[Bug 1066464] Re: Please patch xserver-xorg-video-sis for Saucy and Raring (was: SiS driver crashes Xserver with EXA acceleration)

2013-12-03 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
Like others I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-sis to make things work in
Saucy. This is a computer for a non well versed Linux user and I am sure
I will see the coputer back when some upgrade is done. Please fix. This
has to be hurting the Ubuntu and open source reputation.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-
video-sis (Ubuntu Linaro Evaluation Build)

I would recommend this bug be closed. Recent revisions must have solved
the problem because I no longer have the problem. I am using up to date
version of ubuntu 8.04.

Re: [Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-07-02 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
When I click on the menu for synaptic an icon (starting administrative
application) shows on the panel with the other open programs as if it is
attempting to run then the icon disappears and nothing more happens
(satellite modem connection see below). I can normally repeat this
several times. I never have gotten "starting without administrative
privileges". Yes this is very strange.

Ready for "Outer Limits", it gets stranger. My hunches led me to some
more bizarre checks after I noticed when connected to the Toshiba ISDN
router (64k) everything worked properly. Later after reconfirming that
there were problems when attached to the WildBlue satellite modem (They
claim broadband and it is if you need to download an .iso but pings are
1300ms, 1.5m) I completely disconnected the network cord and both
programs loaded and would ask for the password just as they did on the
ISDN connection. The ISDN router is set up for a workgroup called "bob"
but no other computers are connected to the router.

More: When I simply attached the cord to ISDN router, or satellite modem
or disconnected entirely, I found that I could repeat the good and bad
behavior as long as I didn't actually type in the password in both
programs and instead clicked "Cancel". Naturally, once I had typed in
the password both programs would work without even displaying the
password cue.

Summary:
ISDN router = both programs work
Not connected = both programs work
Satellite modem = synaptic doesn't work but upgrade-manager works about
50% of time (See "Additional strangeness" below).

I prefer to use the satellite connection for upgrades and installs
because it is much faster which probably led me to filing the original
bug report.

Additional strangeness: Synaptic almost never works when connected to
the satellite modem. I say never because I almost think on one of the 20
or so attempts it did. Right now update-manager loads 100% of time and
about 50% of the time it asks for a password when I press "Check". After
I press "Cancel" I can repeat the press "Check". If it doesn't do the
check properly the program hangs, I get the spinning ball, and then I am
forced to issue a "killall update-manager" to stop the program.

Now that I think about it this may have something to do with the way the
program is polling the ISP considering those long ping times. There
might be a timeout function that needs tweaking.

BTW this computer almost never crashes and as far as I can tell has no
stability problems. Firefox works reasonably well considering the long
ping times and large files download well.

I should have warned you from the beginning that strangeness is the norm
for me.

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

[Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-07-01 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
After setting my first line in /etc/hosts to "127.0.0.1 localhost
ubuntu804.bob" I rebooted. I rebooted because I noticed that sometimes
everything works even when the hosts file is changed but not after
reboot. After reboot the hosts file was as above. Synaptic would not run
from the menu in System/Administration. However, update-manager did run
from the menu, accepted a login when pressed "Check" and ran the check.
Afterwards, Synaptic then ran from the menu. Did this twice, same thing:

Reboot
Synaptic wouldn't run
update-manage did run
Synaptic now runs

That sounds like a bug to me.

[Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-06-29 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
Good news: when I add ubuntu804 to my hosts line 127.0.0.1 synaptic does
work.

Bad news: When GUI network tool network-admin is used to add the domain
bob the first line of the hosts file is changed to "127.0.0.1 localhost
ubuntu804.bob" and synaptic no longer works. The settings probably were
changed somewhere along the way because I change networks several times
a day and sometimes by simply opening, browsing and closing the network
tool Ubuntu connects.

I have an ISDN and a satellite connection. Neither is anything to brag
about but one works best for some things and vice versa. ISDN is setup
around the local bob workgroup. Also if I put in ubuntu804 twice both
are changed to ubuntu804.bob.

I am fairly new to this bug reporting process. Should I simply alter the
original description/tags or should I be adding a comment as I am doing
here.

Thanks,
Ken

2008-06-26 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
Apparently, I was in error with my last comment that by adding myself to
the root group synaptic started to work. Something else I did must have
started it working but I really don't know what. It appears that once it
starts working then it continues to work until I reboot.

2008-06-25 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
Sorry for taking so long to get this. In the mean time I set myself as a
user for root and synaptic and update-manager now work. Is this
inappropriate or dangerous? The gnuenterprise line was put in recently
for some troubleshooting. My /etc/hosts file has:

127.0.0.1 localhost
#70.158.36.94 www.gnuenterprise.org
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

[Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-06-16 Thread Kenneth Reiszner
I get this when sudo synaptic and gksu which is the command I get from
System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager:
ubuntu804:/$ sudo synaptic
sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu804
[sudo] password for ken:
ubuntu804:/$ gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic
sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu804

However, synaptic brings up the normal window in both cases. Also the
update manager presents the proper window but once I tell it to "Install
Updates" it hangs and can only be stopped with the "End Process" in the
System Processes/Processes window (probably killall, etc. also).
