[Bug 303011] Re: [i945] 2.5.1 driver poor performance

2009-04-03 Thread Kevin Lange
It seems I've let this report run wild: The issue in this bug is EXA
being damn slow on some Intel graphics chipsets. While the issue has
yet to be fixed, the things being discussed here have nothing to do with
it.

I'm removing myself from the mailing list for the report because it no
longer affects me: I've been using UXA for months with great results.

[Bug 314390] Re: Cursor jumps from time to time

2009-03-07 Thread Kevin Lange
Got some questions, because I'm having the same symptoms, but I don't believe
it has anything to do with evdev:
- Is the cursor jumping or the actual mouse location? For me, the
hardware-rendered cursor jumps, but input goes where it's supposed to (where
the mouse should have been).
- Does this happen with any mouse you use? It can't possibly be a touchpad
issue - I get it with my USB mice as well as my touchpad.
This problem always seems to crop up after updates to the -intel driver, not
-evdev or any other input driver (and it always seems to go away after another
set updates to -intel, and then it comes back...)

[Bug 314390] Re: Cursor jumps from time to time

2009-03-07 Thread Kevin Lange
While the cursor is jumping, I too get lots of log output. Seems the
issue is with the Intel driver randomly redetecting modelines - with
bursts of fifty some redetections every so often. While that happens,
the cursor display location jumps just because of how the driver works,
and everything gets really slow. So, the root problem here is Intel
driver randomly runs display mode redetections, hundreds at a time.

[Bug 314390] Re: Cursor jumps from time to time

2009-03-07 Thread Kevin Lange
My questions were directed at the OP.

I was referring to my X log: /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which shows the same
basic lines as the OP posted, only more (because my card has a lot more
modes to scan, presumably). If I keep a log reader open on it, the
output is quite noticeable as the scroll bar shows a massive gap after
just one set of jumps.

[Bug 334446] Re: Remove gnome-pilot from Ubuntu

2009-02-25 Thread Kevin Lange
No one really cares if you /do/ own one. The majority of users don't,
and gnome-pilot should not be part of a default installation.

If you do have one, good for you, if this goes through, you can
reinstall it.

This is a matter of very few people use this, it's not part of the standard
release of Gnome, and the device it targets isn't even supported anymore: it
shouldn't come by default.

I'll go further and say it never should have.

2008-12-17 Thread Kevin Lange
No, because I run Compiz from Git, and therefore can't file bug reports
on it. I simply used it as an example of poor performance.

** Summary changed:

- [i945] 2.5.1 driver framerate below 10fps running the cube view in compiz

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

+ The new 2.5.1 release of the Intel driver gives horrible performance.

Screenshot with fps marker, under compiz: http://oasis-
  games.com/~klange/wtf_intel251.png

As seen in the screenshot, the standard cube view in Compiz runs at a
headache-inducing 2 frames per second. With 2.4, the framerate was
  easily ten times faster.

Jaunty, newest updates as of 11/27/2008, 10:00 EST.
  Package version: 2.5.1-1ubuntu1
What I expected to happen: A frame rate of at least 10fps.
- What happened instead: Slowness. Lots and lots of slowness.
+ What happened instead: Poor framerates in Compiz, glxgears, and my own OpenGL
applications.

[Bug 256618] [NEW] New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)

desktop space to update as they animate, squishing full screen windows
as the panel appears. DO NOT WANT. This is annoying, undesired, and
impossible to turn off without recompiling. The behavior was added to
fix a bug that doesn't exist such that it does not present itself in
the top 90% of usage scenarios and is a tough luck deal for those who
may actually see it (has to do with setting auto-hide size 1/2 the
panel size, which clearly defeats the purpose of the auto-hide).

The request here is to either ignore this change from upstream and add
in the two-line exception for auto-hide panels, or to add an option
available through gconf to disable/enable this change.

gnome-panel: 2.23.6
Ubuntu Intrepid

Steps to reproduce:
- Set a panel to auto-hide
- Full screen a window
- Show the panel
Expected results:
- Nothing happens to the full screen window, as it's been for the past 8+ years.
Actual results:
- My entire machine slows down as Firefox is forced to re-render all of its
contents thirty different times as the panel resizes it during its animation
phase. Compiz also makes it jump in strange ways (and we're not going to fix
it).

So, in conclusion, DO NOT WANT, please, Ubuntu packagers, ignore this horrible
commit from upstream!

[Bug 256142] Re: Flickering with version 2.4.0

2008-08-10 Thread Kevin Lange
While this does seem to often be happening when starting a new
application window, I've seen it happen at random while just using
Firefox.

[Bug 256618] Re: New Strut Behavior on Auto-Hide Panels (upstream) is Undesirable for Users (and annoying)

2008-08-10 Thread Kevin Lange
In response to Dylan McCall, should the animation behavior be changed,
there is a slim (but possible) chance that I would accept this. Probably
not, but it's a start.

It seems like the following should be done:
1. Add an option to gconf, bool, 'update_autohide_strut', default = disabled
(because users don't like change forced upon them as default values, this is a
known fact of creating a new release)
2. Change current behavior to update after animation cycle. (which would
improve performance when the option is enabled)
3. Add in original exception when gconf option is disabled. (because that's the
entire point of this bug report)
4. ...?
5. Profit.

On another note, the last bit of my original report is a simple joke,
and no hard feelings are meant towards Vincent Untz for what he did,
even if I am a bit ticked off about it. It's not like this is a closed-
source app I'm forced to use - I can go and 'fix' it for myself, just as
I did.

I also have a forum topic running for any less-pertinent discussion of
the bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885625
