Having problems with no choice of video resolution in open source
drivers. Needed open source to run DraftSight.

Then had problems with being able to run Abiword, which had another X11
graphics-related issue. Then Abiword had problems with OpenOffice and
everything started to go down hill fast.

Evidently, the X windows environment is not very stable.

[Bug 1670537] Re: Hardware Lister Start Error

2017-03-07 Thread KitchM
Thanks for your help, Brian.

To whom it may concern, I tried the link in the automatic message and it
does not work. (I wish people would check these before they send them
out.)

The message also states "add the package name in the text box next to
the word Package" but I can't find such a thing either. What is going
on here? I, for one, would like to see Canonical management get these
things working correctly. Users are continually left in the dark.

[Bug 1639864] [NEW] indicator-messages-service respawns and can't be stopped

Public bug reported:

Finding left behind item in indicator plugin. Had opened Pidgin and
found envelope icon in systray. Quit Pidgin but envelope still
displayed. Selecting it shows it is for Pidgin.

Went to task manager. Pidgin was not there. Found item indicator-

Attempted to kill, but still shows up. Cannot remove it or icon in

Seems similar to bug 1322275.

[Bug 1609802] [NEW] Upgrader Issues

2016-08-04 Thread KitchM
Public bug reported:

A notification pops up on the desktop on a fresh start. It suggests upgrade
from 14.04 to 16.04. However, there are various bugs.
1. The program is unidentified and so one does not know how to restart it if
cancelled. This is especially important since it gives no time frame for the
future reminder when selected.
2. It fails to list the size of the download, something that is absolutely
necessary for data-limited Internet connections.
3. It fails to confirm the architecture and offer a change.
4. It fails to list the LTS period.
5. When begun, it does a calculation and then reports the changes that will be
applied. However, when the user attempts to expand the details of the changes,
the window disappears below the bottom of the screen with no scroll bar. It is
therefore impossible to know all the changes that will be made.
6. It fails to explain the reasons for the various changes except for rather
nebulous categories.
7. It fails to allow user selected changes.
8. Its calculation on time to complete is way off.

I cannot use it as it is.

I am using

[Bug 27867]

2014-05-12 Thread KitchM
If the problem is from outside FF, then I do not believe it is an issue
of pleasing everyone. We should never try to appease those who use non-
standard ways of doing things. If any people do not conform to W3C
standards, they are actually part of the problem.

We can try to educate, but the software must conform. The more that all
browsers conform, the less we will have weirdo behavior from those like
IE.

With that said, the best way is always to re-write code to do what was
requested in the first post. However, if the text is actually an image,
then an error message that simply states that fact will go a long way to
user understanding of the problem others create. No text to adjust will
give no adjustment. That's just the way it is. Besides, that is
reasonable.

Bottom line, FF should give feedback by way of explanation.

[Bug 27867]

2013-11-15 Thread KitchM
Actually, the correct way to handle this problem is to select a team of
programmers and a director to lead them. Then have them work on a
parallel product to replace the existing program with a better, more
streamlined version with properly modular, segmented and documented code
that would be conducive to the addon process. Then when it is released,
it would supercede the existing without scaring away any users or addon
programmers.

It may not be as big a project as people might perceive. It just needs
to reuse the good existing code, while bringing it up to twenty-first
century standards.

[Bug 27867]

2013-09-20 Thread KitchM
Sorry, Mark, for the problems you find with the program. Please know
that I share your dispair at the way things are.

As I've explained elsewhere before, there is little interest in the
Mozilla community to polish the programs they create to make them as the
users might wish them to be. The programmers are doing this for free,
and they are doing it as they wish, which is their right. That's just
the rub of it.

Sadly, too many people have come to depend upon the software on a daily
basis. But that is the problem of the free software arrangement. Of
course, even if one paid for it, the program creators might still not
have the same vision, or care to serve the needs of the users. That's
just life.

No need to complain, I guess. Just hang in there, Pal. I understand,
and we are not alone.

[Bug 27867]

2012-11-17 Thread KitchM
I think that, as in many things, it is good to clarify the underlying
facts.

The OS has little to do with this. However, the DE (Desktop
Environment) can play havoc with the programs that run under it. Also,
the programmers of the individual apps do have the ability to maintain
their own little environment separate from the DE. I would think that
it is best to let the user choose if she wants a given app to be
controlled by the DE, or to remain controlled within its own space.

In this case, we see a problem of the mixture of app control overlapping
with DE control. That is the worst of all worlds IMHO. I would guess
that the GUI portion of the program is not coded correctly.
