[Bug 810093] Re: The new (2.6.39+) samsung_laptop kernel module causes serious backlight flickering - makes the desktop unusable

2011-10-23 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
I'm sorry, just realized my foul up. I had forgotten to update Grub after
reverting the changes in abovementioned Voria forums. So, now I can adjust the
backlight, but it does not automatically change when (un)plugging power chord.
Sorry to distract anyone.

[Bug 810093] Re: The new (2.6.39+) samsung_laptop kernel module causes serious backlight flickering - makes the desktop unusable

2011-10-23 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Using a Samsung x125.
I first followed the instructions here:
http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=821&hilit=brightness+flicker
Then I instead used the Voria PPA. The flickering does not happen, but I'm
unable to adjust the backlight with the Fn + arrow keys. Is this expected
behaviour, a bug or did I screw up anything? If I screwed something up, please
let me know.

[Bug 874361] Re: Oneiric introduces severe flickering when adjusting brightness

2011-10-16 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
This appears to have gotten rid of the flickering, but the side effect
is that I'm now unable to adjust brightness at all.
http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=821&hilit=brightness+flicker

In short:

1. edit the "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf":
at the end add this line: blacklist samsung_laptop

2. edit "/etc/default/grub/" (if you are using grub 2):
search the line with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=. add the following to the
string: acpi_backlight=vendor

3. execute update-grub

4. reboot your os

[Bug 874361] [NEW] Oneiric introduces severe flickering when adjusting brightness

2011-10-14 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

A Samsung X125 subnotebook. Upgraded from Natty last night. First noticed this
when pulling the AC power, brightness is reduced, as usual, but the brightness
setting slides up and down like crazy.
After a while I also see this when adjusting brightness with the Fn + arrow
keys.
My "solution" has been to force it all the way down or up, depending on my
needs, by using the Fn + arrow keys. There is no specific amount of keypresses
that finally makes the flickering stop and brightness to settle on either max
or min brightness.
Have never experienced this bug before, so I'm assuming this is a regression.

[Bug 351035] Re: Recovery of documents opens 2 versions: last save and a restore

2011-08-13 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
I'm sorry, but is there any chance that the above command will do anything with
this bug? I mean, the bug report is 2,5 years old, I'm several versions of
Ubuntu away, on a newer computer, and of course I'm now using LibreOffice.
A little late to the party this response, isn't it?

I love Ubuntu and open source software, but after 7-8 years of reporting
bugs, I'm almost put entirely off. This is one of many examples of bugs
being pushed around to confirmed (if even that), then nothing happens at
all. Not trying to start up a debate about this on Launchpad (because I
know it's not a forum), but I just think it reflects poorly on Ubuntu.

More in relation to this specific bug, I'm not going to vaste any time
issuing any commands (whether they work or not) for a trivial bug that
will not move any more the next 2,5 years.

I guess this can be changed to status
"oldasdirtandnobodybotherswithitanymore", which seems to be a missing
option. (At least that would be tongue-in-cheek.)

Sorry about the rant.

[Bug 685634] Re: Notifiaction apps remain in Unity launcher when they shouldn't

2010-12-11 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
** Description changed:

- With the latest version from PPA, Synapse is always in Unity's launcher.
- It shouldn't be. I can also note that launching it from the launcher
- doesn't focus it, so it doesn't respond to keypress, so I need to click
- it to do anything.
+ Description of bug:
+ With the latest version from PPA, Synapse is always in Unity's launcher. It
shouldn't be.
+ This also applies to Gwibber as far as I can tell: I have Gwibber-services
running on logon. Gwibber does not however show up in launcher until I start
it, either from menu or from the notification area. Having it in launcher makes
sense when a Gwibber window is active, but after I X it away, it still remains
in the launcher.
+ It has also been said that bzr-gtk suffers from this.
+
+ -
+
+ Solution shamelessly copied from comment #13:
+ The solution is to ensure that programs are properly marking the
AppIndicatorCategory for their indicators. BAMF will only expose indicators
which are of type APP_INDICATOR_CATEGORY_APPLICATION_STATUS. This is what
should be used for applications such as Rhythbox, Banshee, Tomboy (basically
anything that may throw up a sustained window or "minimize" to its indicator).
Projects like Synapse should use APP_INDICATOR_CATEGORY_OTHER
+
+ In Synapse this has been fixed in this revision:
+ project/trunk/revision/269
+
+ -
+
+ Original description:

