddress {
$(ip addr | grep 'inet ' | grep global | head -1 | sed 's/.*inet
\([0-9]*\.[0-9]*\.[0-9]*\)\..*/\1.3/g') dev keepalived0
}
}" >/etc/keepalived/keepalived.conf &&
echo "[NetDev]
Name=keepalived0
Kind=dummy" >/lib/systemd/network/90-keepalived.netdev &&
service systemd-networkd restart &&
service keepalived start

# There will be a new IP address x.y.z.3/32 added to keepalived0
ip addr

# Restart networkd. The IP address doesn't get destroyed like it did in the bug
report
systemctl restart systemd-networkd
ip addr

# Restart keepalived. The IP address gets rebuild the same as before
systemctl restart keepalived
ip addr

  Since two weeks we lost our keepalived VRRP address on on our of

  shouldn't this be in the default install of the systemd service of

2019-03-18 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi dierre,

I'm seeing the following error message in the logs:

error processing archive
/tmp/apt-dpkg-install-EPmbpq/114-libldap-2.4-2_2.4.46+dfsg-5ubuntu1.1_i386.deb
(--unpack):
 trying to overwrite shared '/usr/share/doc/libldap-2.4-2/changelog.Debian.gz',
which is different from other instances of package libldap-2.4-2:i386

Generally, this happens when you've installed a different version from a
non-ubuntu archive (perhaps manually built?), and it hasn't been fully
uninstalled yet. Check to make sure you don't have an existing ldap
installation. Ultimately, if you can't manage to fix it with apt, you
can always manually delete /usr/share/doc/libldap-2.4-2.

I'm marking this as invalid since it's a system configuration issue, but
if you feel there's more to it, please give more info about the problem
and change the status back to "new".

[Bug 1819033] Re: php7.0-fpm_7.0.33-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 update stop fpm service for 10 minutes

2019-03-12 Thread Karl Stenerud
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

- Upgrade processes that take too long will result in the service not
- being restarted.
+ Since php7.0 still follows the compat level 9 defaults of stopping the
+ service at the start of an upgrade, and then starting it again at the
+ end of the upgrade, there is potentially a long period of the service

2019-03-06 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Johan,

This looks like this is somewhat related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+bug/45234

Are you using the standard init script and configuration for sshd? try
running the following to make sure your configuration is correct:

sshd -t

Once that's done, you can manually create the directory it needs:

sudo mkdir /var/run/sshd

I'm marking as invalid because this looks like a configuration problem.
If it's not a configuration issue, please change the status back to
"new".

[Bug 1815663] Re: package php7.0-common 7.0.33-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 134

2019-02-21 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Dave,

Looking at your dmesg, there are a lot of odd segfaults happening all
over the place on your system [1]. You also have libgnutls.so in a
nonstandard location:

[59588.892396] audit: type=1400 audit(1549974909.542:45):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="/usr/sbin/cups-browsed"
name="/usr/local/lib/libgnutls.so.30.13.1" pid=23513 comm="cups-browsed"
requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=0 ouid=0

Considering perl is normally very stable, and considering the irrational
behavior of your system, there's not enough evidence to conclude that
this is a bug. Untangling the steps that destabilized your system
(overwriting software with nonstandard versions maybe?) will be
difficult at best. You may want to consider reinstalling your system.

If the bug persists after installing a fresh system, please change the
bug status back to "new".

[Bug 1816513] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.25-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-02-20 Thread Karl Stenerud
Thank you for taking the time to report bugs and help make Ubuntu
better.

This looks like a local configuration issue rather than a bug in the
software itself (I'm seeing references to an old non-ubuntu mysql
package). Please check your configuration to make sure it's correct. If
you need help configuring, you can get community support in the Ubuntu
channels on freenode.net, or in http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

I'm marking this "Invalid" because it doesn't appear to be a bug, but if
I'm wrong, please change it back to "New" and add some more info to
point me in the right direction. Use this link as a guide:

I've checked on tmux-plugin-manager and as it is in universe, it isn't
directly supported by Canonical. If you would like to investigate
yourself and put in a fix, I can help guide you through the process.

[Bug 1815087] [NEW] apt dist-upgrade freezes on disco daily

2019-02-07 Thread Karl Stenerud
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

Attempting to do a dist-upgrade on a disco container causes it to hang.
This has been a problem on and off for about a year:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1037431/receiving-the-error-snapd-snap-
repair-service-is-a-disabled-or-a-static-unit-n

[Test Case]

lxc launch ubuntu-daily:disco tester && lxc exec tester bash
apt update && apt dist-upgrade -y

It gets to snap and then freezes:

Setting up snapd (2.37.2+19.04) ...
Installing new version of config file
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.snapd.snap-confine.real ...
snapd.failure.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.
snapd.snap-repair.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.

