[Bug 1962565] Re: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system
attached you can find a screenshot of htop after deleting multiple files. The ram usage does not seem to be dependent of the files deleted (no apparent difference between deleting 200 files totaling 75mb and 500 files totaling 700mb) In this instance there were almost 40 processes of the gnome-shell running "alt+f2" "r" cleared the used ram but did not reduce the number of gnome-shell processes. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot from 2022-03-01 10-54-41.jpg" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1962565/+attachment/5564430/+files/Screenshot%20from%202022-03-01%2010-54-41.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1962565 Title: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1962565/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1962565] [NEW] gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system
Public bug reported: sometimes the system uses 11GB of 16GB ram for 10+ gnome-shell processes. It seemingly occurs as soon as deleting files via the file manager. It occurred for me when trying to delete 500 files with a total of 700mb but also when just deleting 200 files totaling around 75mb. A suggested solution to try gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-trash false (bug 1876641, mentioned to me in bug 1962357) did not resolve the issue. [Bug 1962357] Re: gnome-shell takes a lot of ram
Hi again, a quick update: the issue occurs for me when I try to delete several files at once. In this instance I deleted about 500 files totaling 700mb but in another instance I only deleted about 200 files totaling just 75mb. The attached screenshot shows the ram usage as soon as the system was responsive again (which took about 3-5 minutes). ** Attachment added: "Screenshot from 2022-02-28 16-57-00.jpg" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1962357/+attachment/5564193/+files/Screenshot%20from%202022-02-28%2016-57-00.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1962357 Title: gnome-shell takes a lot of ram To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1962357/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1962357] Re: gnome-shell takes a lot of ram
Hi, I've got a problem with extensive ram usage of the gnome-shell processes as well. It even causes my system to freeze up sometimes (when the ram is too low) and caused my system to crash a few times today already. I noticed it occurring in the last week or so. It might be related to Ubuntu version 20.04.4? On my system the ram is filled up by 10+ gnome-shell processes and they use a combined 11+Gb of 16Gb ram. On a similar system with ubuntu 20.04.3 this does not seem to occur. My system has 12 cores and 16gb ram. Disabling gnome-shell extensions did not resolve the ram usage. The issue sometimes occurs on startup and sometimes not. A restart via "alt+f2" "r" cleared the ram for me in one instance when I noticed the ram shortage but it did not prevent the issue from re-occurring.