shouldn't be. I can also note that launching it from the launcher doesn't focus
it, so it doesn't respond to keypress, so I need to click it to do anything.

  -
  For Unity:
The problem is that Unity doesn't respect the Gtk.Window.skip_taskbar_hint
(TRUE).
I need a way to tell Unity to not show my application under the task list.
But I also think that this needs to be fixed in the Unity dock.

2010-12-06 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
@Alberto: It shouldn't be in the launcher for the same reason that no
other background tasks should stay there. Maybe some people would like
to keep it as a launcher, but I really don't see the need for that. (The
normal use case would be to run it on logon.) I guess bringing it up via
keyboard shortcut could have it in the launcher as a running task, but
it shouldn't be there when it's running in the background.

[Bug 636328] [NEW] Arista causes CPU heat to spike, actually causing computer to shutdown

2010-09-12 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: arista

I tried using Arista to transcode an avi-file to the n900 preset.
The computer is a laptop with a core2duo CPU, usually at 50 degrees C, normal
spiking at 70-80 on intensive tasks.
Transcoding this one single file with Arista gives a CPU temperature up to 95
degrees, actually causing the computer to suddenly shut down long before
actually completing the task. There must be some way to have Arista be less
aggressive.

[Bug 593003] Re: wishlist: Indicator-applet needs active chatrooms under "Chat"

2010-06-13 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
I'm aware of that. What's your point?

Expanding, how about someting along these lines?
- If all chats are in one tabbed window, X-ing them sends them to messaging
window with the entry "Tabbed Chats".
- If the umber of separate chat windows are equal to or less than, say 5, then
have them as separate entries in the messaging menu. If there are more than
that number, give a warning that X-ing them away will disconnect the
conversations.

Hopefully you understand my main point, even though the minor details
would need some adjusting.

running

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2010-05-20 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
This problem is still very annoying to me on Lucid. Unplugging the power throws
a window that tells me: "Laptop battery critcally low - Computer will suspend
very soon unless it is plugged in". Clicking OK or Cancel results in nothing
except the window closing.
However, I tried out battery-status: https://launchpad.net/battery-status If I
use that, my computer will suspend itself every time I unplug the power.
This bug has now lasted across several versions of Ubuntu with a high
importance. Is there anything I can do to get this from "Incomplete" to
something else?

[Bug 552227] Re: gwibber-accounts crashed with KeyError in get_account_data()

2010-04-17 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
@Toupeiro: The question was not out of line, I agree. Thinking that
comment #26 is a fix-all for all users was wrong. Postulating that all
users after comment #26 can't follow instructions was out of line, in my
opinion. Especially when several users have said that the steps didn't
work *for them*.

Anyway, I tried investigating the steps in #26. I thought this might be due to
the fact that Gwibber was already authorized on my Facebook profile. So, I
removed Gwibber in Facebook application settings. I then was able to go through
all the steps, and Gwibber has all boxes checked on Facebook. (Which it also
used to have, because I first used Gwibber months and months ago.)
I still have no success, and the same crash.
So, proving that I can actually use scrollbars, can we accept that this is a
software bug, not some users' inability to use a basic web UI?

