[Bug 1872230] Re: The left Ctrl key does not work when using pointer location

2020-12-10 Thread Thomas Kirby
This is a problem regardless whether Pointer location is on or off.
The only difference is that when pointer location is on, you can't see the
LEFT-CTRL key light up it corresponding element on the keyboard map,
i.e. Language & Region > Input Sources and then click on the eyeball button
for the keyboard in use.

The LEFT-CTRL key is effectively dead.

How do we revitalise it since we need it for convenient command
shortcuts.

[Bug 590686] Re: Affect: toolbar label should be renamed/removed

2013-05-25 Thread Kirby Schroeder
It is now four years later. I recently discovered Inkscape, and have
begun using it to edit SVG images. And this afternoon I was finally so
annoyed by the Affect label that I reported it as a bug in need of
fixing. I was soon notified that I was reporting a duplicate of this
error, Bug #590686. And here I now am, reading over the text of the
above messages.

The messages suggest that the error has been fixed. Well, boys and
girls, it is still here. Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939. I am using Windows 7
on a 64 bit system. I am a native English speaker. I am a grammar
nazi. And I am incredulous that this problem is apparently still being
reproduced. WTF???

Hey, though: it's not like Adobe Illustrator CS6 isn't replete with its
own stockpile of linguistic mishaps. Looks to me like nobody thinks
it's important to have their software vetted by someone with a degree in
English anymore before distributing it to the public. Adobe has been
around long enough to know better. Christ, how can programmers still be
making these kinds of mistakes? Doesn't anyone check their work? Did
they all get a C in English??

(Can you hear me laughing? I am laughing here... Sort of.)

Having the same problems with Garmin-ant-downloader. Running Ubuntu
13.04. Tried everything suggested but no luck. Still getting error:

Also would be nicer to have the Garmin-ant-downloader modified as an app
opened from Applications Menu.

when I remove the plymouth entries entirely from /etc/init (not neat,
I know) I get the same blank screen and lock but without the plymouth

I can confirm this too, also disabling DRI in xorg.conf doesn't work
either.

[Bug 1034162] [NEW] libreoffice writer freezes ubuntu

2012-08-07 Thread Stuart Kirby
Public bug reported:

I have been having this problem very often since the update to UBUNTU
12.04 - (six months ago?). Several times per day when using libreoffice
'writer' 3.5.4.2 build ID: 350m1 (Build:2). I have been running the
software updater most days in the hope that it will be fixed.

The programme freezes up together with UBUNTU itself and the only way to
solve the problem is to shutdown and restart.

It can be provoked by doing the following actions:

Open LibreOffice with a blank new document
press and hold down the 'z' key
After 10 or 20 lines of z's, everything freezes
Clearly, it should not freeze but just keep on going.

If you get to say 50 lines with no freeze then stop and press the delete
button (hold down) either deleting from the end or from the beginning
and it will often freeze

Can also be be frozen by opening a new document and using the vertical
slider on the right hand side. Pull it up and down until UBUNTU
freezes.

These methods do not work 100% of the time but I can usually provoke a
freeze within a few minutes.

Regards

Stuart Kirby

P.S. I have no idea what FindRightPackage is on about! Sorry. I hope
that I have provided what you need.

[Bug 905022] [NEW] No sounds from headphones on ThinkPad T420

2011-12-15 Thread Chris Kirby
Public bug reported:

Long time reader, first time poster :-)

I cannot get sound from the analog headphone/microphone port on my
Lenovo ThinkPad T420. Based on Google searches I have fiddled with the
snd-hda-intel options in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as follows:

- Set model=thinkpad resulting in no sound through the headphone jack
and the loss of the headphone playback connector in alsamixer.
Unsurprisingly this results in no option to set or configure the analog
headphone connector in the sound settings applet and/or pavucontrol.

- Set model=generic with the same results as above.

