Well I don't have much more to say as your solution works very fine. The only thing I want to add is that there still might be some applications, such as ibus on my Karmic 9.10, that refuse work with gtk2-engines-qtcurve or gtk-qt-engine. In this case you can try "cp .gtkrc-2.0-kde4 .gtkrc-2.0" in your home directory as well as in /root/.