Gwibber on my computer still does *nothing*, neither showing Twitter/
Identi.ca, nor posting to them. I'm not sure if these are all symptoms of the
same problem.
I'm assuming that this bug is related to CouchDB, so maybe this bug should be
marked accordingly?

packages in official Ubuntu repo, as well as Gwibber-daily ppa.
Lucid 32 bit, fresh install, brand new Gwibber settings.
(Gwibber also does not add Facebook account, does not post to neither Twitter
nor Identi.ca, so it does **nothing at all**)

[Bug 486777] [NEW] There are 3 different context menu entries for unmounting a USB disk

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I right click a USB disk on my desktop, I get 3 differet entries for
unmounting it. "Unmount", "Eject" and "Safely remove drive".

on alpha6 and Gwibber was fine then. Now, I don't get anything but white
colouring in the main window. All notifications still show up in notify-

[Bug 436444] Re: Firefox needs clicked twice to come to front over Synaptic

2009-09-25 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gnome-do
+ Not related to Gnome Do as I originally thought. Might be due to how Gnome
handles windows, or maybe Synaptic.
+ Advice is needed to assign this bug to the right package.

- What I did: Have Synaptic and Firefox open. Gnome Do is running in docky
mode. Have Synaptic covering the screen.
- When I try to bring Firefox to front its icon needs to be clicked twice in
order to have it appear.
+ I'm using Compiz from the Ubuntu repos if that should matter.

- I tried with the window list applet, and there it does not require more
- than one click.
-
- This is on Karmic with all updates installed. Gnome-do is from ubuntu
- repos.
-
- Note: I'm having problems getting Compiz to run as of the latest updates.
I'll try with the window list applet once I'm able to get Compiz to run to
ensure that it's not a Compiz bug.
- I'll also check methodically to see if this also relates to other
applications once Compiz is again running.
+ This is the short description of the the steps to reproduce:
+ Open Firefox, open Synaptic, click Firefox to have it be brought to front.
Only this first toggle is buggy, following toggles between the two seems to
work fine.

[Bug 436444] Re: Firefox needs clicked twice to come to front over Synaptic

2009-09-25 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Alright, I think I narrowed this down now, and made a screencast of the
bug.

Step by step in the screencast:
> First I open Firefox
> Then I open Synaptic
-- They are now visible in the window list applet. Since ynaptic was opened
last, it is visible on the screen.

> I click Firefox once. The window list button is slightly different coloured.
> Synaptic is still in front

Definitely not a big bug, but makes the overall shinyness of the desktop
a little less good.

Compiz is back on, and it seems this isn't as easy as I thought. When
using Gnome Do to toggle, I have seen this 1 out of maybe 8 times, and
I'm not sure if the same is true for the window list applet. I'll look
into this some more, hopefully trying to nail down if this is also true
with the gnome panel window list applet.

[Bug 376227] Re: sshfs mounts remote folder to mountpoint AND as a drive on the desktop

2009-09-22 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Isn't this the expected behaviour?

If I understand this correctly mounted drives are shown on desktop, regardless
of where the actual mountpoint resides. If you try mounting it under
/media/somedrive it'll still show up on the desktop. This is much the same way
that USB-keys will show an icon on your desktop even though it most likely
automounts under /media/disk or something similar.
You can think of the mount icon that pops up on your desktop as a link. The
directory you created on your desktop is still a directory if you don't have
anything mounted to it.

If you don't want mounted devices shown on desktop, you can change that
in gconf-editor: apps > nautilus > desktop: uncheck "volumes_visible"

I would never have thought to mount drives under /home/[user]/Desktop
myself, because it seems much cleaner when all mounted drives (except
root) are mounted under /media/[somedrive]

[Bug 434680] [NEW] Mounting SSH succeeds but still gives error

2009-09-22 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sshfs

Karmic alpha6, all updates.

Not quite sure if this is the correct package to assign this to.