- Set model=auto which resulted in the appearance of the headphone
connector (progress!) but I still get no sound from the headphones when
I select the connector and/or mute the speakers through alsamixer.

I also tried re-configuring the alsa-driver package to include verbose
debugging support but ran into a whole lot of hassles (some of the
source references smp_lock.h which is no more in kernel 3+, macro
conflicts with system includes, etc.) when I tried to build it with
module-assistant. I also tried to build it from the latest tarball from
the alsa project with mixed results and ultimately no joy.

Most problems of this kind I've seen tend to fall into 3 categories: (i)
fixed by changing snd-hda-intel options, (ii) fixed through some
sequence of random updates, (iii) sitting in silence. I'm hoping to be a
bit more proactive.

The output of alsa-info.sh is attached.

I agree. It always seems to fail when the hand looks promising. Also,
I have been playing without enable solver and it has not failed.

[Bug 835073] Re: kpatience gypsy closes randomly and unexpectedly

2011-11-04 Thread Stuart Kirby
I have experienced this problem many times since downloading UBUNTU
11.10.

It seems to be associated with the solver in that I am taking no
actions and suddenly it crashes. I would say that it only crashes when
the game looks easy to solve! One repeatable example is as follows:

Choose new numbered deal, Gypsy, number: 102194206
Move 7 of spades to 8 of hearts, 8 of hearts to 9 of clubs, 5C to 6D, 6D to 7C
- boom!
Also: 7S to 8H, 8H to 9C, 5C to 6D, 6D to 7S, 2S to space, 6Hh to 7C
...boom!

I have notice different Gypsy games where it fails shortly after the
deal before any card has been moved.

[Bug 426330] Re: Installer hangs during install on Intel Q9550 Quad Core processor

2009-09-14 Thread Simon Kirby
I've got this server working now - not sure if the problem is an Intel
one or a Ubuntu one. The above behaviour occurs using the latest Bios
version for this board (DG35EC), which is version 0117 dated 7/31/2009.

Installation works perfectly if the Bios is downgraded to 0116, dated
6/25/2009.

[Bug 426330] [NEW] Installer hangs during install on Intel Q9550 Quad Core processor

2009-09-08 Thread Simon Kirby
Public bug reported:

We're seeing an issue installing 8.04 64 Bit onto a machine with an
Intel DG35EC motherboard and a Q9550 Quad Core processor.

The installer starts up incredibly slowly, and then hangs. With the
quiet option removed you can see some of the commands taking several
seconds when they usually fly by. For example there is a 10 second delay
at Early unpacking initramfs and another 15-20 second delay at
Checking if image is initramfs.

The last two messages shown are:

EDD information not available
freeing unused Kernel memory: 320K freed.

The install then hangs and when left long enough the screen eventually
goes blank.

I can get the installation passed this point using the kernel options
noapic nolapic nosmp but the installer is still incredibly slow,
taking several minutes to get to network card detection, and a few more
minutes before it will try a DHCP lookup (when the installation is
running over PXE). At this point the DHCP lookup fails, but there aren't
any entries in the DHCP server logs to suggest a lookup was actually
performed.

I've seen a similar issue with DHCP before which was driver related, but
both 32 and 64 bit versions work with this network card (the on board
one) when a different processor is used and the above kernel options are
not used.

I have tried different combinations of Bios settings (speedstep, VT,
SATA modes etc) but none make a difference. The Bios is the latest
version available from Intel.

This error occurs on both the 8.04.3 cd installer, and the 8.04.3 PXE
image. The 32 bit version of 8.04 installs correctly on this hardware,
and the 64 bit version installs on exactly the same setup when using a
dual core processor (E6850). We have tested several machines with the
same setup to rule out faulty CPU's, and on all of them 32 bit will
install whereas 64 bit will not.

The problem does not occur using 9.04, however these will be live
production servers and I need to use an LTS release.