[Regression Potential]

This seems to be intermittent on certain snapd upgrades. It's hard to
say how it would be affected. Since it's a standard container upgrade,
it can affect all disco containers.

Hi Prasanna,

Do you have repro steps that don't involve fetching from github? We can
only really work with setups that use ubuntu repositories, because
there's no way to tell how software from outside is set up.

[Bug 1814632] Re: package mysql-server 5.7.25-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: problemi con le dipendenze - lasciato non configurato

2019-02-06 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Lukes,

Thank you for taking the time to report bugs and help make Ubuntu
better.

This looks like a local configuration issue rather than a bug in the
software itself. Please check your configuration to make sure it's
correct. I've noticed the following in your logs:

2019-02-05T07:46:45.514429Z 2 [Note] Access denied for user
'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

Please check the upgrading instructions from
https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/upgrading-from-previous-
series.html

If you need help configuring, you can get community support in the
Ubuntu channels on freenode.net, or in
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community, or from the mysql community
pages.

I'm marking this "Invalid" because it doesn't appear to be a bug, but if
I'm wrong, please change it back to "New" and add some more info to
point me in the right direction. Use this link as a guide:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

[Bug 1809576] Re: 18.04 seems to have a broken openvpn server configuration (template)

2019-01-25 Thread Karl Stenerud
Actually, it turns out that openvpn@.service DOES demonize, but for some
reason it makes no difference to the behavior. Regardless of whether
--daemon is present or not, the service operated correctly in my tests.

I'll leave the status of this bug "invalid" even though technically
--daemon is incorrect, because the actual behavior of openvpn is correct
regardless of the setting.

[Bug 1606331] Re: StringIndexOutOfBoundsException - Tomcat8.0.32

2019-01-23 Thread Karl Stenerud
Correct behavior verified as follows:

lxc launch ubuntu-daily:xenial tester && lxc exec tester bash
apt update && apt dist-upgrade -y && apt install -y tomcat8 && mkdir -p
/var/lib/tomcat8/webapps/test && echo '<%@ page

$Title$

<%
Class.forName("org");
%>

' >/var/lib/tomcat8/webapps/test/test.jsp &&
service tomcat8 restart &&
curl localhost:8080/test/test.jsp

This results in the following erroneous jsp exception:

java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 3

Hi Diego,

I've tried reproducing this error in a test environment, but upgrades
and fresh installs seem to work without error.

Can you check to see if there actually is a clamav directory in
/var/log? I wonder if there might be a permissions or ownership issue...

/var/log should look like this:

drwxrwxr-x  9 root syslog 4096 Jan 23 12:13 log

Hi,

Your /var/log/mysql/error.log has the following: [ERROR] [FATAL] InnoDB:
Table flags are 0 in the data dictionary but the flags in file ./ibdata1
are 0x4000!

Are you attempting to open a mysql 8 database with mysql 5? I don't
think that's supported. Make sure all traces of mysql 8 are removed
(including databases) before installing mysql 5.

I'm marking this as invalid for now, but if this error really is caused
during normal operation of mysql 5 without interference from an old
mysql 8, please let us know and reopen the ticket. In such a case you
should probably also check on the mysql bug tracker

[Bug 1811610] Re: latest strongswan update is broken in 18.10

2019-01-16 Thread Karl Stenerud
The problem comes when a file's existence or non-existence affects how a
package behaves (such as /etc/defense-
package/autorun/launch_nuclear_missiles). If the user removes such a
file to control package behavior, and then an update re-adds the files,
it would change the package behavior in a way the user doesn't want,
each and every time the package gets a security update.

So, since we can't know if the file removal was intentional or not,
debian packaging errs on the side of caution, and doesn't re-add the
file.

In this particular case, of course, a missing conf file breaks the whole
thing, but debian packaging doesn't have the level of sophistication to
know the difference.

As to what actually caused the conf file to go missing in your case,
there are unfortunately no logs or traces to help track down what
actually happened, so unless it happens again in future and we can get
more info, we don't really have a way to find a solution :/

[Bug 1809576] Re: 18.04 seems to have a broken openvpn server configuration (template)

2019-01-15 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi David,

Thanks for the report. I've had a look at the code being used in 18.04,
and it appears that the required support code is already applied in
bionic. see
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/tree/src/openvpn/init.c?h=applied/ubuntu
/bionic-devel#n32 and
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/tree/src/openvpn/init.c?h=applied/ubuntu
/bionic-devel#n652

So type notify should be the correct approach.

I'm marking this bug as invalid, but if I've missed something, please
change it back to new and let me know where I've gone wrong.

[Bug 1809598] Re: 4.15.0-43 installed but fails to boot to desktop

2019-01-15 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi, thanks for the bug report!

Unfortunately, there isn't really enough information available for us to
do an investigation. We would normally need hardware information, logs
(from the few times it did boot), any special configuration or
customization (i.e. does it do this on a freshly installed + upgraded
system?).