I ssh into my server, and mount it now through Places > ssh-backup
When I click the item ssh-backup is mounted and I see it on my desktop, and I
can access it fine. However, I *always* get an error dialog:

2009-09-21 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Clean install of Karmic alpha 6.
My battery has on the last versions of Ubuntu lasted for around 2 hours.
Right now, the power manager reads: 15 minutes remaining (35,0%) which means
either
1) Karmic drains battery
2) Gnome-power-manager has a serious bug in how it reports remaining power.

Let me know what info you need, and I'll give it.

I've also noticed that on startup with the power cable plugged in, I'm

[Bug 433196] [NEW] Karmic: Cgmail does not notify again on click

2009-09-19 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cgmail

A clean, fresh install of Karmic. Cgmail does work, and shows number of
new emails. Previously it repeated the last notification on click, now
it does not. I'd like to have the old behaviour back

Getting weirder, I can in fact enable wobbly windows, but the animation

I've tried with ccsm, simple-ccsm, and the preferences > appearance
  option

[Bug 419763] [NEW] "Sure you want to quit" does not respond like it should to "no"

2009-08-27 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: easytag

The default setup og easytag includes a "sure you really want to quit" dialog
whenever you do ctrl-Q, click the X, or close from the menu.
For once I decided I didn't want to close, so I clicked "no". I then received a
repeat of the dialog, clicked "no" again, and easytag quits anyway.

I'm not sure if this goes for both easytag and easytag-aac, as I have
not been able to test that.

Solution: At least have the behaviour fixed so it at all makes sense.
Although, the dialog is annoying on its own, and the default option should be
to have it turned off.

[Bug 402997] [NEW] usb-creator browses /root, should rather use ~

2009-07-22 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

See screenshot for the sidebar of the file browser.

I've seen this in a couple of other apps that starts with sudo privs as
well, but haven't gotten around to file bugs for them earlier.

It is rather annoying to have usb-creator browse /root in stead of my /home.
I'm likely to have the disk images in home.
I would also guess that /root/Desktop is not used by any users (except those
who use a separate admin account)

[Bug 402987] [NEW] usb-creator does not work with android disk image

2009-07-22 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

When trying to make a bootable USB of Android v 0.2 (downloaded the torrent
here http://code.google.com/p/live-android/downloads/list ) I'm told that:
"This is not a desktop install CD and thus cannot be used by this application."
Unetbootin makes a bootable USB of the same OS fine without any errors.

[Bug 364511] Re: Running Futuremark Peacekeeper browser test with Epiphany gives system freeze

2009-04-21 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
If you read my description, you'd see that I said it works fine on
Firefox, Shiretoko (Firefox 3.5 beta) and Chromium alpha. FWIW, Opera
does not freeze the system, but does not complete the test.

I'm using the gecko engine for Epiphany.

[Bug 364511] [NEW] Running Futuremark Peacekeeper browser test with Epiphany gives system freeze

2009-04-21 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

This is on Jaunty RC, fully updated as of Apr 21. at 11:00 local time.

Running the browser test here: http://service.futuremark.com/peacekeeper

Works fine on Firefox, Shiretoko and Chromium alpha
Epiphany runs it to ~half way, but on the Futuremark 3d logo, the whole system
freezes, requiring a restart. Tried twice, both times with the same results

[Bug 362261] [NEW] Option to print the name of the application that send the notification

2009-04-16 Thread Ketil Wendelbo Aanensen
Public bug reported:

This is clearly wishlist material.

I'd like a small option to have the notifications include the name of the app
where the notification comes from.
It could be like this:

-
Gwibber notifies:

Someperson says:
bla, bla, bla, bla
--

The reason for this is that many apps have similar functionality, e.g.
microblog updates.
Currently I use Gwibber and Gnome Do, and they both show status updates.
Obviously I don't need the same notifcations from the same app, so I'd like to
see which apps are notifying me, so I can turn off the ones I don't need.
(An option to ignore notifications from certain apps would also be nice, but
that's another issue.)

The indicator-applet could have a small set of preferences from the
right click menu.