[Bug 411898] [NEW] No option to keep conversations off the record

2009-08-11 Thread Tom Kirby
Public bug reported:

I think it's a serious problem with Empathy that there is no option to
prevent conversations being logged, as there is in Pidgin. It would be
good to have:

1) A general option to turn off logging altogether on the user's own computer
1a) An option to keep the current conversation from being recorded on the
user's own computer
2) A button to erase all conversation history stored on the user's own computer
3) A function (in the view previous conversations window) for deleting past
conversations with individual
contacts

It seems to me socially inappropriate to record all my conversations
with my friends, and this is particularly true of IM and phone
conversations, where people may not know that what they say is being
recorded. It would therefore be good to have the option of turning this
off.

Debateably, it might also be good to warn the user that the program is
logging their conversation, and that they can turn the feature off if
they so desire.

I'm using Empathy 2.26.1

[Bug 381884] Re: Appletouch touchpad driver produces jumpy two-fingered scrolling

[Bug 381884] Re: Appletouch touchpad driver produces jumpy two-fingered scrolling

2009-06-24 Thread Kirby
The jump happens during the context switch from one-finger pointing to
two-finger pointing. The reference point changes from the location of
the one finger to mid-way between the two fingers. The arrow should not
move when the second finger is added or removed. That's why it scrolls,
even though the user hasn't moved.

Just to be clear that it's not a problem of sensitivity. The input
reference point should be reset without moving the output point, when
entering and leaving two-finger mode.

The server is an Apple AirPort Extreme with usb hard drive (accessed over
ethernet, not wirelessly).
PCs and Macs can access.
I can mount it with smbmount.
With gvfs-mount I don't even get prompted for password.

These types of network devices have very little configuration on the
server side, and between this and Gnome Bug 529365 (still unconfirmed

Is there any more data I can provide. Logs? Wireshark capture?

[Bug 353826] [NEW] [Jaunty] Thumbnails in Nautilus have the wrong orientation

2009-04-02 Thread Tom Kirby
Public bug reported:

When I import photos from my Canon EOS 400D (I think this is a Digital
Rebel XTi in the US), the ones taken with a portrait orientation
appear rotated through 90 degrees.

The camera is of the type that automatically senses what orientation
you took the photos at - I think it then writes this in the EXIF data.
Nautilus used to deal with this correctly in Intrepid, but in Jaunty it
shows them un-rotated.

Did Nautilus previously display thumbnails by reading the whole image
and scaling it? And does it now do so by taking the existing embedded
thumbnail from the image file? This is the impression I get, because it
is now way quicker than it used to be at creating the thumbnails. My
suspicion is that the new thumbnail code doesn't honour the EXIF tag
that determines orientation.

I attach a screenshot: you can see that for the photo selected, gThumb
reports the value of the Auto rotate tag as being Rotate 270 degrees
CW; with a landscape photo, gThumb reports this value as None.

My Nautilus version is 2.26.0-0ubuntu4, and I'm using the pre-release of
Jaunty Jackalope.

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] Offline Mode feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-10-08 Thread Tom Kirby
I'm getting this problem in Intrepid with NM 0.7. This might be because
I have the following setup:

eth0: wired Ethernet, always connected
eth1: used for a wireless device that is currently unplugged

Will this be fixed before Intrepid comes out?

[Bug 205945] Re: [Hardy] Heavy I/O causes other processes to starve

2008-08-29 Thread Tom Kirby
Hi Leann,

Thank you for all your help with this issue. I'm sorry to say that I've
upgraded my hard-drive since I reported the bug, and I'm no longer
experiencing any problems with it. I'm now using the old hard-drive
mounted in an external enclosure, connected via USB, and this setup
doesn't show the same problem.

Regards,

Tom

2008-05-20 Thread Tom Kirby
Hi Leann,

I added the kernel-ppa.list file as you described, with the
appropriate entries in it, and then ran sudo apt-get update. I then
ran sudo apt-get upgrade -s, but the only thing it would offer to
upgrade was linux-libc-dev, not linux-image-2.6.25. I'm quite
willing to help with this if you can give me some pointers as to what to
do next.