As you've moved on to a new OS, we can't proceed any further. I'll leave
this bug here in case other people encounter similar difficulties and
wish to report anything further they know.

2019-01-09 Thread Karl Stenerud
samba 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.6
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-
0ubuntu2.6) in the proposed pocket was used for verification.

Follow the testing steps in
https://code.launchpad.net/~kstenerud/ubuntu/+source/samba/+git/samba/+merge/359602
except instead of adding the PPA, add the sources list entry:

[Bug 1810926] Re: initscript status check is too fragile

2019-01-09 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Hans,

I've tested this as follows:

lxc exec ubuntu:xenial tester && lxc exec tester bash

apt update && apt dist-upgrade -y && apt install -y haproxy
service haproxy restart
chmod -x /usr/sbin/haproxy
service haproxy restart
Job for haproxy.service failed because the control process exited with error
code. See "systemctl status haproxy.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
root@tester:~# /etc/init.d/haproxy status
root@tester:~# echo $?
0

The issue isn't the pidfile check, but rather the executable check on
line 21:

test -x $HAPROXY || exit 0

Commenting that line yields:

root@tester:~# /etc/init.d/haproxy status
● haproxy.service - HAProxy Load Balancer
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/haproxy.service; enabled; vendor preset:
enabled)

Jan 09 12:56:15 tester systemd[1]: haproxy.service: Failed with result

root@tester:~# echo $?

So /etc/init.d/haproxy needs a nonzero return code on line 21.

Can you check if this is the case upstream as well?

[Bug 1790554] Re: package bacula-director 9.0.6-1build1 failed to install/upgrade: installed bacula-director package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2019-01-08 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Bob,

Most likely the problem stems from residual config files from your
previous installation, but it's hard to tell without certain log files.
The relevant logs haven't been automatically attached to this ticket, so
you'll need to fetch them yourself.

Please attach any logfiles that are in /var/log/bacula

Also, please run the following:

service bacula-director start

Followed by:

journalctl -xe

And attach the result.

[Bug 1810583] Re: Daily cron restarts network on unattended updates but keepalived .service is not restarted as a dependency

2019-01-07 Thread Karl Stenerud
Hi Tom, thanks for bringing up this issue!

As this package needs to work with both server and desktop editions, I'm
not sure how this would work with networkmanager...

Would you be able to put together a simple VM test case that
demonstrates the issue and fix, and ensures things still work as a
whole?

+ [Original Description]

  ---

  Tomcat 8.0.32 has a known and corrected bug

  https://bz.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=58999

  which in some cases prevents a webapp from executing. I have encountered
  this error. The fix will be to place a later version of Tomcat8 into
  the Ubuntu 16.04 repository.

  I encountered this error using:

  OpenVPMS 1.8.1 (veterinary practice management webapp)
  MySQL 5.7.13
  Open-jdk 1.8.0_91
  Tomcat 8.0.32
  mysql-connector-java-5.1.39

  The webapp in this case (OpenVPMS) runs under tomcat7 but not under this
  specific version of Tomcat (8.0.32). Instead, tomcat throws a
  404-/openvpms error. The relevant portion of the tomcat log is:

  Caused by: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of
range: 3

Hi Hamish,

Yes, please do follow upstream to find the source of the problem, open a
bug there if necessary, and post a link here + whatever other distro is
affected. It will make things easier on everyone to coordinate a fix
across platforms :)

[Bug 1806710] [NEW] Make php7.3 depend on pcre3 instead of pcre2

2018-12-04 Thread Karl Stenerud
Public bug reported:

pcre2 is still in universe, and may not be in main for some time.

In order to update to the latest php, add a patch to make php7.3 require
pcre3 (which is currently in main) instead of pcre2.

[Bug 1806060] Re: Newer versions of killall (Ubuntu 18.04+) fail when signal specified in capitals

2018-12-03 Thread Karl Stenerud
** Changed in: psmisc (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Uppercase signal names are no longer accepted by killall; only lowercase
+ signal names are accepted. The documentation still shows signal names in
+ uppercase.
+
+ This is a regression as of bionic.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ # killall -int asdf
+ asdf: no process found
+ # killall -INT asdf
+ Usage: killall [ -Z CONTEXT ] [ -u USER ] [ -y TIME ] [ -o TIME ] [ -eIgiqrvw
]
+[ -s SIGNAL | -SIGNAL ] NAME...
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ This is a regression, and so there would be no regression potential in a
+ fix.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
  Newer versions of killall (Ubuntu 18.04+) display usage when the signal
  is passed like:

  killall -INT

  and instead require it to be passed as:

  killall -int

  In previous versions from Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04, this doesn't happen.
  Is this a bug or a feature change? If so perhaps it should be noted in
  the usage information? The man page suggests capitals with "-SIGNAL".
  but that doesn't work any more.

  Hamish