[Bug 203494] Re: gnome-power-manager does not restore brightness after idle dim (2.22.0-0ubuntu1)

2008-03-25 Thread Kirby
My IBM T42 also dims when AC power is unplugged and then dims again when
AC power is restored. When it hits the minimum setting, plugging in then
brings brightness up one level. It's like it doesn't know the current
setting, because if I max the brightness before plugging in it goes to
the same, lower value as before (one up from zero).

[Bug 203494] Re: gnome-power-manager does not restore brightness after idle dim (2.22.0-0ubuntu1)

2008-03-25 Thread Kirby
Looking at this log which had more transitions. The problem is:

Start
currently set brightness 1.00
battery change by 0.00, brightness 1.00
Setting on-ac: 0
currently set brightness 1.00
battery change by -0.30, brightness 0.70
Setting on-ac: 1
currently set brightness 0.57
battery change by 0.30, brightness 0.87
Setting on-ac: 0
currently set brightness 0.85
battery change by -0.30, brightness 0.55
Setting on-ac: 1
currently set brightness 0.42
battery change by 0.30, brightness 0.72

It's adding and subtracting right, but it reads back an initial setting
of 0.57 at plug-in after having set 0.7 after unplugging. It loses
ground all the way to a brightness of 0. And if I increase brightness
using the Fn-HOME combination, it still thinks that brightness is 0 when
I plug in AC again. It looks like at least two problems.

[Bug 201044] Re: Suspend+Hibernate fails on Fujitsu-Seimens Amilo M1405

2008-03-24 Thread Tom Kirby
It turns out that my machine (which is an ASUS Pundit-R, by the way, not
a Fujitsu-Siemens) actually does hibernate in the end if left long
enough. It takes a lot longer than it used to (so isn't really any
quicker than shutting down and starting up anymore), and although it
does resume from hibernation, it takes ges to do it. If it would
help people for me to time how long it takes, I'd be happy to do that- I
think it takes at least 5 minutes (probably more) to hibernate, and
about 3-5 minutes to resume. Any help with this problem would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

[Bug 205945] [NEW] [Hardy] Heavy I/O causes other processes to starve

2008-03-24 Thread Tom Kirby
Public bug reported:

After a while of using Hardy, I've found that unlike Gutsy, heavy disk
usage by any one process (caused by things like launching Firefox or
Openoffice, or installing packages), causes other processes to be
starved of CPU time.

On a machine running Hardy, try:

cat /dev/urandom ~/test

whilst playing some music, or even just moving the mouse around. The
mouse starts to jitter a bit, and the music starts to get choppy. (I've
noticed that choppy music occurs more with Rhythmbox than when using
totem or just a gstreamer pipeline, but it still happens whatever you
use.)

This kind of starvation doesn't happen if you just increase CPU usage
generally, by running something like

cat /dev/urandom /dev/null

or just by moving windows around a lot.

This is definitely a regression on Gutsy for me. I'm finding that listening to
music is no longer pleasant if I'm trying to start programs or install packages
at the same time, for example.

Can anyone help?

[Bug 201044] Re: Suspend+Hibernate fails on Fujitsu-Seimens Amilo M1405

2008-03-15 Thread Tom Kirby
I'm having what looks like a pretty similar problem. When I select
hibernate, the screen goes black and then prints some text that looks
rather like this:

[ 847.068788] drm_sysfs_suspend
[ 858.779243] i8042 kbd 00:09:activation failed

If I press ctrl+alt+f1, I get a text-based login console, but can't do
anything with it. If I press ctrl+alt+f7, the screen goes blank and I
can't do anything - even pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing.

The only way to rescue the computer from this is to do a hard reset.
I'm attaching diagnostic information as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI

Thanks to all the Ubuntu devs who have worked so hard to make Hardy such a good
release - apart from this problem, I'm seeing lots of things that I like very
much!

[Bug 174751] Re: hexbin not converting some hqx files properly

2008-03-07 Thread Kirby
hexbin failed to extract an xls file encoded with binhex 4.0. I tried
installing a newer macutils via alien (macutils-2.0b3-32 instead of
macutils-2.0b3-15), but that also failed.

uudeview worked perfectly on the same file.

[Bug 186345] Re: histogram disappears in gimp's curves tool

2008-02-04 Thread Tom Kirby
Looks like I've found out what's going on.

Basically, the colour of the graph and its background are linked to
colours in the current theme. Looking at the Colours tab in the
Customize Theme box from the Appearance preferences, it seems that the
graph itself is set to the Windows colour, whilst the background is
set to the Input Boxes colour.

To make the graph visible, all you need to do is go to
System-Preferences-Appearance-Themes-Customize-Colours, and set the
Windows theme and Input Boxes theme to different settings, e.g.
#CC and #FF respectively.

I'm not sure the curves tool should use colours from the theme, in case
these two colours get set to be identical, thus making the graph
disappear.

Any ideas? Shall I pass this on upstream to the Gimp devs?

Tom

[Bug 186345] [NEW] histogram disappears in gimp's curves tool

2008-01-27 Thread Tom Kirby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Hi,

I'm using Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10) and Gimp 2.4.2-0ubuntu0.7.10.1.

When I bring up the curves tool, the histogram appears briefly, and
immediately disappears. This happens every time. I think it might only
have started happening when the package manager updated gimp from the
release candidate version that came with Gutsy to the full 2.4.2
release.

It's a really annoying bug, because it prevents me from adjusting the
curves on an image properly, so help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom Kirby

[Bug 109579] Re: thumbnail problems with relative soft-links

2007-05-07 Thread Tom Kirby
I can't get thumbnails in symlinked directories either.

/home/tom/Desktop/2007-05/ is a symlink pointing to
/home/tom/pictures/photos_archive/2007-05/.

If I open ~/Desktop/2007-05/ in Nautilus, and then double-click one of
the photos to open it with gthumb, then go to the browser view, no
thumbnails appear.

If, on the other hand, I go to
/home/tom/pictures/photos_archive/2007-05/ in gthumb, all the
thumbnails show up.

I don't know whether this is a problem with gthumb or gnomevfs, as it
could be to do with an error in detecting whether or not the directory
in question is a network share.

I have attached the output I get from gthumb when using
~/Desktop/2007-05/. I get no output at all when I use
~/pictures/photos_archive/2007-05/.

Changing the thumbnail setting in Nautilus to allow viewing thumbnails
on network shares does not solve the problem.

I did not get this problem in Edgy.

[Bug 109579] Re: thumbnail problems with relative soft-links

Sorry if I didn't make this clear: all of the directories concerned are
on the same filesystem, which is a local filesystem mounted on /home.

[Bug 46217] Re: totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin gives an error in a page

2006-12-17 Thread Tom Kirby
I'm no longer getting the same specific problem on the same specific
page. This could be due to the fact that I'm now on Edgy, or that the
page has changed, or I might have installed some different
firefox/gstreamer plugin since the problem first occurred. Will try to
report back with more info later.

[Bug 46217] Re: totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin gives an error in a page

2006-08-23 Thread Tom Kirby
I am experiencing rather irritating problems visiting
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/uk/

I don't just get one error message, but hundreds. They just keep coming,
which is a far worse bug than a missing codec, as it means I have to
quit Firefox to stop the messages clogging up my system. In fact, I'd go
as far as to say that there's the slightest chance this could constitute
a potential security hole in Firefox/Totem on systems that have the
Firefox Totem plugin but not the WMV9 Totem plugin.

In other words, this could be serious.

The error looks something like: Totem could not play
'mms://.../wm.rootmedia/84/84325_300.asf...

Video codec 'MS WMV 9 (win32)' is not handled...
